Nature is especially vulnerable on islands. Therefore their ecology has
to be protected.
This site leads
to the
Library of environmental resources, and is a good starting point when looking for issues on
ecologically sound preservation of nature.
Obviously, oceanic islands are rich in coastal and marine resources such as
coral reefs.
This page is an introduction to many
more links on these issues.
Because of their isolated location, many
oceanic islands have special (so called 'endemic')
birds and plants. Darwin noticed this on his sea
voyage with the HMS Beagle through the Pacific,
where he, amongst other beautifull spots, visited the
Galapagos Islands. Most of us ar not so lucky to
be able to visit this spot, so we will
have to do with the the (electronic versions) of
such as 'The voyage of the Beagle' and 'The Origin of Species'.
or with a cybervisit to
'virtual
Galapagos'
