Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • In Career mode, there's no choice of cars to use in races (you're forced to use a specific car).
  • No qualifying and the AI drivers near the back of the grid are extremely irritating.
  • No onscreen mirror (have to press a button for rearview).
  • Long load/save times and short races often make you feel like you're spending more time waiting than racing.
  • Maximum length of a Quick Race is 9 laps and there is no other mode for longer races.
  • In Career mode, once you move on to the next season, there's no way to go back to the races of previous seasons.
  • Once assigned, Skill Points can't be re-assigned; it would've been nice to be able to 'mix&match' the points to suit a particular car on a particular track.
  • The incorporation of negative Skill values (and the whole Skill system in general) tends to complicate things; car tuning (as opposed to driver tuning) would've made things easier to comprehend.
  • The 4 'secret' cars are road versions (a bit disappointing since you'd normally expect to see these cars in full race trim).
  • For 100% completion, you need to pass all of the Challenges, and some of them are ridiculously irritating.
  • No 'true' race cars (the race cars in this sim are souped-up road cars and they don't handle much better than the other road cars in this sim).
The Good
  • Works with the Logitech Driving Force steering wheel.
  • Includes intro/tutorial by Gabriele Tarquini (ex-Formula One driver, currently in touring cars) with an option to skip it if you've already seen it.
  • The Challenges give you an opportunity to increase your Base Skills without having to use Skill Points.
  • Ability to save up to 5 driver profiles per memory card.

Challenges

Challenge mode gives you the opportunity to increase your Base Skills without having to use up some of those hard-earned Skill Points. This is proably a good place to start, especially if you've chosen the 'All Rounder' class. Don't spend too much time in this mode though; some of the challenges will be unbeatable until you apply more skills through Skill Points and/or Gear.

Skills / Driver Tuning

As in
SCAR, there is no car tuning in Evolution GT. Instead, you 'tune' your driver in various ways: The 9 Skills are listed below:

AnticipationIncreases Tiger Effect regeneration rate.
Brake TimingImproves Driver's ability to brake effectively.
ConcentrationIncreases Driver Condition regeneration rate.
ConfidenceIncreases the base amount of Driver Condition.
CunningImproves the ability to overtake opponents after drafting.
HindsightIncreases the base amount of Tiger Effect.
IntimidationIncreases the rate of intimidation inflicted on opponent.
Steer PrecisionImproves overall vehicle handling.
Throttle ControlImproves Driver's ability to accelerate.

The Talent Menu

When you create a new driver profile, you'll be presented with a 'Talent' menu where you can choose a class with various initial Base Skills. Note that, unlike in SCAR, some Skill values may be negative.

Talent ClassBase Skills

Skill Points

When you start a new driver profile, you're initially given 2 free Skill Points and you'll earn another 78 more during the course of your career. Assigning Skill Points is one way to 'tune' your driver. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:
Gear

Changing your Gear is another way to 'tune' your driver. Each article of Gear has its own set of skills associated with it. Note, again, that some values may be negative.
