Discussion on names, mostly from the Brandscheid and Hilscheid Kirchebücher.

Chesbach / Hesbach

The name is in German script. I'm not certain about the spelling. The initial is presumably H, but it could be Ch as well. Hesbach however is a rather common name, while Chesbach is quite rare. I have to check wether it could be Rasbach.

Hassing / Stassing

The name is in Latin script. I'm not certain about the initial H. It could be St as well. Hassing however - though primarily a Dutch and Danish name - occurs (1999) 75 times in German telephone directories whereas Stassing is virtually non-existant.

Hastrich / Hastrig et cetera

The spelling with g in stead of ch is found mainly in Latin language entries. In German language entries it is sometimes found where Latin characters are used; in the cases I saw this final g's they were (in the documents) corrected into ch .

Findings outside the Kirchebücher

There is a Hastrig (Jacob) from Matagorda County listed in the 1860 Texas Census Index. As Rick Hastrich confirmed me, this Jacob had a son Charles with his name spelled Hastrich. This might be the Charles from the 1870 Texas Census.

Other names encountered resembling Hastrich:

In the Texas Birth Index Hastrich appears as middle name of Charles Hastrich Duffy, who had a daughter born in 1945.

Ickenroth / Ikenroth

Only one out of eight references from the Brandscheid Kirchebuch Z2 has ck .
The person in question is also referred to as Ikenroth without the c .

M. Kahlenberg / A.K. Kalenberg / (A.)K. Kallenberg

Overseeing the available data in the following table - though not always compatible - I conclude that those names refer to one and the same person.
Most problematic is the Maria. The second occurence of this name (3.2 in the table below) may be really secondary, being copied from the first one (3.1). This first occurence in its turn might well be a mistake. The Brandscheid (and Hillscheid) Kirchebücher reveal several (afterwards corrected) mistakes of this kind.

Reifenberg / Reisenberg

In many cases it is hard to decide wether a f or a long s is meant. Where Latin characters are used, it is always clearly f .

Sasserath / Sassarat / Sassarath / Sasserat / Sasterat / Sastraath

The name occurs six times in my documents with several possible readings, referring probably to one, but possibly to two, or even three, women.

Schuth / Schut

The available data (see the table below) raise several questions:
1) Are these four Leonard's less then four individuals?
There are at least two of them.
2) Are Maria, Catharina and Maria Catharina Hastrich different persons?
They probably are.
3) Should there be a h after Schut ?
Yes, in this case - and in German names generally - it should. Schut without the last h generally is a Dutch name.

Siebert / Sebert / Soebert / Unglaub

"Caroline Unglaub [..] had various last names on her children's baptismal records 1880 to 1894: Sebert; Siebert; Soebert; Unglaub and Hastrich, her married name."
(Quoted from: www.rootsweb.com/~widodge/surnames.htm)
- The Hastrick-file mentioned above spells Seibert, but whereas the sounds of e, ie and oe (or ö) lay quite near each other (especially e and oe are quite interchangeable), the ei-sound is rather different.
- May be Caroline, or possibly her father, married twice.

Wirsdörfer / Wersdorfer / Wirsdorf

It is clear from the data that Wersdorfer is an alternative spelling for Wirsdörfer and runs in the same family. The same I think goes for Wirsdorf, but for that I have as yet no hard proof.
