The main Battle of the Goths event was the General 10x8 Championship 2008, where the engines had to combat each other in a full round robin over 5 different opening positions: Gothic, Bird, Embassy, Capablanca, and Carrera Chess. Some exceptions to this were made: engines not licensed for Gothic Chess played a substitute in stead. TSCP Gothic, which is unable to play Embassy, Capablanca and Carrera was allowed to play its games from three different fantasy setups in stead.

ConditionsRound robin with 10 games per pairingCore 2 Duo, 2.4GHz, 128MB hash time control 55'+5" Windows Vista, WinBoard 4.3.13 (Smirf using the Smirfoglot WB adapter). Games started from 5 different positions, each played with black and white, taken from the following set: rnbqckabnr/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RNBQCKABNR w KQkq - 0 1 (Gothic) rnbcqkabnr/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RNBCQKABNR w KQkq - 0 1 (Bird) rnbackqbnr/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RNBACKQBNR w KQkq - 0 1 (Embassy) rnabqkbcnr/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RNABQKBCNR w KQkq - 0 1 (Capablanca) ranbqkbnar/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RANBQKBNCR w KQkq - 0 1 (Carrera) rnbqakcbnr/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RNBQAKCBNR w KQkq - 0 1 (Gothic substitute) rnbaqkcbnr/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RNBAQKCBNR w KQkq - 0 1 (Embassy substitute) rabnqknbcr/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RABNQKNBCR w KQkq - 0 1 (Capablanca substitute) rcbnqknbar/pppppppppp/10/10/10/10/PPPPPPPPPP/RCBNQKNBAR w KQkq - 0 1 (Carrera substitute) These initial positions wer set up in the engines by using 'setboard' or 'edit' to load a position, or feeding them moves from the Gothic position (a kludge to accomodate TSCP-G). The ChessLive! viewer does not show any such loaded moves, but they do appear in the PGN file. So ignore all moves in the PGN that don't have annotations: they were not made by the engines, but part of the setup procedure. |
