Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • This is a PlayStation (PS1) game, so the sounds and graphics are a bit rough. The graphics can, at times, be a real strain on the eyes and may take some time to get used to.
  • There doesn't seem to be any way to Save the game unless a car is selected. This makes it impossible to Save your preferences (Options) before buying your first car.
  • When using the Carbon Copy feature, the specs shown are not necessarily the specs of the car on the other memory card.
The Good
  • Includes a few cars and tracks that aren't found in most other racing games.
  • Includes a Carbon Copy feature that allows you to buy cars from other gamesaves.
  • Only requires 1 block on a PS1 memory card.

The Cars

Car List

The table below shows the 46 cars in SCGT's 32 teams grouped by class. The rightmost 2 columns show how the car can be acquired: Buy is the
Car Shop price if the car is bought via Buy Car, while Copy is the price if bought from a Garage Gamesave using Carbon Copy. A dash ('-') in the Buy column means that the car can only be acquired by either winning it in an event or buying it via Carbon Copy.

Modifiable Cars

The table below shows the cars that Modifications can be bought for. The data in the x1 columns is for the car after it's been upgraded to stay in its original class, while the data in the x2 columns is for the car after it's been upgraded to the next higher class (shown in the C2 column). The CCn columns show the car's
Carbon Copy price if bought from a Garage Gamesave. If you're buying mods for a car that you want to include on a Garage Gamesave, also see Modification Costs.

Arcade Mode

This is one of the two modes that are initially available when starting a new gamesave. Aracde Mode is a good place to start if you're new to SCGT and you want to get a general idea of what the racing in Season Mode will be like. The Arcade menu includes the following items:
Select CarSelect TrackRace LengthSelect FieldStart
Initially, the list of selectable cars includes:
• BMW M3 GT GT3• Porsche 911 GT GT3
• Callaway C7 GT GT2• Porsche 911 GT1 Team Rohr GT1
• Lister Storm GT GT2• Saleen SR GT GT3
• Mosler Raptor Team Mosler GT1• Vector M-12 GT GT2
• Panoz GTR-1 Panoz Motor Sports GT1
Any car that you currently own will also be available to select. If you have multiple cars of the same class, and you're not sure which one to use for a Season, you can test them in Arcade Mode before deciding. The Race Length and Select Field options also make Arcade Mode an ideal place to learn or practice tracks. The initially-available tracks are:
• Desert Speedway NN• Road Atlanta N
• Laguna Seca Raceway N• Sebring Int. Raceway N
• Mosport Park N
The other tracks (listed below) will become available when you've raced on them in
Season Mode. Note that if you have another gamesave that has the Paris Season unlocked, you can temporarily unlock all 18 tracks for the duration of the current game session by using Carbon Copy to read that gamesave. Note that the read alone will suffice (i.e., you don't necessarily have to CC anything).
• Cours de Triumph N• Road Atlanta R
• Desert Speedway N• Sebring Int. Raceway NN
• Eiffel Tour N• Sebring Int. Raceway NW
• Eiffel Tour NW• Sebring Int. Short N
• Laguna Seca Raceway R• Sebring Int. Short NN
• Mosport Park NW• Sebring Int. Short NW
• Road Atlanta NW

Time Trial Mode

Although this mode is initially unavailable, the simple purchase of your first car is enough to make it available. The Time Trial menu includes:
Select CarTune VehicleSelect TrackView RecordsStart
The list of selectable cars will include only those that you currently own. The Tune Vehicle option makes Time Trial Mode especially useful for testing a car's setup and making any changes that might be necessary prior to an actual race. The list of available
tracks will be the same as what's available in Arcade Mode. The View Records option and the results after a Time Trial can be used for comparison purposes. The table below shows the preset track records, along with the cars that the records were presumably set by. Note that Top Speed is in kph (kilometers per hour).

Gameplay

Getting Started

  1. The Menus. Once you've pressed [START] on the screen where the game tells you to, you'll be presented with a Main menu that includes these items:
    One PlayerTwo PlayerLoadOptionsCredits
You can set your preferences by choosing the Options item; after which, you can press [Triangle] to return to the Main menu. You can then either choose One Player (to start a new gamesave), or choose
Load before choosing One Player (to continue a previously Saved game).
    • Choosing the One Player item takes you to the Mode menu that includes the 3 game modes:
    SeasonArcadeTime Trial
Season Mode is basically like the Career mode found in other racing games, and it's probably where you'll want to spend most of your time. A Season in Sports Car GT is similar to a championship, except that there are no points awarded and the rival cars won't always be the same in all of the races of the same Season. In that sense, SCGT's Season is more like a series of Single Race events that need to be done in a specific order. If you want to try a few cars and/or tracks before entering Season Mode, you can spend some time in Arcade Mode first. Note that Time Trial Mode will only be available if you currently own a car.
    • Choosing the Season item takes you to the Class Select menu which includes the 4 classes: GTQ, GT3, GT2, and GT1. Choosing a Class then takes you to the Paddock menu which includes these items:
    Car ShopModificationsTuningSave GameStart
Car Shop allows you to Select, Buy, or Sell a car, while Modifications is basically like a Parts Shop where you can Buy, Install, or Remove upgrades.
  2. First Car. For your first car, you're initially given $50,000, which gives you 2 choices if you're starting from scratch, or 4 choices if you have a Garage Gamesave that includes the 2 extra cars.
    Starter CarsBuyCopy
    . BMW M3 Sport40,00030,000
    . Porsche 911 Sport--50,000
    . Saleen S281 Sport25,00018,000
    . Saleen S281 Sport (upgraded)--47,250
The best choice is probably the Porshe 911 Sport if you have it on a Garage Gamesave, or the BMW M3 Sport if you don't. Once you've bought a car, you can either choose Select Car from the Car Shop menu or press the game controller's [Triangle] button, either of which will take you back to the Paddock menu.
  3. Pre-Race. Choosing Start from the Paddock brings you to the Race Details screen which shows various bits of info such as the track, duration, and condition. The screen also includes 2 menu items:
    Start RaceReturn To Paddock
If you want to perform any tasks before doing the race, you can choose Return To Paddock. Here are examples of when returning to the Paddock might be useful:
    • If you want to change the car's setup, you can do so in Tuning and/or, if you want to play it safe, you can Save the game before continuing. After either of these tasks, you can choose Start to return to the Race Details screen.
    • If you want to do some practice laps or you want to continue the Season at a later time, you can Save the game and then either exit out to Arcade Mode (to get some practice), or exit the game (if you want to continue at a later time). In either case, when you return to Season Mode and choose the class you were in, the game will ask "There is already a GT-X season in progress. Restart season?". Answer "No" to continue where you left off. Note that you should only answer "Yes" if you want to Quit the Season.
  4. Post-Race. After finishing a race, pressing [X] twice will take you to the Track Purse screen which shows your earnings and how much is currently in the Bank. Pressing [X] on that screen takes you to the Race Results screen which shows the race results and current track records. If you've set any new records, you'll be asked to enter your initials, and you can use the [Up], [Down], and/or [X] buttons to do so. The menu on the next screen, if you're mid-season, includes these items:
    Next RaceQuit SeasonRetry - N -
Note that the 3 Retries that you're allowed are for the whole Season (i.e., not 3 Retries per race). If you're mid-season, you can choose the Next Race item to continue to the Race Details screen of the next race of the Season.
  5. End Of Season. If you've just finished the final race of the Season, you'll get a different post-race menu that includes:
    Season SummaryRetry - N -
Choosing Season Summary brings you to the Season Results screen that shows the final results and possibly includes a message telling you whether or not you qualify to race in the next class. Note that qualifying for the next higher class (i.e., becoming eligible for the next higher Season) requires a Top-3 finish in all of the races of the current Season. Finishing a Season in 1st place overall entitles you to a bonus car and, if you finish the Season with what the game deems to be worthy results, you'll get an offer to compete in a bonus event called Supreme Challenge Invitational.
  6. Now that you know the basics of SCGT gameplay, you can set your goal and proceed as you'd like. Two of the most common goals are to unlock all Seasons and/or unlock all cars.

Garage Gamesave

If you have a spare memory card, and you enjoy Sports Car GT enough to want to play it in the future, I'd highly recommend creating a custom Garage Gamesave that includes your favorite
Starter Car and any other cars that might be useful for further gameplay. Having a Garage Gamesave on a memory card in Slot 2 means you have the option of using Carbon Copy as an alternative way to buy cars. The advantage of using Carbon Copy is that it can save you some time and money which, ultimately, equates to more efficient gameplay. Also, a car bought from a Garage Gamesave will retain its value so you won't lose anything if you decide to Sell it later.

Creating A Garage Gamesave. There are various ways to create a Garage Gamesave, 3 of which are described below. Keep in mind that any Modifications bought for a car will add to that car's Carbon Copy price. However, although you'll pay the normal price for the mods when you create the Garage Gamesave, you'll only pay half that amount when you use the Garage Gamesave (e.g., spending $200,000 on mods for a car will only add $100,000 to its Carbon Copy price).
Method 1:
This method assumes you don't mind using a cheat code.
1.Use a cheat code to unlock all cars.
2.Buy Modifications for any car that might be useful in upgraded form.
3.Sell any car that you know you won't ever want to buy.
Method 2:
This method assumes you've already played through the game one or more times and you still have an older gamesave on another memory card.
1.Copy an existing old gamesave to a different memory card, or use the old gamesave itself.
2.Buy, sell, and/or modify the cars to make the gamesave suitable to use as a Garage.
For Step 2, if you've bought Modifications for a car and you want to restore the car to its original stock condition, you'll need to Sell the car and then Buy or win it a second time.
Method 3:
This method assumes you're starting from scratch with no cheat codes.
1.Go through the normal steps of playing through the game while taking note of which cars are useful and which ones are not.
2.Once you've unlocked the Paris Season, you can test any car you haven't yet tested and possibly retry any car you're not sure about.
3.Sell any cars that aren't useful enough to keep.
For all 3 methods, the point of selling any non-useful cars is to keep the Garage small so you won't have to scroll through so many cars to find the one you want.

Recommended Cars. The list below shows the cars that I consider the most useful to include on a Garage Gamesave. The text in parentheses is the car's class, upgrade state, and CC price.
• Porsche 911 Sport (GTQ, stock, $50,000)
• Panoz Esperante GT (GT3, full GTQ+GT3 Mods, $272,000)
• Mosler Raptor GT (GT2, stock, $125,000)
• Mosler Raptor Team Mosler (GT1, stock, $200,000)
Note that the 911 Sport is basically just to get a new game started and, once you have access to
Easy Money, the Esperante can be used for both GTQ and GT3 (simply Install/Remove mods for eligibility). Also note that you won't normally need to CC the Team Mosler GT1 unless you want to skip the second GT2 Invitational (where it can be won).

Car Collecting

This section includes a few notes that may be useful if your goal is to unlock all cars in the normal way (i.e., without using cheat codes). This section assumes you already know the
basics and you know all of the tracks well enough to be able to get through a GT1 Season without too much trouble. It's also assumed that you know how bonus cars are awarded. For other relevant information, see:
  • Car List for a list of the 46 cars and their prices.
  • Season Mode for a list of the 5 Seasons and their Invitationals.
  • Garage Gamesave for a list of the Recommended Cars to use.

New Start. If you're starting a new gamesave for car collecting, there are various strategies that may be worth considering. The list below is just meant as food for thought.
 • Use a Garage Gamesave to CC cars from, or Use the Buy Car option only?
 • Start with the best Starter Car, or Start with the cheapest Starter Car?
 • Use
Easy Money for cash, or Redo Seasons for cash?
 • Unlock the 4 classes first, or Put no importance on when classes are unlocked?
 • Collect all Prize-Only cars first, or Collect cars with no preferance of order?
 • Do the easy stuff (GTQ, GT3) first, or Do the hard stuff (GT2, GT1) first?
The choices you make will largely depend on how well you know the game, and whether you want an easy go of it or you prefer a bit more of a challenge.

Buy Or Win. If you know how bonus cars are awarded, the info in the table below may be useful for estimating how many times a Season may need to be done, or how many cars you may need to buy. In general, the number of Invitationals determines the minimum number of times you'll need to do a Season. The number of cars you may need to Buy or CC (or redo a Season for) will generally be determined by the number of Buyable cars minus the number of Invitationals.
 GTQGT3GT2GT1
Total Cars:8111413
Buyable Cars:8893
Prize-Only Cars:03510
Invitational Races:3555
• As an example: For GTQ, the table shows that you'll need to do at least 3 Seasons and win 3 Invitationals. If you win all 3 Seasons, you'll have 4 of the 8 Buyable GTQ cars (your Starter Car plus 3 Season bonuses), leaving you with 4 GTQ cars that still need to be acquired. Those 4 cars can either be bought (via Buy or CC) or you can choose to redo the Season 4 more times. Note that any combination of the above is also possible.
• Another example: For GT1, the table shows 5 Invitationals but only 3 Buyable cars. Given that a GT1 Season will award a GT2 car until all of them are owned, you can leave 2 GT2 cars (but acquire the other 7 of 9) before doing your first GT1 Season. Assumming you know the game well enough, you'll win the 2 remaining Buyable GT2 cars in the first 2 GT1 Seasons and you'll win the 3 Buyable GT1 cars in the remaining 3 GT1 Seasons.

GT1 Invitationals. For GT1, it appears that simply winning all of the races of a GT1 Season may not be sufficient to get an Invite; apparently, the game wants you to win the Season in an overwhelming way. Of the cars that I've tested, the only one that seems competitive enough to get an Invite is the Mosler Raptor Team Mosler #2.
• Initially, it appeared as if the only time an Invitational was offered was when the 20-lap Sebring finale was won with the whole field lapped. However, it turns out that that's not always necessary. On at least one occasion, I got an Invite even though I failed to lap the 2nd-place car (purple Q9). And, on another occasion, I ran the race with Rain tires and still got an Invite even though I failed to lap the 3rd and 2nd-place cars (the silver Visteon and purple Q9).
• It's possible (although this is pure speculation) that an Invite depends on a certain number of cars being lapped over the whole Season rather than just depending on the final Sebring race. Another possibility is that the game keeps track of total race times (similar to the way rally racing keeps score) and that an Invite depends on staying within a certain total time. In any case, it's still a mystery to me.
• Note that, although there are no Paris Invitationals, there are 2 GT1 Invitationals that use Paris tracks. If you're using the Paris Season to practice for those final 2 Invitationals, keep in mind that the cars (the Porsche AG and Panoz Q9) won't be as easy to beat in the Invitationals.

Example Walkthrough. In the example below, the priority is on collecting all of the Invitational bonus cars first. Once all of those Prize-Only cars have been won, any remaining Buyable cars will be fairly easy to acquire.
1.  Use your Starter Car to gain access to Easy Money, then do the money-maker until you have about $500,000. Then Buy + upgrade a Panoz Esperante GT ($90,000+58,500). Note: If you have the recommended Panoz on a Garage Gamesave, you can CC the upgraded car for $272,000 and then Install/Remove the pertinent Modifications for GTQ eligibility.
2. Use the Panoz to win the GTQ Season + Invitational 3 times. Remember to select GTQ after each Season.
3. Buy the Class Elevation Modifications to upgrade the Panoz to GT3 ($335,500). Then, use the class-elevated Panoz to win the GT3 Season + Invitational 5 times. Note: If you CCed the upgraded Panoz, remember to reInstall the previously-Removed GT3 Modifications.
4. Buy a Mosler Raptor GT ($195,000) and then win the GT2 Season + Invitational 5 times. Note: If you have the Raptor GT on a Garage Gamesave, the CC price is $125,000.
5. Use the Mosler Raptor Team Mosler to win the GT1 Season + Invitational 5 times. Given that a GT1 Season will take about 90 minutes, this Step will probably take 7-8 hours to complete.
6. At this stage, the only cars you don't yet own will be Buyable cars that you can either buy (via Buy Car or Carbon Copy) or win (by redoing Seasons). If you're in a hurry to finish your collection, you can simply buy the rest of the missing cars. Alternatively, if you want to extend gameplay, you can redo the relevant Seasons to acquire the cars you're missing.
