a new record: two or three transatlantic trips in one month

Op 2 april zien we een prachtig toneelstuk in Washingtons National Theatre.

I am my own wife is het resultaat van toneelschrijver Doug Wright's fascinatie met het leven van Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, een duitse travestiet verstrikt in de grote Europese drama's van de twintigste eeuw. Zij overleefde de Nazi's en het regime dat er in Oost-Duitsland op volgde. Voor ons interessant is dat ze leefde in een deel van Berlijn dat wij goed kennen.

Het stuk won de Pulitzer prijs voor het beste toneelstuk, en een Obie voor de beste solovoorstelling voor Jefferson Mays. Hij speelde alle rollen met grote precisie in de karakters. <<

April 2nd, we see a wonderful play at the National Theatre of Washington DC.

I Am My Own Wife grew out of playwright Doug Wright's fascination with the life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite caught up in the great European dramas of the 20th century. Unlike many contemporaries, von Mahlsdorf survived the Nazi regime and its replacement in East Germany, the Soviet-dominated Communist dictatorship. She lived in a part of Berlin we know well.

It earned a large number of awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for best play and an Obie for best solo performance for Jefferson Mays. He played all the roles with great accuracy in the characters.<<
De eerste transatlantische trip is voor mijn periodieke college over rechtspraak in informatietechnologie voor informaticastudenten aan de Universiteit van Utrecht.Over de inhoud van de bedankfles - Appellation Sol Iustitiae - kan ik niet veel zeggen. Je kunt bij United Airlines echt niet om een kurketrekker en een glas vragen. De fles is in Utrecht gebleven. Er schijnen mensen te zijn die deze wijn nog niet door de sla doen! <<

The first transatlantic trip was for my regular contribution to the course on legal informatics for informatics students at the University of Utrecht.The thank-you bottle of Appellation Sol Iustitiae remained a mystery to me. Asking a United Airlines flight attendant for a corkscrew and a glass is not an option. The bottle stayed in Utrecht. I am told some people would not pour it over their salad! <<
Neef Rick wordt 18. We vieren het die dinsdagavond in Utrecht met zijn enig overgebleven liefhebbende oma. << That evening in Utrecht, we celebrated my nephew Rick's 18 birthday, with him and his only remaining, doting grandmother. <<

 

Wednesday back in Washington we tour the cherry blossoms. They have come out since I last inspected them on Sunday morning.

The cherries are a great backdrop for photographers. <<
Op woensdag, terug in Washington, maken Wim en ik een lange wandeling langs de kersenbloesem die sinds zondag, toen ik voor de laatste keer keek, is gaan bloeien. Een geweldig canvas voor fotografen.<<

Kennedy Center: Mozarts Zauberflote in een enscenering van Gerald Scarfe. Prachtige cartoonachtige beelden voor dit niet kapot te krijgen verhaal.

Meteen na het weekend is er de cursus voor rechtspraakhervorming in Franstalig Afrika. Pierre Meyer, Fernand Ouadragou in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso en ik in Washington vertellen over case management en alternatieve geschillenbeslechting, gestion des cas et MARL, methodes alternatives de reglement de ligites, voor groepen in Tananarivo in Madagascar, Cotonou in Benin, Dakar in Senegal en Ougadougou. <<

This performance of Mozart's Magic Flute at the Kennedy Center was magic indeed. Designed by Gerald Scarfe, the stage was filled with cartoon-like images of this indestructible story.

Right after the weekend, there was the distance learning course for judicial reform in Francophone Africa. Pierre Meyer, Fernand Ouadragou in Ouagadougou and myself in Washington discussed case management and alternative dispute resolution, with audiences in Tananarivo in Madagascar, Cotonou in Benin, Dakar in Senegal and Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. <<


Tegen de avond vertrek ik voor een missie naar Roemenie. Het kantoor van de Bank is zoals gewoonlijk goed te herkennen aan de satellietschotel op het dak. Het is een prachtige villa met geweldig gedails zoals dit glas in lood-raam. <<

  

In the evening, I leave for a mission to Romania. Below, the usual pictures of the World Bank office and the visiting missions office inside. Bank buildlings the world over can be recognized by the satellite dish on the roof. The Romania office is in a lovely villa with wonderful details like this leaded window. <<

We visited a number of courts in Bucharest, and on the Black Sea coast in Constanta and in Tulcea.<<

The Athenee Plaza Hilton Hotel is very conventiently located right next to the Romanian Atheneum, the concert hall. We went to two concerts: one by the local symphony orchestra "George Enescu" (left) and one by mezzo soprano Mihaela Agachi and Verona Maier, piano (right). Music by Romania's George Enescu is always part of the program. Mihaela and Verona also performed Mahlers Kindertotenlieder. Actor Silviu Geamanu read the translations.
Ons hotel is vlak naast het plaatselijke concertgebouw. We gaan naar het symfonieorkest "George Enescu"en op een andere avond naar een recital door Mihaela Agachi, mezzosopraan, en Verona Maier piano. Muziek van Grote Zoon George Enescu is altijd deel van het programma. Mihaela en Verona brachten ook de Kindertotenlieder van Mahler ten gehore. De vertalingen werden voorgelezen door acteur Silviu Geamanu. <<
Woensdag: terug naar Washington via Frankfurt. De opera van Frankfurt doet Ariodante van Handel. De muziek is prachtig. De handeling is vormgegeven als een poppenkast, ik vermoed omdat er niet veel regie-aanwijzingen voorhanden zijn. Als ik een kaartje wil gaan kopen biedt een onbekende mevrouw mij een ongebruikte abonnementsplaats naast de hare aan. Helemaal gratis. Vielen Dank!
In de pauze een glaasje wijn. Op het plein voor de opera staat een sculptuur in de vorm van een reusachtige Euro. Tja... <<
Wednesday: back to Washington via Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, the opera does Handel's Ariodante. Wonderful music. It is staged as a puppet show, presumably because there are very few instructions with regard to the direction. As I appraoch the ticket booth, an unknown woman offers me the unused subscription seat next to hers. Vielen Dank!
The plaza in front of the opera is adorned with a sculpture of a giant Euro. Well...<<

Donderdag eerst ook nog naar Nederland. 's Avonds gezellig eten bij Aqua in Haarlem, met Wim die hier een klusje aan het doen is. Dat is de derde transatlantische reis van de maand!
Op vrijdag wandelen met Paula. Aan het eind van de wandeling komen we langs het Rietveld-Schröder-Huis. Een van de mooiste huizen van de wereld. Bussen vol Japanners en andere buitenlanders komen het bekijken.
's Avonds eten en logeren bij onze vrienden Leo en Conny in Amersfoort.

Op zaterdag op bezoek bij mijn moeder in de Bilt en een laat diner met Jacolien. <<

Thursday, back to Holland. In the evening, a cosy dinner with Wim who is here for a job. His trip is the third transatlantic trip of the month.
On Friday, a long walk with Paula. At the end, we pass the Rietveld-Schröder House. It is one of the most beautiful houses in the world. Busloads of Japanese and other international visitors come to see it.
Dinner and overnight with Leo and Conny in Amersfoort complete the day.

On Saturday a visit to my mother and a late dinner with Jacolien. <<

Remember the boring long underpass in Frankfurt airport? It now has an electronic work of art with changing light making it much more interesting.
Het vliegveld van Frankfurt heeft een hele lange saaie gang onder de grond. Die is nu opgeknapt met een elektronisch kunstwerk van gekleurd licht. <<
Terug in Washington. Bezoek van Marlies Bouman en haar dochter Katja. We eten buiten aan het Washington Waterfront Marlies praat op de Bank met mijn collega's over haar werk in Oeganda en het Hague forum for judicial expertise. Back in Washington, my colleague Marlies Bouman comes to visit with her daughter Katja. We have dinner outside on the Washington waterfront. Marlies visits the Bank to exchange views and experience, from her work in Uganda and with the Hague forum for judicial expertise, with my colleagues in the Bank.
