Originally designed to be an entry in the HEMA design contest 1997. The contest brief asked for a set of cleaning products which looked attractive, were hygienic and were easy to use. I choose to create a broom, a dustpan and a brush. The shape of these sweeping products has remained unchanged for decades. As a result most current brooms and dustpans look completely identical. With these new designs an attempt has been made to create some alternative, more graceful objects. Instead of the traditional rim the dustpan uses a gradually sloping indentation to hold the dust. The result is a more sleek, subtly rounded shape, which also is easier to clean. The stiff haired broom is designed to roll over the floor when pulled backward, and lock-up when pushed forward. In this way the broom only sweeps when moving forward. It is no longer necessary to lift up the broom between sweeps, undoubtedly the heaviest part of sweeping, making the chore much less straining. And to complete the set the brush has been given a cylindrical shape to match the shape of the broom. |
