During the autumn 2000 we stayed on Tenerife, one of Spains Canary Islands. We visited Teide volcano and its top Pico del Teide at 3715m. The cable car brings you from 2400 m all the way to the top. The stay at the top is excellent although it was cold and a bit hard to breath which is probably caused by the rapid ascent. This stato volcano has not erupted since 1909, when a flank eruption occurred on the north western slope (volcan Chinyero), but is still a threat to the population of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Especially a partial collapse of the flank could be hazardous. Indications are that this has happened before and could easily happen again.
