Marinus Solomon GAAL was born on 4 March, 1834 at Arnhem, The Netherlands, the fifth child of Salomon Marinus GAAL and Elisabeth Catharina TROULJA.
In the 1850s he travelled to Semarang, Indonesia (formerly a Dutch colony) with his brother Pieter Cornelius GAAL and sister Anna Maria GAAL. Sometime before 1861 he arrived in Sydney where he worked for the remainder of his life as a mariner and boatman for the Marine Board Department. He also qualified as a third class engineer with the Marine Board just before he died in 1887.
Marinus married Catherine LALL(E)Y on 28 October 1861 at St Mary’s Cathedral (Roman Catholic), Sydney, NSW. At the time of his marriage, Marinus was living in Windmill Street at The Rocks. The family lived at 17 Pottinger Street, The Rocks for a number of years before settling in Alma Street, Darlington/Redfern from at least 1874.
Marinus died on 23
December 1887 at Sydney Hospital, NSW, aged 56, after spending three
weeks in hospital with congestion of the lungs.. He was buried on 25
December 1887 at Rockwood Cemetery (Church of England), NSW.

Catherine LALL(E)Y was born between 1839-40 at Lough Rea,
County Galway, Ireland to parents John LALLY, a stonemason, and
Mary SMITH. Little is known of the family. Lough Rea has been
home to the Lally clan for centuries.
On 14 April 1856, Catherine's mother
Mary deposited money with the NSW Immigration Board to secure her
daughter’s passage to Australia. Catherine sailed to Sydney
aboard the “Mary Ann”, arriving on 19 Mar 1857.
Immigration records show the following entry: “name: Catherine
Lally, age: 18, calling: house servant, native place: Galway,
religion: Roman Catholic, read or write: no”.
At the time of her
marriage in 1861, Catherine was working as a servant in Prince Street,
The Rocks. After Marinus’ death in 1887, she moved to 455 Young
Street, Annandale, where she died on 30 November 1902 at Annandale,
NSW, aged 63, from acute exhaustion and enteritis. She was buried on 1
December 1902 at Rockwood Cemetery (Church of England), NSW.
