Derk is geboren in de vrije heerlijkheid Rheidt bij Munchen Gladbach op 2 april 1752 als zoon van Wilhelm Ehsers en Helena Gutges. Zijn doopnaam was Diederich. Hij was de 2e zoon van die naam daar de eerste op zeer jonge leeftijd was overleden. Zijn beroep blijkt later timmerman te zijn. Hij behoorde waarschijnlijk tot die handwerkers, die na de verwoesting van het Rijngebied tijdens of na de zevenjarige oorlog (1756-1763) hun land verlieten. Hij komt in de buurt van Arnhem, Wolfheze terecht bij de ontginning Papendal, waar later de boederij Reijgersheide gebouwd wordt. Hier leert hij zijn vrouw Hermina kennen. Bij de lijst van lidmaten van de kerk in Ede komt hij in 1768 niet voor. Hij huwt in Ede op 18 mei 1777 met Hermina van Rheden, die woont en geboren is in Ede. In de geboorteaangifte van haar dochter genoemd Hermina Jeronimussen. Haar vader heette dus Jeronimus. In de lijst van lidmaten van de Hervormde Kerk te Ede wordt hij voor het eerst als lidmaat genoemd in 1796, tijdens Dominee M. Jungeneel onder nr. 10 op het dorp: Dirk Essers. Zijn handtekening komt voor in een Familieraadacte van het Vredesgerecht te Ede Nr. 230. De handtekening is flink en duidelijk geschreven. In het notarieel archief Fischer d.d. 1822,7/2 komt een akte voor waarin hij verzoekt enige roerende goederen te verkopen. Jeronimus wordt dan genoemd bouman onder Ede. Hij verkoopt behalve enig timmergereedschap ook 4 koeien ter waarde van 107 gulden. Christened (Gereformeerd) on 28-08-1785 in Ede (Ge), died on 11-08-1824 in Ede (Ge) at the age of 38. Volgens de overlijdensacte is hij timmerman en wonende op nr. 61. Bij besluit van de familieraad van 24-02-1830 komen de minderjarige kinderen onder voogdij van Johan Gerrit Esser. In een daarop volgende acte van 10-03-1830 wordt Gerritje Puyk genoemd werkster wonende te Ede en wettige voogdes over haar kinderen. Zij verklaarde niet geleerd te hebben schrijven en kan daarom haar handtekening niet onder de acte zetten. Later schijnt zij te wonen in de buurtschap Essen bij Garderen.
