Enthusia Professional Racing

For The PlayStation 2
"Enthusia Life" Mode Only

Contents

Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Controller configuration of steering allows analog stick only (no D-pad steering).
  • When switching to a different car, the Week counter advances and a different set of events will be available. Although I understand that this is necessary because the available events depend on your chosen car, it's just a bit annoying that you can't choose a car for the current Week's races.
  • With the exception of Silhouetted Prize Cars, all other prize cars are awarded using a flawed raffle that doesn't always unlock a car. This would normally be considered a serious bug that needs urgent fixing, but the "No Cars Unlocked" message makes it clear that the developers intended it to work this way. The way the Silhouetted Prize Cars are awarded shows that they knew how to do it the right way but chose not to. In my opinion, this kind of unfairness has no place in a racing game, and the developers should've known that it's unacceptable to deny a prize when a prize is due. This notion of a "no prize" prize is so out of place here, it seems to suggest that the developers had gambling on their minds when they came up with it. For a game that has "Professional" in its name, this is anything but.
  • Eligibility for 4 of the 6 Race Grades depends on your current Rank which will fluctuate depending on your 12 most recent race results. A fluctuating Rank means you won't always be eligible for the same event groups; you can gain eligibility if you move up the ranks, but you can also lose eligibility if your rank drops. For eligibility in most other racing games, you only need to obtain a license or reach a certain level once and only once. The way EPR's point system is implemented, you're basically forced to maintain a high Rank if you want to remain eligible for the higher-level events. The Ranking system can also be a bit confusing because a lower number means a higher Rank and a higher number means a lower Rank. A message like "You cannot enter RI when your ranking number is below 300" seems to suggest the opposite of what it actually means. In my opinion, this Ranking system is another one of those things that seems out of place in a simulation style racing game.
The Good
  • Includes a comprehensive in-game tutorial that automatically starts up when "New Game" is chosen at the beginning of an Enthusia Life mode session.
  • If a car is available in multiple colors, you can choose the color via your Garage, and you can change it as often as you like. In some other racing games, you'll sometimes need to win the same car multiple times to have it in a color that you like.
  • The race screen includes an onscreen mirror (no need to press a button for rearview), and there are brake / accelerator gauges for checking the proper working of pedals or buttons.
  • Automatically loads an existing gamesave on startup, but includes manual Load if you want to switch to a different gamesave later. Also includes manual Save which gives you pretty much full control over when your game progress is saved.
General Impression
  • There are various elements in the game that seem to suggest that EPR was written as a hobby project meant to test new ideas rather than as a commercial product meant to make money. The raffle implementation is just one example; it's hard to imagine that the developers wouldn't have known that a "no prize" prize would be extremely unpopular and cost them some potential fans (which ultimately results in lost profits).
  • EPR seems to be meant for people who are bored with "normal" racing games and want something different. For longtime fans of other simulation-style racing games, the unconventional features (e.g., the ranking system and car raffle) will probably take some getting used to.

The Cars

Car Lists

This section includes 3 subsections:
Starter Cars, Unlockable Road Cars, and Unlockable Competition Cars. All 211 of EPR's cars can be found in the table of one subsection or another. For each table, the Se column shows the car's Segment (Co=Compact, Cp=Competition, Me=MediumSaloon/Estate, Mu=Multipurpose, Pr=PremiumSaloon/Estate, Re=Realsports, Sp=Specialty, Sr=Sporty). The Dr,A column shows the Drivetrain and Aspiration (N=Natural, T=Turbo, S=Supercharger). G is the number of gears (e.g., '4' means a 4-speed gearbox), Cc is engine displacement in Cubic Centimeters, Bhp is Brake Horse Power, Kg is weight in Kilograms, and PWR is the Power-to-Weight Ratio.

Starter Cars. These are the cars that are initially available when starting a new gamesave. For the RN/R4 Events, pretty much any of these will do.

Unlockable Competition Cars. The table below shows the 20 R-class cars grouped according to which of the 3 Series Events they're restricted to. As far as I know, these cars can only be unlocked in R1, RS, and/or SE events, as shown in the Acquire column. For cars that can be unlocked in R1 or RS, see Silhouetted Prize Cars for the specific event.

Silhouetted Prize Cars

The table below shows the cars that can show up as a silhouette on the Race Info screen of certain events. Unlike other prize cars, silhouetted cars are unlocked using a non-flawed raffle that won't cheat you out of a car if one is due. For the Cars column, the letter in parentheses is the car's Class. For the Events column, the text that begins each line is the event's
race grade. Note that the listed One-Make Race Events are only a very small selection of the One-Makes that can unlock the same prize car. In most cases, a One-Make in R4 will unlock the Eunos, a One-Make in R3 will unlock the Civic, and so forth; the known exceptions are listed under Miscellaneous. For a list of possible races, see the Events section.

Track List

The table below shows the tracks that are used in various
events in Enthusia Life mode. The Ab column shows the abbreviation used in other sections of this webpage. Tracks marked with an asterisk (*) are initially available when a New Game is started. DD is the approximate amount of Skill Points that a lap in a race is worth. For the Versions column, the 1st letter of multi-letter items is the direction (N=Normal, R=Reverse), while the 2nd/3rd letter is the condition (N=Night, W=Wet). The RGrd column shows the Race Grades that the track can show up in.

Event Lists

This section includes 4 subsections:
RN/R4 Events, R3/R2/R1 Events, RS Events, and Series Events. For the table in each subsection, the Events column shows the possible events that can show up for the Race Grade shown in the column header. Note that there is a difference between eligibility for an event and the availability of events; in general, eligibility depends on your current Rank, while availability additionally depends on the current car. The Races column shows the possible tracks that can show up for the listed event. The number in parentheses is the number of laps, which may be appended with one or more letters which have the following meaning: r=Reverse, n=Night, w=Wet. The direction (normal or reverse) and conditions (night and/or wet) are mostly random and the actual race may have any combination of those attributes. As an example: "TC(4|5rnw)" means that the race held on the Tsukuba Circuit is 4 or 5 laps, possibly in reverse, in possible night and/or wet conditions.

RN/R4 Events. The RN race grade is where you start your career in Enthusia Life mode. There will usually be 4 events available, all of which are named Novice Challenge. Eligibility for the R4 race grade is easily achieved and, once you've become eligible, you'll remain eligible (i.e., a fluctuating Rank won't affect your eligibility).

R3/R2/R1 Events. Eligibility for these race grade events depends on your current rank. All of these also require you to be in a Starter Car or other Road Car (i.e., non-R-class car). For each of these race grades that you're currently eligible for, there will usually be 6 events per race grade to choose from; the exception is in R1 if you're also eligible for the current Week's RS event.

RS Events. The table below shows the 48 RS events, each of which is only available 1 Week per EPR Year. Note that the RS calendar can also be viewed in-game via Records > Calendar, which also shows various other bits of info and stats. Eligibility for an RS event depends on a certain rank and an eligible car (note the restrictions for Months 02, 04, 06, 08, and 10). If you're eligible for the current Week's RS event, the RS event will replace the first (leftmost) R1 event, giving you 1 RS event and only 5 R1 events (instead of the usual 6). For a list of the R-class cars that can be unlocked in Months 04, 06, and 08, see Silhouetted Prize Cars.

Series Events. Although the Series events are part of the R1 race grade, they're listed separately here because of their restrictive nature. These events are special in that each one allows only a very limited set of Competition Cars, and each of those cars is limited to a single Series. If you're currently in an Audi R8 Team Goh, for example, there will only be 4 or 5 races available, and the rival cars will include only other cars that are also restricted to the Race Car Series. In the case of the Audi R8 (and most of the other cars in the Race Cars group), a fifth race will only be available if you're currently eligible for RS (Top 50 Rank) and you're currently in Month 10. Similarly, if you're in a Rally car, a fifth race will be available if you're currently in Month 02.

Gameplay

Getting Started

This section describes the basic steps of getting started in Enthusia Life mode.
  1. On first-time startup (or when starting the game with a memory card that doesn't already have an EPR gamesave on it), the program starts by asking you to select a language.
  2. You're then presented with a screen that can be used as a guide for adjusting your TV's brightness and contrast.
  3. You're then presented with a screen that allows you to select the settings for the Driving Assist feature. If you're not already very familiar with the game, I'd recommend choosing the "TCS ESC" setting.
  4. The program will then play an intro video which you can either watch or skip. For the latter, you can press [X] to exit the video.
  5. You're then presented with the screen asking you to press the [START] button which then takes you to the game's Main Menu. When starting a new gamesave, it's usually a good idea to set your preferences fairly early on, and you can do so now by using wraparound to go to the Option item at the bottom of the menu. Once you've set your preferences, you can choose Save from the Option menu.
  6. Press [Square] to return to the Main Menu, then use wraparound to choose Enthusia Life. The program then explains various aspects of the game and walks you through the process of choosing a Starter Car. The only one that I wouldn't really recommend is the eK Wagon, but any of the others should do just fine.
  7. Initially, the Enthusia Life menu will only have the Join Race and Garage items enabled. Selecting Join Race for the first time starts a tutorial that explains the various parts of a Choose Event screen. Pressing [X] on an event on the Choose Event screen starts another tutorial that explains the various parts of a Race Info screen which includes the 5 rival cars and the points awarded for a 4th or better race finish. Pressing [X] on a rival car shows that car's spec sheet, while pressing [X] on your car followed by [X] on Join takes you to the Confirm Race Start screen. At any time before you get to the Confirm Race Start screen, you can press [Square] to go back to the previous screen. If you're already on the Confirm Race Start screen and you decide not to start the race, you can press the game controller's [START] button and then choose the Return To Title item to quit the race without advancing the Week counter or affecting Ranking stats.
  8. At this stage, you're pretty much free to choose what you want to do next. You're currently only eligible for the 4 events in the RN race grade but, after 5 races (or earlier if you win any), you'll be eligible for 6 additional events. If you want to learn/practice a track or test your car's setup before doing an actual event, you can do so via Garage > Test Run. As mentioned in the in-game tutorial, a Test Run won't advance the Week counter (which might be important if you want the current events and grid lineups to stay the same). If you want to revisit a tutorial, you can press [Triangle] on any screen where the Help feature is supported.

Car Collecting

Although most fans of racing games will probably want to collect all cars as part of normal gameplay, EPR includes various elements that seem to suggest that the developers thought otherwise. The ranking system, odds, and especially the flawed raffle system seem to suggest that the developers thought that a player's main goal would be to reach the #1 rank, and that everything else (including car collecting) would be secondary. Although that may be true for some players, it's probably not true for most. This section includes various notes that may be useful if your goal is to unlock all 211 cars in Enthusia Life mode. The topics include
Lower-Level Cars, Higher-Level Cars, and R-Class Cars.

• Preliminary Notes. This subsection includes a few notes that may be useful if you're new to car collecting in EPR. These notes include tracking your progress, learning the tracks, and dealing with the flawed raffle implementation.
Tracking Your Progress. For efficient car collecting, it's important to have a way of keeping track of what's unlocked and/or what's not. If you don't already have a way of tracking your progress, here are a few suggestions:
If you don't need to end up with a permanent list of cars, you can Copy & Paste all of the Road Cars and Race Cars to a plain text file, one car per line, and then delete the lines of cars you've already unlocked, or
If you do want to end up with a more permanent list, you can Copy & Paste the list of Road and Race cars to a spreadsheet data file, then Bold the whole list, and then un-Bold the cars you've already unlocked, or
Copy & Paste the list of Road and Race cars to a spreadsheet data file, one car per row, then add a column where you can mark the unlocked cars with an 'X' or other character.
Alternatively, if you don't need to keep track of specific cars, you can also just check your Garage every now and then. If you do a Search on Class, you can get an idea of what you're still missing by checking the number of cars in each Class and comparing it to what should be unlocked. The Classes of a complete collection will have the following number of cars: F=4, E=43, D=48, C=47, B=22, A=27, R=20.
Learning The Tracks. Efficient car collecting also depends on a good knowledge of the tracks. In the early stages, you can go quite a long way just by knowing the 4 Novice Challenge tracks (RC, AH, MS, MC). The 2 tracks that are probably the most useful to know are Rev City (for easy Skill Points) and Marco Strada (for easy wins). Other tracks can be learned as needed. The most common ways to learn the tracks are:
By doing races and following the rival cars. Note that this advances the Week Counter and affects your current statistics (Rankings, etc).
By doing practice sessions in Garage > Test Run. In most cases, this will be the preferred method since it allows you to do as many laps as you like without the distraction of other cars and without advancing the Week Counter. Note that, since the first 6 tracks in Test Run aren't used in any race grade events, you can go straight to the RN tracks by pressing the game controller's [R2] button. If you want to use Test Run to practice for a particular race, be sure to check the direction and conditions beforehand.
Dealing With The Big Flaw. If your interest is mainly in car collecting and not so much in racing, it's important to be able to tolerate a certain amount of unfairness in the form of a flawed raffle system that doesn't always unlock a car. As far as I know, there is no sure way to completely avoid the occasional "no prize" prize. But, luckily, EPR doesn't use AutoSave, so you do have the option of using the manual Load/Save features to play it safe if you want to. Here are examples of when playing it safe might be useful:
If you have multiple choices that you want to try before deciding on one (e.g., if you're trying to decide on a different car to Change to, or if you're trying to decide which event to do).
In the later stages of car collecting, if you come across an easy event that has a single unlockable and it's an A-class or other rarely-seen car, you can Save the game and, if the raffle cheats you out of the car, you can reLoad and redo the race since it's easy enough to not be a problem.
For longer R1/RS races, you can Save the game in cases where you're not sure if a race is worth doing. If it looks like a lost cause early in the race, you can Retire and reLoad without affecting the stats (i.e., without the risk of losing eligibility for a currently-unlocked race grade).

• Lower-Level Cars. The lower-level cars are the F, E, D, and C-class cars. In the early stages of car collecting, a good number of Road Cars can be unlocked by using any Starter Car to keep doing RN Events. At this stage, it doesn't really make sense to strive for a higher Rank to unlock higher-level events, since most Road cars will show up in RN at one time or another. Also, EPR's flawed raffle system will occasionally cheat you out of a car, regardless of whether you've achieved good results in a long hard race or short easy one. For those reasons, it just makes more sense to go the easy route, for now. If you're fairly new to EPR and you don't yet know all of the tracks, you can start with the easiest (rightmost) RN events (press D-pad [Left] after entering Join Race). If you do already know all of the tracks, you can start with the leftmost RN events (press [L2] after entering Join Race). The more lower-level cars you unlock early on, the fewer lower-level unlockables there will be later, which is good because it means that lower-level cars are less likely to be candidates in the raffles of later events where they might interfere with unlocking higher-level cars. It should be possible to unlock 120+ cars before it gets to the point where there are no more unlockables in any of the RN events. If you run out of unlockables before then, you can choose to either check R4/R3 events or you can try switching to another E-class car. If you want to avoid having to look for F/E/D-class unlockables in the final stages of car collecting, you can put the priority on unlocking all of them before moving on to higher-level cars (i.e., while you're still using an E-class car). Note that, in general, F-class cars will only show up in the rightmost RN/R4 events and rarely (if ever) in leftmost events.

• Higher-Level Cars. The higher-level cars referred to here, are the B and A-class cars; note that there is a separate subsection for R-Class Cars. For collecting B and A-class cars, there are at least 2 basic strategies that can be used:
Strategy 1: Use an E-class car to unlock all of the higher race grades and then use a C, B, or A-class car to check for unlockables. Advantage: Leads to being better prepared for RS events. Disadvantage: Some planning is needed to keep higher race grades available.
Strategy 2: Switch to a B or A-class car and keep doing RN/R4 events. Advantage: Easier, less time-consuming. Disadvantage: Need to switch back to an E-class car to unlock R1/RS race grades at a later stage.
Strategy 1 is probably the more common strategy since gameplay in EPR seems to revolve around the whole ranking system and reaching the #1 spot. For car collecting, having the higher-level race grades available means that there are more events that can be checked for higher-level unlockables. Before switching to a C, B, or A-class car, I'd recommend striving for a rank in at least the Top 50 (4370+ Ranking points) because, when you switch to a better car, your Ranking points (and possibly the availability of events) are likely to decrease, and a sufficient amount of points means you can afford to do an occasional lower-level event (if you come across a higher-level unlockable there) with less risk of a race grade becoming unavailable. Being eligible for all race grades means you have the option of also collecting R-class cars while you're collecting higher-level cars. If you want to combine the two, you can switch to a C, B, or A-class car that can also be used for RS events. For RS eligibility, it's important to keep an eye on your Ranking Points to make sure you stay in the Top 50.
Strategy 2 is a good alternative for anyone who is more interested in collecting cars than in the racing itself. This is basically a continuation of the strategy used for unlocking the lower-level cars; the main difference is that you'll be using a different car. If you've done only RN events using a single Starter Car so far, there will probably be very few B and A-class cars currently in your collection and, if you did mainly the rightmost RN events, the highest unlocked race grade will probably be R3. The advantage of having only a few race grades to search for unlockables, is that it saves you some time and puts less wear on the game disc. Note that, although you're more likely to see higher-level unlockables if you're using a higher-level car, you can also start with a D or C-class car and then switch to a B or A-class car later.
For either strategy, assuming you haven't already unlocked all 191 Road cars, if you encounter a Week where there are no unlockables in any of the available events, you have at least 2 options. After
saving the game to play it safe, you can either:
Do a race using your current car. If you need points to keep events unlocked, do the event that pays the most or, if you don't need points, do the easiest/quickest RN event. Or,
Switch to a different car. In general, higher-level cars will cause more higher-level unlockables to show up in the lineups of events. However, the higher the level of car you use, the harder it'll be to maintain a higher rank for event availability. If you're not sure which car to switch to, see Useful Cars for suggestions.
For either option, the hope is that an unlockable will show up in one of the next Week's events. If the next batch of events doesn't have any unlockables, you can reLoad and try a different event or car than the one previously chosen. In the final stages of car collecting, unlocking the remaining Road cars is basically a matter of using a similar car and checking the events where the missing car is likely to show up.

• R-Class Cars. Due to the restrictions of Series Events, your first R-class car will need to be one from the Silhouetted Prize Cars table which includes 2 cars that can be unlocked in R1 events and 12 cars that can be unlocked in RS events. The 2 cars that can be unlocked in R1 events are shown below with the second column showing where they can be unlocked:
Audi R8 2003Honda NSX Type R or Nissan Skyline GT-R Nur One-Make Race
BMW 3.0 CSLGood Old Touring Car Race using a BMW M3 Sport Evolution
The 12 cars that can be unlocked in RS Events require a certain amount of planning since each RS event is only available once every 48 Weeks. For collecting R-class cars, the important Months are 04, 06, and 08, and you can start with whichever Month you're currently ready for. You could, for example, start with the events of Month 08 (4WD) and then do the events of Months 04 and 06 when they come around again in the next Year. Preparation for an RS event involves having enough Ranking points to stay in the Top 50 (required for eligibility), and switching to a suitable car at least a Week before the event becomes available. Keep in mind that the rival cars in RS events will generally be more brutal than in most other events, so a competitive car is more important here. If you plan to use a less-competitive car, it's probably a good idea to switch to the car early enough to have it sufficiently upgraded by the time the RS events become available. As the table of Unlockable Competition Cars shows, there are 3 groups of R-class cars: Cross, Race, and Rally. The table also shows that many of the cars can be unlocked in more than one way. The examples below show 2 different ways of unlocking all of the R-class cars, depending on whether your preference is on RS Events (Example 1) or Series Events (Example 2). The pros and cons to consider are:
Events:Advantage:Disadvantage:
RSCan be done using Road cars.Requires you to maintain a Top 50 Rank.
SEOnly requires a Top 300 Rank.R-class cars required, flawed raffle used.
Note that Example 2 assumes that you've already unlocked the Audi R8 Team Goh 2003 in either the R1 Honda NSX Type R or Nissan Skyline GT-R V Spec II Nur One-Make Race. Also note that, since the BMW 3.0 CSL won't be useful for collecting any other R-class cars, it doesn't really matter whether you do the R1 Good Old Touring Car Race before or after unlocking other R-class cars. If you're not sure which car to use for any of the events in these examples, see Useful Cars for suggestions.
Example 1 (RS) :
1.Use your preferred RWD, FWD, and 4WD cars to unlock the 12 cars that can be unlocked in the RS Events of Months 04 (RWD), 06 (FWD), and 08 (4WD).
2.Use your preferred Race and Rally cars to unlock the 4 Race cars and 2 Rally cars that can only be unlocked in Series Events.
Example 2 (SE) :
1.Use your preferred RWD or FWD car to do either the 04/01 or 06/01 RS Event, and then use the unlocked car to unlock the other Cross-Country car.
2.Use your preferred 4WD car to do these 2 RS Events: Week 08/01 (for the M1 Procar which can't be unlocked anywhere else) and Week 08/03 (for the Evo Rally car).
3.Use the Audi R8 Team Goh 2003 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII Rally Car to unlock the other Race and Rally cars.

Gameflow Examples

The examples in this section were taken from a few of my more recent gamesaves where the main goal was to
unlock all 211 cars in Enthusia Life mode. For each of the examples, the text following the car name is in the format "YY/MM/WW - N1.N2.N3.N4", where YY/MM/WW is the date that the Nn stats were taken on, N1 is Rank, N2 is RankingPoints, N3 is Skill, and N4 is EnthuPoints.

Gameflow Example 1. This first example shows the gameflow for a gamesave where higher-level cars were unlocked using Strategy 1.

Gameflow Example 3. The example below is from a gamesave where the goal was to unlock all cars using as few cars as possible while also advancing the Week counter as little as possible. The latter required playing it safe for almost every race, which isn't recommended for normal gameplay. The goal of the Mustang was 3-fold: unlock more lower-level cars, unlock higher-level events, and do the R1 Good Old Touring Car Race. The next 3 cars (the Civic, Impreza, and Elise) were primarily chosen to do the RS events but were also useful for collecting some remaining Road cars. The last 2 cars (the Lancer and McLaren) were used to unlock the remaining Rally and Race cars.
