Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • No permanent onscreen mirror, and the V-shaped pointers are a poor substitute. You can press a button for a full-screen rear view, but you lose sight of the front view. This just isn't very practical for close racing.
  • The MiniMap has a transparent background (should be opaque), making the lines invisible at times.
  • AI drivers will often do things that aren't legal in real-life.
  • Pole position is often on the wrong side of the track (the dirty side, opposite the ideal line).
  • The Touring discipline uses rubberbanding. This is annoying because it means that the gap is never more than a certain amount. It also means that the fastest lap will often go to whichever random car gets the most out of the rubberband effect.
  • Includes 2 too many Levels. The last Championship requires Level 8 and the last GRID series requires Level 9, so the maximum Level should've been Level 10 instead of 12. Having an award for reaching Level 12 seems like a cheap way to extend gameplay, especially since it takes such a huge amount of repetition to reach that Level.
The Good
  • Controller button assignments can be reconfigured.
  • Includes formula and prototype racing.
  • The options in Main Menu > Options & Extras > Difficulty can be set to suit players of various skill levels.
  • Endurance races end when the time runs out, so there's no time wasted on finishing the last lap.

The Cars

Car List

For the Events column, Xn (LetterNumber) refers to an
event or event group in Career Mode. Note that all cars are also available in Custom Cup. For the Liveries column, braces ({}) indicate that the livery is only available in Custom Cup.

Team Offers

The Career mode in GRID Autosport works a bit differently than in most other racing sims. Rather than choose the cars, you choose the
teams that supply the cars. Your choice of teams is limited to the number of available team offers, and the availability of team offers is governed by various rules or conditions. Note that the team offers for the GRID Series follow a different set of rules/conditions than the Championships do. Whether you're doing a Championship or GRID Series, a team contract lasts for the duration of only one season (i.e., choosing a team is an integral part of starting each championship season).

This section uses various terms that may need some explanation. In the text below, Team1 (written in italic) refers to the first/leftmost team listed on the "Team Offer Select" page, Team2 refers to the second team listed, and so on. The state of the listed teams can be described as "floating" or "frozen". A team in the "floating" state is subject to change from Season to Season, and this change will generally be unpredictable. A team in the "frozen" state is basically locked in place and won't change except under a certain specific condition which you have control over. When referring to event groups, the term "newly-available" refers to a group where none of its 3 championships have yet been done, even if the group has been available for several seasons.

For each unlocked Championship, the "Team Offer Select" page will have 2-3 team offers to choose from:
  1. [Team1] Offer  2. [Team2] Offer  3. Ravenwest Offer
• All unlocked championships will have at least Team1 and Team2 to choose from, and these can be any participating team except Ravenwest.
• Once you've won a championship, Ravenwest will be available for that championship. Ravenwest essentially becomes Team3 and will remain available for that championship from that season onwards.
• In any particular Season, Team1 will be the same in all 3 championships of the same event group (e.g., if Team1 is Razer for the A1 championship, it will also be Razer for A2 and A3).
• In any newly-available event group, both Team1 and Team2 will be in the "floating" state (i.e., subject to change from season to season).
• The team offers in a newly-available event group will likely be from the 2 lowest-ranked teams for that group. For example, the initial team offers for Season 1 will typically look something like this:
  A123: 1. Oakley, 2. Razer     B123: 1. Razer, 2. Oakley     C123: 1. Razer, 2. Intel     D123: 1. Oakley, 2. Razer     E123: 1. Oakley, 2. Kicker
• Once you've done any one of the 3 championships of an event group (regardless of the final result), Team1 will be in the "frozen" state. A "frozen" Team1 is always the most recent team you drove for, in that event group. This basically means that you can "freeze" a "floating" Team1 or Team2 simply by driving for them, thus ensuring that the team will be available in the next season.
• Driving for Team2 causes this season's Team2 to be next season's Team1, and next season's Team2 will generally depend on the final results of this season; the new Team2 can be a better team, a "lesser" team, or remain unchanged.
• Driving for Ravenwest won't cause Team1 to change (since Ravenwest is always Team3 when available), but may cause Team2 to change (since Team2 is never "frozen" like Team1 might be).

For each unlocked GRID Series, the "Team Offer Select" page will have 1-7 team offers to choose from:
  1. Razer Offer     2. [Team2] Offer    3. [Team3] Offer    4. [Team4] Offer    5. [Team5] Offer    6. [Team6] Offer    N. Ravenwest Offer
• All 3 of the GRID series will have at least Razer to choose from, regardless of whether or not you've previously driven for them in any championships.
• The Team2-Team6 teams of a GRID series depend on the "frozen" Team1 teams of its corresponding event group:
    G1 series: X123 group     G2 series: X456 group     G3 series: X789 group
Any event group's "frozen" Team1 that's a participating team for the corresponding GRID series will be available for that GRID series.
• Ravenwest will be available if you've completed a championship with them, regardless of which championship (any will do) and regardless of the final results of that championship. Choosing Ravenwest for the B1 championship, for example, and then quitting out of both races will be enough to make them available for all 3 of the GRID series. Once Ravenwest becomes available, they'll be the last (rightmost) team in every GRID series.
• There are exactly 8 participating teams per GRID series:
G1: Forge, Intel, Kicker, LiquiMoly, Monster, Oakley, Ravenwest, Razer (all except Cusco, K&N)
G2: Forge, Intel, Kicker, LiquiMoly, Monster, Oakley, Ravenwest, Razer (all except Cusco, K&N)
G3: Cusco, Forge, K&N, Kicker, Monster, Oakley, Ravenwest, Razer (all except Intel, LiquiMoly)
• The maximum number of available team offers for a GRID series is 7 and, as far as I know, it isn't possible to get an offer from all 8 of the participating teams in the same season. You have pretty much complete control over Team2-Team6, but no control over Team1 (Razer) and very little control over TeamN (Ravenwest).

Team Rankings

The table below shows the approximate team rankings in the various
event groups. When a new event group becomes available, the very first team offers will likely be from the 2 lowest-ranked teams. As you progress through the game, you'll eventually get offers from higher-ranked teams; winning with Razer in the A123 group, for example, will likely get you an offer from Cusco, Forge, or LiquiMoly for the next Season. Other than Ravenwest, the rankings of most of the other teams tend to be a bit inconsistent; Intel, for example, ranks near the top (at #2) in the E123 group but ranks at the bottom (at #8) in the C123 group. My guess is that the differences in rankings are probably due to the cars used, the level of tuning allowed, and the skills of the AI drivers.

Event Groups

GRID Autosport features 5 Disciplines. Each Discipline consists of 3 Groups, and each Group consists of 3
Championships. On this webpage, Groups are expressed in the "Xnnn" form, where X can be A, B, C, D, or E. For example: "C456" refers to the second group in Open Wheel (i.e., Formula B).

Event List

In the table below, the first column shows various bits of info. The amount of XP shown is basically just a rough guide; the actual amount that you'll earn in a championship can vary greatly, depending on various factors such as Team Targets, Sponsor Objectives, race results, and Difficulty settings. The time shown is the approximate time it takes to complete the championship with only 1 qualifying lap per event. For championships that use more than one class of cars, the classes will be shown with the events in parentheses.

For the Races column, 'C' (instead of a number) means that the race is a Cup race. Note that Cup races won't actually count towards
championship points, but will count for Career > Awards. The number in parentheses is the number of laps, unless it's followed by 'm' meaning minutes. A 'T' preceding the number means that the event is a TimeAttack, while 'D' means that it's a Drift event. "N+N" denotes a 2-stage event. For the Cups column, each entry includes 3 bits of info separated by commas: (1) the name of the Cup, (2) the track where the race is held, and (3) the car that's used.

GRID Series

GRID Series 1 (Grand Slam) is unlocked when you reach Level 3 in all 5 of the Disciplines. Series 2 (Masters Trophy) is unlocked by reaching Level 6 in all 5 Disciplines and winning Series 1. Series 3 (Legends) is unlocked by reaching Level 9 in all 5 Disciplines and winning Series 2.

The GRID series are a bit different than the other championships in that they feature events of different Disciplines. In the table below, the Discipline is shown just after the event number; A=Touring, B=Endurance, C=OpenWheel, D=Tuner, and E=Street. For each Series, you'll have 1-7 teams to choose from, and their cars will depend on which GRID series you're doing. In general, Series 1 uses
cars from the X123 group, Series 2 uses cars from the X456 group, and Series 3 uses cars from the X789 group; the exception is G3.1 (the first event in Series 3), which uses a Cat B car from the A456 group rather than a Cat A car from the A789 group.

Gameplay

The Main Menu

The table below shows an overview of the Main Menu and its submenus. When starting a new gamesave, it's usually a good idea to set your preferences fairly early on, and this can be done in Main Menu > Options & Extras. The most important items are probably: Driver Details, Options, and Difficulty.

Main Menu :    Career   |   Online   |   Custom Cup   |   Time Trial   |   Splitscreen   |   Options & Extras   |   PlayStation Store
Main Menu > Career :    Resume Season   |   Start New Season   |   Awards   |   Career Progress
Career > Start New Season :    Touring   |   Endurance   |   Open Wheel   |   Tuner   |   Street   |   GRID Series
Main Menu > Custom Cup :    Cup Settings
Main Menu > Time Trial :    Discipline Select
  Main Menu > Options & Extras :    Driver Details   |   Statistics   |   RaceNet   |   Options   |   Difficulty   |   Legal   |   Credits
Options & Extras > Driver Details :    Edit   |   Save   |   New Driver   |   Reset Career Progress   |   Reset Online Progress
Driver Details > Edit :    Forename   |   Surname   |   Age   |   Nationality   |   Audio Name
Options & Extras > Options :    Controls   |   Vibration or Force Feedback   |   Gameplay   |   Audio   |   Gamma
Options > Controls :    Advanced Options   |   Choose Preset   |   [Controller Button Assignments]
Controls > Advanced Options :    Steering...   |   Throttle...   |   Brake...   |   Interior Steering Wheel   |   Multiturn
      Options > Gameplay :    Units   |   Dial   |   Minimap   |   Counters   |   Position Info   |   Camera Shake
      Options > Audio :    System EQ   |   Range   |   Speech   |   Music   |   Replay   |   Effects   |   Vehicles   |   Surfaces

If you're using a Logitech Driving Force GT or similar steering wheel, some of the Controller Button Assignments in Options > Controls will be Unassigned: Look Left/Right/Up/Down, and Team Orders Aggressive/Defensive. Be sure to set those before doing any serious racing.

Difficulty Settings

By default, the Difficulty is set to Medium, but this can be customized to suit various skill levels. Setting the first item (Difficulty Level) automatically sets the defaults for that Difficulty Level, as shown in the table below. All of the various options except the disabled ones (those marked in -italic-) can be changed. The percentage in parentheses is the Difficulty Bonus.

Note that, in Career mode, most options will affect the amount of XP you'll earn; the effect is shown in-game near the right side of the screen. In general, it's a good idea to set options that'll earn you a fair amount of XP without sacrificing playability. As an example: with the default Medium Level as the starting point, the settings that I normally use are: Damage Level: VisualOnly, AI Difficulty: VeryEasy, and Flashbacks: 0.

Career Mode

Selecting Career for the first time takes you straight into a 2-lap race at the Hockenheimring GP course using a Ravenwest Audi RS 5; this is basically just to give you an idea of what to expect in this mode. If you've already spent some time in Custom Cup (i.e., if you're already familiar with the driving physics), you can press [START] and then choose "End Session". You'll then be given the opportunity to enter your driver details; if you've already done this in Main Menu > Options & Extras > Driver Details, you can skip this step by choosing "Continue" (scroll up 1 to wraparound to the bottom). The next step is to choose an audio name. The program will then try to connect to the PlayStation Network; press [Circle], then choose "Continue" to skip the PSN connection. You'll then be given the opportunity to set your
Difficulty Settings; if you've already done this in Main Menu > Options & Extras > Difficulty, you can skip this step by choosing "Apply Settings". After those preliminary steps, you're pretty much free to proceed in any way you want.

Here's a summary of the basic program flow when you choose Career Hub > Start New Season:
 1. Discipline Select         Choose a discipline: Touring, Endurance, Open Wheel, Tuner, or Street.
 2. Championship SelectChoose a championship. Starting out at Level 1, you have 2 championships in each Discipline to choose from, giving you a total choice of 10 championships straight from the start.
 3. Team Offer SelectChoose a team. The main page shows the Teams, Car Setup Capability, Team Target, and Team Bonus. Pressing [X] on a team brings you to the Contract Details page where you can press [L1]/[R1] to toggle between the Season Details, Sponsor Objectives, and Teammate info. Pressing [X] on the Contract Details page starts a new championship season with the chosen team.

The number of available championships depends on your current Level in the chosen Discipline, and your current Level depends on the amount of XP (eXperience Points) that you've earned so far:
Level 2Level 3Level 4Level 5Level 6Level 7Level 8Level 9Level 10Level 11Level 12

The table below shows the experience points (XP) awarded for various achievements in an event. Note that this is meant as a general guide, and that the actual amount awarded will depend on various factors besides the final results. For example: some of the Touring and OpenWheel events (Annn and Cnnn) consist of 2 races, and not all Tuner events (Dnnn) will have Qualifying.

Custom Cup

Custom Cup is basically like the Arcade mode found in other racing sims. All cars and all tracks are available, even if you're just starting out (i.e., there's no need to unlock anything). This makes Custom Cup ideal for practice or for just having fun. The table below shows the options that can be found in Main Menu > Custom Cup > Cup Settings.
