Hyphenation algorithms From the first half of the eighties during about 10 years I have been engaged in developing and applying algorithms and software for automatical hyphenation. Gradually that activity came to a halt, a.o. as a consequence of the increasing availability of built-in hyphenation features in standard text processing software. However, the algorithms and backgrounds, which have been described at that time, still are interesting because of the applied and generally useful principles. It partly concerns summaries of ideas and the operation of the software and the algorithms, and sometimes it concerns more detailed (partial versions of) documents with background information, which actually still are in their draft phase. All possibly interesting texts are being presented here (in practically unaltered form). Most of them are in Dutch, some in English or in both languages. Existing software usage manuals, discussing meta-commands embedded in source text, driving the hyphenation process, are not included here. |
Woordafbreekalgoritmes Vanaf de eerste helft van de 80-er jaren ben ik gedurende ongeveer 10 jaar bezig geweest met het ontwikkelen en gebruiken van algoritmes en software voor automatisch woordafbreken. Die activiteit is langzamerhand stil komen te liggen, o.a. als gevolg van het steeds meer beschikbaar komen van ingebouwde afbreek-faciliteiten in standaard tekstverwerkings-programmatuur. De algoritmes en achtergronden, die destijds beschreven zijn, zijn echter nog steeds interessant vanwege de toegepaste en algemeen bruikbare principes. Deels zijn het samenvattingen van ideeën over en de werking van de software en de algoritmes, en soms ook zijn het meer gedetailleerde (deeluitwerkingen van) documenten met achtergrond-informatie, die eigenlijk nog in hun concept-fase zijn. Alle mogelijk interessante teksten worden hier (in vrijwel ongewijzigde vorm) gepresenteerd. De meeste zijn in het nederlands, sommige in het engels of in beide talen. Bestaande programma gebruikershandleidingen, die meta-commando's tussen brontekst behandelen om het afbreekproces te sturen, worden hier niet opgenomen. |
