Heerlen is part of Parkstad Limburg, this area enclosed the municipality's Kerkrade, Landgraaf, Brunssum, Onderbanken, Nuth, Voerendaal, Simpelveld  and Heerlen.

Despite of the mine industry, whit its important strong influence years ago, is nature one present aspect of Parkstad Limburg.

Heerlen is manifesting as a city of informatica.
Big company's and governmental departments have here its office, such as DSM and ABP, CBS, The Open University, Technical High School, Tax collectors office,  e.a.

Hospitality is a word that belongs to Limburg.
You find it in the many café's with terraces, theaters, restaurants, cinemas and discothèques.

Beside the fairs (spring- and fall) there are annual events for example the "Profronde van Heerlen" (bicycle race) en Tropical.

At the border of Heerlen / Kerkrade there is the brand new Parkstad Stadion the home of soccer club Roda J.C.
In the area of the house there are  soccer clubs NEC`92, Helios, V.V. Heksenberg, Groene Ster, V.V. Langenberg.

Also very popular is the "meubelboulevard" of Heerlen, you find everything concerning furniture and domestic decoration.
