BookTV had dit weekend een presentatie van een ander boek over hetzelfde onderwerp, door Cassandra Pybus, hoogleraar geschiedenis uit Australie. Interessant hoe dit taboe-onderwerp hier op de kaart gezet wordt door niet-Amerikanen. << |

BookTV had another presentation on a book about the same subject this weekend, by Cassandra Pybus, a history professor from Australia. Interesting how this taboo topic in the US is put on the map by no-Americans. << |
| Op 12 mei vertrekken we naar Almaty, Kazakhstan. Lynne Kocen werkt hier voor de American Bar Association's Central and Eastern European Legal Initiative. Zij organiseert een conferentie voor rechters in Centraal Azie over witwaspraktijken en hun rechterlijke gevolgen. Nadat ik Nederlandse rechters had voorgedragen kwam er toch nog een email of ik het niet zelf wilde doen. Dat werd studeren. Een verhaal, en een presentatie die allebei in het Russisch vertaald moesten worden. << | |
On May 12, we leave for Almaty, Kazakhstan. Lynne Kocen works for the American Bar Association's Central and Eastern European Legal Initiative here. She organizes a judicial conference for Central Asia on money laundering and its ramifications for the judiciary. After I had proposed Dutch judges, came the request if I would do the presentation myself. That required some research. A paper and a presentation that both needed to be translated into Russian. << |

Op zondagmorgen zijn we heel vroeg wakker, en maken een foto van het uitzicht uit de 24e verdieping van hotel Kazakhstan, een echt oude sovjethotel. Later op de dag maken we met Lynne en Marc een wandeling en hangen wat rond op een terras. << | |
There is a ten hour time difference between Washington and Almaty. We wake up really early on Sunday morning, and take a picture of the view from the 24th floor of the Kazakhstan hotel, en true old soviet hotel. Later in the day, we go for a walk with Lynne and Marc and hang out on a terrace. << |

| Wim blijft nog in Almaty, maar ik moet meteen weer terug. Lufthansa sponsort de wereldkampioenschappen voetbal. In het vliegtuig wordt Das Wunder von Bern vertoond. In de lounge in Frankfurt serveren ze koekjes in de vorm van voetballetjes en de servetjes hebben passende opdruk. << | |

| Terug in Washington gaat het meteen los: De Bank/Fund Choral Society zingt drie keer Carl Orffs Carmina Burana, een mooie bak herrie. Daar hebben we maanden hard aan gewerkt. Mijn groep houdt een retraite met goede conclusies. En tenslotte komt Amartya Sen zijn nieuwe boek, Identity and Violence, presenteren. Hij heeft een Nobelprijs voor economie, en eenentachtig eredoctoraten. | |
Back in Washington, there is action right away. The Bank/Fund Choral Society gives three performances of Carl Orffs Carmina Burana, a wonderful big noise that took months of hard work. My group holds a retreat with good conclusions. And finally, Amartya Sen presents his new book on Identity and violence. He holds a Nobel Prize for economy and eighty-one honorary doctorates. |
