The fortress |
|
The old Byzantium Fortress dominates the east side of the city of Corfu. It is the city's most characteristic monument and is linked with the most important phases of its history during the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods. Its built on a naturally strong site wich, for reasons of defence, was converted from a peninsula into an island by the digging of a channel during the 15th century when the Venetians ruled Corfu. |
