Gran Turismo 4 "Prologue"

Contents

Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Limited amount of gameplay compared to other titles in the Gran Turismo series. Basically only includes 2 types of events: School Mode (like license tests) and Arcade Mode (like free races, with only 5 tracks available).
  • The Race menu in Arcade Mode includes an item to show a "Best Lap" list, but the list is always empty. This appears to be either a bug in the code that displays the list, or the developers forgot to remove the code for the menu item after scrapping the code for the feature.
  • There are 5 prize cars that require all Gold trophies for the Lessons in School Mode. For most players, those last 5 cars will be pretty much impossible to unlock without using cheats.
The Good
  • AutoSave is optional and can be turned off to spare some wear on memory cards.
  • Automatically loads an existing gamesave on startup, but there is also a manual Load if you want to switch to a different gamesave later.

The Cars

Car List

The table below shows the 64 cars in GT4P. The Unlock column shows the
School Mode event that unlocks the car for availability in Arcade Mode. The text in the Group column can be used to find out which opponents the car will face if selected.

School Mode

The table below shows all of the Lessons (Lnn) and Coffee Breaks (CBn) in the 5 Sections of School Mode. These are basically like the license tests in other titles of the Gran Turismo series. The Gold and Bronze columns show the goal times. Note that Bronze is sufficient to unlock the Car and next Lesson. "-'--.---" means that any valid finish will do, regardless of the time. For all of the Sections except Purple, the Ideal Racing Line can be toggled on/off by pressing [R3].

Arcade Mode

This is basically like the Quick Race mode found in other racing games. This mode is purely just for fun; there are no cars or other rewards to unlock here. And, as far as I can tell, there is nothing in Arcade Mode that affects any kind of statistics; there is a "Best Lap" item in the Race menu, but it always shows a blank list.

The main menu in Arcade Mode includes 3 items: Start, Options, and Exit. Choosing the Start item brings you to the screen where you can choose one of the 5 available tracks:
Tsukuba CircuitNew YorkGrand CanyonFuji SpeedwayCitta di Aria
The next screen allows you to choose a car. The list of choices will include the 13 cars that are initially available plus any cars you've unlocked in
School Mode. Note that not all of the listed cars will be selectable for the Grand Canyon track.
240ZG '71Odyssey L Type(J) '03Silvia K's Aero (S14) '96more...
Once you've chosen a car and color, the next screen shows a very limited set of car setup options. Note that not all Tyre Types will be selectable for every car.
Transmission (AT/MT)Driving Aids (On/Off)Tyre Type (Road/Sports/Normal/Racing)
The car setup screen also includes a "Start" item that takes you to the Race Menu from which you can start the race.

With the default settings, a race will be 2 laps with no opponents, which gives you something similar to a Time Trial. However, since Time Trials aren't very useful if the game doesn't keep track of lap records, you'll probably want to change some settings at some point. The Global Options screen includes 5 tabs:
Screen SettingsArcade Mode SettingsSave SettingsController SettingsSteering Controller Settings
The tab of interest is the Arcade Mode Settings tab which includes the following options:
Background Music for Replay
(On/Off)
Traction Control System
(On/Off)
Opponent Cars for TC, FS NY
(On/Off)
Opponent Car Difficulty
(Easy/Hard/Pro)
Turning the Opponent Cars option On will give you races with the usual number of opponents (for a field of up to 6 cars) for 3 of the 5 tracks. Note that there are no opponents for the Grand Canyon and Citta di Aria tracks, and there are 2 cars that will only ever have 1 opponent, if any. As well as setting the AI's skill level, the Opponent Car Difficulty option also determines the number of laps: 2 for Easy, 3 for Hard, and 5 laps for Pro.

The cars in the grid lineup will depend on your chosen car and track. The Group column of the Car List shows which group a car belongs to, and the table below shows the possible opponents for that group. Note that this only applies if Tsukuba, New York, or Fuji is chosen, since there are no opponents for Grand Canyon or Citta di Aria. Also note that many of the cars listed here will only show up as opponents and won't be available to unlock for player use.

Gameplay

Getting Started

This section describes the basic steps of starting a new gamesave.
  1. On startup, the game will look for a GT4P gamesave on the memory card in slot 1 and, if there is none, will start up with a screen that allows you to choose your preferred language.
  2. You'll then be asked if you want to create game data. Answer "Yes" on this screen and on the screen that asks for confirmation to save to the MC in slot 1.
  3. The next screen will ask if you want to enable the Auto-save feature. If you want to be sparing with your memory card, you can answer "No" here. However, if you're used to having things done automatically and you have trouble remembering to Save before shutting down, you can answer "Yes" instead. The program will then show an intro video.
  4. The next screen shows the main menu which includes School Mode, Arcade Mode, Save Game, Load Game, Options, Replay Theatre, and Credits. When starting a new gamesave, it's usually a good idea to start by choosing Options to set your preferences. For the Arcade Mode Settings, I'd recommend turning on Opponent Cars and setting the Opponent Car Difficulty to Hard.
  5. As mentioned earlier, there are basically only 2 types of events to choose from. If you want to try some of the cars and tracks, you can start in Arcade Mode where there are initially 13 cars to choose from. If you'd rather get straight into GT4P's main gameplay mode, you can start in School Mode. You can, of course, switch back and forth between the 2 modes whenever you want.
