Starting with pattern #2, 'First I take my time and recall my plan'.

  ^

Pattern of beginning Taurus: 'First I take my time and recall my plan'

The process, no matter which function uses it, is an open process. An open process repeats itself, is cyclic, and because of that can learn from its experience. The cyclic process can remember its goal but not only that, it can also remember its intentions and plans. Within the structure of the open process a function has always one phase (the tenth) at its disposal where it can order its time, can set out a plan that leads to its goal.
The structure may well always be the same, the manner in which it is applied is, as we well know, certainly not always alike. Functions (and therefore also people) follow in the application of the process one of the patterns which are being traced in this series. The execution of a pattern is in all parts always individually determined too. From all functions that a human being has at its disposal the presence function has been taken as example, the function of the activation of nerves, senses and muscles, the beginning of an assigned task. The presence function has the task of maintaining contact with the outside world and is the manner in which an individual presents itself.

Last time we discussed how people can begin and make their plan in time and work initiatively at the perfect design of ideals, of dreams, of wishes and ultimately of their personal goal; now we continue with the pattern of taking one's time to patiently and attentively consider whether the initiative complies with the plan - and if so whether it can be brought to a good end. These are the people who start with halting and referring to their plan and asking themselves why they wanted to begin in the first place. Once they have considered whether this initiative matches it ánd whether it will yield more knowledge, then and only then do they really get moving and go on till the very end. In this way this function sticks to its plan and lets time do its job.

We can describe this pattern of beginning as:
'At the start I am always hesitant, I wait and see. I do already know what the objective is, but shall I begin with this? Do I foresee that the form will stand out durably from the background, am I convinced also that there is time? If I am satisfied, once I get into my stride, I'll take my time, I can't be stopped and will continue untill my initiative is finished, until there is a valuable product.
The second condition is that my attention makes a difference, that I can collect knowledge, or I won't begin.
'

As usual some examples have been described of people who use(d) this pattern as pattern of beginning.
Let's imagine that we ask, as our first example, the philosopher Immanuel Kant how he begins a new day. He might well say: 'Of course there are the things that return every day. I do them quietly and planned, strictly on schedule. I have breakfast at five o'clock sharp. Then I go through today's matters, what I worked on yesterday and where I had stopped, and start classes in my auditorium at six. Because my work on the 'Kritiek' demands that I keep intensely concentrated on my task without interruption, I permit myself only social contacts of a relaxing nature. So I always receive friends for lunch but we certainly do not speak about philosophical subjects'.

The artist Charley Toorop could answer the question of how she would go about doing her shopping and say: 'I only go shopping when I have several things I need to buy, otherwise I would waste too much time on it. That is to say that I keep a sort of list in my head of the things I have to buy and that I'll work through that list. Are there any more questions? Thank you.'

If we would ask the composer Ludwig van Beethoven how he begins his day, he might say: 'At bedtime I look forward to the morning. When I wake up I often have quite new ideas which I record in my notebook immediately. I am used to going over yesterday's work and ideas again and then elaborate on these ideas sensing for interesting variations. During my relaxed afternoon walk I can think and find rest, inspiration and structure in nature'.

The outline at the bottom of this page contains more details of this pattern

Two poles for developing a system of values

Beginning with pausing and taking time to ask oneself what were the goal and the plan again? The introvert Taurus-pattern, as we can see, concerns itself first with values. The opposite pole, the also introvert Scorpio-Other at the 7th phase, must help develop the first pole. There the Taurus-side gets the revealing help and resistance which it needs. The cooperative effort can be one of doubt: is this my initiative or yours, what do we want from one another, do I have to conform in order to get help, in order to get down to the heart of the matter?

In order to be able to maintain his own conditions, for him so important, when faced with the values of other people, of the environment, the cautious Taurus needs the Gemini-knowledge of the 2nd phase of personal values, it needs to know its own purpose. In order to respect one's own values, to compare other people's values with their own standards, to hold one's own in order to attain one's goal, the Taurus must learn to appreciate its antipole, in the 8th phase get to know the Sagittarius-values of the Other, examine the essence, and learn to deal with large-scale rejection and deep concentration. In fact, double checks are performed of and from values. With the help of wide knowledge and ample material for comparison, profound understanding and wide experience, the cooperation can contribute to this function developing its values and attaining its personal goal.

As we already know, the individual will shift the perspective to another terrain in another phase of the process in his own way, in accordance with the location of the function concerned. The movement which starts from the introvert sign of Taurus moves to the function Venus which is either secondary and therefore introvert, or primary and therefore extravertly directed. Venus secondary represents the conditions of the reference process, of remembering their own plans and maintain stubbornly what is started; Venus primary represents the conditions of the adaptation process of interaction, of conforming to the outer world.

Immanuel Kant, 1724-1804.
Königsbergen, 22 april 1724, 05:00 L.T. [ source ]
German, scholar from the Enlightenment, worked all his life at the universty of Königsbergen (now Kaliningrad) where he also taught geography, poetry, artillery and astronomy. His main philosophic work was 'The Critique of Pure Reason' (1770).
The given time of birth seems to me to have to be taken a bit earlier. I have assumed 4h56 L.T., then the movement given below is preserved but the Ascendant comes in conjunction with the Sun and in relation with the three functions connected with it. Then his social conduct, as we know it, can come out more easily.
Within his Taurus pattern of beginning Kant moved his perspective, rather exceptionally, quite naturally to the second phase. Then he shifted the perspective to the 12th phase, then to the 3rd phase and back again to the 12th phase.

Brief description

Information from the birthchart

NB: words in italics are notions which Kant often used.
  1. Kant starts and sends his initiatives out with the intention of keeping an eye on his plan and making sure that he really wants to begin and that he can reach his goal;
    this is completed with a clearly manifest hospitable personality;

  2. then, if he gets started, he tries to explain from the esthetical or the sensual observation the values of the intellect and the reason;
  3. subsequently he approaches the remembered observations in a practical manner;

    with a pure, critical and focussed at the fundaments eye connecting the concepts present;
  4. then he opens intellectual means and fundamental tracks for the benefit of the thinking process (power of reason);
  5. and returns time and again to the remembered concepts in order to show how to connect them either via analysis or synthesis to judgements (conclusions);
  6. thus he continually approaches the analytical or the synthetic thinking, alternatingly in a persistent and practical manner.

The stimulating feeding line is one of socially desirable, large-scale renewal which requires another methodology, other considerations and another frame of thought in order to accommodate the new values.

The whole process gets emphasized rather like a dogma.

  1. The ASCENDANT is located in the sign (filter or colouring) of TAURUS;
    in conjunction with the Sun in Taurus in the 12th phase in Aries;
  2. from the 1st phase, via VENUS primary, towards the 2nd phase in GEMINI;
  3. from the 2nd phase, via MERCURY secundary, towards the 12th phase in ARIES;
    with Mercury in conjunction with the Moon;
  4. from the 12th phase, via MARS, towards the 3rd phase in CANCER;
  5. and, now via the Moon, back again towards the 12th phase;

  6. and so back and forth between the Moon and Mars, two functions which for him are interchangeable.

This movement is fed from JUPITER in the 10th phase in AQUARIUS, via URANUS in the 6th phase in LIBRA, towards Venus primary in the 2nd phase.
SATURN in the 9th phase in CAPRICORN is strongly related with the main movement.

Charley Toorop, 1891-1955.
Katwijk aan Zee, 24 march 1891, 7:13h GMT. [ source ]
Was known as Charley, real name was Annie Caroline Pontifex. Dutch artist, her style is called social realistic.
Charley moved not automatically towards the second phase of the Taurus pattern of beginning, but shifted the perspective towards the 9th phase, then to the 4th and the 11th phase and then back again towards the first, to go over the whole movement again.

Brief description

Information from the birthchart

  1. Charley begins and sends out her initiatives with the intention of keeping an eye on her goal and making sure that she can carry out her plan;
  2. she moves her perspective towards her original, strongly structured ideal of beauty;

  3. from this strategic point she moves vulnerably and wanting to achieve towards her emotional basis to summon up courage;
  4. from that base she can, full of self-confidence, express creatively her social involvement;
    in a fierce and direct language of form, conveying the beauty of life;
  5. this social confrontation brings her back towards a new creative initiative;
    that is mixed with her need to choose her own way in a concentrated and forceful manner;
  6. and thus go on repeating this process.

The supplemental function Jupiter emphasizes her interpretation of the actual society which she expresses in the realistic approach of social subject matter;
and the function Uranus points at the renewing character of her artistic work.

  1. The ASCENDANT is located in the sign (filter or colouring) of TAURUS;
  2. from the 1st phase, via VENUS secondary in AQUARIUS, towards phase 9 in CAPRICORN;
  3. from phase 9, via SATURN in VIRGO, towards phase 4 in LEO;
  4. from phase 4, via the Sun, towards phase 11 in PISCES;
    with the Sun in conjunction with MERCURY primary in ARIES;
  5. from the 11th phase, via NEPTUNE, back to the first phase;
    with Neptune in conjunction with PLUTO in GEMINI
  6. from which the whole movement repeats itself;

The above described movement is being fed in the 9th phase from the 10th phase with JUPITER in AQUARIUS via the 6th phase with URANUS in LIBRA..

Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827.
Bonn, 16 December 1770, 13h30 L.T. [ source ]
German-Austrian composer. Of his many famous works the last part, called Alle Menschen werden Brüder, of the 9th symphony is presently popular as a European anthem.
The given birth-time seemed to me to have to be taken a bit later. I assumed 13:38h L.T., then the movement as described below remains intact but the aspect between Jupiter and the Ascendant no longer applies. In this case Jupiter makes not a single aspect, which leads to his distinctive behaviour (he no longer radiates enthusiasm, but it does not prevent him from strongly bringing out his belief in human values via his music).
Beethoven did not move automatically towards the second phase within the Taurus pattern of beginning but, like most people, changed in his own way the perspective within that pattern. As soon as he started something new he went first towards the 9th phase and from there towards the 4th and the 8th, where this movement would stop.

Brief description

Information from the birthchart

  1. Beethoven begins and sends out his initiatives with the intention of keeping an eye on his goal and knowing for sure that he wants and can carry out his plan;
    he combines that with a strong ability for originality and renewal;

  2. he directs his very new initiatives towards harmonious and ideally structured beauty;

  3. from that strategic story he shifts with vulnerability and courage towards his emotional basis;
  4. from that basis of self-confidence he can enter the phase of transformation with great devotion to turn his story into his personal musical language;
    here, following his own path and deep emotionality in grandly schemed design are added;

  5. innerly he continues to transform his grand ideas in a structured manner into music.

The resolute function Mars emphasizes the importance of his work, the damaged sense of hearing working from memory and the inwardly directed energy;
while the function Neptune indicates the pure and individual feel for music.
Dynamics, rhythm and tempo are found in the 9th phase, his fears and worries are indicated by Saturn in the 4th phase.

  1. The ASCENDANT is located in the sign (filter or colouring) of TAURUS;
    with URANUS in Taurus in the 1st phase, in conjunction with the Ascendant;
  2. from the 1st phase, via VENUS primary, towards phase 9 in CAPRICORN;
  3. from phase 9, via SATURN, towards phase 4 in LEO;
  4. from phase 4, via the Sun, towards phase 8 in SAGITTARIUS;

    the 8th phase contains two functions conjunct with the Sun: MERCURY and the Moon, and a bit farther also JUPITER (in Capricorn);
  5. with Jupiter in that phase the movement ends there;

The above described movement is being fed in the 8th phase from the 2nd phase with MARS in GEMINI and
from the 5th phase with NEPTUNE in VIRGO.

The sign Taurus passes daily rather quickly over the horizon. We may therefore expect that the statistical average is not valid here and that (roughly estimated) only about 6,4 percent of the world's population could possibly have a chance to have a Taurus Ascendant. It did surprise me that in my customary sources still relatively many interesting people could be found.

- outline - of the time-in-the-inner-world-claiming pattern of beginning

Fase:
  1. TAURUS At the start I wait and see, always hesitant. I know already what the intention is, but shall I really begin this? Do I see that the form will come out of the background durably, am I convinced that there is also time? When I am convinced, once I have got started, I'll let time work, I am not to be stopped and shall go on until I finish my initiative, till there is a valuable product,
    provided that my attention finally yields a distinction, because
  2. GEMINI I collect knowledge, acquaintances and information. My road leads inward. I need knowledge, I want to see a difference. I put my posessions into perspective. My posessions are light and casual.
    on condition that they are tangible at the end, that an emotional content is present, I can have an emotional bond with it, because
  3. CANCER I make casual contacts on an emotional basis. I sense the difference. I like to exchange experiences. I look for a foothold in knowledge, I need to be sure that the information fits in with the facts.
    In the end I want acquaintances to be loyal, because
  4. LEO my emotional security is my own business, there I must be able to be really me. I need courage to put my basis to a test. The overall view gives me emotional confidence
    and in the end my securities serve my enterprise, because
  5. VIRGO in essence I am modest, critical, interested in details, pure. I serve myself. I analyse myself in detail. My self-confidence is based on self-criticism and purity, is stable.
    In the end I look for an equilibrium, a supplement for cooperation, because
  6. LIBRA in details I am pliable, in my work I always look for other ways, I am artistically minded. I spread my work over several things at the same time. I work in a team.
    In the end I want, concise and practical, to get through to the heart of the matter, I want to do essential and practical work, for
  7. SCORPIO after all, I have all the time in the world. I know already what is the intention, I know where it has to go, otherwise I would not have begun, but I need a supplement which is to-the-point, knows how to come to decisions (conform to my intention), helps to choose.
    That leads to supple cooperation for
  8. SAGITTARIUS I believe in the frame of references of the other, I enjoy that. I switch ideals, I believe in transformation. I head for the essence in a childlike manner, enthusiastic,
    provided the ideal is feasible in the end, because
  9. CAPRICORN I have a familiar, trustworthy goal, an attainable ideal top. The Other's knowledge is respectable. The Other has already precisely mapped out his own route.
    My ideal is eventually renewing, as a result of which
  10. AQUARIUS I strive for equivalence in my profession. I rather like surprises. The enterprise of my supplement is free of tension. I look for social equivalence, democracy, want to exceed limits,
    in order that it leads to social solutions, for
  11. PISCES I want my circle of friends to be boundless, my friends are in essence unfathomable and offer themselves to me. I know instinctively who are my friends. I accept the infinite,
    provided that I also can be practical.
  12. ARIES The Other may work alone, I work hard for the good cause. I prefer practical solutions. I want to let go in a practical way. I put energy in finding solutions, in unleashing things.
    Then I'll absorb the solution quietly, have time, can let time help solve the problem.
