Magda viert haar verjaardag. Er is alle reden voor een groot feest. In een
monumentaal pand in Nieuwendam dineren we met ons zestigen. Het is heel
gezellig. << |

Magda celebrates her birthday. There are lots of reasons for a big party.
Sixty plus of us dine in a monumental home in Nieuwendam, just north of
Amsterdam. It was wonderful. << |

De foto's van Marc komen als proef terug van de drukker. Gedrukt op zijde.
De kamer is meteen vol als we de lap uitrollen. En dit is niet eens ware
grootte!
Wat is mooier dan
1 Stradivarius? Vier! Een heel kwartet speelt Mozart op de Strads omdat
Mozart 250 jaar geleden geboren werd. De twee violen, een altviool en
1 cello zijn van de Smithsonian Institution.<< |

exhibition in Kazakhstan and surroundings. His pictures come back as a
test print, printed on silk. The room is full right away when we unfold
it. An this is not even life size!
What sounds better
than 1 Stradivarius? Four! A full quartet plays Mozart on the Strads for
his 250th birthday. The two violins, a viola and a cello are part of the
Smithsonian Institution's collection. << |

Een schenking van Herbert Axelrod die rijk is geworden met het schrijven
van populair-wetenschappelijke boekjes over tropische vissen. Herb deed
er ook een fonds bij om de instrumenten te laten bespelen. Dat moet, anders
verpieteren ze. Wij komen luisteren in de Renwick Gallery. De grote salon
hangt vol met zeshonderd schilderijen van George Catlin. Die trok er in
de jaren '40 van de 19e eeuw op uit en legde vast wat hij in het Wilde Westen
aantrof. Zeshonderd Indianen, beren en bisons kijken op ons neer. << |

loan, and then a donation, from Herbert Axelrod who made his fortune writing
popular books on tropical fish. Herb included a trust fund to have the instruments
played. Unplayed, they wither. We come to the Renwick Gallery to listen.
The Grand Salon's walls are covered in George Catlin's over 600 paintings.
In the 1840's, he went out to the West and painted what he saw. Six hundred
Indians, bears and bison look down on us while we listen to Mozart. << |

in Politics and Prose Bookshop: Julian Barnes. Geshortlist voor de Booker
Prize met Flaubert's Parrot. Hij is uit Engeland gekomen om een book
tour te doen voor zijn nieuwe boek Alfred and George. Drie weken lang
twee of drie keer per dag een stukje voorlezen en vragen beantwoorden. Hij
is nog maar drie dagen op pad en dus nog fris. Het is enig. << |

prize with Flaubert's Parrot. He has come from England to do a book
tour for his new book, Alfred and George. Three weeks, two or three
stops a day, read a little and answer some questions. He is only three days
into it and still fresh. We had a great time. << |
