Tropical islands

A geologist by profession and loving (tropical) islands, I am especially interested in the every day application of earth sciences such as geology, physical geography, civil engineering and environmental management, especially on small tropical islands, especially those lying isolated in the big oceans.

These environments often have special problems: lack of mineral resources such as building stone, sand and gravel, lack of fresh water, and very vulnerable natural resources such as very erodable soils and coral reefs that are subject to man induced decay. At the same time, many oceanic islands are subject to strong winds and lots of sunshine, which allow for generation of cheap wind-derived or solar electricity.

On this site some realms of natural science will be dealt with from the perspective isolated, tropical islands
