*** TOAD COMICS LIST v3.1 - August 2009 - written by Niels Walta - Started as a helpful reminder for a dear friend of mine this project has grown to an extensive list, as close as possible to complete, containing all the comics in which Marvel Comic's mutant Toad is featured. This includes derivatives, clones and the ones found in alternate universes. Though large portions are reformatted and rewritten to fit the style of this document several parts still remain in the same format as the original authors have intended. Individual authors have been credited where possible. If you think you recognize some of your work which goes uncredited please contact me at shagrabbit@gmail.com so I can include your name. Moreels, Mike Raicht, John Q.T. Nguyen, Jim Learning, Mesran, atxbomber and Nemesis. This list is by all means incomplete, in particular concerning the latest issues. Further information and corrections are always welcomed at shagrabbit@gmail.com. Especially the items marked with (?) are currently under investigation and need to be confirmed. Furthermore items listed under "MISCELLANEOUS APPEARANCES" need to be reviewed, whether they're worthy of their own individual entries. Every listed untagged item needs to be reviewed to determine whether it needs flashback- or cameo-tags. Finally it goes without saying that this document, most notably the descriptions, contain SPOILERS. Keep this in mind if you come to descriptions of currently ongoing storylines and wish not to be spoiled. *** INDEX MARVEL CANON (EARTH-616) (Toad) 1602 (EARTH-311) (Toad) AGE OF APOCALYPSE (EARTH-295) (Toad) AMALGAM (EARTH-692) (Bismuth) AMALGAM (EARTH-692) (Virmin Vundavort) EARTH-956 (Toad) EARTH-FOREVER YESTERDAY (EARTH-9105) (Toad) EARTH X (EARTH-9997) (Toad/King Mortimer) EURTH (EARTH-616 DIMENSION) (Hop-Friend) EXILES (Toad) HOUSE OF M (EARTH-58163) (Toad) MARVEL CANON (EARTH-616) (Toad-in-waiting) MARVEL MANGAVERSE (EARTH-2301) (Master Toad/Toad-sensei) MARVEL ZOMBIES (EARTH-2149) (???) Moreels - Real Name: Mortimer Toynbee Former Aliases: Terrible Toad-King First Appearance: X-Men (1st series) #4 Place of Birth: York, England, United Kingdom Group Affiliation: Brotherhood III, Formerly Brotherhood of Mutants III, Brotherhood of Mutants II, Brotherhood of Mutants I, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants III (leader), Misfits (leader), Brotherhood of Evil Mutants I Known Allies: Magneto I, The Surgeon, formerly Frog-Man, Spider-Kid, Spider-Man I Major Enemies: X-Men, Stranger, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Eel III, Doctor Doom, formerly Magneto I Height: 5'9" Weight: 169 lbs Eyes: (originally) Brown, (currently) Yellow Hair: (originally) Brown, (temporarily) Green Other distinguishing features: yellow-green skin, elongated prehensile tongue, large toad-like eyes Mortimer Toynbee was born a mutant. Abandoned by his parents so early in his childhood that he cannot remember them, he was placed in an oprhanage. There, he was continually tormented by the other children, who regarded him as a freak due to his ugliness, his unusual physique, and his leaping ability. Toynbee was so traumatized by the continual abuse he received, as well as his loneliness, that it affected his learning abilities. The teachers and administrators at the orphanage therefore regarded Toynbee as mentally retarded, even though, in actuality, he was of normal intelligence. So desperate for affection did Toynbee become that he developed a pathetically subservient personality, and would unquestioningly obey anyone whom he thought sincerely cared about him. At some point after maturing into adulthood, Toynbee was discovered by the self-styled master of magnetism, Magneto, and recruited into the team of superhuman operatives known as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Magneto gave Toynbee the alias of the Toad, due to Toynbee's mutant powers, appearance, and personality. Magneto did not believe that the Toad's powers would be of any great service to him, but he thought it useful to have an expendable pawn who would follow his orders unquestioningly. The Toad was indeed pathetically devoted to Magneto, whom he subconsciously regarded as a surrogate father. He blinded himself to Magneto's continual verbal and physical abuse because Magneto was out to conquer the human race that had rejected Toynbee. The Toad believed that he would be given a place of honor in the new society that Magneto would create. As a member of the Brotherhood, the Toad met the beautiful mutant known as the Scarlet Witch and became infatuated with her, though she did not reciprocate the feelings. The Toad and his "master" were later captured by the alien being known as the Stranger and imprisoned on a distant planet. When Magneto first escaped, he callously left Toynbee behind, and the Toad's attitude towards his master began to change. After being recaptured, Magneto escaped a second time and took the Toad with him, but his continued bullying caused the Toad's resentment to increase until it flared into a murderous hatred. The Toad subsequently abandoned Magneto to die in an explosion that followed an encounter with the team of super-powered adventurers known as the Avengers and the mutant super-heroes known as the X-Men. It was later discovered that Magneto had survived the blast. The Toad became a recluse, but was soon captured along with the Scarlet Witch and her brother, the mutant speedster known as Quicksilver, first by the giant mutant-hunting robots known as Sentinels and later by the extra-dimensional warrior named Arkon. When the Avengers rescued Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, the Toad asked to remain on Arkon's world, where he employed his technological resources to build a ship that would carry him across space and the dimensional barrier. Using this ship, the Toad returned to the Stranger's world. There, he studied and stole the Stranger's technology and equipment in an effort to become more powerful, thus mistakenly believing he would become more appealing to the Scarlet Witch. However, just as he prepared to return to Earth, he learned that the Scarlet Witch had married her Avengers teammate, the synthetic humanoid known as the Vision. Enraged, the Toad planned to strike out at her, and attacked the Avengers in order to learn of her whereabouts. He was summarily defeated, and served a short prison term. Following his release from prison, he commissioned the assassin known as Arcade to construct a series of deadly traps in a seemingly-deserted castle in upstate New York. Renaming himself the Terrible Toad-King, he planned to entrap everyone who he felt had abused him, placing them in the castle where they would presumably be killed by the traps within during their attempts to escape. His first victim was the winged member of the X-Men known as the Angel. In capturing the Angel, the Toad accidentally kidnapped the member of the world-famous Fantastic Four known as the Thing as well. Just as the two heroes were about to escape, Arcade stepped in and demanded immediate payment for his services. Unable to pay and fearful for his own life, the Toad fell into a panic. The Angel took pity on him and formulated an agreement with the Toad to convert the castle into an amusement park, paying his debt to Arcade in the process. The endeavor was a success until it was discovered that the castle's original owner was the dictator of the European country of Latveria, Victor Von Doom. Doom sent a robot duplicate of himself and a security force to remove the Toad and restore the castle to its original state. Toynbee again fell into despondency and attempted to commit suicide, but was saved by the arcahnid super-hero Spider-Man. In an effort to buoy Toynbee's spirit, Spider-Man offered his friendship. As eager for this acceptance as he had been for Magneto's, the Toad became determined to becoime Spider-Man's partner in fighting crime, despite Spider-Man's gentle protests. The Toad resorted to a ruse in an effort to change his mind, and hired a group of criminals to attack Spider-Man, during which the Toad would then help foil. In the process, he attracted the attention of two young neophyte heroes known as Frog-Man and Spider-Kid, who also wished to team-up with Spider-Man. During the ensuing fight, the three found themselves interested in a partnership of their own and formed the team known as the Misfits. Though seeking the help of a psychiatrist during this period, Toynbee was still obsessed with the Scarlet Witch. In direct contradiction to his law-enforcing partnership with the Misfits, the Toad used the technology he had stolen from the Stranger to attempt to kidnap the Scarlet Witch. Once again calling himself the Terrible Toad-King, Toynbee's first such try was during a Thanksgiving celebration involving robot counterparts of the original members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The Toad's plan was foiled by the Vision, Quicksilver, and the recently-reformed Magneto. Toynbee and his automatons were removed to the research facility known as Project: Pegasus for study, but one of the robots reactivated on a timed program and freed the Toad. The Vision pursued the Toad to his ship and narrowly defeated him, sending the ship out of control into space. The Toad regained control in time to successfully return to Earth, where he attempted to capture the Scarlet Witch again. He became violently agitated when this attempt brought him into conflict with Spider-Man, whose approval he still valued. The Toad defeated Spider-Man and the Vision using a powerful exo-skeleton and forced his way into the New Jersey home of the Scarlet Witch. The Scarlet Witch was eight months pregnant, and when the Toad confronted her, he found her condition repulsive. She defeated him, but he escaped. Later, the Toad returned to lead his own incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, having gained much self-confidence in himself and his abilities. This Brotherhood clashed with the government-sponsored team of costumed adventurers known as X-Factor, but was defeated. Soon after, the Toad petitioned to join the Hellfire Club, an elite social organization whose Inner Circle was comprised of powerful and wealthy mutants. His petition was rejected, but the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost, took pity on Toynbee and allowed him to set-up residence in one of her many houses in Canada. Unfortunately, once again, the Toad fell in with a bad crowd. Using the help of the mutant known only as the Surgeon, he created an army of carnivorous toads and attempted to subjugate Frost and her young mutant charges, Generation X. Toynbee abandoned the effort when Frost made him see that he was doing to herself and Generation X what Magneto had done to him for years. Following another short stint with the Brotherhood, during which he helped safeguard the X-Men's telepathic founder, Professor Charles Xavier, from the threat of the nanite-infested computer known as Cerebro, the Toad was called upon to play the part of hero. He joined a disparate group of mutants who were called upon to help save the human race from a threat that might not manifest itself for millions of years. Forced to revisit his past, the Toad discovered that he and thousands of other mutant infants had been held for study in a secret, non-governmental facility known as the Black Womb. He learned that individuals had begun tracking the evolution of mutation in humans long before Magneto rose up to terrorize the world. In the ensuing battle to save humanity, the Toad was mortally wounded, but was healed by the systems aboard an alien spaceraft resulting in a significantly less repulsive appearance and enhanced abilities. The "new and improved" Toad went on to join the shape-shifting mutant terrorist known as Mystique in the latest incarnation of the Brotherhood, and participated in a failed assassination attempt on anti-mutant presidential candidate Senator Robert Kelly. Seeking to prove to the world that he was no longer the snivelling, repulsive creature he had once been, the Toad entered the fighting tournament known as the Blood Sport on the island of Madripoor. In the first round of the tournament, the Toad easily killed the electricity-wielding super-villain known as the Eel. However, in the second round, the Toad faced off with the feral X-Man known as Wolverine. Despite taking the X-Man by surprise with his new abilities, Toad lost the match. Later, the Toad was one of those mutants who had resurfaced on the island nation of Genosha following its destruction by Mega-Sentinels commanded by the genetic twin of Xavier, Cassandra Nova. There, the Toad and other mutants used a deactivated Mega-Sentinel to build a monument dedicated to the memory of Magneto, believed killed in the attack on Genosha. The Toad is a mutant whose powers and abilities mimic those of his namesake, the common toad. His upper arms and legs are almost entirely muscular, granting him a degree of superhuman strength that allow him to lift approximately one ton with his arms, and three tons with his legs. The Toad can use this strength to propel him in leaps, and has been has been observed to reach an altitude of 24 feet and cover a distance on the ground of 36 feet in a single leap. No definitive limit to his leaping ability is currently known. Although the Toad usually stands in a crouching position, he can stand erect if he wishes. His unusually flexible spine enables him to crouch continually without suffering any ill side effects, and also affords him incredible agility, allowing him to execute mid-air spins, twists, and gymnastics with natural ease. Toad was the faithful servant of the "Magneto" who terrorized New York City. Fantomex shot Toad's knees during the rescue of Professor X. Toad returned to Genosha in where he tried to use his tongue against Wolverine for slicing off part of the Magneto Memorial. Wolverine cut most of Toad's tongue off. Toad was part of Unus' crew on Genosha during the time Xavier was living on Genosha. He returned to New York, tongue & knees healed, after M-Day. There he saved a mutant called Lorelei [III] from members of Purity. He accompanied Lorelei to Xavier's, where mutants who still had powers have fled for protection. Toad was one of the unfortunate mutants who accepted having an electronic tag inserted in order to be allowed to go out on a supervised group trip to Salem Center. Dr. Cooper told the mutants that the tags were "...a harmless tracking device, inserted under the skin with a simple and painless surgical process." That wasn't true. Toad was among the mutants that broke out of the 198 camp and fled from the Xavier Institute during a riot, orchestrated by Caliban, Domino and Shatterstar. The 198 retreated to what they thought to be an abandoned nuclear bunker in the Nevada desert. The X-Men and O*N*E soon followed only to find themselves at odds with each other. As it turned out the mutant Johnny Dee had been instructed by general Lazer to take control of people's minds in order to cause chaos and division. The 198 soon found out as a mind controlled Outlaw pointed her gun at Domino. Domino's powers however caused a misfire and Toad was quick to overtake the unaware gunslinger. As Johnny Dee and Lazer were apprehended it was revealed the bunker was actually a blast containment chamber for experimental weapons. Toad found himself trapped inside with the rest of the 198 as the auto-destruct sequence was initiated. Through a combined effort of the X-Men, Bishop, Iron Man and Ms. Marvel everyone managed to escape in time as the bunker exploded. After his further mutation, the Toad also possesses an elongated tongue. At least five feet in length, the tongue remains coiled up inside his mouth until such time as he utilizes it. Extremely elastic, the Toad's tongue can reach up to apporoximately 25 feet in length at full stretch. The Toad can use his tongue as a whip to give stinging lashes, or to coil around his opponents and constrict them. He can also use his tongue to coat his victim in venomous pheromones that seep through the skin directly into the bloodstream. These pheromones cause anyone exposed to them to have their will become subservient to the Toad's. However, some beings with resistances to poisons, such as Mystique, are immune to the effects of these pheromones. It is presumed the victim's skin needs to be porous for the pheromones to do their work. The Toad can also release these pheromones from his fingertips. The Toad can also secrete a sticky mucous from the pores of his skin that can render the muscles in others numb and unresponsive. These sticky secretions also allow the Toad to cling to and climb walls. Being naturally adhesive, his secretions give him added purchase whilst climbing, allowing him to scale sheer drops with ease. The Toad also uses his elongated tongue on occasion to aid him in climbing difficult terrain. He can also spit this mucous in a solid form which hardens almost immediately on contact to create a hard, amber-like coating. If spat at a victim's face, the mucous can seal over their nostrils and mouth, preventing their ability to breathe and thus asphyxiating them. The Toad can also inhale oxygen at a rapid rate, puffing himself up akin to a bullfrog, and then expel the compressed air as a gust of wind. The maximum amount of air he can inhale at one time, as well as the maximum rate that he can expel this air at, have yet to be determined. The Toad formerly had no knowledge of hand-to-hand combat, but with the recent acquisition of his new powers he has trained in the use of these abilities and is now an average melee fighter. His powers enable him to execute a leaping kick with superhuman force at an opponent. He also possesses a degree of superhuman strength, allowing him to lift approximately 1 ton with his arms, and three tons with his legs. The Toad's elongated tongue is also able to lift heavy weights, though the exact limits are unknown. The Toad has a surprisingly great knowledge of advanced technology, thanks to his studies of devices in the possession of Magneto, the Stranger, and Arcade. However, he is not himself talented at designing technological devices. The Toad also has sensitive eyesight, and often wears light-filtering goggles that allow him to operate in strong daylight that would otherwise blind him. In this future, the Purple Man controls the world, and has imprisoned, killed or banished all of the superheroes. By banishing Captain America to the year 1602, Earth-311 was accidentally created. In 1602 A.D. the Toad, agent of the Vatican, became allied with Enrique, The Grand Inquisitor, after he foiled an assassination attempt. As Enrique's plot was to recruit the 'witchbreed' who could conceal their abilities in the unfriendly world, it is wondered why Toad was included, as he is shown with a long tongue constantly coming out of his mouth. He also has the ability to climb around on walls. When his deception is discovered by the Papacy, he betrays Enrique and his allies in exchange for his life. However, when Enrique's group breaks free, they capture Toad. Enrique promises to kill him, but his death is at least delayed, as he is seen alive on the ship later, though he doesn't appear in the climax. It's possible Enrique killed him between these two periods, off-screen. The X-Men resided at Master Toad's hideout after a brief skirmish with the local police, trying to apprehend the Hellfire Club member Emma Frost. He also possesses the ability to stick to walls and spit a sticky slime which causes temporary paralysis. He can elongate his tongue and use it as a whip. Toad was recruited into Magneto's anti-human terrorist organization, the Brotherhood of Mutant Supremacy, soon after he exiled Xavier from the Savage Land. He was among the Brotherhood who kidnapped and held the president's daughter in an abandoned Croatian hotel room. Soon after he had his first confrontation with the X-Men who quickly defeated the Brotherhood. After the X-Man Cyclops defected to Magneto's side, Toad and he became friends. Toad was next seen months later helping free the X-Men from the Weapon X program. Now Toad has resurfaced along with the Brotherhood as they crashed a school dance over at Emma Frost's Academy of Tomorrow. They were soon proven though to be an illusion created by Elliot Boggs, the new X-Men known as Magician, in an attempt to prove his usefulness to the team. It was revealed in issue 81 that, after the apparent death of professor Xavier, the disbanding of the X-Men and the establishing of the Xavier School for Gifted Children, Toad has been assigned a teaching position at the academy, as head of the athletics class. Most recently he was sent out on a recruiting mission to the Morlocks' underground hideout. He offered a safe haven at the school for all those who were willing to come. But Nightcrawler's presence and Sunder's paranoia escalated the situation. Both Nightcrawler and Toad were taken prisoner by the Morlocks. Todd has gone through life as the underdog, an outcast, never quite fitting in wherever he went, except maybe with the Brotherhood.
