1ST GENERATION IN AUSTRALIA:
Marinus Solomon GAAL

Marinus Solomon GAAL was born on 4 March, 1834 at Arnhem, The Netherlands, the fifth child of Salomon Marinus GAAL and Elisabeth Catharina TROULJA.

In the 1850s he travelled to Semarang, Indonesia (formerly a Dutch colony) with his brother Pieter Cornelius GAAL and sister Anna Maria GAAL. Sometime before 1861 he arrived in Sydney where he worked for the remainder of his life as a mariner and boatman for the Marine Board Department. He also qualified as a third class engineer with the Marine Board just before he died in 1887.

Marinus married Catherine LALL(E)Y on 28 October 1861 at St Mary’s Cathedral (Roman Catholic), Sydney, NSW. At the time of his marriage, Marinus was living in Windmill Street at The Rocks. The family lived at 17 Pottinger Street, The Rocks for a number of years before settling in Alma Street, Darlington/Redfern from at least 1874.

Marinus died on 23 December 1887 at Sydney Hospital, NSW, aged 56, after spending three weeks in hospital with congestion of the lungs.. He was buried on 25 December 1887 at Rockwood Cemetery (Church of England), NSW.

On 14 April 1856, Catherine's mother Mary deposited money with the NSW Immigration Board to secure her daughter’s passage to Australia. Catherine sailed to Sydney aboard the “Mary Ann”, arriving on 19 Mar 1857. Immigration records show the following entry: “name: Catherine Lally, age: 18, calling: house servant, native place: Galway, religion: Roman Catholic, read or write: no”.

At the time of her marriage in 1861, Catherine was working as a servant in Prince Street, The Rocks. After Marinus’ death in 1887, she moved to 455 Young Street, Annandale, where she died on 30 November 1902 at Annandale, NSW, aged 63, from acute exhaustion and enteritis.
