On the 11th, 12th and 13th of June 2010 there will be the first Hang meeting in the Netherlands. It’s organised by Hang player Rob Verheul at Atelier dell’ Arte in Wapserveen. Join this event and meet other enthusiastic players! Share your skills and learn some new moves.

The Hang

For those who aren’t familiar with the Hang, (hang means ‘hand’ in Berns dialect) it’s a handcrafted melodic percussion instrument, made out of two metal shells. It was first presented in the year 2000 by Sabine Schrärer en Felix Rohner from PANArt in Bern (Swiss) .

Central on the top shell is the base note, called the Ding, surrounded by 7 different tones.

It’s tuning can not be changed. It is therefore a big challenge for the hang player to create compositions within the range of these 8 tones. The bottom shell has a sound-hole curved inwards called the Gu. This side of the instrument can be played like an Udu-drum.

The characteristics of every hang is the constant producing of overtones. These overtones create a ‘drone’ or bourdon effect, a beautiful spherical  long-lasting sound field. This in contrast with visual aspects of hitting the notes very shortly. It’s almost unbelievable that the variety of sounds comes out of one single instrument!

From it’s birth in 2000, the hang is improved in sound and materials within every generation. March 2008 PANArt released the 4e generation hang. Until now, they are the only firm in the world that produces and sells the Hang. PANArt produces in a very limited amount and only with collaboration of the buyer.

Note; The sound frequencies have, according to the makers, a healthy influence on our hart coherency, also due to the repeating rhythmic patterns played on the instrument.

Hang uut Holland 2010

Hang-uut Holland’ is a gathering of hang players from all over Europe. The first 2 days, the 11th and 12th of June, are planned to connect and exchange playing techniques, explore (new) compositions and other hang experiences.

During this meeting you can join a workshop by Jeff Hijlkema (musician,  composer and music teacher) and Rob Verheul (musician, composer and percussionist ) Subjects are; harmonics, left and right hand playing techniques and polyrhythmic. Arno Staal, part-time hang player, gemstone therapist, palm reader and life-artist, will give a short lecture about the energetic effects on the player and the audience. Outside the programme there will be lots of space for fun jamming and making new hang friends.

Note! There will be only hang-music and no other instruments.

Because of the small scaled happening, the amount of participants will be limited to 20 hang players!! So don’t wait too long. Please inform us what kind of hang you are playing (tuning and name of the actual tones)

The early birds won’t have any problem getting there sleep because the late players can make use of our new studio, in a separated building.

Nature lovers can enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Atelier dell’ Arte, Wapserveen by foot or pushbike.

On June 13th, there will be a concert in the local church. You can perform as an individual or be part of a group. The acoustics is perfect! We’ll play non-amplified and pure as it is, because this will bring out the best of the hang. The concert will be accessible for public and starts at 14.00 pm

The “Hang-uut”, Holland, will start on Friday 11th of June around 17.00 pm and will continue until the last one leaves on Sunday night the 13th.
