Welcome to the Beta Test 3.0 Download Page

Below are beta versions of the SETI@home 3.0 client. Though the eventual release number will be 3.0, the current build number is 2.71. Please click on the appropriate links to obtain the right versions for different operating systems.

The SETI@home beta client version 2.71 fixes the major bugs that the beta testers have reported. These include the negative values sometimes displayed for pulse and gaussian scores, repeated client restarts, and a variety of graphics display problems.

NOTE ON FFT GRAPHS:

To take better advantage of the science code's speed, the client now continues calculating additional FFTs and searching for Gaussians, Pulses and Triplets while it finishes drawing an earlier FFT. This means we now draw only those FFT graphs for which there is time without pausing the science code.

As a result, the FFT graph will not necessarily represent the Doppler shift rate and resolution indicated in the "Data Analysis" display panel; the information in that panel always indicates what the scientific code is doing at the time, not necessarily what is shown in the FFT graph panel (the bottom section of the display).

NOTE ON SPEED:

The new beta version is not as fast as the previous 2.70 version. This is due to an extension we made to the chirp rates analyzed by the client. Now, the client looks for signals at chirp rates ranging from -50 Hz/sec up to +50 Hz/sec. Signals with a chirp rate in the added range (-50 Hz/sec to -10 Hz/sec and +10 Hz/sec to +50 Hz/sec) would probably originate from a source accelerating at a high speed, such as an extraterrestrial satellite or moon. This analysis for satellite or moon based signals opens up a whole new area of searching that has never been performed before. Overall, the client should run roughly 50% slower than it did in version 2.04.

Thanks for all your testing. Assuming there are no significant bugs found in this version, this will probably become the final version 3.0 that will be released.

Please note that you should download the software now because you will not be allowed to return to this page at a later time.

The Mac and Windows versions work just like regular SETI@home installers, in that you shouldn't have a current client running when you install the new software, and you will lose your current work unit in progress (you may want to wait until it's done). Hopefully things will be self explanatory.

The big change in 3.0 is vastly improved science - we are now searching for pulses and triplets as well as spikes and gaussians. Web pages describing these in more detail will be up soon on the main home page. Other improvements include optimized FFTs (for faster analysis of wave data) and various bug fixes.

Any and all feedback is welcome. Even if you have nothing but positive things to say. We want to know if something is working or not. Please send all comments to us via e-mail (beta@setiathome.berkeley.edu), but keep in mind we may not be able to respond immediately.

And now, the moment you've been waiting for.. The new clients!
