Hardware addon, SETI acceleratorŽ: ================================== SETI acceleratorŽ pci board - KrasnoConv Solutions: "This innovative pci board was designed to significantly speed up the process of work unit calculation." It was a joke, many people fell for it. I even requested some additional information, read their reply below. They were online at www.krasnoconv.com/index.html, site has been taken offline. A 'screengrab' of the 'user interface' is all that remains. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 01:39:12 +0400 From: "KrasnoConv Krasnokutovka" To: adas@home.nl SETI accelerator was designed by Pjotr Kowaljow, a student of computer science that works in our company. While working on his project he came in touch with some of the technicians who had worked on the original chip design of the MP-105-D. Being a SETI@home user he recognized the FFT potential of the chip and developed the prototype of the CA-01 board. After he presented his idea several collegues joined him in their spare time. They convinced the management to allow the usage of company resources for further developement and as a result the CA-01, the CA-06 and our website were presented to the public. The SETI accelerator board is designed to put almost no extra load on the host computer it is used in. The minimum requirements are 486 CPU, 32 MB RAM, 256 Colour, 5 MB space on HD plus 500K on HD per WU (=processor installed) SETI accelerator hardware will run in any computer that has a free PCI slot. It is tested to a PCI Bus clock frequency of up to 40Mhz. The limiting factor at present are the drivers and the GUI for the various platforms. Software for PC´s runnig Windows(TM) 95/98/NT/2000 and linux are available. Drivers for Macintosh Systems and others are in preparation or Beta. The SETI accelerator hardware has already gone through extensive testing and is running stable in all environments. The management software for further platforms as well as the existing is under constant developement and new releases will have to be beta-tested by selected users. At present SETI accelerator is still a part time project run by enthusiasts. Developement as well as final assembly of the boards are more or less done "on demand".
