Sutherlander

De vereniging geeft het contactblad “De Sutherlander” uit dat twee maal per jaar aan de leden wordt toegezonden.

In het blad worden artikelen opgenomen die door de leden zijn verzameld/vertaald of geschreven en behelzen de geschiedenis van Sutherland en/of Schotland.

In Memoriam

Private D. Sutherland killed in action
in the German Trench,
May 16th 1916, and the others who died.

So you were David's father,
And he was your only son,
And the new-cut peats are rotting
And the work is left undone,
Because an old man weeping,
Just an old man in pain,
For David, his son David,
That will not come again.

Oh, the letters he wrote you,
And I can see them still,

You were only Davids's father,
But I had fifty sons
When we went up in the evening
Under the arch of the guns,

My men that trusted me,
More my sons than your fathers'.
For they could only see
The little helpless babies
And the young men in their pride
They could not see you dying,
And hold you while you died.

They saw their first-bom go,
But not the strong limbs broken

the piteous writhing bodies,
They screamed,"Don't leave me , Sir,"
For they were only your fathers
But I wasyour officer.

Ewart Alan Mackintosh (1893-1917)

Ewart Mackintosh was an officer of the 5th Battalion the Seaforht Highlanders. He wrote in memoriam after an incident on 16 may 1916 when he attempted to carry the wounded Private David Sutherland to safety following an attack on the German trenches. Unfortunately despite his efforts, Private Sutherland died and Mackintoshs had toleave his body beforereturning to the British lines. He was awarded the MIlatery Cross for this actions that day.

Mackintosh was killed on 21 Novenber 1917, on the second day of the battle of Cambrai. Hewas 24years old.

Crest-badge

Op de omslag van de de Sutherlander prijkt de Crest-Badge van de Clan Sutherland.

In het midden de wilde kat: het teken van de chief of het hoofd van de clan.
Onder dit teken staat de "wreath": een krans met zes windingen.
Deze wreath geeft aan dat dit een heraldisch wapen is.
De crest is omgeven door een riem met gesp (strap and buckle), waarin het motto: SANS PEUR. Alleen in deze vorm mag de badge door de clanleden worden gedragen; ze duidt aan de gebondenheid met de chief.

Over de oorsprong van het teken van de wilde kat zijn verschillende meningen.
Een vroegere graaf van Sutherland heeft eens gevochten met een wilde kat en deze overwonnen.

Een andere mogelijkheid grijpt verder terug in de geschiedenis.
Voordat een groot deel van Noord-Schotland "Sutherland" heette (de vikingen gaven het de naam Sudrland=Southland=Sutherland), werd het in gailic door de hooglanders "Cataibh" genoemd en de chief was "Morair Cataibh" Lord of Cataibh.
Zodoende kon het karakteristieke dier van deze streek -de wilde bergkat- door de lords als teken worden opgenomen.
