Josias Rantzau (1609-1650)

A great adventurer, from a young age. He ran away from home,and served under William of Orange.

In 1627 he studied in Leiden. After service in Danish and Swedish armies he took part in the storm on Mantua.

He was governor of Strasbourg and Rotenburg. He lost his right eye during the siege of Dole. While laying for Arras, he lost a leg and an arm. In 1645 he became Marechal de France and became governor of Dunkirk in 1646.
