Rhagio are yellowish, sometimes darkened, flies with long, slender legs. They tend to sit on leaves in moist vegetation. Their larvae dwell in the ground.

Preferred environment: alpine meadows above and below the tree limit. Adult habitat and habits: on the bare ground, rocks and short vegetation. Flight period: summer. Range: Alps. Identification: Szilady (1932). Dark species with uniformly darkened wings (in the female less so).

Range: Central Europe. Identification: Van der Goot (1985). Large Rhagio with long, yellow legs (almost Cranefly like).

13.b. Head: palpi on mouth parts yellow; smaller species: 7-12 mm. Male: sternite 1 haired. -> Rhagio vitripennis

14.a. Scutellum blackish; femora all dark with yellow tip. Male: sternite 1 with long hairs. 10-13 mm. -> Rhagio notatus

Preferred environment: moist woodlands near streams. Identification: Van der Goot (1985).

14.b. Scutellum yellow; femora 2 and 3 blackish on basal half, brownish on tip half, femur 1 browned on middle. 7.5 mm. -> Rhagio subpilosus
