It is with a sense of pride that Horowhenua Library Trust launched its new Koha library management system late last week, the public face of which is the new website: www.library.org.nz.
Koha is an open source library management system originally developed
by Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand in 1999. The Trust would like to acknowledge and thank the many libraries and developers from around the world who have contributed to Koha 3.2.The new site is built on the Koha 3.2 Alpha2 release and the work was
led by Chris Cormack from Catalyst
IT. The site features the work of Wendy
Hodder, renowned children’s book illustrator and muralist. The site
development was carried out by the team at Katipo Communications and incorporates digital content from a Library Trust Kete,
an open source digital library application developed by Walter McGinnis
at Katipo for the Library Trust.
Library software co Ex Libris buys European distributor
The deal is worth about $3-4 million and will enable Ex Libris to add a Scandinavian branch to its operations.

Jerusalem-based
library automation software developer Ex Libris Group has acquired the
library division of Fujitsu Services, which serves as the company's
distributor in northern Europe. The deal is worth about $3-4 million
and will enable Ex Libris to add a Scandinavian branch to its
operations. The company already has 10 other branches worldwide.
This is an additional acquisition for Ex Libris, which in 2007 acquired
Endeavor for $30-40 million. The library software company itself was
sold to Leeds Equity Partners in 2008 for $170 million.
Ex-Libris said that it has 200 libraries that are customers in Scandinavia.

OCLC opent kantoor in Beijing om bibliotheken in Azië beter
te bedienen

OCLC heeft een kantoor in Beijing geopend om beter tegemoet te
komen aan de groeiende informatiebehoeften van bibliotheken en andere
culturele erfgoedinstellingen in China en andere delen van Azië.
OCLC opende het kantoor in Beijing officieel tijdens een ceremonie
op 20 juli met meer dan 150 directieleden van bibliotheken en andere
instellingen in China. Ook OCLC collega’s uit Japan, Korea,
Taiwan en Thailand waren bij de ceremonie aanwezig. Het OCLC kantoor
is gevestigd in Zhong Guan Cun, het academische centrum van Beijing,
vaak genoemd “de Silicon Valley van China.” Qiu Dongjiang
managet het kantoor in Beijing met drie andere OCLC medewerkers.

In het afgelopen jaar hebben een aantal bibliotheeksoftware leveranciers
gratis versies beschikbaar gesteld. De meeste zijn gratis versies
gebonden aan de betreffende leverancier. In andere branches zien
we steeds meer software die v.h. tot deze categorie behoorde als
Open Source beschikbaar worden gesteld. In de bibliotheek- en informatie
branche is nu ook een pakket dat deze stap gemaakt heeft: Objecttheek.WEB.
Objecttheek.WEB is een asp toepassing van Cybertheek en is nu beschikbaar
als Open Source Software, onder de GPL licentie voorwaarden. Objecttheek.WEB
draait op elke machine die ASP.NET ondersteund
Omdat de broncode beschikbaar is kunnen systeemontwikkelaars zelf
de webapllicatie uitbreiden en wijzigen naar de behoefte van de
eigen organisatie.
Een ander Cybertheek nieuwtje is dat in Objecttheek2003 Freeware
het aantal te beheren onjecten verhoogd is van 500 naar 1000.

In het afgelopen jaar hebben een aantal bibliotheeksoftware leveranciers
gratis versies beschikbaar gesteld.
De meeste versies hebben enige beperkingen die voor kleine tot middelgrote
bibliotheken en voor stand-alone gebruik geen probleem hoeft te
zijn.
Deze groep leveranciers is nu uitgebreid met Mandarin Library Automation
met Mandarin M3.
Het programma is na registratie gratis te downloaden.
De gratis Mandarin M3 versie 1.6 is een volledig functionele versieprogramma
met 32-Bits Client/Server Architecture, Windows® OPAC, Circulatiemodule
inclusief rapportage, catalogisering, groeps editor, inventarislijst
en een configuratie editor, maar mist enkele specialistische modules
en je hebt geen recht op ondersteuning en updates. Dat recht is
voorbehouden aan afnemers van de SUA (Service & Update Agreement)
dat beschikbaar is voor $575 per site. Daarnaast zijn nog een aantal
losse modules te koop. De interface is meertalig in Engels, Frans,
Duits, Spaans en Italiaans. Een Nederlandse taalversie is niet beschikbaar.

Golden Gate Capital heeft de overname van Geac op 14 maart 2006
succelvol afgerond.
De divisie Bibliotheken, onderdeel van de groep Industry Specific
Applications (ISA) gaat verder onder de vlag van Extensity-holding.
Geac was in Nederland en België bekend van VubisSmart. Ontwikkeling
en ondersteuning gaan gewoon verder. Over het voornemen om de Divisie
Bibliotheken een eigen identiteit te geven wordt u hier geïnformeerd,
zodra daar meer over bekend is.
