Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • Long load times and the excessive use of confirmation dialogs can get a bit irritating sometimes.
  • Some of the Country courses make this feel more like a game than a simulation.
  • The unpredictable AI riders at the back of the grid can be extremely annoying sometimes.
  • In Career mode, some of the Equipment unlocked in the later stages (e.g., Pro and Veteran) are lesser versions of Equipment unlocked earlier.
  • On the Equipment screen in Career mode, the line near the bottom that usually shows the associated skill (e.g., "Throttle +2") is often missing.
  • The program tends to crash every now and then, forcing a reset of the PS2 console (I've only seen this happen on menu screens, but not during races, so far).
  • In Career mode's Free Ride, only the bikes used in the current season are unlocked. For example, when you enter the Amateur Season, all of the bikes that were unlocked during the Rookie Season that aren't used in the Amateur Season will be locked again. This is bitterly disappointing because you'd normally expect unlocked bikes to stay unlocked. Note, however, that Free Ride in Trophies mode doesn't have this quirk.
The Good
  • Includes two separate simulation modes: one that uses the RPG/Skill system (Career) and one that doesn't (Trophies).
  • Good response to the PS2 game controller.
  • For most races, you're given a choice of bikes to use (unlike SCAR and Evolution GT, where you have no choice).

Events

Super-Bikes Riding Challenge includes two simulation modes: Trophies and Career. These modes are completely separate, and each requires its own rider profile. You can have up to 5 rider profiles per gamesave, so I'd recommend creating one for each of the two modes. You can switch between the two profiles/modes by choosing "Rider Selection" from the Main Menu.

In the tables below, the bikes listed in the first column are the ones you can choose from. For the Races column, the number in parentheses is the number of laps (which may be followed by 'w' meaning Wet).

Trophies Mode

Because of the quirky unlocking system in Career mode (see "Quirks and Features" above), if you want access to all of the unlocked bikes and tracks in Free Ride, you'll need to create a rider profile for Trophies mode. This mode doesn't use the RPG/Skill system, so gameplay is less complicated than in Career mode.

Career Mode

Unlike Trophies mode, Career mode uses the RPG/Skill system. When you create a new rider profile for Career mode, you're initially given 4 free Skill Points and 9 articles of Equipment. It's probably a good idea to assign the 4 points to Cornering, Throttle, Braking, and Drafting (1 point each) before doing any races. Also, you should change your Boots from the default Mig (Intimidation +1) to Resolution Island (Cornering +1).

Career Mode Challenges

Challenges give you the opportunity to increase your Base Skills without having to use up some of those hard-earned Skill Points. This is probably a good place to start, but don't spend too much time here; some of these will be unbeatable until you apply more skills through Skill Points and/or Equipment. Since passing all of the Challenges doesn't unlock any bikes or Equipment, you really only need to do the ones for the Skills that you want to enhance.

SkillBike, Track - Goal

Skills / Rider Tuning

Note: This section applies to Career mode only; the Skill system isn't used in Trophies mode.

As in
SCAR and Evolution GT, there is no machine tuning in Super-Bikes Riding Challenge. Instead, you 'tune' your rider by assigning Skill Points and by changing your Equipment. The Skills are listed below, in order of importance (IMO). When assigning Skill Points, the last 3 are pretty much useless unless you're trying to pass a Challenge (in which case it's probably better to change your Equipment instead of assigning Skill Points).

CorneringImproves the ability to control the bike leaning while cornering.
ThrottleImproves the ability to minimize air drag during acceleration.
BrakingImproves the ability to brake effectively.
DraftingImproves the ability to stay in the slipstream of an opponent.
Will PowerImproves the resistence against the opponents' intimidation.
Fall ControlEnhances the ability to minimize the injuries during a fall.
IntimidationIncreases the rate of intimidation inflicted on opponents.

Skill Points

When you start a new rider profile for Career mode, you're initially given 4 free Skill Points and you'll earn 3 more every time your Player Level increases. Assigning Skill Points is one way to 'tune' your rider. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind: The highest Player Level is 20, so (by my calculations) the maximum amount of Skill Points is 61 (4 free, 57 earned). Asigning Skill Points adds to your Base Skills. Adding to your Base Skills is like adding non-removable upgrades in other racing sims.

Equipment

Known as 'Gear' in SCAR and Evolution GT, Equipment refers to what the rider wears, not mechanical parts. Changing your Equipment is another way to 'tune' your rider, and has pretty much the same effect as adding or removing upgrades in other racing sims. Each article of Equipment has its own skill associated with it.
