EMIGRANTS from the province of Overijssel
in 1847 on board of the Phoenix.
-1- the BEUMER-family
Egbert Beumer (a tailor, born 1809) left Holten in 1847 with his wife Harmien Stevens and child Janna for economic and religious reasons. His father was Jan Beumer from Markelo and a farmer on the Beumers-farm. He intended to go to Michigan. He was one of the Seceeders , a member of the Christian Reformed church, as was his stepbrother Teunis(born 1797 and tailor), who travelled with him. They all lost their lives in Lake Michigan with the disaster of the Phoenix on november,21 1847.

-2- the GEERLINGS-family
Gerrit Geerlings, a miller, left Wierden (Enter) in 1847 with his wife and 7 children to go to New York for religious and economic reasons. He was one of the Seceeders ,a member of the Christian Reformed church. Gerrit was born in Meppel(province of Drenthe) in 1803. He married Aaltje de Vries, born 1804, in Zwolle in 1825 and went to Hattem(province of Gelderland) with the de Vries-family.The father of Aaltje was Willem de Vries, born Zwolle 1770,a ships-carpenter and also miller, who died later on in Zwolle. Her mother was Hendrikje van Eelen, born 1764 and died 1847 in Enter. Gerrit was a miller in Hattem at the mill "Fortuin" (Fortune), who was owned by his father-in-law. Who bought the mill in 1825 and sold it again in 1842.
Gerrit Geerlings and Aaltje de Vries had many children, but 7 died before they reached the age of 1 year !
After the mill in Hattem was sold the Geerlings-family went to Apeldoorn and Gerrit became a baker. In 1844 the family went to Wierden-Enter and rented the Enter-mill.
In Hattem Gerrit was a deacon of the dutch Reformed Church and worked together with the well-known reverend Brummelkamp. Geerlings agreed with the feelings of Brummelkamp and was also expelled from the official church.
In 1835 Geerlings was a Seceeder and became a deacon of the Christian Reformed Church. The Seceeders had a very hard time and that was also the reason why the Geerlings family went to Apeldoorn and later on to Wierden- Enter(in 1844). In that small town the Seceeders followed Brummelkamp and not an other , more conservative part, of the Christian Reformed Church.
In 1847 Gerrit decided to emigrate, but why is not very clear, probably because of religious problems. With him went his neighbours Lubbers and Hommers. Gerrit went with his wife and 7 children:
Albert, born Hattem 1826 Willem, born Hattem 1831 Hendrikje, born Hattem 1833 Hendrik Jan,born Hattem 1837 Jacob, born Hattem 1839 Aaltje, born Apeldoorn 1842 and Gerritje, born Apeldoorn 1844.
In 1850 the Population Censuses in America named 4 children and two children were lost with the Phoenix-disaster: Willem and Hendrikje, so 6 in total!
It is said that the oldest son Albert had left the Netherlands several months before the others. In the Population Censuses in America Albert lived in 1860 in Milwaukee City, ward 9, with his wife Catharina and 3 children. The children were born in Wisconsin and Alberts job was r.r. ticket agent. With him lived his sister Aaltje. In 1870 Albert lived in ward 5 of Milwaukee City with his wife and again 3 children.
A legend must be connected with the death of Hendrikje: "Hendrikje lost her life because she went back to get a wrap for Alberta,- the baby, only a few months old, and when she returned, the lifeboats were gone." Alberta Geerlings was born in Enter and the baby died there june,15 1847; 13 days after her birth. It is hard to believe that in the same year on november 21, a same baby with the same name is available !
The Geerlings-family went to Milwaukee City and lived there in 1850 in ward 2, Gerrit as a shoemaker. In 1860 they lived in Milwaukee City in ward 9 and daughter Aaltje(Eliza) had married William Tellier, who was also born in the Netherlands. In 1870 the Tellier's had 2 children:Susan and Henry, born in the state of Wisconsin in 1866 and 1868.This family lived as well in ward 9 of Milwaukee City.
In 1870 son Hendrik Jan (Henry J.) was married with a Josene and had 4 children: Harry, born Wisconsin 1861 Jacob, ,, ,, 1866 William, ,, ,, 1866 (twins?) Elise, ,, ,, 1868. Henry was a moulder, his brother Jacob a shoemaker, who married a Mary ??.Father Gerrit worked in 1870 for a shoemaker, probably his son Jacob.
In 1904 Albert and Jacob were still living in Milwaukee and in 1923 the widow of Henry J. lived in Gilmore City,Iowa.
The daughter Gerritje had a singularly eventful live. She staid for several years with an American family. This family desired to adopt Gerritje(Ida), but her parents refused. The american lady tried to kidnap Ida, but failed. In 1864 Gerritje married reverend Berend VanderLas(born in Eibergen 1834). In 1860 Barant Vanderlos lived in Ridott City,Illinois, and was a theologi- cal student. In 1874 the family went to Holland,Iowa. They had 9 children and Gerritje (Ida) died in 1893 and her husband in 1902.
And last but not least, nothing could be found about the large sum of money Gerrit Geerlings is said to possess at the time of the Phoenix-disaster. In Enter he rented the mill and land! All the same they arrived penniless in Milwaukee City.

-3- the HOMMERS-family
Gerrit Jan Hommers, born 1788 and a farmer, went with his 2 children and a step-child in september 1847 to New York for religious and economic reasons from Wierden-Enter. He was a son of Wilm Hommers and Jenneken Hagreize and married with Aleida Zweers, who was married before with Berend Jan Hommers. Aleida died in 1837 and Gerrit Jan went as a widower with his children to the USA.
In Enter he was one of the Seceeders ,a member of the Christian Reformed church and lived at the farm "de Keijzer" (the Emperor). Hommers sold his farm, which consisted of: a house, a barn, approx. 15 acres of farmland and approx. 20 acres of hayland. All together near the river the Regge. So Hommers was well-to-do and emigrated probably not for economic reasons.

-4- the LANDEWEERD/SCHUPPERT/WISSINK-families
see the relevant descendants-reports.
Later was found that Gerritdina Hakkert, the wife of Hendrik Landeweerd, inherited in 1847 the Hakkertsplaats or erve Hakkert in the Dijkerhoek of Holten (address Deventerweg 89). She had to pay to here brothers and sisters 250 guilders as a compensation. On november 5th the farm was sold to Derk Jan Christiaan Dikkers in Holten.

-5- the LUBBERS-family
The last sentence of Hommers applies also to this family as well,Hendrikus Lubbers was a shoemaker in Enter and emigrated with his wife Marijke, who had a shop, and two children in september 1847. He went for religious and economic(?) reasons to New York and was a Seceeder ,a member of the Christian Reformed church. Hendrikus was born in 1806, as a son of Jan Anthonissen Lubbers and Hendrika de Wilde. He married Marijke Lubbers(born 1801) in 1840, a daughter of Lucas Lubbertsen Lubbers and Leida Kattelaar. The whole Lubbers-family lost their lives with the disaster of the Phoenix on november, 21 1847 in Lake Michigan.
