Tourist Trophy

Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Field is limited to a maximum of 4 riders.
  • A Tourist Trophy gamesave takes up a huge amount of space on a memory card (about 1.5M).
  • Changing bikes causes the game to be saved even if Auto-save is set to Restricted.
The Good
  • Uses many of the same tracks as Gran Turismo 4, so the learning curve is less steep than for most other motorcycle racing sims.
  • Includes onscreen accelerator/brake gauges (handy for checking the proper working of buttons).
  • There is no randomizing done when prize bikes are awarded. Each event awards a specific bike in a specific color, so you'll never end up with duplicates.
  • Includes lots of interesting information about the bikes, viewable via the "Bike Details" feature.

The Bikes

Bike List

In the table below, T is the Type (Normal or Race), C is the number of colors that the bike is available in, Cc is engine displacement (in cubic centimeters), BHP is Brake Horsepower, Kg. is weight (in kilograms), and PWR is Power-to-Weight Ratio. For the Acquire and Eligible columns, numbers correspond to events in
Race Events, while letters refer to Licenses. A single letter represents the license prerequisite to unlock the bike in Challenge Mode, while LGX means that the bike can be won by earning all Gold medals for license X.

Useful Bikes

The table below shows an overview of some useful bikes and the events that they can be used for. The letters in the Acquire column (N, J, E, S) refer to the
License prerequisite to unlock the bike in Challenge Mode, while numbers correspond to events in Race Events. An asterisk (*) in the Useful For column denotes that the bike is required for that event.

Using the list above, a General Walkthrough might look something like this:
  1. Acquire all 4 of your licenses.
  2. Acquire 13 of the 14 bikes listed. For Bike #4, if you can get all Gold for the Novice license, go with the Honda CB400SS RM; otherwise, go with the Yamaha SR400 RM.
  3. Use the acquired bikes to do the events listed in the "Useful For" column. The events can be done in pretty much any order since you already have all the necessary bikes.
  4. For 100% game completion, check all the medals in Race Events and redo any races that aren't Gold. Then, go to Challenge Mode and win all of the challenges that haven't already been won.

Licenses

There are 4 licenses that can be acquired in Tourist Trophy Mode: Novice, Junior, Expert, and Super. All Bronze or all Silver for any particular license will earn you new riding gear, while all Gold will earn you new
bikes. Although licenses don't count towards game completion percentage and there are no license requirements for Race Events, you do need licenses in Challenge Mode where 5 of the required bikes will need to be acquired.

Challenge Mode

There are 93 bikes (201 if you count all bikes in all colors) that can be acquired by clearing various challenges. Initially, you're eligible for only the first 8 of them (one of which, the Suzuki Skywave 250 TypeS, is already done). To become eligible for the others, you'll need to acquire the necessary
licenses.

In the table below, L is the required license, C is the number of colors that the bike is available in, and T is the type of bike (Normal or Racing). The list is in the order that they appear when sorted by "All" (the default is "By Manufacturer").

Race Events

The events in Race Events are pretty much like those in Gran Turismo 4. The first 4 events are for Street bikes while all others are for Racing bikes. You can win a Championship without necessarily winning all of its races, but they all need to be won eventually for 100% game completion. Winning the TT World Series (event #22) opens a credits video and unlocks the Special Machine Festival event for Suzuka8H bikes.

The Events column includes the name of the event, the restrictions, and one or more recommended bikes. For the Races column, numbered races are part of a Championship while bullets (•) denote Single Races. The number in parentheses is the number of laps.

Gameplay

Getting Started

This section describes the basic program flow when starting a new gamesave. Note that a Tourist Trophy gamesave requires about 1.5M (1500K) free space.
  1. Choose a language. The choices are: English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish.
  2. Create Game Data. Assuming the inserted memory card has at least 1475KB free space, you'll need to press [OK] on the "Create Game Data now?" dialog if you want to be able to do Tourist Trophy mode; otherwise, you'll be limited to Arcade mode.
  3. Type a display name. The name you specify will show up on your licenses on the Status screen. As far as I can tell, there is no way to change this name later.
  4. Set the rider's height. You can set this to your own height if you want; otherwise, the default height (175 cm) should be okay. If you want to change this height later, you can press [START] from your Garage.
  5. Set your global options. From the Main Menu, go to Options and set your preferences. You can turn off BGM (BackGround Music) in the Sound section, and change the units in the Units section. In the Misc section, you can minimize wear 'n' tear on your memory card by setting Auto-save to "Restricted"; just remember to save the game manually before shutting down the PS2.
  6. Exit the Options page. The startup menu includes 2 modes to choose from: Arcade Mode and Tourist Trophy Mode. If you're not familiar with the Gran Turismo series, you can use Arcade Mode to learn some of the bikes and tracks. Otherwise, choose Tourist Trophy Mode. While on a bike, you can change the camera view by pressing [SELECT].

Example Walkthrough

There are many ways to play through Tourist Trophy Mode, and this is just one example (see
Useful Bikes for another). This walkthrough assumes that you've already gone through all the preliminary steps of Getting Started and that you're already fairly familiar with most of the tracks used in Race Events.
  1. Since the bikes that can be acquired without a license won't get you very far, the first thing you'll need to do to get off to a decent start is to get at least your Novice license.
  2. Go to Challenge Mode, find the Yamaha TZR250SPR '95 and Suzuki GSX-R 750 '05, and then win the challenges to win the bikes. Then, go to your Garage, and switch (Change) to the TZR250SPR. While still in your Garage, go to Settings, switch to Set B, press Edit, scroll right to Exhaust, and then change it to 'Sports'. Then, go to Race Events and do the events below using the TZR250SPR for Event 1 and the GSX-R 750 for Events 2-4.
1.Street Machine Cup: Stage 1Street bikes under 250cc
2.Street Machine Cup: Stage 2Street bikes under 750cc
3.Street Machine Cup: Stage 3Street bikes under 1000cc
4.Street Machine Cup: Stage 4Street bikes unlimited
  3. At this stage, you're pretty much done with Street bikes since the rest of the events will be for Racing bikes. So, go to Challenge Mode, press the [All] button (upper right of the screen), and then do the last 3 challenges that you're eligible for, in the green N section; these will be the Yamaha TMAX RM '05, the Yamaha SR400 RM '05, and the Yamaha TZ125 '03. Then, do the events below using each bike in turn. Note that all of these are Championships (as opposed to Single Races) and you can use the Qualification Run (2nd item in the Race menu) to practice and/or to test setups.
     7.TMAX CupYamaha TMAX RM only
21.TT Classic Series *Honda CB400 SS RM or Yamaha SR400 RM
10.125cc Competition Model SeriesYamaha TZ125 only
    * If you have any trouble winning Event #21 using the Yamaha SR400 RM, try this: Go to Settings, switch to Set B, go to Drivetrain, set Auto Settings to 2 and set Final to 3.300.
  4. Switch to the Yamaha FZR400 RM '86 that you won in Event #7 (the TMAX Cup) and use it to do the events below. For Race 2 of Event #5 (Super Speedway in the Sunday Cup), the default settings should be fine; for all other races, I used Set B with the following settings: Brakes 3/4, Tires Medium/Hard, Drivetrain Auto 2 with Final at 3.200. If you have any trouble winning Event #9, skip to Step 7.
     5.Sunday CupRacing bikes under 750cc
     9.80's Heroes Series1980's Racing bikes under 400cc
  5. If you won Event #9, you now own one of the best bikes in the game. Switch to the Trick*Star ZX-10R Suzuka8H '05 and use it to do the events below.
     6.Clubman CupRacing bikes unlimited
     17.Heavyweight SeriesRacing bikes over 900cc
     22.TT World SeriesRacing bikes unlimited
     23.Special Machine FestivalSuzuka8H Racing bikes
  6. Do the events below using previously-acquired prize bikes. Switch to the Kawasaki Z1000 RM '05 for Event #16, and switch to the Suzuki GSX 1100S Katana F.E. RM '00 for Event #20.
16.Monster SeriesSpecific Racing bikes over 999cc
20.Nostalgic Festival *Specific nostalgic Racing bikes
    * For Races 1 and 3, I used the default settings but, for Race 2, I used Set B with the following: Brakes 3/6, Tires S/M, Drivetrain Auto 2 and Final 3.200.
  7. At this stage, there are a few other previously-acquired prize bikes that are eligible for other undone events, but they're not the ideal bikes you'd choose if you had a choice. Since you've already done pretty much everything that can be done with only a Novice license, now would be a good time to go back to Licence School and get your Junior license. But, since the Junior license won't open up as much gameplay as the Novice license did, it's probably a good idea to get your Expert license as well. You'll also need a Super license at some point, and you can either get it in this step or get it later.
  8. Go to Challenge Mode and win a Honda NSR250R SE RM '93, a Yamaha TZ250 '03, and a Yamaha RZV500R RM '84. Then, do the events below using each bike in turn.
     8.2-Stroke SeriesSpecific 2-stroke Racing bikes
11.250cc Competition Model SeriesYamaha TZ250 only

  9. Go back to Challenge Mode and win a Suzuki GSX-R 600 RM '05 and a Buell Firebolt XB12R RM '05. Then, do the events below using each bike in turn.
     12.Supersports 600Specific Racing bikes under 650cc
14.Master Of EaglesBuell Firebolt XB12R RM only
  10. If you haven't yet acquired your Super license, do so now. Then, go to Challenge Mode and win a BMW Motorrad K1200R RM '05 and a Ducati 999R RM '05. Then, do the first event using the BMW and do the last 2 events using the Ducati.

     13.Superbike 1000Racing bikes under 1000cc
     18.Euro Star SeriesEuropean Racing bikes
  11. At this stage, 100% game completion is basically just a matter of making sure that all races in Race Events are Gold, and then going to Challenge Mode to win all of the challenges that haven't already been won.

Arcade Mode

Arcade mode includes the 4 modes shown below. For the second column, the text in italic is from the in-game text.

1-On-1"Race 1-on-1 with your opponents using a variety of road bikes." If you're in Arcade Mode to learn the tracks, this is probably the best mode to do it in. After a race, the program will automatically start Replay mode. While in Replay, you can press [Up]/[Down] to switch riders, and you can press [X] to change the camera view. You can toggle the HUD by pressing [Square]. Your opponent will be on a similar bike, so driving lines and braking points will also be similar. If you're unfamiliar with the bike and/or track, you should be able to pick up some tips from the AI rider.
Race"Race using the racing bikes you have always dreamt of riding!" If you're in Arcade Mode to practice for Tourist Trophy mode, this might be the best mode to do it in since the racing here is very similar. The mode itself is similar to 1-On-1 except that you race against 3 opponents (instead of 1) and your choice of bikes is limited to Racing bikes (instead of Road bikes).
Time Trial   "The track is yours and open for time attacks. A ghost image of the fastest lap can also be displayed." This mode is ideal for testing and comparing bikes of the same class. The Rankings screen shows the 10 best lap times so you don't have to keep track of them yourself. Note that, although the second sentence of the in-game text seems to suggest that the ghost is optional, it's not; as far as I can tell, there is no way to turn off the ghost.
2-Player"Compete against another player using a split-screen display." This mode is similar to 1-On-1 except that your opponent is another human rider instead of an AI one. It's also similar to Race mode in that the choice of bikes is limited to Racing bikes. The screen is split into top and bottom halves, with Player 1 using the top half.

In all 4 modes, you start by choosing a track, after which, you'll be asked to choose a bike. Initially, there will be a limited number of bikes and tracks available in each mode:
Initially-Available1-on-1RaceTimeTrial2-Player
  Bikes : 54 23 77 23
  Tracks : 31 31 37 37
As you play through Tourist Trophy mode, the number of bikes available in Arcade Mode will vary. For columns 2-5 of the table below, an 'X' means that the bike is always available in that mode, while a dash (-) means that the bike is never available. A caret (^) means that the bike is initially unavailable but can become available by acquiring the bike in Tourist Trophy mode, in which case, the info in the Acquire column may be useful. Numbers in the Acquire column correspond to
Race Events, while letters refer to Licenses. A single letter represents the license prerequisite to unlock the bike in Challenge Mode, while a letter preceded by "LG" means that the bike can be acquired by earning all Gold medals for that license.

Time Trial

Time Trial is available in both
Arcade Mode and Tourist Trophy Mode. For each track, there is a Rankings table where the 10 best lap times can be viewed. Although the Rankings table is shared between the 2 modes, some other features are not. The table below shows some differences.

Time Trial In Arcade ModeTime Trial In Tourist Trophy Mode
 • This mode is ideal for testing and comparing several bikes on a particular track. • This mode is ideal for testing different setups for a particular bike.
 • There is nothing special that needs to be done prior to entering Arcade Mode's Time Trial. • You enter Tourist Trophy Mode's Time Trial with the bike you're currently using. If you want to use a different bike, you'll need to choose it from your Garage.
 • There will be a fair amount of initially-available bikes to choose from. Additionally, all of the bikes acquired in Tourist Trophy Mode, except the Honda RC162, will also be available. • Your choice of bikes is limited to the ones you've acquired so far. If you've acquired the Honda RC162, this is the only mode that it can be used in.
 • After choosing a track, the second step is to choose a bike and riding gear. • After choosing a track, the second step is to choose either Free Run or Free Battle. For Free Battle, the third step is to choose an opponent.
 • Quick-Tune is available, but settings are not persistent. • The normal tuning options are available, and the settings will be persistent.
 • If you want to save your Rankings, you'll need to return to the Main Menu and do a manual Save, even if Auto-save is On. • If Auto-save is On, your Rankings will be saved automatically when you exit Time Trial and return to the TT World screen.
