Things we need...

As you have seen it is very well posible to create a connection between a Psion and your computer running OS/2 or eComStation. Also, there are utilities to convert some native Psion file-formats to formats that can be used by OS/2 software. But there are still some important features lacking. If these could be added the Psion to OS/2 connection could be very much 'business-proof'!
On this page you will find a list of whishes that I would like to see fulfilled in the near future. Let me know by email if you would like to add your own wishes to the list, or if you know a solution for a function that is listed here as missing (use the 'mailto' tag at the bottum of this page).

Subject Psion Agenda
Problem We can rely on Personal Information Managers like Lotus Organizer for OS/2 or the equivalent StarOffice application but we cannot sync it with the Psion agenda. In fact it is not even possible to view data from the Psion Agenda on the OS/2 desktop because this EPOC application cannot export it's data to a file format that could be used by another application. A major drawback for everyone who relies on OS/2 or eCS for running his or her busines.
Possible solutions
  • A Java-based sync-utility for Lotus Organizer for OS/2 (*.OR4) and StarOffice which is available for several 'alternative' operating systems;
  • A utility that could convert the Psion's Agenda database to *.dbf or delimited ASCII so it can be imported into Lotus Organizer;
  • A Java, OS/2 or DOS-based application that emulates Psion's Agenda on our desktop, using a copy of the Agenda's database.

Subject Psion Contacts
Problem Allthough the Contacts application is capable of exporting data, it can do this only in vCard format that -as fas as I know- is not supported by any OS/2 application.
Possible solutions
  • A Java-based sync-utility for Lotus Organizer for OS/2 (*.OR4) and StarOffice which is available for several 'alternative' operating systems;
  • A utility that could convert the vCard format to *.dbf or delimited ASCII.
Some answers: There is a freeware utility available for EPOC based Psion's that is able to convert the vCard format to comma- or tab-delimited ASCII. See the 'useful utilities page' for details.

Subject Psion Word
Problem Even third party utilities like nConvert or X-Converter do not allow us to export a file made with Psion Word to the major OS/2 wordprocessors (Lotus WordPro, StarWriter). The same problem occurs when we want to use a text, written with an OS/2 wordprocessor, on the Psion. This means that text has to be converted using a file-format that is supported on both platforms. More complicated layouts will always be corrupted when converting using RTF or HTML
Possible solutions
  • Conversion filters for Lotus WordPro and StarOffice.

Subject IrDa support for OS/2 and eComStation
Problem OS/2 Warp 4 has support for infrared devices using IrDA 1.0 (although the implementation is said to be flaky). Until now it looks as if this option is no longer availble in its successor, eComStation. Now almost everyone uses PDA's, mobile telephones and laptops that are ready to communicate using the IrDA standard. Even the majority of mainboards in our desktop computers can accept an infrared module. If eComStation is to be the choice of a 'connected generation' it definitly needs IrDA support!
Possible solutions
  • Give us state-of-the-art infrared support for eComStation and OS/2 Warp! This also implies IrCOMM support to assign a virtual COM-port to connect with IrDA devices like the Psion (I know there are beta-drivers out there for use with IBM Thinkpad laptop computers, so it should be possible for all of us!).
Some answers Good news! A spokesman from Mensys told me that IrDa support will be included in eComStation!
