Mijn vroegere baas Maria Dakolias verwacht half april haar kind. Het is een jongetje. Haar vrouwelijke collega's hebben voor haar een baby shower georganiseerd. Het idee is dat de vriendinnen voor de babyuitzet zorgen. Maria heeft lijsten op een paar web sites: Babys 'r us en Target. Daar kun je iets aanschaffen van de lijst die ze heeft gemaakt. Opvallend item - voor mij - is een apparaat dat natte doekjes op de juiste temperatuur brengt voor de billetjes. Iedereen blijkt er een te hebben en dat nog nodig te vinden ook. Er wordt dus flink uitgepakt, maar er is ook erg veel voedsel in aanmerkig genomen het tijdstip van drie uur 's middags, en we doen ook nog een spelletje. Het punt van het spelletje is wie de meeste wensen voor Maria en haar zoontje kan bedenken. <<

An item that stands out is the warmer for wet wipes. Everyone has one, it turns out and they really need them too. So there is a lot of unwrapping, and a lot of food, taking into account that the party is at three in the afternoon. We also play a game, the point of which is to think up the most wishes for Maria and her baby son. <<
<<  Tegen de verwachting in is in de loop van maart de flat in De Bilt verkocht. Het is goed dat we alles ingericht hebben laten staan. Maar dat betekent wel dat we nu snel moeten handelen om leeg op te kunnen leveren. Dus vlieg ik voor een lang weekend naar Nederland om de bibliotheek te verkopen en Paula te helpen met andere dingen. Dat gaat allemaal naar wens, en er is ook nog tijd voor andere dingen. Zoals het optreden van A Friday Smile, de band van Paula's zoon Rick tijdens Utrechts Kunstbende 2007. De hele schouwburg vol tieners, heel bijzonder.

Against all expectations, the apartment in De Bilt was sold in March. Just as well we left all the furniture the way it was. But now we have to get rid of it quickly. So I fly to Holland to sell the library and help Paula with other things. It all goes well, and there is even time for other things. Like the performance by A Friday Smile, the bank in which Rick, Paula's son, plays the guitar. During the festival, I see an entire theatre full of teenagers, very special. <<

Om alvast een beetje te wennen rijd ik naar Parnassia. Mijn wandeling wordt bemoeilijkt door hoog water op het wandelpad. Al die Nederlanders aan het strand zijn wel een beetje beklemmend, maar dat heb ik altijd met grote groepen. Het zal wel weer wennen.

Terug in Washington is het tijd voor de cherry blossoms. Deze boom hield het niet meer na al het mooie weer van de laatste dagen.

De volgende dag al gaan we naar het Kennedy Center voor Die Walkure in de enscenering van Francesca Zambello. Vorig jaar zagen we Das Rheingold. De Washington Post vond het toen niks, maar deze vinden ze prachtig. De foto hiernaast is van een oude uitvoering want de plaatjes zijn heel erg beschermd en fotograferen is streng verboden. Placido Domingo als Siegmund is inmiddels vier jaar ouder maar zijn stem is nog heel goed ondanks een koutje. Het allermooiste vond ik de lange scene aan het eind waarin Wotan zijn dochter Brunhilde moet straffen omdat ze hem ongehoorzaam is geweest. <<

The next day, we go to the Kennedy Center for Die Walkure directed by Francesca Zambello. Last year we saw Das Rheingold. The Washington Post did not like that one, but now they really love it. This picture is from an older performance because taking pictures is strictly forbidden. Placido Domingo as Siegmund is four years older now, but in spite of a cold his voice is still wonderful. My favorite was the long scene at the end when Wotan must punish his daughter Brunhilde for disobeying him. <<

We hebben, onder leiding van Christina Biebesheimer, een hele leuke discussie over hoe je dat meten nou eigenlijk moet doen. Op zaterdag is het feest voor de trouwerij van Klaus en Wayne. Er is een buffet met Indiase curries en appeltaart toe. Het is prachtig weer, dus het buffet staat in de tuin. In de melee geen plaatjes gemaakt.
