1. When the program starts up, it automatically plays a demo (if you want to skip it, you can press [X]). After pressing [START] on the title screen, you'll be presented with the Main Menu which includes the items below; these are listed vertically in-game:

   Replay Stock

   Time Attack

   Save/Load

   Riding Spirits

   Quick Race

   Battle

   Options

   The Riding Spirits item takes you into what is basically the career mode, while Quick Race is basically like the arcade mode found in other racing games. But, before going any further, I'd recommend choosing the Options item to set your preferences. At the very least, I'd recommend setting Control to Arcade. I usually also turn off Vibration, BGM, and Replay Effect.
2. Assuming you're not yet familiar with the bikes and tracks in this game, I recommend trying a few races in Quick Race to get an idea of what the racing will be like when you enter Riding Spirits mode. You can check the Events section to see which tracks might be worth trying before moving on to the next step.
3. The first time you enter Riding Spirits mode, you'll need to choose a starter bike before you can go any further. The table below shows your choices. If you don't have a preference, I'd recommend the blue RGV-r250SP '96 (this is to avoid duplicates, since you'll win a red one later).

4. Once you've chosen a bike and gear, you'll be presented with the Riding Spirits Menu which includes the following items shown horizontally near the bottom of the screen:

   In addition to a free bike, you're also given an initial Pt.100,000. For an easier go of it, you can go to Shop > Parts > Engine System and buy a 4-1 muffler; this will use up all of your points but gives you an instant power boost.
5. Go to Race > Class C > Beginner and then do the Welcome race (Oval Course). The muffler upgrade gives you a fairly easy win here. Once you've won your first race, further gameplay will basically be a matter of learning tracks and winning races. At some point, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the Garage Menu which includes the following items listed vertically in-game:

   Save/Load

   Choosing the Bike item takes you to a list of the bikes you currently own. While viewing the list, you can press [L1]/[R1] to scroll up/down a page, and you can press [L2]/[R2] to sort the list by Manufacturer, Order, Displacement, or Model Year. Pressing [X] on a bike allows you to view the bike and gives you various options, including:

   Setting

   Parts Replacement

   Change

   Sell

   You can also press [L1] to view the bike's spec sheet.
6. It's important to keep in mind that the tracks in this game are a bit quirky and will probably take quite a bit of time and patience to get used to. If you want to practice a track, there are a few game modes where you can do so:

   • Garage > Test Run > Free Run

   • Main Menu > Quick Race

   • Main Menu > Battle > Duel

   Note that, when learning a track, it's often useful to study the Replay after a race. While viewing a Replay, you can press [Up]/[Down] to select a different rider, and you can press [SELECT] to toggle the camera view. The ability to use Replays to study driving lines makes them ideal for learning tracks and honing your skills. Note that, although Free Run doesn't include a Replay option, it does allow you to tune a bike and there is no limit on the length of a session. Alternatively, if none of the above game modes appeals to you, you could just do the races in Riding Spirits Race mode and learn the tracks as you go along. In any case, once you've found a method of learning that works for you, further gameplay should be a bit easier. The remaining steps of this "Getting Started" section describe one way of proceeding from here. Note that this is basically just an example of how to get some use out of a few of the bikes you'll acquire early on. For another example, see Restarting.
7. For the gameflow tables below, the first column shows the bike to use (with how it's acquired in parentheses), the second column shows the upgrade level, and the third column shows the races to do. Note that, if the first column doesn't include text in parentheses, it means that the bike is an already-owned previously-used bike rather than a newly-acquired or unused one. For the rightmost columns, a double dash (--) denotes a change in upgrade level. For the third column, an appended 'r' denotes a recurring event; this will either mean that the race is one where multiple bikes can be won, or that the race is a "money-maker".
8. This first step is basically to get some use out of your starter bike. Note that, although C3 will be available after winning C1 and C2, we'll leave that series for the next step. The important race in this step is B23 which awards a GSX400 Impulse that can be used to acquire 4 other useful bikes; in this case, by winning B12 4 times.

9. In this step, we'll finish off Class C and do a few races that we already have bikes for. Note that using the bonus version of the RGV-r250SP means you don't need to uninstall the muffler that the starter bike is fitted with.

   Once you've won all of the above, you're pretty much done with this "Getting Started" section. The Further Gameplay section shows one example of how to proceed from here.

• Accessing Upgrades. Access to the various aspects of tuning are shown below:

• Permanent Upgrades. There are 2 upgrades that, once bought, can't be uninstalled. Both of these can be found in the Engine section of the Parts Shop, and buying either of them will make it impossible to restore a bike to its original state (worth keeping in mind since some bikes can only be acquired once).

  Bore Up	Displacement is increased by boring the insides of the cylinders to give them more volume.
  Port Reworking	The engine's revving power is improved by polishing the intake/exhaust ports.

• Sprocket/Setting Kit. This upgrade allows you to set the Final gear on the Setting > Gear Ratio page to give you faster acceleration or higher top speed. Although you can buy a fully customizable gearbox to set each gear individually, in general, a Sprocket/Setting Kit will suffice. Increasing the value in the Final setting gives you faster acceleration, while decreasing the value gives you a higher top speed. You can use [L1]/[R1] to decrease/increase by 10 or [L2]/[R2] to decrease/increase by 100. In various other places on this webpage where tuning is mentioned, you may come across an upgrade level followed by text in parentheses. The table below is meant to explain what it means when the text starts with 'F' followed by a number.

• Upgrade Levels. The table below includes some suggestions for various levels of upgrading. Note that each level builds on top of all of the lower levels (e.g., Semi-Full also includes the Light and Semi-Light upgrades). Note that the upgrades for Maximum are permanent and should probably be avoided for bikes that can only be acquired once (i.e., bikes that can't be bought from the Shop).

  In some cases, it might be better to put a higher priority on either handling or power upgrades. For example, high-powered bikes may benefit from handling upgrades, while low-powered bikes may benefit from power upgrades. The table below shows a few suggestions with the upgrades listed in the order that are probably the most cost-effective. For upgrades after the bullet (•), see the notes below the table.

  • The Racing Suspension and Frame Reinforcement upgrades can improve the handling around corners, but they're probably not worth the high cost unless they're for a bike that can easily earn it back.
  • As mentioned earlier, the Bore Up and Port Reworking upgrades are permanent and should probably be avoided unless they're for a bike that can easily be replaced (i.e., one that's available at the Bike Shop).
• Weight Reduction. The table below shows the stages of weight reduction that can be bought. Note that, if you want to use a bike for night races, you'll need to set its Weight to Stage 2 or less before entering the race. Also note that other upgrades (e.g., mufflers and wheels) can also contribute to reducing a bike's weight.

1. At this stage, most of the undone events that are currently unlocked will require spending more points than previously required. The original goal in this step was to finish the One-Makes (B3) but, since the bikes required for those races are of limited use, and because it'll cost more to win those races than they'll earn back, the new goal is to do some other races to earn some more points. Note that the priority is on completing B5; this is so that you'll have 2 bikes to choose from (YZF-R6 or GSX-R600), either of which can be used to win the rest of the races in this step.

2. As mentioned in the previous step, completing the rest of the One-Makes can be quite costly. This is partly due to the upgrades needed to beat the AI bikes, which are also upgraded. I should also mention that part of my problem is that I don't know the Rampart track as well as I should. If you do know the track well, it might be possible to win these races with Light or Semi-Light upgrades instead of Semi-Full.

3. At this stage, there are only 2 races left in the Power of Heart series. Although a TZR250SPR with enough upgrades and proper tuning is capable of winning B45, a better option might be to use a stock TL1000S instead. However, before we can buy one, we'll need to unlock the rest of the Shop bikes (750cc and higher) by winning either A14 or A15 which, in turn, won't be available until A12 has been won.

4. With Class B done, the goal now is to complete Class A. This step may require doing a "money maker" every now and then, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem at this stage; to be able to afford the ZX-12R, I did B53, but there are others to choose from.

5. At this stage, all that's left is to complete Class S, and there are several ways to do this. Although the logical way forward would be to start with S11 and end with S57, this step takes a slightly different approach. The general idea here is to do the harder stuff first for an easier go of it later. Note that the ZX-12R is capable of winning S3, but its weight makes the Up Hills a bit of a pain. A GSX-R1000 would be a good choice for S3 but, since it's the bonus for winning this event, the YZF-R1 seemed like a good alternative.

1. The main goal in this first step is to make some progress without spending much on new bikes or upgrades. This step also makes 2 new groups of bikes available at the Shop, the important one being the group that includes the 600cc bikes needed in the next step.

   C1+C2 unlocks C3, C33 unlocks B5, B23 unlocks B12+B3 + makes 400cc available at Shop. B12 unlocks B13+B4. B12+B31 makes 750cc available at Shop.
2. While the previous step focuses mainly on earning points without spending much, this step focuses on unlocking events so that there's a wide selection of choices open. This step also makes all of the remaining previously-hidden manufacturer bikes available at the Shop.

• Action Replay Notes. These notes may be useful if you want to play through Riding Spirits using the Action Replay cheat system (sold separately). Note that any active cheat will remain active across Save/Load operations. For example, if you Load a gamesave with the "Pots Of Cash" cheat active, and you then Save the game, the new gamesave will have Pt.99,999,999 regardless of whether it originally had Pt.100,000 or Pt.250,000,000; in the latter case, you actually lose about Pt.150,000,000 by using the cheat. To deactivate a cheat, you'll need to reset the PS2 and restart the game.
  • Cash Codes. The "Pots Of Cash" cheat fills the bank with Pt.99,999,999 and keeps it at that amount as long as the cheat is active. This might be useful for starting a new gamesave since it allows you to spend as much as you like on bikes and upgrades. On the flip side, it also prevents you from earning any more than Pt.99,999,999 while the cheat is active. Also worth keeping in mind is that, once you've used an AR Cash Code, there is no known way to zero out the last 2 digits, which will always be 99; this might be important if you're collecting gear and you haven't yet acquired the Daijiro Special Suit Set, which requires the last 5 digits to be 74,000. The "Never More Than ... Cash" cheats put a limit on the maximum points that the bank can hold, making them pretty much useless (as far as I can tell).
  • All ... Riding Complete. The 2 available cheats are Safety and Circuit, and they can be used to acquire the 3 bonus bikes awarded for mastering the Riding Spirits Training challenges. Note that, for each cheat, you'll need to enter and exit a challenge (any will do) before the bonus bike is awarded. If both cheats are active, for example, you'll need to enter and exit 1 challenge in Safety Riding and 1 challenge in Circuit Riding. If you want to acquire the bonus bikes in a certain order:
    1. In Action Replay, set (activate) both cheats,
    2. In Riding Spirits, go to Training without entering Garage,
    3. Enter and exit any Safety Riding challenge to acquire 10 suits plus Yamaha XJR1300SP,
    4. Enter and exit any Circuit Riding challenge to acquire 10 suits plus Honda CBR600F Sport VR Special,
    5. Exit Training mode and then go to your Garage to acquire the Suzuki RGV-r.
    Of the 3 bonus bikes, the RGV-r is probably the most useful since it's capable of winning any race that it's eligible for. The bike is a 500cc racer, but it's eligible for any 600cc sports race that doesn't require headlights. The gameflow table below shows an example of how to get some early use out of the bike.

    There are more later-stage races that the RGV-r can be used for, but unlocking them will require using other bikes, some of which may require spending lots of points.
  Besides the cheats above, Action Replay also gives you the ability to use third-party gamesaves. If you're running an EU/PAL version, for example, you could download the 33-Bike QuickStart and start with that.
• Bike Info Pages. There are, as far as I know, only 2 places where bike info can be found:

  Note that, although the main purpose of the Race Information page is to show a bike's eligibility, it's also useful for finding info that isn't available on the bike's spec sheet. If you wanted to know a bike's production year, for example, the only way to find out (as far as I know) is to select that bike, go to a race, and then check the Race Info page.
• Daijiro Special Suit Set. As shown in the Non-Bike Bonuses section, the Daijiro Special Suit Set is awarded when the current amount in the bank has 74,000 as the last 5 digits. There are basically 2 ways to achieve that goal, as shown below. Note that, for either method, the important part of the result (VarToSpend or VarToEarn) will be the last 5 digits.

  1. Buy Items	Calculate: [AmountInBank] - 74,000 = [VarToSpend]
  2. Sell Items	Calculate: [Var74K] - [AmountInBank] = [VarToEarn]

  • Buying is probably the easiest, since it's fairly easy to calculate what you need to spend, and it's fairly easy to find something that costs a sufficient amount. As an example, if AmountInBank is 10,000,000, VarToSpend will be 9,926,000. In this case, you could simply look for something that has 26,000 as the last 5 digits of its price. Searching this webpage for "26,000" shows that the Suzuki GSX-R400R fits the bill. So, buying that bike for Pt.626,000 is one option; the remaining amount in the bank will then be Pt.9,374,000. Note, however, that it's also possible to split the 26,000 over multiple items. So, another opton is to buy 2 sets of headlights for Pt.13,000 each; the remaining amount in the bank would then be Pt.9,974,000.
  • Selling is much more difficult, since selling items will usually yield something other than 000 as the last 3 digits. For the calculation, Var74K depends on whether the last 5 digits of AmountInBank is more than or less than 74,000. If the last 5 digits of AmountInBank is more than 74,000, you'd add 1 to the 6th-from-right digit (e.g., 10,078,000 becomes 10,178,000). Regardless of whether the last 5 digits of AmountInBank is more or less than 74,000, you'd replace those digits with 74,000 to calculate VarToEarn. As an example, if AmountInBank is 10,078,000, Var74K would be 10,174,000. The calculation would then be 10,174,000 - 10,078,000 = 96,000. The total earnings from sales would therefore need to have 96,000 as the last 5 digits.
  • A combination of the above is also possible and, in some cases, may even be necessary. If the last 3 digits of AmountInBank is anything other than 000, it's probably best to zero it out before going for the 74 part of the Pt.n74,000. If you currently have Pt.1,000,200, for example, you could buy and sell a Shoei helmet to end up with Pt.968,000 (1,000,200-46,000=954,200 and 954,200+13,800=968,000).
• Duplicate Bonus Bikes. If you've won all of the bonus bikes that can be won in all of the events listed in the Acquire column of the table below, your Garage will have an exact duplicate of the bikes listed in the first column. If you're looking to streamline your bike collection, these are the bikes you'll probably want to sell first.

  If you decide to sell a duplicate, it's probably a good idea to check and double-check that it really is a duplicate that you're selling. Remember that events will only award a specific bike in a specific color once and only once.
• Game Statistics. There are, as far as I know, a total of 212 models of bikes in this game. If you were to count all bikes in all available colors, the total would be 444. Of that 444 total, 106 can be won as bonus bikes (31 in Duel mode, 60 in Race mode plus 9 extras after completing Class S, 3 in Training mode, and 3 in TimeAttack mode). Of the 106 bonus bikes, 31 are also available at the Shop while 75 are bonus-only bikes (i.e., bikes that can be won but not bought).
  The total number of medals that can be won is 304. Of that 304 total, 80 medals can be won in Race mode, 160 medals can be won in Training mode (80 in Safety Riding and 80 in Circuit Riding), and 64 medals can be won in Time Attack mode.
• Gear Shifting. Even if you're using an automatic gearbox, you can still use the [L2]/[R2] buttons to manually shift up/down. Manual shifting might be useful in the following cases:
  • For high-powered bikes that suffer from a kind of turbo lag, you can get off to a better start by shifting into 2nd gear during the countdown before the race. Note that this "turbo lag" will generally only be a problem when starting a race, not after a fall. Also, if you're allowed to tune a bike, you can avoid the quirk altogether by using Soft Racing tires.
  • For high-powered bikes that tend to do wheelies when going from 1st to 2nd, you can avoid the wheelies by manually shifting to 2nd gear before the automatic kicks in (i.e., way before you really need to shift).
  • For heavy bikes that don't brake well, you can manually downshift to help slow you down for the next corner. But be careful not to shift all the way down to neutral.
  • For bikes that tend to come out of corners in too high of a gear, you can manually downshift to help improve acceleration.
• Mileage For S+ Bonus. As mentioned in the Class S + section, there is a bonus bike awarded for having a total mileage of 3,000 km after completing Class S. Since it's possible to complete the events of all classes and still end up with less than 1000km, it's likely that another 2000km will be needed to reach that 3000km goal. If you want to reach that goal without having to redo events, one easy way is to use your fastest bike to do laps on the Oval Course in Garage > Test Run > Maximum Speed Test. A lap is about 5km, so 2000km will be about 400 laps. If you set the Accelerator option in Button Settings to [Right Stick Forward], you can use a rubberband to hold the throttle and spare your thumb. The table below shows a few of the best bikes for accumulating mileage. All of these are capable of doing a lap in less than a minute, so 400 laps can be done in about 6-7 hours. • Options. The Options menu can be accessed from either the Main Menu or from a Race Menu. There are 5 pages of options available, as shown in the table below.

  Note that, on the Control Settings page, the default for Control is Simulation but, in my opinion, it should've been Arcade. As far as I can tell, the Control option doesn't seem to have any effect on how bikes handle on track, and the only noticeable difference seems to be in how bikes handle off track. Unless you know the bikes and tracks well enough to be able to stay on track 100% of the time, it doesn't really make much sense to use the Simulation setting.
• Quick Race. This mode is ideal for practice or for casual gameplay. Quick Race starts by asking you to choose a class, difficulty, brakes, laps, bike, and track, as outlined below:

  On the bike selection screen, you can press [Left]/[Right] to choose a bike and [Up]/[Down] to choose a color. At the end of each race, the program automatically goes into Replay mode which can serve as a useful learning tool. While viewing a Replay, you can press [Up]/[Down] to select a different rider, and you can press [SELECT] to toggle the camera view.
• Save/Load. If you plan to spend a substantial amount of points on a new bike or upgrades, it's probably a good idea to Save the game first. That way, you can undo the purchase (by reloading the gamesave) if it turns out to be a bad investment. The Save/Load item is available in the Main Menu and in the Garage Menu.
• Status. The Riding Spirits > Garage > Status page shows some of the statistics that the program keeps track of. Below is a list of some of the things that can affect that data.
  • Starting a race (whether you finish or not) counts for both Total Races and Total Runs.
  • Restarting a race without exiting counts for Total Races but not for Total Runs.
  • Entering a race without starting counts for Total Runs but not for Total Races.
  • Winning a race without collecting points (i.e. restarting instead of exiting) still counts for Victories.
  • Entering a Test Run event without starting still counts for Total Runs.
  • Any mileage accumulated in Quick Race or Test Run counts for Running Distance.
• Visibility. For tracks like Hazy Sunrise and night races, it may help to adjust your TV's brightness, contrast, and color settings to improve visibility. Note, however, that using higher-than-normal settings puts extra wear on your TV and can harm your eyes.
