IV.8 Töger Larsson KILEN, born on 02-10-1834 in Jostedalen Norway, died on 02-09-1936 in Luster Norway at the age of 101, buried in Luster Norway. He lived in the farm area of Kilen in a valley that was very steep on both sides, which was very common for snowslides and rockslides. Kilen was where people would stop to rest before climbing the mountains.
Toger, Gjertrud, Lars en Ole were buried in a snow avalanche. Toger was able to dig himself out, but was unable to save his wife and 2 children.
Toger lived to be 102 years old and was in good health until his eyesight failed at 91 years old. Son of Lars Larsson BORGUND (see also III.1) and Eli Olsdotter BERGSETH.

V.18 Christian Theodore (Carl) KILEN, railroad laborer, born on 20-01-1888 in Luster Norway (religion: LU), died on 18-05-1962 in Bismarck (ND) USA at the age of 74, buried in Almont Cemetery (ND) USA. In 1907 he and his brother Christopher came to America where they joined their brothers Andrew and Elias. Carl worked as a farm laborer in the tobaco fields in Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin area. Later he settled in the Curlew area where his brother Andrew lived and began working as a section laborer on the N.P. Railroad in 1917.
After he married Frances, they lived in the section house at Curlew. It was the scene of many area gatherings where Carl would play his old time button accordian and everyone enjoyed dancing and visiting.
When the family was older, they rented farms in the area and Carl would walk or ski to and from work, as he had learned to ski in the mountains of Norway. He drove a Model T Ford, but never mastered shifting gears. One Sunday, as the family prepared to go to a ballgame, he drove through the yard fence and hit the porch. He never tried to drive again.
In the 40 years with the railroad, Carl witnessed the changes from the steam engines to the modern diesel engines. He retired in 1957 and spent his later years enjoying a favorite hobby, fishing. Son of Töger Larsson KILEN (see also IV.8) and Kari Olsdotter BERGSETH.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm CST on Sunday, August 3 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, followed by prayer service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
 
Helen was born October 15, 1920 to Herman and Martha (Borchers) Joersz in Morton County. She was baptized on November 21, 1920 and confirmed August 4, 1935 in New Salem. Helen attended school through the 6th grade. On March 26, 1944 she married Norman Kilen and they made their home in the New Salem-Almont area where they raised their five children. Helen was Norman´s right hand in farming and ranching. She was a talented homemaker and enjoyed needlework, gardening, baking, flowers, pets, listening to accordion music, playing harmonica, and especially loved children.
 
After Norman died in June of 1977 she continued living on the farm until 1991 when she moved to Mandan, where she lived for 14 years. In 2005 Helen moved to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck where she made many friends, enjoyed the music, bingo, needlework, and all of the visits she had.
 
Blessed to have shared her life are her children, Carol (Duane) Zimmerman, Mandan, Arlene (Eddie) Becknell, Bismarck, Ethel (Doug) Heald, Sunrise Beach, Missouri, and Dwight (Colleen) Kilen, Bismarck; son-in-law, Bert Esser, Hoogeveen, Netherlands; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; Norman´s siblings, Ethleen Hoovestol and Charlotte (Edwin) Thiel, both of New Salem, Virgil Kilen, Thornton (Caroline) Kilen, and Tharen (Mary) Kilen, all of Mandan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
 
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Norma; three sisters and three brothers, Ella (Carl) Westmeyer, Emma (Walter) Matthisen, Arnold (Florence) Joersz, Kathryn (Henry) Joersz, Bill (Florence) Joersz, and Emil (Hildegarde) Moos; 4 sister-in-laws; and 2 brother-in-laws. Anna Marie was a Brownie Troop Leader, Camp Fire Leader; a member of the Club of ´51 Homemakers, Sons of Norway, and the Red Hat Society. She was always there for her two girls and made all feel welcomed
