retrieval software is incorporated within a program
that manages the flow of information through an organization. IMS allows one to
search, capture, edit, distribute, and output electronic information over a
computer network. Documents retrieved are generally text-based and from a local
(user-defined) database. However, some programs do allow users to retrieve
information from external sources (e.g., the Internet) as well as retrieving
information using alternate formats (e.g., image or word processing formats). Vendors
generally do not sell the search module separately from a
IMS package.
