Pattern of beginning Taurus: 'First I take my time and recall my plan'

The process, no matter which function uses it, is an open process. An open process repeats itself, is cyclic, and because of that can learn from its experience. The cyclic process can remember its goal but not only that, it can also remember its intentions and plans. Within the structure of the open process a function has always one phase (the tenth) at its disposal where it can order its time, can set out a plan that leads to its goal.
The structure may well always be the same, the manner in which it is applied is, as we well know, certainly not always alike. Functions (and therefore also people) follow in the application of the process one of the patterns which are being traced in this series. The execution of a pattern is in all parts always individually determined too. From all functions that a human being has at its disposal the presence function has been taken as example, the function of the activation of nerves, senses and muscles, the beginning of an assigned task. The presence function has the task of maintaining contact with the outside world and is the manner in which an individual presents itself.

Last time we discussed how people can begin and make their plan in time and work initiatively at the perfect design of ideals, of dreams, of wishes and ultimately of their personal goal; now we continue with the pattern of taking one's time to patiently and attentively consider whether the initiative complies with the plan - and if so whether it can be brought to a good end. These are the people who start with halting and referring to their plan and asking themselves why they wanted to begin in the first place. Once they have considered whether this initiative matches it ánd whether it will yield more knowledge, then and only then do they really get moving and go on till the very end. In this way this function sticks to its plan and lets time do its job.

We can describe this pattern of beginning as:
'At the start I am always hesitant, I wait and see. I do already know what the objective is, but shall I begin with this? Do I foresee that the form will stand out durably from the background, am I convinced also that there is time? If I am satisfied, once I get into my stride, I'll take my time, I can't be stopped and will continue untill my initiative is finished, until there is a valuable product.
The second condition is that my attention makes a difference, that I can collect knowledge, or I won't begin.

As usual some examples have been described of people who use(d) this pattern as pattern of beginning.
Let's imagine that we ask, as our first example, the philosopher Immanuel Kant how he begins a new day. He might well say: 'Of course there are the things that return every day. I do them quietly and planned, strictly on schedule. I have breakfast at five o'clock sharp. Then I go through today's matters, what I worked on yesterday and where I had stopped, and start classes in my auditorium at six. Because my work on the 'Kritiek' demands that I keep intensely concentrated on my task without interruption, I permit myself only social contacts of a relaxing nature. So I always receive friends for lunch but we certainly do not speak about philosophical subjects'.

The artist Charley Toorop could answer the question of how she would go about doing her shopping and say: 'I only go shopping when I have several things I need to buy, otherwise I would waste too much time on it. That is to say that I keep a sort of list in my head of the things I have to buy and that I'll work through that list. Are there any more questions? Thank you.'

If we would ask the composer Ludwig van Beethoven how he begins his day, he might say: 'At bedtime I look forward to the morning. When I wake up I often have quite new ideas which I record in my notebook immediately. I am used to going over yesterday's work and ideas again and then elaborate on these ideas sensing for interesting variations. During my relaxed afternoon walk I can think and find rest, inspiration and structure in nature'.

Two poles for developing a system of values

Beginning with pausing and taking time to ask oneself what were the goal and the plan again? The introvert Taurus-pattern, as we can see, concerns itself first with values. The opposite pole, the also introvert Scorpio-Other at the 7th phase, must help develop the first pole. There the Taurus-side gets the revealing help and resistance which it needs. The cooperative effort can be one of doubt: is this my initiative or yours, what do we want from one another, do I have to conform in order to get help, in order to get down to the heart of the matter?

In order to be able to maintain his own conditions, for him so important, when faced with the values of other people, of the environment, the cautious Taurus needs the Gemini-knowledge of the 2nd phase of personal values, it needs to know its own purpose. In order to respect one's own values, to compare other people's values with their own standards, to hold one's own in order to attain one's goal, the Taurus must learn to appreciate its antipole, in the 8th phase get to know the Sagittarius-values of the Other, examine the essence, and learn to deal with large-scale rejection and deep concentration. In fact, double checks are performed of and from values. With the help of wide knowledge and ample material for comparison, profound understanding and wide experience, the cooperation can contribute to this function developing its values and attaining its personal goal.

As we already know, the individual will shift the perspective to another terrain in another phase of the process in his own way, in accordance with the location of the function concerned. The movement which starts from the introvert sign of Taurus moves to the function Venus which is either secondary and therefore introvert, or primary and therefore extravertly directed. Venus secondary represents the conditions of the reference process, of remembering their own plans and maintain stubbornly what is started; Venus primary represents the conditions of the adaptation process of interaction, of conforming to the outer world.


the TAURUS pattern applied individually

Immanuel Kant, 1724-1804.

German, scholar from the Enlightenment, worked all his life at the universty of Königsbergen (now Kaliningrad) where he also taught geography, poetry, artillery and astronomy. His main philosophic work was 'The Critique of Pure Reason' (1770).
The given time of birth seems to me to have to be taken a bit earlier. I have assumed 4h56 L.T., then the movement given below is preserved but the Ascendant comes in conjunction with the Sun and in relation with the three functions connected with it. Then his social conduct, as we know it, can come out more easily.
Within his Taurus pattern of beginning Kant moved his perspective, rather exceptionally, quite naturally to the second phase. Then he shifted the perspective to the 12th phase, then to the 3rd phase and back again to the 12th phase.

Was known as Charley, real name was Annie Caroline Pontifex. Dutch artist, her style is called social realistic.
Charley moved not automatically towards the second phase of the Taurus pattern of beginning, but shifted the perspective towards the 9th phase, then to the 4th and the 11th phase and then back again towards the first, to go over the whole movement again.

Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827.

German-Austrian composer. Of his many famous works the last part, called Alle Menschen werden Brüder, of the 9th symphony is presently popular as a European anthem.
The given birth-time seemed to me to have to be taken a bit later. I assumed 13:38h L.T., then the movement as described below remains intact but the aspect between Jupiter and the Ascendant no longer applies. In this case Jupiter makes not a single aspect, which leads to his distinctive behaviour (he no longer radiates enthusiasm, but it does not prevent him from strongly bringing out his belief in human values via his music).
Beethoven did not move automatically towards the second phase within the Taurus pattern of beginning but, like most people, changed in his own way the perspective within that pattern. As soon as he started something new he went first towards the 9th phase and from there towards the 4th and the 8th, where this movement would stop.
