GRID 2

For The PlayStation 3
Offline Only

Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Load times seem longer than in Grid1, even though some program data is stored on the PS3's harddisk. The general impression is that the program spends a lot of time loading things unnecessarily.
  • Almost all cars tend to oversteer more than they should, giving the impression that the developers chose a physics engine that's more suitable for games than for simulations.
  • Its linear nature gives Grid2 less replay value than any other title in the Grid series. When a new Stage is unlocked, the events of the previous Stage are removed from Career mode, leaving only a limited set of events to choose from each time. The events of previous Stages do eventually become available in Timeline mode but, since there are no rewards, there's less incentive to do them.
The Good
  • The options in Main Menu > Options & Extras > Difficulty can be set to suit players of various skill levels.
  • Includes an option to turn off car damage.
  • The program doesn't automatically start a Replay that needs to be exited explicitly.

Career Mode

In Grid 2, a Career lasts for 5 Seasons done in 8 Stages. The events of a Season can be grouped into Club events (CE), Vehicle Challenges (VC), Promos (Pr), and WSR events. At any given Stage, there will be a limited number of events available. In the 2nd and 4th columns of the table below, the amounts shown are the maximum that can be available at that Stage. Note that Seasons 1-3 consist of 2 Stages each, while Seasons 4-5 consist of only a single Stage each. The 3rd and 5th columns show what's required to unlock the next Stage, which can be the WSR events, the Season Final (SF), or the next Season (Sn). As an example: "60,000 > SF > S2" means that 60,000 fp unlocks the Season Final and completing the Season Final unlocks Season 2.

 Season 1 : 6 CE, 1 VC, 1 Pr 14,000 > WSR 4 WSR, 2 VC, 1 Pr 60,000 > SF > S2
 Season 2 : 12 CE, 5 VC, 2 Pr 250,000 > WSR 5 WSR, 6 VC, 2 Pr 550,000 > SF > S3
 Season 3 : 12 CE, 6 VC, 3 Pr 1,250,000 > WSR 6 WSR, 13 VC, 3 Pr 3,900,000 > SF > S4
 Seasons 4+5 : 9 WSR, 23 VC, 4 Pr 11,000,000 > SF > S5 9 WSR, 30 VC, 4 Pr 22,500,000 > SF

As in any level-based game, there has to be some kind of point system that determines which level you're at. Grid1 uses Reputation Points (RP) and Grid3 uses eXperience Points (XP). In Grid2, you progress through the game by earning Fan Points (FP). The amount of FP earned in an event depends on the achievement and the Stage in which it's achieved, as shown in the table below. Again, note that there are 2 Stages in Seasons 1-3 and only 1 Stage in Seasons 4-5. Also note that, unlike in Grid1 and Grid3, the Difficulty setting won't affect the amount of FP that's awarded.

 End Of Season 16,750 78,000 1,025,000 3,050,000 5,800,000

While all Club events and Promos are single races, WSR events are usually either multi-race or multi-stage events. For multi-race events, the championship points awarded for placing in a race are shown below.

  1st:  20   2nd:  16   3rd:  14   4th:  12   5th:  10   6th:  8   7th:  6   8th:  5   9th:  4   10th:  3   11th:  2   12th:  1

The list below shows the various types of events in the game.

CheckpointPass as many checkpoints as you can before the timer runs out
DriftSlide your car sideways around corners
EliminatorStay out of last place at the end of a number of countdowns
EnduranceDrive as far as you can in the time limit (5-7 minutes)
FaceoffOne-on-one race to reach the finish line first; in 3 stages
 LiveroutesRace on dynamically-changing circuits
OvertakePass as much event traffic as you can in the given time
RaceCross the finish line ahead of your opponents
TougeOne-on-one racing on mountain roads; in 2 stages

Events List

As mentioned earler, Career mode is divided into 8 Stages (Seasons 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4, and 5), as shown in the table below. The table is further divided into separate sections for the various event groups (note that Clubs, Promos, and WSR events are covered here, but
Test Drive and Vehicle Challenges are not). The leftmost column header shows the Stage and event group, while the rightmost column header shows the amount of FP required to unlock that Stage and/or the amount of FP awarded for winning an event in that event group. Note that, for multi-race and multi-stage events, the reward shown is for the whole event (i.e., not for each individual race or stage).

The info in the table below is presented in various ways depending on the event group that's being covered. For Clubs, the first column shows the name of the club, while the second column shows the available events of that club (with the track and/or duration in parentheses). For Promos, the first column shows the name of the event, while the second column shows the track (with the duration and/or promoter-supplied car in parentheses). For WSR Events, the first column shows the name of the event, while the second column shows either a list of tracks preceded by race numbers (for multi-race events) or the name of a single track preceded by a bullet (for multi-stage events). For all events, the eligible classes of cars are listed after the dash (-).

Test Drive

Career mode includes a feature called Test Drive that allows you to try out the cars you've acquired so far. A Test Drive session consists of what's known as a Power Lap, which is basically a 1-lap time trial. The track used for this Power Lap is the Indianapolis Sport circuit, and the lap begins from a standing start. Although you can also test cars in
Custom Event, the advantage of Test Drive is that the fastest lap times are persistent across game sessions, making it much easier to compare your cars without having to keep track of lap times manually. Note that Test Drive will only be available as long as Career mode is still available. Therefore, if you want Test Drive to remain available, you'll need to leave the Season 5 Final undone, since its completion means that the game is pretty much over.

Vehicle Challenges

Whenever you're awarded a prize car, you'll have 2 to choose from. The car you choose will be added to your collection, while the other car will become available to win via a Vehicle Challenge. Note that some cars will only be available via Vehicle Challenges; in the second column of the table below, if only 1 car is listed, it means that the car is never offered as a prize. Note that a Vehicle Challenge itself won't award any FP but some
Sponsors award FP for satisfying the "Win a Vehicle Challenge" objective. Also note that any undone Vehicle Challenges will carry over to the next Stage of Career mode, where cars are added in LIFO (Last In, First Out) stack order. This means that, unlike other events of a Stage, the undone Vehicle Challenges will still be available when the next Stage is unlocked, making it unnecessary to put a high priority on acquiring cars that you didn't choose as prizes. In fact, if you skip all Vehicle Challenges, you can unlock all of those cars in one go by winning the Season 5 Final; although, thereafter, the cars will only be usable in Timeline mode, since Career will no longer be available.

Gameplay

Getting Started
  1. If you're running the game disc for the first time, the program will need to install program data to the PS3's harddisk; this will take about 10 minutes.
  2. When the program starts up, if you're running the original Grid2 v1.00, you'll be presented with a screen which includes some info about the VIP Pass with the following menu just below it:
      • Redeem Code  • Go To PlayStation Store  • 48Hr Online Play Trial  • Purchase Later
You can exit the above menu by pressing [Circle]. The Grid2 main menu consists of the following 2 items:
      • World Series Racing  • Grid Online
  3. Entering World Series Racing for the first time takes you straight into a 2-lap race on the Chicago Riverside course. Once the countdown starts (or shortly after it ends), press [START] to pause the game, and then choose "Options" to set your preferences. Resume the race when you're done. Note that it doesn't matter how well you do here; your audience will be impressed by any kind of finish.
  4. You'll then be shown an intro video, after which, you're taken to the Indianapolis Infield track where you're given the opportunity to hone your driving skills with the assistance of your race engineer. If you want to skip this practice run, you can press [START] and then choose "End Session" at any time.
  5. You'll then be shown another video, after which you'll be presented with the "New Driver Sign-Up" screens where you can enter some player details such as your name, age, nationality and, afterwards, the audio name that you'd like the AI characters to call you.
  6. The program will then try to connect to the Internet. Depending on which message you get, either press [Circle] or press [X] to continue without going online. You're then given the opportunity to set the Difficulty and Damage levels. If you're not a longtime fan of other titles from Codemasters, I'd recommend setting the Difficulty to Easy or Very Easy. You'll then get another message saying "You're not signed in" which you can ignore by pressing [X].
  7. At this point, you should see the Events screen showing 6 event groups, with only the leftmost one currently available. Press [X] to display the invites from the New Union club. Then, press [X] again to do the California Race. You'll need to complete this race in the top 3 to unlock the other 2 invites. The reward for a podium finish is a new car, and you'll have 2 to choose from. You'll then get the opportunity to choose 3 sponsors. You can see what your car looks like with the sponsors applied by moving the right stick on the PS3 game controller. Once you've chosen your sponsors, you can select "Done" and then press [X]. Next, you're given the opportunity to change the look of your cars. Again, you can use the right stick to view the car from different angles.
  8. Choose Events > Career to return to the Events screen where you'll find that the Trans America Pacers club is now available. Complete the Chicago Faceoff in the top 3 to unlock the other 2 club events. Doing so will also unlock the first Vehicle Challenge plus the first Promo race, giving you a total of 6 undone events to choose from.

Example Walkthrough

There are a few ways to play through Grid 2, and this is just one example. This walkthrough assumes that you've already gone through all of the preliminary stuff described in
Getting Started. For the tables in this section, the first column shows the events to do, while the second shows the recommended cars to use (if you don't have a preference). The abbreviations used in the first column are: CE (Club Event), SF (Season Final), Pr (Promo), VC (Vehicle Challenge), and WSR (WSR event).
  1. At this very early stage, there should already be 2 events done (1 in each Club). You'll need 14,000 fp before moving on to the next Step, and the quickest way to reach that amount is probably by doing the events below:
CE: New Union: Chicago Race (Marina City, 4 laps)
CE: New Union: Miami Race (Art Deco Loop, 3 laps)
     Nissan Fairlady
Winning both of the above events will unlock the the first WSR. Note that, once you enter the WSR, most of the current events will no longer be available in Career mode. Vehicle Challenges will carry over to the next stage, but Club events and Promos won't. Note, however, that it isn't strictly necessary to do all of the available events; in fact, the most efficient way to play through the game is to do only enough of the high-paying events to unlock the next Stage and leave most of the low-paying events undone.
  2. For the choice of rewards, choose the Chevrolet Camaro Z28. For the Sponsor line-up, choose the following objectives:
      • Finish ahead of Harrison Carter in the Evo Race Series  • Win a Race event
