Different conditions: different experiences

In ZIGZAGZINE #3 we have seen that the general process consists of twelve phases. Within the structure which we call human we can distinguish several processes or functions, namely: the process of beginning, the process of responsibility, the learning process, the process of bonding, of cooperation, of handling routine, and many others. Within a certain person all processes develop according to patterns which stay the same: we begin in a certain manner, but also the way in which we handle authority, the way we learn, the way we make bonds, cooperate, handle routine, all follow recognizable patterns. Although the patterns which one person uses are recognizable in other people, every person has his individual variations on these common patterns.

The process of beginning has a goal: we want to reach the end with a certain experience. We translate our goal, that is specified in the last phase of the process, into conditions. In addition to the goal of beginning we have other goals and conditions that stem from other processes. The goal of beginning therefore is a partial goal or sub-goal. All the sub-goals of a person together make up his or her inner or singular goal.
From these goals and their subsequent conditions a person looks at his or her environment, from these goals and conditions a person creates his or her individual context and from this context he or she builds his or her experience and updates his or her conditions.

Last time, in ZIGZAGZINE #2, we looked at the space making pattern of beginning. We shall continue the series of patterns with that of people who start with claiming space and make a single choice.

The twelve patterns (each with individual variations) originate from a shift of the 'colouring' which is added to the process. The starting-phase of the process begins, for example,
1  somewhere halfway within the 1st 'colour'
2  at the end of the 2nd 'colour'
4  halfway within the 4th 'colour'
8  at the start of the 8th 'colour'

Starting with pattern #8: 'First I'll claim inner space to make a choice'

This starting point can be described as: 'In order to start I must pinpoint the heart of the matter, I must catch the essence, I have to make a choice; to this end I must reject all alternatives and all unimportant and unnecessary things and risk a confrontation with the values of other people. My starting point is therefore not only vulnerable, but also complicated by the fact that I have collected a number of alternatives and can only use one single goal to aim at in the second phase. I'll have to make a decision'.

Let's imagine asking Sigmund Freud what he thinks is most important for him when he starts something, for instance when an unknown person enters his room. He would probably have said something like: 'I cannot let details and irrelevant things distract me because I need to get hold of the heart of the matter, the essence from the available information. Thus I can identify my goal and get started'.

Probably Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (actor and playwright who used the pseudonym Molière) would describe his way of beginning in a similar manner like: 'First I look for the shortest way to the essence of the subject, I want to go emphatically straight to the heart of the matter. From the start it is all or nothing'.

Simone de Beauvoir thinks the best example is describing her way of doing the shopping: 'I know what things I am looking for and determine beforehand the most practical order or the shortest way to get them'. Speaking about a more general property of hers she says: 'I am a person of extremes. Sometimes friends say my manner of beginning is too direct or even rude, and I must certainly admit that my presence can be rather bold'.

As explained in the introduction to this zine, people with a certain pattern of beginning not only have the first phase in common but all the subsequent phases of the pattern. Consequently we can say: 'We work (phase 6) with our heads, in an impulsive way and better when working alone; we are essentially (phase 5) intuitive and scientifically minded people; we have at our disposal an extensive frame of reference (phase 2); we handle information (phase 3) in a structuring manner; we make space for ourselves in our frame of thinking (phase 9); our memory (phase 12) offers us alternatives'.

  • towards work or, if things don't work out, towards sickness (phase 6). He does so and emphatically wants to do so with a patient attitude which enables him to quietly get to the essence. He tends to be rash in practical matters, but in important matters he builds up step by step, because they must be completed.
  • Next he directs his work (phase 6) towards making it acceptable (phase 11). In an analyzing and harmonizing manner he wants to work on the self of the other person, on creating equality.
  • Then he directs this 'making acceptable' (phase 11) towards collaboration (phase 7), in an attitude of patience and tenacity stimulate the other person to take initiatives, in such a way that the other person can later go his own way.
  • And finally the cooperation (phase 7) is, again, directed at that which either works or does not work (phase 6), in a practical manner but always with patience, by tackling the social interaction.
  • That work he directs again towards 'acceptability', hereby a constant repetition of these three phases (6, 11 and 7) develops.

He also brings in experience and memory, dreams and the subconscious (phase 12) to help solve his work (phase 6) on malfunctioning or sickness causing matters.

  • towards attentive cooperation, seeking supplement (phase 7), his initiatives of action (phase 1) are directed towards motivating people and keeping them going (phase 7): 'I look for a means to establish absorbing interaction'.
  • This (phase 7) brings him then to a creative and emotional type of endeavor (phase 4) in which he seeks social interaction with people
  • which (phase 4) he subsequently directs to a dramatic expression and dissemination of ideas (phase 9);
  • which (phase 9), again, leads to a creative and emotional type of endeavor (phase 4).

These two phases would then alternate constantly, but other fields still provide new materials.

Feeling responsible and with social status in mind (phase 10) his father determined for him which way he should go (phase 3). However, Jean-Baptiste would resist leadership and authority, in spite of the fact that he actually clearly depended on the guidance of some other person. It is also quite probable that he would have denied this! The material from this phase (phase 3) would be directed towards dramatic expression and dissemination of ideas (phase 9).

  • towards attentive collaboration (phase 7), towards seeking a lasting complementary relation (just like Molière who, by the way, lived approximately 250 years earlier), taking the initiative (phase 1) to motivate other people and keeping them going (phase 7);
  • from there she directs the other person's activity (phase 7) to structured and renovating communication (phase 3), to differentiation that exceeds its boundaries;
  • then she turns towards caring for (phase 4) the extreme and elusive authority;
  • then to her belief in the necessity to slowly and all by herself determine her own values (phase 2);
  • next she directs herself to the nourishing value of the thoughts of the other person for her own learning and understanding (phase 9);
  • then to her intuitive singular being (phase 5) with such strong feelings;
  • thereupon to either claiming space for herself (phase 8), or leaving space to the intellectual and emotional conditions of the other person (phase 8);
  • to return again, in a doubtful manner, to her belief that she should make time to determine her conditions as an individual all by herself (phase 2). Hereby a constant repetition of the last four phases (9, 5, 8 and 2) develops.

Simone de Beauvoir's personality appears to be very varied, energetic, emotional and at the same time down-to-earth. She was well prepared to sacrifice a great amount of patience and resilience in relationships. However, after too much denial of her supplementary role to her partner's shortages (she was married to Jean-Paul Sartre who in some respect could hardly do without her), I presume that she, a late-developing personality, in the end had to choose between continuing to invest in relations or get in touch with her own self.

Phase:
  1. At the start I concentrate on the heart of the matter. First of all I brush aside everything that is irrelevant. If I cannot grasp the heart of the matter then I do not begin. I relish beginning;
    On condition that I can also believe in it, that taking the initiative will be worth my while. I can only begin if there are also possibilities for growth.
  2. I handle my assets in an idealistic way, I manage my properties and my frame of reference purposefully. My frame of reference is broad. I add to my assets only that which answers my goal, and fits in the general picture;
    On condition that it is also realistic and safe.
  3. I am independent in the accumulation of knowledge. Independently I stipulate my own conditions. The acquaintances I want are independent, reliable and faithful to themselves. They also quietly follow their own path. I keep at a distance from my acquaintances. My information is reliable;
    But in the end I need information which is out of the ordinary, and exceptional acquaintances.
  4. The exceptional gives me protection. I cannot feel safe or secure without equality, or if I am not accepted with my uniqueness. I exceed boundaries in my undertakings. My enterprise is exceptional. Whatever I undertake is original;
    And it will eventually lead to a solution, it will be transient. The experience of unity will finally give me security.
  5. My inner self needs no ties or bonds. In essence I am inscrutable, and liberal. I have a rich fantasy, I am obscure and elusive. When I play then I do so with great fantasy. Having searched from the beginning for the heart of the matter, for the essence of things;
    I am finally essentially a practical person, this is what I am so this is how I begin.
  6. I work in a practical manner, I work hard. I prefer work in which I can develop my own initiatives. I like to work alone, I do not want to be hampered in my work by too many limitations;
    My final condition is that I can determine by myself whether I'll complete my work. In that case I'll certainly finish it.
  7. If I want to work together with another person I think that I should be a bit patient, just wait and see what comes of it. From the beginning I search for the essentials, and I search to get the practical hang of things; if the other person only quietly waits, accepts and finishes when I have found where it finally has to go, I shall be satisfied;
    Secondly the other person must have perspective, have knowledge, otherwise I would not enter into the partnership. It is not about being in control but about setting the direction, making a start and indicating the process. To this end the other person must necessarily have knowledge at his / her disposal.
  8. I relish good communication. I make my choice in an objective manner, in a detached way. I concentrate on knowledge, I turn over and digest information. My digestion is superficial. My associate's frame of reference is full of knowledge;
    Finally I make my selection when I am also emotionally involved.
  9. I love tangible goals and ideals. They need not be realistic, they must be absolutely understandable. I form objectives emotionally, I feel where it should go, I can't even name it, I have a feeling for ideals. It's not difficult for me to transfer my own ideals. People can read it from my face, see it in my eyes and in my enthusiasm. I appreciate traveling comfortably because that helps me to stay anchored;
    Ultimately I want to reach my own ideal.
  10. I like to shape my goals and ideals in an essentially individual way. I am self-assured on condition that I have an overview of the whole situation. In order to be involved in society I need to survey the whole matter, otherwise I can not give guidance. I acquire self-assurance by being independent. In my occupation I need to work independently;
    As a second condition my self-assurance must be clear.
  11. My friends are clear, critical, supportive. I am supportive, critical and clear in respect to my friends. I have a small group of friends. At the start I searched for the heart of the matter and everything needed to be practical; now I accept myself by analyzing my own possibilities;
    Via clarity I will eventually reach harmony.
  12. I finish my affairs in a harmonious manner. I let go in an attitude of resignation. I seek diplomatic solutions. Before I can give up I always look for another road, for an alternative;
    But finally I'll let go in a concise and practical manner. This solution has to be possible from the start.
