THE SPORT

*    Before the eighties I did some swimming,boxing and skydiving

*      SCUBA DIVING (from 1982)

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA.Jules Verne’s book about captain Nemo always fascinated me.Did I become an engineer with the Dutch merchant navy because of him?Anyway I could snorkel all over the world.In front of La Guaira,around Fakfak,at New Guinea and in the Mediterranean.

Already very much grown up I accepted a job in Jeddah(Saudi Arabia).There we had that fantastic dive-paradise:the Red Sea.

There I started to scuba-dive.I found my buddy.His name was

Bill and he really looked like captain Nemo.

We dove a lot together,had wonderful dives.We both liked the nightdiving.The Abhur creek was so special with all kinds of funny and beautiful creatures.We were just as special and fitted in very well.

Since we’re back in Holland I am diving with Pim.He is just as careful a diver as Bill used to be.That is good because I am a bit on the wild side.Still thinking that I am 21 years old and can do what any fish can do.

Until today I logged 161 dives

112 dives in and around Jeddah,

21 dives around Menorca,

3 dives at La Gomera and

25 dives starting from Sharm Al Sheikh.

Never went deeper than 124 feet,The maximum time spent under water was 85 minutes and max.number of dives in one year was 47.

*      RUNNING AND CYCLING (from 1984)

If asked:”What’s your sport?”The answer is, “I am a runner.”

If asked:”Why are you cycling then?”The answer is:”It’s a treat for all joints and you get a bit further away from the downtrodden paths.”

Why run just marathons?

-There is always the push to go training.Even well trained it still hurts.

-Because K.L.is too competitive.In a long run you’ve only to fight fatigue and pain.

*      PRESENT SITUATION    (april2004)

After the 21st marathon (Rotterdam 2001) I got injured rather badly. I could not run so I took to more cycling and tried to work more on the upper body by rowing .In the mean time I bought an exerciser with enough weight load to become mr. Universe 70+.

Of course I am still determined to do at least one more marathon. We got time on our side !
