Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Once won, the Honda S2000 can't be sold to remove it from the garage.
  • Once won, the Chrysler Team Oreca Viper can't be sold to remove it from the garage.
  • Value of Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex Shigeno version is 125,000 (should be 12,500?).
  • In Spider&Roadster Races, Motor Sport Elise can't be entered but is part of the competition.
The Good
  • Works with the Logitech Driving Force steering wheel.
  • Lots of nice collectable cars.
  • Lots of tuning options.
  • Lots and lots of hours of gameplay.

The Cars

Car List

In the list below, the two cars marked with 3 exclamation marks (!!!) are cars that can't be sold once they've been won; if you want total control over your garage, avoid winning those cars unless you're going for 100% game completion. Besides not being able to sell the two cars, it's also impossible to buy them using the Trade feature.

For the Type column, the format is Drive, Aspiration. The Aspiration info is from the Garage list and indicates the aspiration of a stock (unmodified) car. Note that most NA cars can be fitted with a Turbo Kit which temporarily makes it a Turbo car; however, it will still show up as "NA" in the Garage list.
Drive:  Aspiration:
    4WD4-Wheel Drive      NNatural/Normal
    FFFront-engined, Front-wheel drive      SSupercharger
    FRFront-engined, Rear-wheel drive      TTurbo
    MRMid-engined, Rear-wheel drive
    RRRear-engined, Rear-wheel drive

For the BHP column, the first power rating is for the car in stock state while the second is for the car when fully upgraded. If a car is available in both dealer and prize versions, the ratings shown are for the dealer version. When comparing cars, keep in mind that a prize car starts out in
broken-in state while a dealer car will have to be driven 300km before it reaches that point. For a fair comparison, add 3% to the power rating of a dealer car before comparing it with a car that's only available in prize version. Kg is the car's weight in kilograms. PWR is the Power-to-Weight Ratio.

The EC rating is my own crude attempt at measuring a car's performance and should not be seen as any kind of accurate measurement. EC values of 24 or less are the time (in minutes) that it takes to complete the first 4 races of the 5-race European Championship (A3). EC values of 30 or more are the time (in seconds) of the car's fastest lap at Laguna Seca minus 1 minute (e.g., 32 means a fastest lap time of 1:32). There are no cars with EC ratings of 25-29 because a car that can do a lap at Laguna Seca in less than 1:30 can also win the European Championship and will therefore have an EC rating of 24 or less. In the list below, the first EC rating is for the car in stock state while the second is for the car when fully upgraded. Keep in mind that cars that perform well in the European Championship or at Laguna Seca may not necessarily perform as well in other events or on other tracks, and that cars may perform better or worse depending on various things like tuning, tires, etc.. As always with these types of ratings, your mileage may vary.

For the Acquire column, 'D' means that the car can be bought from a Dealer; anything else means the car is a prize for an event or other achievement. For prize cars, the format will usually be a letter representing a league and a number representing the race series. Leagues are: B(eginner), A(mateur), P(rofessional), R(ally), and E(ndurance). Two other letters used are: C(ompletion), and L(icense). 'C' will either be followed by a number representing the percentage of game completion that you'll need to reach, or a letter representing the league which you'll need to complete. For 'L', the letters that follow are the license tests for which you'll need all gold medals.

For a list of some of the available colors, see the GameSaves page.

Car Name Differences

If you're running a different version (or language) of GT3, the list below may help you identify some names that you may not be familiar with.

Power Fluctuations

If you regularly check your cars' power ratings, you will have noticed that the ratings fluctuate as the cars get used. This section will try to explain how mileage and oil changes play a role in those fluctuations.
Starter Cars

Starting out in Gran Turismo Mode, you're initially given Cr.18,000. The list below shows the cars that can be bought for under that price. Of the 12 cars listed, only 11 are available from a Dealer; the Mini Cooper is only available if you have it on another gamesave (in which case, you'd buy it using the Trade feature).

Best Cars - Non-Tuned

The list below gives an overview of some of the best cars in near stock form. All of these are capable of winning the Trial Mountain Endurance and Polyphony Digital Cup; all have been tested with SuperHard/SuperHard Racing tires, fresh oil, and ASM set to 5. The TM rating, like the EC rating, is only meant to give a general idea of a car's performance and should not be seen as any kind of accurate measurement. The 'd' or 'p' postfix indicates whether the rating is for the dealer or prize version.

In the list below, Stint is an approximate amount for the Trial Mountain Endurance and may vary depending on driving style and personal preference. Cars that can do stints of 19 or more laps at Trial Mountain can also do most or all of the PD Cup races without pitting. For the Notes column, "Gears short" means that the car has good acceleration but may "top out" too early on long straights. "Gears wide" means that the car has good topspeed (if the straight is long enough) but acceleration may be slow. "Front heavy" means that the front tires wear much faster than the rear tires; in which case, you may get better performance by fitting softer (Hard or Medium Hard) rear tires. "Rear heavy" means that the rear tires wear much faster than the front tires; in which case, you may get better handling with softer front tires.

For the Trial Mountain Endurance, the main rival will usually be an NSX Type S Zero that does 5-lap stints with average lap times of about 1:35 or a Mazda RX-7 Type RZ that does 23-lap stints with average lap times of about 1:40. To beat the NSX on pitstop strategy, a car will need to do much longer stints with average lap times of 1:38 or faster, or slightly longer stints with average lap times equal to or faster than 1:35. To beat the RX-7, a car will need to do longer stints while matching its lap times, or be fast enough to make up for shorter stints. If you're using a TM35 or slower car and you want an easier go of it, I'd recommend choosing an alternate grid line-up that doesn't include the NSX or RX-7. With the NSX and RX-7 absent from the line-up, the main rivals will be a Skyline GT-R V-spec II R34 and Supra RZ. The Skyline is the fastest of the two but does very short 4-lap stints which puts it out of contention after about 12 laps. The remaining rival is then a Supra that does stints of 15 laps with average times of about 1:40. Since the main rivals will usually do around 71-74 laps in the 2 hours, a car that can do 37 laps per stint only needs to stop once. For other cars, the following table may be useful:
Pitstop Strategy1st stop2nd stop3rd stop4th stop5th stop6th stop
  2 stops / 3 stintslap 25lap 50----
  3 stops / 4 stintslap 19lap 38lap 57---
  4 stops / 5 stintslap 15lap 30lap 45lap 60--
  5 stops / 6 stintslap 13lap 26lap 39lap 52lap 65-
  6 stops / 7 stintslap 11lap 22lap 33lap 44lap 55lap 66

For the Polyphony Digital Cup, the main rival will usually be a Nissan Z Concept that does stints of 5-7 laps or an NSX Type S Zero that does stints of 5-6 laps. If you're using a TM35 or slower car and you want an easier go of it, I'd recommend choosing an alternate grid line-up that doesn't include the Z or NSX. With the Z and NSX absent from the line-up, the main rival will usually be a Supra RZ that does stints of 5-7 laps. Sometimes, the line-up may also include a Skyline GT-R V-spec II R34 that does stints of 4-5 laps and/or an Elise 190 that does stints of 17-20 laps. The Skyline R34 is fast but its short stints make it only slightly more competitive than the Supra. The Elise is relatively slow but it'll usually finish ahead of the others due to its longer stints.

Vauxhall / Opel

If you're running a European (EU/PAL) version of GT3, it's possible to have both Vauxhall and Opel cars on the same gamesave. This probably won't be of much interest to most but, for avid car collectors, the steps below describe how to get the 3 Opel versions of the Vauxhall cars. You'll need an extra memory card (one that doesn't already have a GT3 gamesave on it) for this. You'll also need a quick way to add credits to a new gamesave (Step 4). The steps below assume that your main gamesave is English and you're using a German gamesave to get the 3 Opels; if you're more fluent in French, Italian, or Spanish, then use that language instead. If your main gamesave is non-English and you want the Vauxhall cars, you'll need to replace "German" with "English" and vice versa in the text below.
  1. Start GT3 with the extra memory card in slot 1.
  2. At the Language Selection screen, choose Deutsch (German).
  3. Save the game.
  4. If you have a GT Concept gamesave that has Bonus #3 unlocked, use Shortcut 2 to add credits and licenses to your new German gamesave. Or, if you have Action Replay or other cheat system, use that instead.
  5. Start GT3 with the German gamesave.
  6. Use the Trade feature to buy a Polyphony 001 or 002 from your main (English) gamesave. If you want to avoid pitstops, buy an EC20 car fitted with Super Hard tires instead.
  7. Buy the Opel Speedster from the Car Dealer.
  8. Use the "Choose Your Prize" technique to win the Opel Astra Touring Car in the Amateur DTM championship (A5).
  9. Use the "Choose Your Prize" technique to win the Opel Calibra Touring Car in the Professional GT World championship (P2).
  10. At this stage, you can either upgrade the 3 cars and then Save the game, or just Save the game without upgrading the cars.
  11. Now restart GT3 with your English gamesave (or Load it from the Startup Menu), and then use the Trade feature to buy the 3 Opel cars from your German gamesave.

Arcade Mode - Single Race

The tracks in Arcade Mode are grouped into Areas. Completing an Area at Easy level will unlock the next Area. Completing an Area at Normal or Hard level will unlock other Bonus Items; unlocked cars will then be available in Single Race and
Free Run. Completing all 6 Areas at Hard level counts for about 19.4% game completion.

The two most common reasons for doing Arcade Mode > Single Race are probably: (1) to learn the cars and tracks, or (2) for game completion. If your goal is to learn the cars and tracks, I'd recommend starting with the Class C cars listed below until you know the tracks fairly well. Note that the cars are listed in the order that they appear in Car Selection and not necessarily sorted from best to worst or vice versa. Cars marked with an asterisk (*) are not initially available but will need to be unlocked first.

If your goal is to reach 100% game completion, a quick way to get through Arcade Mode > Single Race is to skip the first two levels (Easy and Normal) and just do Hard using cars from your Home garage. The best choices are probably a Polyphony 001|002 for the tarmac tracks and a Suzuki Escudo for the dirt tracks. A few alternatives that also work well are listed below. For the cars recommended for tarmac tracks, you can fit non-power upgrades and do some basic tuning, but any upgrades that increase a car's power will need to be uninstalled since they'll most likely put the car in a class that it isn't really competitive enough for. Oil changes should also be avoided since they also increase a car's power. For the cars recommended for dirt tracks, however, the maximum power kit should be installed.

Arcade Mode - Time Attack

The goal here is to beat the Gold time using a specific car on a specific track. If you want to practice beforehand, you can do so in
Free Run. Most of the test cars will be available; the exceptions are the Lotus Motorsport Elise (which can be bought in Gran Turismo Mode and then selected via "Home Garage") and possibly the RUF RGT (which is available only if Area E has been completed at Normal level in Single Race). For game completion percentage, beating the Gold times on all 10 tracks counts for about 2%.

Gran Turismo Mode - License Centre

Although Gold and Silver are listed in the tables below, Bronze is sufficient to complete a license test. For game completion percentage, completing all of the license tests (i.e., acquiring all licenses) counts for about 9.1%.

Domestic Licenses: The B and A license tests provide a good introduction to driving techniques; they're the only ones that show the racing line and brake/acceleration points. Of the 20 events in Beginner League, 7 require a B license and 1 (the final event) requires an A license.

Special License: The S license is required to complete the final 4 events of Professional League. The S license tests are all full circuit tests. If you want to practice beforehand, Arcade Mode > Free Run is the ideal place for this. Cars marked with an asterisk (*) are available in Arcade Mode; all others can either be bought or won. For the latter, I'd recommend leaving the cars in their stock state so that practice conditions are as close as possible to the actual License Test conditions. Note that, although the Pennzoil Nismo (S-4) isn't available in Arcade Mode, two very similar cars that are available are the Calsonic Skyline and Loctite Zexel.

Gran Turismo Mode - Go Race

For the League column, an asterisk (*) means that rules apply; for all others, there are no restrictions other than the required license (shown in parentheses). For the Races column, "Rev." is short for Reverse, and the number in parentheses is the number of laps unless 'H' (hours) is appended. Numbered races are part of a Championship, while bullets denote Single Races. For the Prize column where multiple cars are listed, only one of the cars is awarded at a time; to win all of the cars listed, you'll need to do the event multiple times. Cars and colors are randomly awarded. Also, the prize for completing a Single Race series is only awarded once.

Recommended Cars

For most of Beginner League and some of Amateur League, it's assumed that you don't yet have many cars in your Garage and that you have a limited amount of credits in the kitty. For all other events, it's assumed that you already have the means to easily earn credits and win cars. For events marked with an exclamation mark (!), see the "Rival Cars" note in the
Miscellaneous Gameplay section.

For the Special Stage Route 5 wet races in Rally League, I'd recommend using Super Soft Racing tires. For all other events where tire wear is implemented, I'd recommend using Hard or Super Hard Racing tires. In general, events where all of the races are 5 or more laps will usually implement tire wear. For events with shorter races where tire wear isn't implemented, I'd recommend using the softest tires that you've bought for the car.

Gameplay

Getting Started - First Time

These notes assume that you're completely new to Gran Turismo 3, and that you don't yet have a GT3 gamesave on another memory card. If you do have another card with a GT3 gamesave, see
Shortcut 1.
  1. If you're completely new to the Gran Turismo series, I'd recommend starting in Arcade Mode > Single Race. After each race, there will be a Replay. A good way to learn the tracks is by watching the lead AI driver's racing line and brake/acceleration points. If you don't see any onscreen info, press the [START] button, then select REPLAY OPTION, and then select all 7 icons in the ITEM section. You can then CONTINUE the Replay, then use the [Up]/[Down] buttons to select the lead AI driver, and then press [X] for the cockpit view. I'd recommend spending at least a few hours in Single Race; the experience will make Gran Turismo Mode much easier. Try a few different cars and try to unlock a few other Areas. When you think you're ready, you can exit Arcade Mode and enter Gran Turismo Mode.
  2. The main screen in Gran Turismo Mode shows various icons on a map. You can get a general idea of what this mode includes by moving the pointer over each icon; the scrolling text near the bottom of the screen will show a short description. Your Home menu includes 6 items, one of which is the "Save Game" option. Save the game now, and then read the "Play It Safe" note in Miscellaneous Gameplay for an explanation of why. If you want to reload the last saved gamestate, you can do so by exiting Gran Turismo Mode, and then choosing "Load Game" from the Startup menu. In the following steps, whenever it says to buy a car and/or upgrades, it may be a good idea to save the game before doing so.
  3. Starting out, you have a choice of 11 starter cars for under Cr.18,000. Go to Car Dealer > JPN > Suzuki and buy an Alto Works for Cr.12,220. With the remaining credits, go to Tune Shop and buy a Racing Chip (Engine section, Cr.1,000) and Turbo/Stage1 (Turbo section, Cr.4,500). Then, go to GT Auto and buy an Oil Change (Cr.250). Now, go to Go Race > Beginner League > Lightweight K Cup (B7 event) and do the Super Speedway race (B7.2) to earn your first credits. Since this race is so easy and awards Cr.2,500 for a win, you can use it as your current 'money maker' whenever you need more credits. At this stage, however, I wouldn't recommend spending too much time on the other 2 races in the LK Cup since the Alto isn't really competitive enough yet, and I wouldn't recommend buying any more upgrades just yet since they'll be much easier to afford when you have a better 'money maker' later. For now, just redo the same race a few more times, or until it starts to get boring.
  4. In its current state, your Alto should be competitive enough to win all 3 races of the Sunday Cup (B1). If you have any trouble winning any of them, remember that you can watch the replay (see Step 1) to hone your skills. Keep trying until you win a Toyota Sprinter Trueno, or until you get tired of trying. If you decide to give up on the Sunday Cup, skip to Step 8.
  5. If you don't yet have at least Cr.13,750, use your Alto to keep doing the B7.2 'money maker' (see Step 3) until you do. Then, go to your Garage, change to the Sprinter Trueno, and then upgrade it with a Racing Chip (Cr.1,000), Turbo/Stage2 (Cr.12,500), and Oil Change (Cr.250). Then, use it to win all 3 races of the Clubman Cup (B2). This will be considerably harder than the Sunday Cup, but keep trying until you win the prize car (a Mazda MX-5 1839cc), or until you get tired of trying. If you decide to give up on the Clubman Cup, skip to Step 8. Otherwise, you can also try the 3 races of the FR Challenge (B4), but winning them isn't important at this stage.
  6. Since there aren't any other new events that don't require a license, now would be a good time to get one. Go to License Centre > Domestic B and try to win at least a Bronze medal for each of the 8 tests. Keep trying until you get your B license, or until you get tired of trying. If you decide to give up on getting a license, skip to Step 8.
  7. Enter the Race for Turbo Sports Models event (B12) and try the Rev. Midfield race (B12.1) at least a few times. Once you've gained enough experience to easily win this race, you can use it as your new 'money maker' to earn Cr.5,000 in about the same amount of time as it takes to earn Cr.2,500 in the B7.2 'money maker'. If you want an easier go of it, you can upgrade your Mazda MX-5 and use that instead; in which case, you'll need Cr.13,750 to upgrade the MX-5 with a Racing Chip (Cr.1,000), Turbo/Stage2 (Cr.12,500), and Oil Change (Cr.250).
  8. Keep doing your best 'money maker' until you have at least Cr.35,610. Once you have at least that amount, buy a Honda Integra Type R 98 spec (Cr.25,160) and upgrade it with a Transmission/Full-Racing (Cr.10,200) and Oil Change (Cr.250). Then, enter the Type-R Meeting (B17). Be sure to choose SERIES RACE and not an individual track. At the Race menu, press the SETTING icon, and then go to Settings > 3rd page > Gear Ratio. Scroll to the Auto Setting and set the Level to 18 (-3 from the default). Then, go to the 5th gear setting and press [Left] until the slider won't go any further (should stop at 1.233). Do the same with the 6th gear setting (should stop at 0.980). Then, press the OK button at the bottom of the screen. You can then return to the Race menu and do a qualifying session to get a feel for the car and track. If you already know the other tracks, you can skip qualifying for the rest of the championship. The prize for winning this event is an Acura RSX Type-S that can be sold for Cr.75,000. You now have a new 'money maker' that will earn you Cr.110,000 (assuming you sell the RSX prize car) in about half an hour. If you want to get through it quicker/easier, you can buy more upgrades; just remember to re-tune the car accordingly. The Integra can also be used for the FF Challenge (B3), Race for NA Sports Models (B11), and Race for Turbo Sports Models (B12, if fitted with a Turbo kit). When fully-upgraded, the Integra can even be used for a few events in Amateur League later.
  9. Now that you have a fairly good 'money maker', you can easily afford to upgrade your cars and/or buy new cars and upgrade those for any unfinished events. For the Lightweight K Cup (B7), upgrading the Alto with a Turbo/Stage2 (Cr.12,500) should suffice. Whenever you consider buying an upgrade, it's a good idea to also consider whether it's worth the price. For example, you could upgrade the Alto with a Turbo/Stage3 (Cr.40,000) to make it competitive enough for the 4WD Challenge (B6), but a better option would be to buy a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI RS (Cr.25,980) or Evo VII RS (Cr.25,180). Not only is the Evo less expensive, it's also more useful for later on. For a list of other cars that may be worth buying and/or upgrading, see Recommended Cars. At some point, when you run out of events that you're currently eligible for, a new license may be needed before you can continue any further. Whenever you acquire a new license, check the "Good Cars First" note in Miscellaneous Gameplay for a list of events that may be worth doing. Also, for any car that you use a lot, it may be a good idea to change the oil periodically (every 200km or so).

Getting Started - Shortcut 1

These notes assume that you have at least one other GT3 gamesave that you can buy a
fully-upgraded starter car from. There are 5 variations (for various skill levels) described here; while the first assumes that you're fairly new to GT3, the others assume that you're familiar with all of the tracks and you know how to tune a car to make it more competitive. These notes also assume that you're starting with an initial Cr.18,000. If you have a Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo-Geneva gamesave that has Bonus #3 unlocked, see Shortcut 2. The variation headings below are in the format "Shortcut 1x (difficulty) - starting license, starter car, first event".
Getting Started - Shortcut 2

These notes assume that you have a
Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo-Geneva gamesave that has Bonus #3 unlocked. You can use GTC's Bonus #3 for an existing GT3 gamesave, but it probably won't be as useful if you already have lots of credits and all licenses. The notes below assume that you're starting a new GT3 gamesave.
  1. Start GT3 with a memory card that doesn't already have a GT3 gamesave on it.
  2. Save the game to this 'new' memory card. We'll call this the New GT3 MC.
  3. Now start GT Concept with the memory card that has Bonus #3 unlocked and place the New GT3 MC in MC slot 2.
  4. Go to Game Status, and select Bonus #3 (the third gift box icon). Now you just need to select the memory card that your new GT3 gamesave is on (New GT3 MC in slot 2).
  5. Now place the New GT3 MC in slot 1 and start GT3. If all went well, you should have 48 Bronze License medals and Cr.10,018,000 in the kitty.
  6. Use the Trade feature to buy your favorite upgraded cars from other GT3 gamesaves, or buy new stock ones from a Dealer.

Restarting - For Endurance Fans

These notes assume that you've already played through GT3 several times and you want to start a new gamesave focusing mainly on the Endurance Races. These notes also assume that you have at least one other GT3 gamesave that can serve as a
Garage Gamesave; in the text below, whenever it says "buy" a car, it means "use the Trade feature to buy the car".
  1. Get your B, A, IB, IA, and S licenses. This should take about 2 hours, assuming you've already passed all of the license tests a few times before and assuming you're starting from scratch. If you're starting a new gamesave using Shortcut 2, you can skip the next step and move on to Step 3.
  2. Buy a Mazda MX-5 1839cc (Cr.16,900) or 1597cc (Cr.17,000) in either semi-upgraded or fully-upgraded state, keeping in mind that a fully-upgraded MX-5 isn't eligible for the Roadster Endurance. If the car doesn't already include an Oil Change, use the remaining credits to buy one. Then, do one or more of these:
      E2. Seattle 100 Miles     E4. Rome 2 Hours     E7. Roadster Endurance     E10. Super Speedway 150
    Miscellaneous notes for Step 2:
    • For the Roadster Endurance, if you're using a 1597cc, I'd recommend SuperHard/Hard tires (instead of SuperHard/SuperHard) since the rear tires won't wear as quickly as the front. For the 1839cc, I'd recommend the usual SuperHard/SuperHard. For either car, I'd go with a 1-stop pit strategy.
    • For the Rome 2-Hour and Super Speedway 150, a fully-upgraded 1597cc or 1839cc is preferable but a semi-upgraded one will suffice as long as it's tuned properly. For both cars and both races, I'd recommend fitting the usual SuperHard/SuperHard tires and going with a 3-stop strategy (30-min. stints for Rome, 25-lap stints for Super Speedway).
    • For the Seattle 100, as in Rome and Super Speedway, a fully-upgraded MX-5 is preferable but a well-tuned semi-upgraded one will suffice. Here again, I'd recommend the usual SuperHard/SuperHard tires and, as in the Roadster race, going with a 1-stop strategy.
  3. The choice of which events to do next depends on which cars you have so far. The first list below shows all of the Endurance Races and the cars that can be won there; the second list shows some of the events that those cars can be used for. Professional (Pn) and Amateur (An) events are listed in Step 4.

    Miscellaneous notes for Step 3:
Route 11 and Mistral (E6 and E9). Although an EC20 or faster car is recommended, there are a few EC21 cars that are also capable of winning these events. If you haven't yet won a suitable car, you can buy one; two cars I'd recommend are the Tommykaira ZZ II (Cr.500,000) and Mitsubishi FTO LM (Cr.750,000), but others may also be suitable. Another option is to do either the Dream Car Championship (P19) or Polyphony Digital Cup (P20) and use the "Choose Your Prize" technique to win either a Toyota GT-One Race Car (if you like longer stints) or a Polyphony 001 (if you don't mind lots of pitstops).
Trial Mountain (E5). If you haven't yet won a suitable car for this event, or if you're just looking for a new car to try, I'd recommend buying one of the ones listed below. For a more complete list of suitable cars, see Best Cars - Non-Tuned.

  4. After you've completed all of the Endurance Races, the choice of what to do next depends mainly on personal preference. One way to proceed is to redo your favorite races using the different cars that can be won or bought. Another way to proceed is to use your favorite cars to do as many events as they're suitable for. If you want a change of pace, some of the Professional League events may also be worth doing. And, as a last resort for the less competitive cars, there's Amateur League.
Professional League Events. The Professional League events below are all long enough to qualify as "mini endurance championships". Each of these includes at least one useful prize car that can't be won in Endurance Races. For the prize cars marked with an asterisk (*), see the lists in Step 3.

For Gran Turismo All Stars (P11), if you're not using a Toyota GT-One Race Car and you want an easier go of it, I'd recommend choosing a grid line-up that doesn't include the Nissan R390 GT1 Race Car. There is also a grid line-up that's easy enough to beat using an EC21 car, but you may need to exit and restart several times to get that line-up.
Amateur League Events. For Endurance prize race cars that are too low-end to compete against other Enduro/Pro race cars, Amateur League may be a better alternative than racing them against road cars in E2, E4, and/or E10. Amateur League also includes a few useful prize cars that can't be won in Endurance Races. For the prize cars marked with an asterisk (*), see the lists in Step 3.

  5. If things start to get a bit boring, it may be because the races have become too easy for your level of skill. The list below includes some info on the cars that will usually be the main rival; if you use a car and setup that's either evenly-matched or less competitive, it may make racing a bit more interesting.

For the unrestricted races, if you're using a recommended car (e.g., an EC21 car where an EC21 car is recommended), you can uninstall any installed power kit and then use the Qualifying session to get an idea of how competitive the car is. You can then choose a power kit according to how much of a challenge you want. An alternative to 'downgrading' a car is to use a 'lesser' car than recommended (e.g., an EC22 car where an EC21 car is recommended).

Miscellaneous Gameplay Notes

'Money Makers'

The events below can be used to earn a fair amount of credits in a fairly short time. The first column is the required license. For the last 3 events (B17, A3, and E10), the amount in the last column assumes that you sell the prize car. Note that all except the last 2 'money makers' are only useful if you're just starting out. The only really good one (as far as I know) is the European Championship (A3); once you've reached the point where you can easily win that, you won't really need any others.

Buying Upgrades

Basic Tuning

The notes below are just very basic ways to make a car a bit more competitive. You can replace parts or change settings by pressing the Setting icon in either Run & Settings or in a Race Menu.

Garage Gamesave

One of the many nice features in Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec is the Trade feature (Home > Trade) which allows you to buy cars from other gamesaves. The
Buying Upgrades section explains how to use it to get free upgrades, and Getting Started - Shortcut 1 explains how to use it to get a headstart on a new gamesave. If you have an extra memory card and you enjoy GT3 enough to want to play it in the future, I'd highly recommend creating a separate Garage gamesave. Ideally, the Garage gamesave should include cars that can't be bought from a Dealer plus any other cars that might be useful for future gameplay. Two cars that should not be included are the Chrysler Viper GTSR Team Oreca (acquired by completing Amateur League) and Honda S2000 (one of the random prize cars in the Amateur League Type-R Meeting) since they can't be bought using the Trade feature. Once you have a Garage gamesave, it can serve pretty much the same purpose as any Dealer but with the added bonus of allowing you to buy cars that aren't normally buyable or upgraded cars for the same price as stock ones.

To create a new Garage gamesave, you'll need an existing gamesave that includes lots of credits (or at least enough to buy the cars that you want to store for future use) plus at least one spare memory card (one that doesn't already include a GT3 gamesave, or one that includes a gamesave that you don't mind overwriting).
  1. Start GT3 with a gamesave that has lots of credits. I'll call this the 'Original gamesave' hereafter.
  2. Sell all of the unwanted cars, and then save the game to the spare memory card. This will be your Garage gamesave.
  3. Reload the Original gamesave, and then resume normal gameplay until you come across a car that you want to add to your Garage gamesave.
  4. Upgrade the new car as much as you like (including an oil change, if you want more power), and then save the game. Optionally, if you have another spare memory card (a third card; not the ones used for the Original or Garage gamesaves), you can use that as Temporary storage.
  5. Reload the Garage gamesave, and then use the Trade feature to buy the new car from your Original gamesave (or from Temporary storage, if you're using 3 cards).
  6. Save the game.
  7. Repeat Steps 3-6 until your Garage gamesave includes all of the cars that you want.
If you have Action Replay, you can use 'Tons Of Cash' to add credits to a newly-created Garage gamesave and 'Cars For A Fiver' (among others) to easily acquire some initial cars. Alternatively, if you have PAL versions of GT3 and Action Replay, you could download ready-made Garages to use as starting points for your own custom versions.

Choosing Your Prize Car

These notes apply to championships only, not single races.
  1. Work your way through a championship until you have enough of a points lead to be able to skip the rest of the races and still win the championship. For example: in a 10-race championship, you can skip the last 3 races if you have a 31-point lead after the 7th race. Alternatively, a 7-point lead after the second to last race would also suffice.
  2. Save the game.
  3. Start and exit out of the last race(s). Be careful to only exit the race(s) and not the championship. Note that, if you're going into the last race with only a 7-point lead, you'll need to start the race and get ahead of your nearest rival before exiting out.
  4. Continue the championship to collect the prize car.
  5. If you don't get the car that you want, just reload the gamesave and repeat the last 2 steps until you do.

Collecting Prize Cars

These notes are meant to save you some time if your goal is to collect prize cars. You'll need at least one spare memory card (one that doesn't already have a GT3 gamesave on it, or one that you don't mind overwriting). Also, your main gamesave (the one that will hold your car collection) needs to have enough credits to buy all of the cars that you want.
