Riding Spirits

For the PlayStation 2 (PS2)

Contents

Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Steep learning curve. This game requires considerably more time and patience than most other racing games. This game also requires a certain amount of tolerance for things that could be considered unfair.
  • There are a number of issues related to the tracks:
    • The visibility in many of the races is terribly low. In real life, low visibility usually means delayed or canceled races; in Riding Spirits, low visibility seems to be the norm. While real-life tracks are usually designed with safety in mind, it appears that the designers of this game's tracks wanted to hide the death traps to make them even more dangerous.
    • Most of the tracks have an abundance of tricky corners. In real life, tracks might have one or two tricky corners while the rest are normal; in Riding Spirits, tracks might have one or two normal corners while the rest seem to be intentionally designed to deceive.
    • The distance-to-corner markers that are common in most racing games (and in real life) are missing from most of the tracks in Riding Spirits. Also, the entry points to some corners are too similar to others, making it very easy to get confused about which corner you're entering (until it's too late).
    • Going off-track will usually cause an unrealistic slowdown. This is especially annoying because the tracks in this game seem to be intentionally designed to make it very easy to end up off-track. Where real-life tracks will have run-off areas, this game's tracks will have a kind of quick-stop material that's meant to grind your bike to a halt. What's worse is that some of the tracks have areas where there is no clear difference between what's track and what's not.
    • Night racing is more difficult than it should be. Not only are flickering headlights a bit annoying, there's also the annoyance of street lamps being put in questionable places. In real life, lighting is normally put in places where they'll make night racing a bit safer; in Riding Spirits, it's sometimes the opposite (e.g., in some places, it seems as if the lighting is meant to deceive people into thinking that the next turn is in a different place than it actually is).
All of the above seem to suggest that the tracks were deliberately designed to be unrealistically (and unnecessarily) difficult. The tracks in this game are, in my opinion, all very good examples of how not to design tracks.
  • Contact with other bikes (even when it's them side-swiping you) causes an unrealistic slowdown. This is especially annoying because the AI riders are not as intelligent as they should be. The AI seems to be programmed to ignore situations where real-life riders would proceed with caution. And you'd think the AI would be smarter in the higher levels, but no; they're still idiots, but now they're idiots on faster bikes.
  • When other riders are near, their bikes are louder than your own, even when you're all on the same bikes (e.g. in One-Make races). This can be very annoying if you depend on engine sound to help you determine braking points. If you're in traffic and you forget that the sounds you're hearing are from other bikes, it could easily confuse you into thinking that your engine is doing something that it's not.
  • The bike list in your Garage and the spec sheet (accessible via [L1]) are missing 2 bits of important info: (1) the bike's production year, and (2) the spec/version (EU, JP, etc). This will be very annoying if your goal is to collect all bikes since there is no easy way to tell the difference between different bikes that share the same name and spec sheet.
The Good
  • The game's concept is similar to that of Gran Turismo 3. Events will earn you points that can be used to buy new bikes and/or upgrades, and some events will also award bonus bikes (i.e., the game includes features meant to keep people interested).
  • Includes a Parts Shop and tuning options.
  • For people who like a challenge and have lots of time and patience, this game provides good value for money.
General Impression
  • This game appears to be more for fans of road/street racing games who want a real challenge and not so much for fans of simulations of real-life circuit racing. My main gripe is that the tracks tend to deviate too much from what you'd normally see in real life. The amount of unintuitive corners makes me wonder if maybe the developers started out with normal/realistic tracks and then went back and revised the corners that weren't deceptive enough.
  • This game is definitely not for everybody. Although there is some similarity with Gran Turismo 3, it's not as playable. The developers seem to have written this game to appeal to a relatively small group of die-hards, even though it would've been fairly easy to modify the game to appeal to a much larger group. The developers' elite attitude of "for the few, not the many" doesn't really make much sense to me, but the fact that they stayed in business long enough to write Riding Spirits 2 seems to suggest that there are more die-hards out there than I thought.
  • Although there are lots of complaints listed here, it's important to keep in mind that these are just my personal opinions. I should mention that I'm not a huge fan of games that pose too much of a challenge; I'd much rather play racing games that relax rather than ones that get the adrenaline flowing. That said, I do think this game can be enjoyable if the quirky tracks and AI can be overlooked, and if enough time is spent on getting used to those quirks.

The Bikes

Bike List

In the table below, Sp is Spec (CO=Concept, EU=Europe, JP=Japan, NA=NorthAmerica), T is Type (N=Naked, S=Sport, *=Special), S is Stroke (2-Stroke, 4-Stroke), and C is Cylinders (P=Parallel/Inline, S=Square, T=Tandem, V=V-configuration). If the Type is marked as Special (N* or S*), it means that the bike is already fitted with various custom parts and, hence, the number of buyable upgrades will be limited. Also, most of the special bikes don't include headlights, although some of them do.

For the Acquire column, F is Free (one of the free choices when starting Riding Spirits mode), M is Manufacturer (available from the Shop), and P is Prize (awarded as a Bonus for a certain achievement). The letter following "P:" shows where the bike can be won (D=
Duel, C|B|A|S=Race, T=Training, and E=TimeAttack).

Bike Availability

Initially, there are only 11 bikes available at the Shop, and all of those are in the 250cc class. The table below shows how to make the other classes of bikes available at the Shop. Note that the classes don't necessarily need to be unlocked in any particular order; you could, for example, put a high priority on winning A14 or A15 and make all bikes available in one go.

Class Of BikesHow To Make Available
Up to 400ccWin a B2 (Battle of the Kings) race
Up to 750ccWin B12 (Class Race > 400) plus a B3 (One-Make) race
750cc and higherWin A14 (Class Race > 750) or A15 (Class Race > Open)

Bike Colors

For the Bike column of the table below, an asterisk (*) means that the bike is also available in a special color that isn't available at the Shop. Note that a bike will only be marked if it's available as both a Bonus and Shop bike. For the Acquire column, 'M' (Manufacturer) means that the bike can be bought, while anything else means that the bike can be
won. For the Colors column, all color names except those enclosed in brackets ([]) are from the in-game display screens. Where applicable, the colors are listed in the order in which they appear at the Shop.

"Money Makers"

The table below shows some of the races that can earn you a fair amount of points in a fairly short time. Note that pretty much any
race that's easy enough to win consistently can be used as a "money-maker". Also note that it's assumed that you're starting from scratch in Riding Spirits mode; if you started in Battle Duel mode and you've acquired bikes there, you'll probably have better alternatives than the bikes listed here.

Recommended Bikes

For unrestricted races, there will often be several bikes to choose from, a few of which are shown in the
second table below. For races that have specific requirements, the first table shows a few of the bikes that I've tested and found to be okay. The text in parentheses shows how the bike can be acquired, which can include an event and/or price.

The table below shows some of the general-purpose bikes that can be used for unrestricted races. Note that the bikes listed for the 250cc and 400cc classes were chosen more for their availability than for their competitiveness (a 250cc starter bike can be acquired for free, and a 400cc bike can easily be won in a B2 race). Note that there will be better choices as you progress through the game. Also note that the '02 version of the ZX-6R, due to its 636cc displacement, is not eligible for the 600cc class races, while the '01 version is.

Time Attack Mode

As the name suggests, this mode is all about breaking
track lap records. There are a total of 16 challenges, two of which are initially hidden. For each challenge, the screen will show 3 placeholders for medals. However, winning all 3 medals won't complete the challenge since there is one more goal thereafter. Once you've reached that final goal, you'll have the word "Master" stamped on top of the 3 medals. Although the Master stamp isn't represented by a medal icon, it does count as a medal for the statistic on the Status page.

The table below may be useful if you want to practice on the bikes and tracks in Garage > Test Run > Free Run before tackling the events in Time Attack mode. When using an upgraded bike, be sure to uninstall all of the upgrades so that practice conditions are as close as possible to the actual Time Attack conditions. If you'd rather not reset a bike's setup, an alternative is to buy the bike from the Shop and use that instead. Note that Time Attack mode also allows you to use a bike from your Garage to set an unofficial time (i.e., one that doesn't count for medals). To do so, press [R1] and then [Left]/[Right] to cycle through the bikes in your Garage (these will be shown in the Garage's current sort order).

Event Bonus Bikes

The tables in this section are meant to give an overview of the bikes that can be won in various game modes; these include
Battle > Duel, Riding Spirits > Race, Riding Spirits > Training, and Time Attack. Note that there are only 2 achievements (Class C complete and Time Attack complete) that award multiple bikes; for all others where multiple bikes are listed, only one of the listed bikes is awarded at a time (in which case, you'll need to win the same race multiple times if you want them all). Also note that the list of multiple bonuses is not necessarily in the order in which the bikes are awarded. Also worth keeping in mind is that events will only award a specific bike in a specific color once, so owning a duplicate of a bonus-only bike is only possible if the exact same bike is awarded in separate events.

• Battle > Duel. The table below shows the bikes that can be won in Battle Duel mode. The duels are grouped in sets of 4 and, initially, only the D1 set (D11-D14) will be available. For the next 3 sets (D2-D4), a new set will become available only when all 4 duels of the most recently available set have been won. The duels of the final set (D5) are unlocked 1 duel at a time, in the same way that the A5 and S5 events are unlocked.

• Class S +. The table below shows the extra bonuses that can be acquired in Riding Spirits mode after completing Class S. As mentioned earlier, completing Class S alone won't award a bonus (not even a non-bike bonus). However, once you've reached that point, the program apparently checks various bits of data and awards bikes based on what it finds. Note that the bonus, in this case, won't be awarded in the usual way but, instead, is awarded when you return to the Garage menu.

• Riding Spirits > Training. The table below shows the bikes that can be won in Riding Spirits Training mode. There are 2 groups of challenges in this mode (Safety Riding and Circuit Riding), with each group consisting of 20 challenges. If you're familiar with the Gran Turismo series, the challenges in Training mode are similar to GT license tests. Note that, as in Time Attack mode, for each challenge, there are 3 placeholders for medals, but winning 3 medals won't complete the challenge; the final goal (which actually counts as the 4th medal) is the word "Master" stamped on top of the 3 medals.

Non-Bike Bonuses

The table below shows some of the non-bike bonuses that are awarded for various achievements. Note that, for the
Daijiro Special Suit Set, the n part doesn't matter; you just need 74,000 to be the last 5 digits. Also note that, since I don't have the skill or patience to complete Training mode without using cheats, the table doesn't include the full list of suits that can be acquired in that mode.

Gameplay

Getting Started

This section describes the basic procedure for starting a new gamesave, plus an example of how to make use of early-stage bikes.
  1. When the program starts up, it automatically plays a demo (if you want to skip it, you can press [X]). After pressing [START] on the title screen, you'll be presented with the Main Menu which includes the items below; these are listed vertically in-game:
    Replay StockTime AttackSave/LoadRiding SpiritsQuick RaceBattleOptions
The Riding Spirits item takes you into what is basically the career mode, while Quick Race is basically like the arcade mode found in other racing games. But, before going any further, I'd recommend choosing the
Options item to set your preferences. At the very least, I'd recommend setting Control to Arcade. I usually also turn off Vibration, BGM, and Replay Effect.
  2. Assuming you're not yet familiar with the bikes and tracks in this game, I recommend trying a few races in Quick Race to get an idea of what the racing will be like when you enter Riding Spirits mode. You can check the Events section to see which tracks might be worth trying before moving on to the next step.
  3. The first time you enter Riding Spirits mode, you'll need to choose a starter bike before you can go any further. The table below shows your choices. If you don't have a preference, I'd recommend the blue RGV-r250SP '96 (this is to avoid duplicates, since you'll win a red one later).
     First Choice / RecommendedSecond Choice
     Honda NSR250R-SE '96 (S, 2, V2, 29.3kW, 138kg) NS250R '84 (S, 2, V2, 33kW, 144kg)
     Kawasaki ZZ-R250 '01 (S, 4, P2, 29.4kW, 146kg) Balius-II '01 (N, 4, P4, 29kW, 151kg)
     Suzuki RGV-r250SP '96 (S, 2, V2, 29.4kW, 134kg) RG250r '83 (S, 2, P2, 33kW, 131kg)
     Yamaha TZR250SPR '94 (S, 2, V2, 29.4kW, 132kg) RZ250R '84 (N, 2, P2, 33kW, 143kg)
For an explanation of the text in parentheses, see the
    Bike List section.
  4. Once you've chosen a bike and gear, you'll be presented with the Riding Spirits Menu which includes the following items shown horizontally near the bottom of the screen:
    GarageRaceTrainingShop
In addition to a free bike, you're also given an initial Pt.100,000. For an easier go of it, you can go to Shop > Parts > Engine System and buy a 4-1 muffler; this will use up all of your points but gives you an instant power boost.
  5. Go to Race > Class C > Beginner and then do the Welcome race (Oval Course). The muffler upgrade gives you a fairly easy win here. Once you've won your first race, further gameplay will basically be a matter of learning tracks and winning races. At some point, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the Garage Menu which includes the following items listed vertically in-game:
    BikeSuitHelmetStatusTest RunSave/Load
Choosing the Bike item takes you to a list of the bikes you currently own. While viewing the list, you can press [L1]/[R1] to scroll up/down a page, and you can press [L2]/[R2] to sort the list by Manufacturer, Order, Displacement, or Model Year. Pressing [X] on a bike allows you to view the bike and gives you various options, including:
    SettingParts ReplacementChangeSell
You can also press [L1] to view the bike's spec sheet.
  6. It's important to keep in mind that the tracks in this game are a bit quirky and will probably take quite a bit of time and patience to get used to. If you want to practice a track, there are a few game modes where you can do so:
      • Garage > Test Run > Free Run  • Main Menu > Quick Race  • Main Menu > Battle > Duel
Note that, when learning a track, it's often useful to study the Replay after a race. While viewing a Replay, you can press [Up]/[Down] to select a different rider, and you can press [SELECT] to toggle the camera view. The ability to use Replays to study driving lines makes them ideal for learning tracks and honing your skills. Note that, although Free Run doesn't include a Replay option, it does allow you to tune a bike and there is no limit on the length of a session. Alternatively, if none of the above game modes appeals to you, you could just do the races in Riding Spirits Race mode and learn the tracks as you go along. In any case, once you've found a method of learning that works for you, further gameplay should be a bit easier. The remaining steps of this "Getting Started" section describe one way of proceeding from here. Note that this is basically just an example of how to get some use out of a few of the bikes you'll acquire early on. For another example, see Restarting.
  7. For the gameflow tables below, the first column shows the bike to use (with how it's acquired in parentheses), the second column shows the upgrade level, and the third column shows the races to do. Note that, if the first column doesn't include text in parentheses, it means that the bike is an already-owned previously-used bike rather than a newly-acquired or unused one. For the rightmost columns, a double dash (--) denotes a change in upgrade level. For the third column, an appended 'r' denotes a recurring event; this will either mean that the race is one where multiple bikes can be won, or that the race is a "money-maker".
  8. This first step is basically to get some use out of your starter bike. Note that, although C3 will be available after winning C1 and C2, we'll leave that series for the next step. The important race in this step is B23 which awards a GSX400 Impulse that can be used to acquire 4 other useful bikes; in this case, by winning B12 4 times.

    Suzuki GSX400 Impulse '01 (B23)StockB12r
  9. In this step, we'll finish off Class C and do a few races that we already have bikes for. Note that using the bonus version of the RGV-r250SP means you don't need to uninstall the muffler that the starter bike is fitted with.
    Suzuki RGV-r250SP '96 (B12)StockC31, C33

    Kawasaki 750RS '73 (B12)Light (3-1 muffler)B22, B36
Once you've won all of the above, you're pretty much done with this "Getting Started" section. The Further Gameplay section shows one example of how to proceed from here.

Basic Tuning

This section includes a few notes on buying and using upgrades.

Further Gameplay

This section continues where
Getting Started leaves off. This is basically an example of playing through the game by doing the races in the usual way, starting with Class B and ending with Class S. This is in contrast to Restarting, where the priority is on unlocking all of the events rather than on completing all of the races.
  1. At this stage, most of the undone events that are currently unlocked will require spending more points than previously required. The original goal in this step was to finish the One-Makes (B3) but, since the bikes required for those races are of limited use, and because it'll cost more to win those races than they'll earn back, the new goal is to do some other races to earn some more points. Note that the priority is on completing B5; this is so that you'll have 2 bikes to choose from (YZF-R6 or GSX-R600), either of which can be used to win the rest of the races in this step.

    Yamaha YZF-R6 '02 (Pt.930,000)StockB51, B53r, B13, B42-43, A13
  2. As mentioned in the previous step, completing the rest of the One-Makes can be quite costly. This is partly due to the upgrades needed to beat the AI bikes, which are also upgraded. I should also mention that part of my problem is that I don't know the Rampart track as well as I should. If you do know the track well, it might be possible to win these races with Light or Semi-Light upgrades instead of Semi-Full.
    Yamaha TZR250SPR '94 (B32)Semi-FullB33, B41, A11

    Kawasaki Z900 Super Four '72 (B36)Semi-FullB37
    Suzuki GSX1100S '00 (B31)Semi-FullB38
  3. At this stage, there are only 2 races left in the Power of Heart series. Although a TZR250SPR with enough upgrades and proper tuning is capable of winning B45, a better option might be to use a stock TL1000S instead. However, before we can buy one, we'll need to unlock the rest of the Shop bikes (750cc and higher) by winning either A14 or A15 which, in turn, won't be available until A12 has been won.

  4. With Class B done, the goal now is to complete Class A. This step may require doing a "money maker" every now and then, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem at this stage; to be able to afford the ZX-12R, I did B53, but there are others to choose from.

    Kawasaki ZX-12R '02Semi-FullA21, A31-33, A5
  5. At this stage, all that's left is to complete Class S, and there are several ways to do this. Although the logical way forward would be to start with S11 and end with S57, this step takes a slightly different approach. The general idea here is to do the harder stuff first for an easier go of it later. Note that the ZX-12R is capable of winning S3, but its weight makes the Up Hills a bit of a pain. A GSX-R1000 would be a good choice for S3 but, since it's the bonus for winning this event, the YZF-R1 seemed like a good alternative.

Restarting

This section assumes that you've already played through Riding Spirits at least once and you just want to start a new gamesave with efficiency in mind. This might be useful for a gamesave that's meant to store a bike collection where the bonus bikes (i.e., bikes that can only be acquired once) are left in their original state or can be brought back to their original state (i.e., no permanent upgrades have been bought). Keeping bikes in their original state might be important if you maintain a database and you need a gamesave to use for reference purposes.

The gameflow tables below are from a gamesave where the initial goal was to find an efficient way to unlock all of the events in Riding Spirits Race mode. Once that goal was accomplished, I decided to complete Class S to recheck the "
Class S +" bonuses. And, once those were rechecked, I figured I might as well finish off the rest of the undone races. For an explanation of the format of the tables, see Step 7 of Getting Started.
  1. The main goal in this first step is to make some progress without spending much on new bikes or upgrades. This step also makes 2 new groups of bikes available at the Shop, the important one being the group that includes the 600cc bikes needed in the next step.

  2. While the previous step focuses mainly on earning points without spending much, this step focuses on unlocking events so that there's a wide selection of choices open. This step also makes all of the remaining previously-hidden manufacturer bikes available at the Shop.
