Bee-flies (Diptera: Bombyliidae) of Northwest Europe

Mark van Veen

The Bombyliidae form a relatively small family in Northwest Europe, but the number of species explodes at the Mediterranean.

The species form 3 morphological groups in Northwest Europe:

  1. Densily, long haired species with a long proboscis;
  2. Shortly haired species, with hyaline wings or with darkened wings, proboscis short;
  3. Very small flies, with short proboscis and an abarrant wing venation (Glabellula).
