Op 2 februari
vliegen we 's morgens heel vroeg naar Fort Lauderdale. Het regent pijpestelen
in Washington. Om tien uur staan we in de volle zon. We halen de auto af
en zetten de neus naar het zuiden. Ons eindpunt is Key West, het zuidelijkste
puntje van de VS.
In Miami doen we een rondje langs de art deco hotels die hier in de jaren
dertig van de vorige eeuw het begin vormden van grootschalig toerisme. We
lunchen in Lincoln Road Mall bij het Cafe at Books and Books. We kopen bij
B&B meteen een gids, Hidden Florida Keys, en een kaart. De Cayos de
Florida, of Florida Keys zijn een snoer eilandjes aan de zuidkant van Florida.

On February
2nd, at the crack of dawn, we fly to Fort Lauderdale. Pouring rain in Washington.
At ten in the morning, we stand in full sunshine. We pick up the car and
turn south. Our destination is Key West, the southernmost point of the US.
In Miami we tour the art deco hotels, built in the '30s as the beginning
of large scale tourism. We have lunch in Lincoln Road Mall at the Cafe at
Books and Books. At B&B, we buy a guide called Hidden Florida Keys,
and a map. The Cayos de Florida are a chain of small islands at the southern
end of Florida. << |

via een verbinding tussen de eilanden die in het begin van de 20e eeuw is
gebouwd als spoorlijn. Na een wervelstorm die in 1935 veel schade aanrichtte

The connection between
them was built in the early 20th century as a railroad. After a hurricane
in 1935 destroyed the bridges, only a road is left. << |
| Onze eerste
overnachting is Sea Farer Resort in Key Largo, beroemd van een film die
grotendeels ergens anders opgenomen is. het resort lig taan de Golf van
Mexico. We eten aan de Atlantische Oceaan, vijf minuten lopen aan de andere
kant van het eiland. In Mandalay, een oude zeemanskroeg onder de blote hemel.
Er is levende muziek. Bejaard uitziende stellen van onze leeftijd dansen
er op levende muziek.<< |

Our first
overnight stop is in Key Largo at the Sea Farer Resort. Key Largo is world
famous for a film that was mostly shot elsewhere. The resort is on the Gulf
of Mexico. We have dinner on the Atlantic Ocean, five minutes away on the
other side of the island. In Mandalay, an old seamen's hangout, under a
starry sky. Seniors our age dance to live music.<< |
| Op dag 2 wandelen we
in Long Key State Park langs de oceaan. Er is een boardwalk door het mangrovebos.
Daarna is er een zandpad langs de zee. Al snel zien we alleen nog maar ibissen
en reigers. Als we bijna rond zijn begint het te gieten. We rijden in de
stromende regen naar Key West. << |

On day 2, we take a
walk in Long Key State Park along the ocean. There is a boardwalk throught
the mangrove forest. Then, a sandy path leads along the sea. We quickly
run into ibis and egrets. At the end of the walk rains starts pouring down.
We drive to Key West in the rain. << |
Waar anders moet
je hier overnachten dan in het Southernmost Hotel?
Op het zuidelijkste puntje komen Cubanen om dicht bij Cuba te zijn zonder
uit de VS te vertrekken.
Op zaterdagavond eten we bij Seven Fish na twee uur wachten op een vrije
tafel.
Where else but at the Southernmost Hotel would we stay?
And at Southernmost point Cubans gather to be closest to home without
leaving the US. We have dinner at Seven Fish, after a two hour wait for
a free table. << |

Op zondagmorgen
bekijken we het huis van Ernest Hemingway, vooral beroemd vanwege de katten
met zes tenen. Archie, op het bed, doet flink mee tijdens de rondleiding.
Na de brunch bij Blue Heaven - na anderhalf uur op de wachtlijst - draaien
we de auto om en rijden weer naar het noorden. We komen uit in Grassy
Key en regelen het zwemmen met de dolfijnen voor maandagmorgen. Het valt
niet mee om onderdak te vinden want de Superbowl wordt gespeeld en dan
valt het land stil. We wandelen over een stuk van de oude verbinding en
zien de zon ondergaan boven de Golf. De volgende morgen gaat de zon op
boven de oceaan. <<

On Sunday morning we
visit Ernest Hemingway's house, most famous for its six-toed cats. Archie,
on the bed, is an active participant in the guided tour. After brunch at
Blue Heaven - after one and a half hours on the waiting list - we turn the
car around and drive north again. We end up on Grassy Key and arrange for
swimming with the dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center on Monday morning.
It is hard to find a place to sleep. Everybody is watching the Superbowl.
We take a walk on the old railway and see the sun set in the Gulf. The next
morning, the sun rises over the ocean. << |

De
laatste dag van dit korte tripje. De dolfijnen zijn goed getraind en zij
en jij worden heel kort gehouden door de trainers in het Dolphin Research
Center. Het zwemmen duurt iets meer dan een kwartier.We trakteren onszelf
nog op key lime pie in het Key Largo Coffee House. Ze hebben hier perfecte
darjeeling thee. Dat kom je buiten India niet vaak tegen.

The
last day of this short trip. The dolphins are very well trained and they
and you are strictly controlled by the trainers at the Dolphin Research
Center. The swimming lasts a little more than fifteen minutes.
We treat ourselves to key lime pie at the Key Largo coffee house. They
have perfect darjeeling tea, very exceptional outside India. << |
Intussen
was door Human Resources van de Bank mijn contract echt verlengd. Christina
en ik hadden dat in oktober al afgesproken, maar de dingen gaan niet vanzelf,
en ook niet snel. Christina wil graag dat ik mijn plan met een web site
met kennis voor case management uitvoer, en we waren het snel eens dat dat
niet ging lukken voor 7 maart 2006. Nu blijven Wim en ik tot eind mei 2007
in Washington en bij de Bank. Tegen die tijd zien we verder.
Intussen kregen wij een dagje sneeuw. Franklin Roosevelt en zijn hondje,
van het gelijknamige monument, zien er ineens heel anders uit.
Op 16 februari vliegen we samen naar Sri Lanka. Dit keer allebei voor in
het vliegtuig.<< |

Meanwhile, World Bank
HR had actually extended my contract. Christina and I had agreed to do that
in October, but thing do not move easily, and certainly not quickly. Christina
wants me to complete my project of a web site with case management knowledge.
We knew that was not going to happen before March 7 2006. Wim and I will
now stay in Washington and with the Bank until the end of May 2007. By then,
we will see.
Meanwhile, we got covered in snow for a day. FDR and his dog, of the monument
of the same name, suddenly look completely different.
On February 16, we fly to Sri Lanka. This time, both in the front of the
plane. << |
| De Bank
geeft zijn gehuwde werknemers elke dag dat ze op missie zijn een spouse
point. Als je er 150 bij elkaar gespaard hebt mag je op kosten van de bank
je spouse meenemen op een missie. Omdat je maar nooit weet wanneer je laatste
missie geslagen heeft, doen we dat nu maar vast. Dit is ongeveer de langste
afstand die je kunt vliegen,dus dat is veel bang for the buck. We vliegen
Washington-Frankfurt en dan meteen Frankfurt-Colombo erachteraan. Op zaterdagmorgen
vroeg zijn we weer in het Hilton. Galle Face Green langs het strand is weer
als vanouds gezellig. Deze mevrouw koopt plastic bloemen en is er erg blij
mee. << |

The Bank gives
its married staff a spouse point for each day they are on mission. For every
150 points, you are allowed to take your spouse on a mission. You never
know when your last mission will be so we do it now. And besides, this is
about the longest distance we can fly so it is maximum bang for the buck.
We fly Washington-Frankfurt and Frankfurt-Colombo two hours later. Early
Saturday morning we are back in the Hilton. Galle Face Green along the beach
is lively as usual. This lady buys plastic flowers and is really pleased
with them.<< |

orde van advocaten. Zij doet alleen grote strafzaken. Ze vertelde me dat
ze zo blij is dat ze haar geloof kan uitdragen in deze functie. Ze is rooms-katholiek.
Het kostte enige moeite haar op een ander onderwerp te brengen. In haar
toespraak tot onze delegatie bedankte ze de Bank voor het financieren van
de verbouwing. Het vernieuwde gebouw dwingt veel meer respect voor de justitie
af, en ook de gebruikers voelen zich meer gerespecteerd.
Na afloop zijn we net als de vorige keer vier dagen het land in getrokken.

Field visit to inspect

She told me she is so glad she can mention her faith in God in this role.
She is a roman catholic. It was hard to get her to change the subject. In
her speech, she thanked the Bank for financing the reconstruction. The building
now bestows respect on the administration of justice. The users also feel
a lot more respected.
After the mission, we travelled around the country for four days with a
car and driver.
Early one morning, we visited Yala National Park. << |
Ze komen
je om half vijf halen met een jeep, en dan ga je een heel eind het park
in. Ontbijtpakketje mee. Dit park heeft krokodillen, heel veel vogels en
kleiner grut, olifanten en luipaarden. Die luipaarden deden die dag niet
mee, maar verder kwam het allemaal langs. Ontbijten doe je na afloop op
het strand, na een uur of negen. Daar staat een monument naast de fundering
die nog over is van een totaal weggevaagd gebouw. Op 26 december 2004 om
9.20 uur kwamen hier ongeveer honderd (geloof ik) Duitse, Japanse en andere
toeristen om toen de tsunami toesloeg. Zegt een bord. Ik kijk op mijn horloge.
Het is vijf voor half tien. Dan kijk ik naar zee en probeer me voor te stellen
hoe dat gegaan moet zijn.<<

They come and pick
you up with a jeep, and then they drive you way into the park. You bring
a packaged breakfast. The park has crocodiles, lotof birds, smaller fry,
elephants and leopards. The leopards did not play that day, but everything
else put in an appearance. Afterwards, at about 9:00 AM, you eat your breakfast
on the beach. There is a monument on the beach, next to a foundation, all
that is left of a building. On December 26 2004 at 9:20 about a hundred
(I recall) German, Japanese and other tourists perished here when the tsunami
hit. Says the sign. My watch says it is 9:25. I look at the sea and try
to imagine what that must have been like.<< |

we zijn op het zuidelijkste puntje van het land geweest en mochten tegen
betaling op de vuurtoren. Daar kijk je naar het zuiden, ziet niets, en weet
dat er tot Antartica ook niets is. Links is Australie, rechts Zuid Afrika.
De vuurtorenwachter maakte de foto. Zowaar voor niks. Na de vuurtoren kwam
het Hollandse fort in Galle. Dat ziet er van een afstand uit als Hindeloopen.
Pas van dichtbij wordt het exotisch. Sri Lanka is in de achttiende eeuw
gekoloniseerd door de Hollanders. Ze hebben nog wat oude wetgeving van ons
in gebruik. Ze zijn altijd weer verbaasd als ik uitleg dat wij allang nieuwe
wetten hebben. << |

Whatever, we visited
the southernmost point and for a small sum were allowed to climb the lighthouse.
You look south, see nothing, and know there is nothing until Antarctica.
To the left is Australia, to the right, South Africa. The lighthouse keeper
took the picture, for free!
After the lighthouse came the Dutch fort of Galle. From a distance, it looks
like Hindeloopen, my paternal grandmother's birthplace in the north of the
Netherlands. In close up, it is much more exotic. Sri Lanka was colonised
by the Dutch in the 18th century. They still use some Roman-Dutch laws.
They keep being surprised by the news that we have had new laws for a long
time. << |
