Test Drive Unlimited 2

For The PlayStation 3

Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • No way to reconfigure the game controller's button assignments, and having to use the same hand for steering and braking just isn't very intuitive for racing games.
  • The increased amount of RPG elements means that a lot of things (e.g., finding car info or switching to a different car) are much more time-consuming than in TDU1.
  • Championship bonuses can only be won once. This is probably a bug, since the info dialog always shows the bonus, regardless of whether it can be won or not.
  • The ability to easily sell cars is still missing, and you still have to rely on the same workaround as in TDU1. Note: this has been fixed in TDU2 v1.04.
  • No changing weather conditions (other than in a few license tests). This is possibly a bug, since 4 photos require a certain weather. Note: this has been fixed in TDU2 v1.04.
  • Headlights are automatic and tend to turn on too late in the evening and turn off too soon in the morning. Not having manual control over your headlights means that driving at dusk or dawn may be a bit tricky and possibly cause a degree of annoyance.
  • There is a delay of almost 2 seconds before your car actually gets off the starting grid. This can be especially annoying for timed challenges that have goals that are unnecessarily tight (and, arguably, a bit unfair).
  • The various types of Missions have inconsistent properties. For example: some Time Attack missions have Driving meters and some Driving missions have timers. The latter is probably the most annoying because a Driving mission with a timer is essentially a Time Attack but, because of the labeling, you're only awarded $3,000 when you should be getting $5,000. Admittedly, $2,000 isn't much of a loss, but it's the principle that counts.
  • The program doesn't properly handle disc read errors. If you have a scratched or otherwise damaged disc, the program will crash the system, forcing a hard reset. It's possible that the PS3 doesn't have the facilities for proper error checking, or it may just be an oversight on the part of the developers at Eden Games.
  • New messages in Media > News Channel are added to the bottom of the list, so you have to scroll down to read them. Note: this has been fixed in TDU2 v1.04, where the newest messages are at the top of the list.
  • The Ariel Atom 300 Supercharged, when fully-upgraded, makes an annoying sound when it "tops out". This may seem like a minor quirk, but it can really get on your nerves if you can't get used to it. Note: this has been fixed in TDU2 v1.04.
  • Level 60 (the maximum Level possible) requires online gaming. The maximum that can be reached in offline-only gameplay is Level 43 (less than 72% of 60). Note: this has changed in TDU2 v1.04, where 3 more Discovery Levels were added.
The Good
  • The GPS is more intelligent and, in most cases, won't tell you to take one-way roads in the wrong direction (as is often the case in TDU1).
  • The cars in public traffic now use turn signals.
  • The Map includes a Bookmark option, useful for if you want to easily come back to a location later.
  • The accelerated time of day with changing lighting conditions adds a nice touch of realism.
  • Some elements of the game can be enjoyable if you don't have any particular goal in mind (e.g., if you're just driving for the fun of it).

TDU2 v1.04 - Additional Quirks and Features :
The Bad
  • Some of the dealers now include DLC cars and bikes that cost real money before they can be bought with in-game money (see Miscellaneous Notes).
  • The Cup "money-makers" no longer work, and championship bonuses are still only awarded once. If the developers were going to leave the Championship bug unfixed, they should've left the Cup bug as compensation.
  • The goal times for timed challenges stay the same no matter what the weather conditions are. It just doesn't make sense that the competition can post dry weather times even in the worst stormy weather. This basically means that, if the roads are wet, you're often forced to do something else while they dry.
  • Some of the Timed Convoy missions seem extremely unfair, making them unnecessarily difficult. Having timers on convoy missions is just a very bad idea and, in real life, nobody in their right mind would send somebody on a suicide mission and expect their car to arrive at the shop in one piece. Or, for that matter, nobody in real life would ever be crazy or stupid enough to accept such a job. For people who are already annoyed by other irritants in the game, the new missions could very well be the last straw that leaves them swearing that they'll never buy another title from Eden Games ever again.
  • The Ariel Atom 300 Supercharged has been downgraded somewhat. On dirt roads, the car can do about 100 mph in TDU2 v1.00 but only about 75 mph in v1.04. The topspeed for tarmac remains the same, but it's a bit annoying that the developers felt the need to make the car less usable for dirt. It's possible that other cars have also been downgraded for dirt.
  • The sound of the engine will often be incorrect during the first part of a challenge. This appears to be a case of the developers trying to fix something that wasn't broken.
The Good
  • Includes changing weather conditions, so all photos can now be taken.
  • Organizing the cars in your Garages is now much easier, and it's even possible to move cars to empty spaces.
  • The Map's Airport menu now includes an option to fly directly to the other island, allowing you to bypass the ticket-buying procedure.
  • The Information menu at the Used Car Dealer now includes a "Sell vehicles" option, so the workaround is no longer necessary. It's even possible to sell the car you're currently in (unless it's one of the few cars that you're not allowed to sell).
  • For RPG fans, the clothes shops now include lots of new items that are always available (i.e., not Level-dependent like most other items).

The Menus

The Map

At any time in
Free Ride, you can bring up the Map by pressing the [SELECT] button. The table below shows the button assignments while in Map mode. Note that "pointer" refers to the larger circle that can be moved freely using the left stick, while "cursor" refers to the smaller circle with an arrow on its edge that indicates the location or position to act upon when [X] is pressed. You can position the pointer pretty much anywhere on the Map, but the cursor will automatically position itself on a jumpable point (i.e., a point that you can go to).

ButtonFunction
[L1] / [R1] Selects a Menu Item (see table below) to specify which group of icons to display.
 [L2] / [R2] Zoom Out / Zoom In (4 levels: Unzoomed, Zoom1, Zoom2, Zoom3).
[Square] Allows you to apply filters to show/hide icons of specific types within a group.
D-Pad [Up/Down/Left/Right] Selects the icon above/below/left/right of the currently-selected icon.
[Left Stick] Freely move the pointer to any position.
[Right Stick] Scroll the screen without moving the pointer.
[X] Allows you to specify an action to take (see Action table below).
 [START] Displays the Pause Menu.
 [Circle] Exits the Map.

Selecting an item from the main menu allows you to choose which group of icons to display. Note that, in the table below, items enclosed in braces ({}) are for online gameplay only.

The Pause Menu

The Pause Menu can be accessed by pressing the [START] button. Near the upper left of the screen is a 24-hour clock. The number just below the clock shows how many new messages you've received (if any). The middle of the screen shows various bits of info. You can toggle between the basic view and a more detailed view by pressing the [Square] button. The basic view shows your name, the currently-defined objective, a map that shows your current location, the amount of money you have, and the number of houses and cars you own. The detailed view additionally shows your Current Vehicle (along with its class and upgrade level), the Current Area (along with your
title and progress in that Area), and an overview of your current Levels in the various Skills. Note that, if you're in Map mode with the map zoomed in, the "Current Area" info won't necessarily be for the position where your car is (as indicated by the pulsating dot). With the Map zoomed in, the Pause Menu's "Current Area" info will usually be for the Area that occupies the largest part of the visible Map screen.

The in-game clock runs at 10x speed (i.e., 10 times faster than a normal clock); the first table below shows some conversions. The second table may be useful if you're used to a 12-hour clock. Note that, when flying from Ibiza to Oahu or vice versa, there will be a 6-hour time difference when you arrive; the third table shows some examples.

Progress & Objectives

The Progress & Objectives screen can be accessed via the
Pause Menu. The screen has 5 tabbed pages that can be selected using the [L1]/[R1] buttons. The first page (Completion) is basically a general information page; the other 4 pages show an overview of your progress in the various Skills. Participating in the various Activities of a Skill will earn you points that count towards reaching a new Level and Title in that Skill. The info near the top of each Skill page includes your current Level (just below the graphic) and how many points are required to reach the next Level in that Skill. In the tables below, note that items enclosed in braces ({}) are for online gameplay only, while items enclosed in brackets ([]) are for TDU2 v1.04.

Pressing [X] on an Activity will display an Objectives checklist that shows a more detailed view of your progress, and also allows you to "Define a new objective" (i.e., set your current goal). You can "Define" (i.e., set) any Objective that's neither locked nor checkmarked, and the program will indicate that an Objective is set by showing a red dot in various places (note that a similar red dot is also used for showing a target on the GPS MiniMap). The effects of setting an Objective will vary. In some cases, setting an Objective will also cause the GPS to set a new target; in other cases, setting an Objective will have no other effect than to show a reminder near the upper left of the screen. Although it probably doesn't serve much purpose to set an Objective that only shows a reminder, there are cases where setting an Objective can be very useful (see Car List and Realtors). For the Objectives column of the table below, the number following the bullet (•) is the amount of points awarded for completion. In cases where points are awarded for the individual achievements of an Objective, the amount will be shown after the @ sign. For example: "1000@20: Win 50 instant challenges" means that it isn't necessary to win all 50 before being awarded the full 1000 points but, instead, you're awarded 20 points after each win until you've completed the Objective (eventually having won a total of 1000 points).

The first table below shows the maximum Levels that can be reached, and the second table shows a summary of what's required to reach those Levels. The amount shown in the Goals column is the maximum that will count for points towards a new Level; for example, if you already own 15 houses and 50 different vehicles, you won't get any more points for buying another house or another car. Note that the second table only covers offline-only gameplay; for goals that can only be achieved through online gameplay, see the items enclosed in braces ({}) in the table above.

Miscellaneous notes for the table above:
Controls > Controller Configuration. These options allow you to customize the feel of the controller. The Force Feedback option uses a toggle for the setting, while all others use a slider with values of 0-10 (or -5 to +5, depending on your viewpoint).
• Vibration• Speed Factor• Clutch Linearity
• Force Feedback• Steering Damping• Throttle Linearity
• Steering Sensitivity• Deadzone• Brake Linearity
If you're using a Logitech Driving Force GT or similar steering wheel, I'd recommend reducing the Vibration and Force Feedback settings to reduce the amount of wear 'n' tear that the default settings would otherwise put on the wheel. Also, the Steering Sensitivity option works the opposite way for steering wheels than it does for the PS3 game controller; while the game controller works best when set all the way to the right (maximum), steering wheels seem to work best when set all the way to the left (minimum).
Game Settings > Stake. This option allows you to set the amount you'll win or lose in Instant Challenges. Note that, for offline gameplay, this has to be $2,000 or less; otherwise, the AI car won't accept the challenge.
Interface > Display names. The names that this option refers to are the floating names attached to certain AI cars; these include cars that can be challenged to an Instant Challenge (in Free Ride), as well as other cars that you race against (in Championship and Cup challenges). Note that, even if this option is Off, you'll still be able to see the white dots on the GPS MiniMap and you'll still be able to initiate Instant Challenges.
Interface > F.R.I.M.. With this option set to "Off", the F.R.I.M. device will be completely disabled. This may be handy if the F.R.I.M. gauge is a distraction and you don't need the money. Note that F.R.I.M. and Missions of type Adrenaline share some of the same code, so turning this option Off will also make it impossible to win any missions of that type (note: this only applies to TDU2 v1.00; if you're running TDU2 v1.04, the "Off" setting will suppress the F.R.I.M. gauge but won't affect Adrenaline missions).
New Game > Delete current gamesave. This option allows you to start a new gamesave without having to exit the program. Note, however, that this won't be exactly the same as starting from scratch since some bits of data won't be cleared. If you want to be sure that you're starting with the default settings, your best bet is to use the standard PS3 utilities to delete the gamesave manually. Note that Trophies will be unaffected, whether you delete the gamesave via the program or manually and, as far as I can tell, there is no way to delete Trophies once they've been acquired.

The Cars

Car List

In TDU2, each car belongs to a certain Class; the letter indicates the type (A=Asphalt, B=Off-Road, C=Classic), and the number indicates the performance group (1=high-performance, 7=low-performance). Acc is Acceleration, Spd is Top Speed, Brk is Braking, and Dif is Difficulty. The Price column shows the price of the base car with no discount; note that some Wheels, Colors, or Interiors may cost extra. Also note that the base price will gradually go down as you progress through the game (see
Miscellaneous Rewards). The Mods column shows the modifications that can be bought for the car (C=Color, S=Stickers, and U=Upgrades). Note that a car's color can be changed at a Stickers Shop (i.e., there is no separate paint shop), while Upgrades (including wheels, for some cars) can be bought at a Tuning Shop. For the Acquire column, "P:" means that the car can be won, while "D:" means that the car can be bought from a dealer:
ACAsian CarsEUEuropean CarsITItalian CarsUSU.S. Cars
ADAudiFRFerrariMBMercedes-BenzWCWorld Classic
ECEuropean ClassicICItalian ClassicUKBritish Cars
Note that some dealers have multiple branches (e.g., North, South, East, or West) which are no longer listed separately (as was done on an older version of this webpage). The revised list above has been simplified due to inconsistencies in the naming of the dealers on different islands and in different versions of TDU2.

If you want to find a dealer that hasn't yet been unlocked, you can set the first non-checkmarked "Own n different vehicles" objective in Progress & Objectives > Collection > Vehicles. The Map's "Spots for Vehicles" tab will then show the icons of all dealers, and you can manually target the one you want to go to. Note that if you set the objective while in Map mode, the icons may not show up until after you've exited and re-entered the Map. Also note that this won't work if you already own 50 different vehicles since there won't be any "Own n different vehicles" objectives that aren't already checkmarked.

Cars By Class

The table below may be useful if you're looking for a car for a particular
Championship or Cup challenge. The Acc, Spd, and Brk columns show the ratings relative to the average for that class ('+' means above average, '-' means below average). In general, good acceleration means the car should do well on courses that have lots of corners and very few straights, while good top speed means the car should do well on courses that have lots of straights and very few corners.

The Used Car Dealer

Besides the New car dealers, each island also has a Used Car Dealer. In the early stages of gameplay, the Used Car Dealer provides a way to save some money, and to buy a car whose New car dealer hasn't yet been unlocked. In the intermediate and later stages of gameplay, the Used Car Dealer provides the only way for an avid car collector to own an upgraded Ferrari (since there is no Tune shop for this make). The Used Car Dealer on Ibiza is automatically unlocked when you buy your first car, but the one on Oahu might not be unlocked until you actually visit or drive past it. If you want to find the Oahu dealer fairly early on after arriving on the island, you can enter
Map mode and then: from Mokuleia shack, cursor right until you come to the Easternmost end of a river that forks into a 2-prong (SouthEast of the harbor). To the North, there are 2 roads that run fairly parallel; the dealer is on the Eastern road.

The Information menu at a Used Car Dealer includes 3 items:
1. Vehicles listShows a list of the currently-available cars,
2. F.R.I.M.Shows some information about the F.R.I.M. device,
3. Treasure HuntShows an overview of the Wrecks found so far.
When browsing through the Vehicles list, note that the specs shown are for the car in stock form; to see the actual specs of the available cars, you'll need to exit the list and check each car individually. At the top of the specs sheet, the icon at the far right shows the car's upgrade level. The number in the upgrade level is the average of all of the applied stages of upgrades; so, even if the number is 0, the car may still include one or more upgrades, and the upgrades can be a combination of any of the 3 enhancements (Acceleration, Speed, and/or Braking). The table below shows some of the combinations possible for commonly-found upgrade levels.
 0000111111111222222222222

Stage40000000010010101001011012
Although most cars at the Used Car Dealer will be upgraded, there will be exceptions. For example, the 3 starter cars will (as far as I can tell) always be stock and, on rare occasions, you may come across other cars in stock form as well. Prices will vary, but they'll usually be below the new price, regardless of the number of applied upgrades; although, here too, there will be exceptions. For example, the Mustang Fastback that's available when you start a new gamesave will usually cost $1,500 more than at the New car dealer, and I've also seen the Range Rover priced higher than new.

The classes of cars in the lineup will generally depend on the classes of championships that are available on the island. For example: the Ibiza dealer will typically have cars of class C4, B4, A7, and/or A6, while the Oahu dealer will typically have cars of class C3, B3, A5, A4, A3, and/or A2. Note that cars of class A1 are apparently never included in the lineup. The number of available cars seems to depend on the number of classes that haven't yet been completed. For example: if you haven't yet done either of the B4 championships, there should be a B4-class car available but, at some point after completing both championships, a car of that class will likely be missing. If you want an excluded class (other than A1) to be included in the lineup, you can:
1. Find a championship of the class you want,
2. Select the "Give Up" option,
3. Finish any one of its challenges with a non-win result,
4. Then, do something that causes a change in the lineup.
Note that, in Step 2, the "Give Up" option won't affect your game progress (i.e., your current Competition Level and checkmark in Progress & Objectives will remain intact). For Step 4, there are various things that will sometimes cause a change in the lineup but, as far as I know, the only sure way to trigger a change is by switching islands. For example: if you want a new lineup at the Oahu dealer, you can fly to Ibiza and back.

TDU2 v1.04 includes a revised Information menu at the Used Car Dealer. The most noticeable difference is the addition of the "Sell vehicles" item that gives you the ability to easily sell unwanted cars. Note that a car will lose 15% of its original value when sold.
1. Vehicles listShows a list of the currently-available cars,
2. Sell vehiclesAllows you to select cars to sell.
3. Treasure HuntShows an overview of the Wrecks found so far.
4. F.R.I.M.Shows some information about the F.R.I.M. device,

Tuning Shops

There are 3 types of upgrades that can be bought to improve a car's performance: Acceleration, Speed, and Braking. For each type of upgrade, there are a maximum of 4 stages to choose from. If you select a stage that's locked, a dialog will say "To achieve the best upgrades, you have to increase your Discovery level in this area". What it means to say (or what it should say) is "... you have to elevate your Title in this area" since it actually depends on your current
Area Title rather than your Discovery Level. The first table below shows the required title for each stage of upgrade, the second table shows the makes that the shop sells upgrades for, and the third table may be useful if you want to find a tuner the hard way (see the paragraph below for an easier way). Note that, once an upgrade has been bought, there is no way to uninstall it (worth keeping in mind for prize cars, since they can only be acquired once).

Whether you plan to buy upgrades or not, it may still be useful to have tuners visible on the Map (e.g., to make it easier to find Wreck Sites and Photo Sites). When you start a new gamesave, your best bet is to finish your first championship in 4th place overall or lower (i.e., anywhere outside of the Top 3). You'll then (eventually) get a call from Todd Bishop about treating your car right. Once you've received that call, it will be possible to see all of the tuner icons on the Map's "Spots For Vehicles" tab. Note that the above will also work if you redo a championship, in which case, you'll need to choose the "Give up" option before choosing "Start".

Prize Cars

Unlike in TDU1 where a prize car becomes available at a dealer once it's been won, prize cars in TDU2 can only be acquired once (worth keeping in mind if you're thinking about upgrading, since there is no way to bring a car back to its stock state once it's been upgraded). In the table below, the P: column serves mainly as a reference for the Acquire column of the
Car List. The D column shows how the car is delivered:
G : the car is delivered to your Garage and automatically becomes your Current Vehicle,
U : the car is delivered to the Used Car Dealer and remains there until you pick it up.
For prize cars that are delivered directly to your Garage, if you want to be sparing with Garage space, you can fill up any empty spaces with more usable cars before acquiring the prize car (i.e., before winning the event that awards the car); in which case, the car will be delivered to the Used Car Dealer instead. Each Used Car Dealer can have a maximum of 8 prize cars on hold.

Useful Cars

The table below shows the cars that I've found useful for game completion. This is basically meant as a "Recommended Cars" list but, as always with these kinds of things, your mileage may vary. For a list of possible alternatives, see
Cars By Class.

Where multiple cars are listed, the character separating the cars shows how the left and right cars compare to eachother:
-the car on the left gave me better results than the car on the right,
|the two cars (left and right) gave me more-or-less the same results,
+the car on the right was used in addition to the car(s) on the left,
same as '+' except the car on the left was no longer used after acquiring the car on the right.
Note that cars separated by '|' are listed in alphabetical order (not in order of preference, price, or anything else).

Miscellaneous notes for the table above:
All Championship/Cup challenges. All cars were tested in stock form, and the lists include only those that I'm capable of winning the Cup challenges with. The reason for only testing cars in stock form is because not all upgrades will be available at all times (e.g., although you're always allowed to buy Stage1, the Tuning shop might still be locked). The reason for making Cups the main priority is because, unlike Championships where you don't need to win every challenge, each Cup challenge does need to be won.
A1 Championship/Cup challenges. For Challenge #7 of Hawaii Cup 2 (Waianae mountain), the Ariel Atom 300 Supercharged actually gave me better results than any of the cars listed.
A2 Championship/Cup challenges. Pretty much all of the unlisted A2-class cars are also capable of winning the Cup challenges.
Instant Challenges. If you choose an easy opponent, you can use pretty much any car (except maybe a Citroen 2CV or Volkswagen Beetle).
Missions. For many of the missions, the choice of which car to use will depend on the type of roads and the terrain where the mission takes place.
Roads. The Ariel Atom is used mainly for urban streets and winding roads where the straights aren't long enough for the car to "top out", while the Bugatti Veyron is used mainly for long stretches of freeway.

The Houses

Realtors

Since each House has a limited amount of Garage space, acquiring more cars also means you'll eventually need to buy more houses. There are basically 2 ways to buy a house: you can either go there and buy it directly, or you can buy it via a Realtor. Each Area has its own Realtor, and each realtor handles a different set of houses. You can visit a realtor to Buy, Exchange, or Sell a house. You can Sell a house via any realtor but, if you want to Exchange a house, you'll need to do so via the realtor that handles the house that you want. Selling or exchanging a house that has cars in its garage is possible, but only if there are no cars 'orphaned' in the process. Note that a house will lose some of its original value when sold or exchanged, and the devaluation rate will vary.

The Ibiza1 realtor will be unlocked after doing your first championship (C4.1 Sant Antoni) but, at that stage, the Ibiza2 realtor won't even be visible on the Map. If you want to find the Ibiza2 realtor in the early stages of gameplay, it's on the street that runs NorthWest from the roundabout at the NorthWest section of downtown Ibiza City (the coastal city NorthEast of the Airport). Note that, at some point, you may get a
call from Todd Bishop saying "That garage of yours has got to be getting pretty cramped...". From that point on, all Realtors (even the ones on Oahu when you first arrive there) will be visible on the Map. If you didn't get the call and you want to find an Oahu realtor, you can set the first non-checkmarked "Own n houses" objective in Progress & Objectives > Collection > Houses and Furniture. The Map's "Spots for Avatar" screen will then show the icons of all 4 realtors, and you can manually target the one you want to go to. Note that if you set the objective while in Map mode, the icons may not show up until after you've exited and re-entered the Map. Also note that this won't work if you already own 15 houses since there won't be any "Own n houses" objectives that aren't already checkmarked.

When you select "Buy" from the Real Estate menu, a dialog will show various bits of info such as the price, star rating, number of Furniture, and number of Garage spaces. Near the upper right of the dialog is a map with a pulsating dot showing where the house is located. Many of the Directions in the Wreck Sites and Photo Sites sections include houses to specify how to get to various places. If a house isn't yet visible on the Map, you can use the Realtor's map to get a general idea of where a house is.

When you buy a house, you automatically jump to its location. If you want to save yourself some travel time in the intermediate stages of gameplay (i.e., when you have lots of money but haven't yet unlocked many Roads), you can buy a house in the general vicinity of the location that you want to go to, and then drive to the location from your newly-bought home. You can then sell the house after it's served its purpose; the trade-off is that you'll save some time but it'll be at a cost (i.e., you're basically spending money to save time).

House Styles

The table below shows some of the characteristics of the various house styles and is mainly meant as a reference for the Style column of the
House List. The number in parentheses is the car capacity.

Apartment (2)Situated in an apartment building. Has 2 huge windows in the living room. Has a bedroom and dining area but no kitchen. The Garage looks like it could hold more cars, but only 2 spaces can be occupied (the others are apparently for other tenants).
Aquarium (6)Has an aquarium that spans 3 floors (the living room area, the balcony above it, and the Garage below it). Entering the Garage puts you at the top of a staircase that leads down to the Garage.
Barrack (2)Your first home on Oahu. Has 1 ceiling fan that can be heard in the living room. Has a leaky faucet in the bathroom. The door to the Garage is to the right as you enter (on the same wall as the kitchen window).
Beach (4)Has a roof with 4 glass windows. The living room has a multi-pane wall-to-wall window. As you enter, there is a kitchen to the left and a dining area to the right. The door to the Garage is by the dining area.
Caravan (2)Your first home on Ibiza in TDU2. The door to the Garage is outside, past the swimming pool.
Dancehall (2)A walk-in closet can be seen as you enter, with a kitchen and dining area to the left and an empty area to the right. The empty area looks like it could serve as a dance floor. Has a separate room with a lit swimming pool surrounded almost entirely by a 5-piece sofa and glass roof. The door to the Garage is outside, through the door by the kitchen and dining area.
Desert (2)A dining area can be seen as you enter, with a potted cactus to the left. The door to the Garage is outside, through the door to the left of the cactus. The Garage looks like it has space for 5 cars, but only holds 2.
Jungle (4)Has lots of plants in pots on shelves along walls. Tribal music can always be heard in the living room. The door to the Garage is in another room, through the door to the left as you enter.
Kitchen (4)Has a good-sized kitchen to the right as you enter. Has 2 living room areas (one large plus a smaller one behind the kitchen wall). The door to the Garage is to the right as you enter.
Palace (8)Has the look of a luxury hotel, with a fountain near the living room and lots of books on 2 walls. The door to the Garage is in a hallway, just past and to the left of the TV screen as you enter.
Penthouse (6)Situated on the roof of an apartment building. A dining area and swimming pool can be seen as you enter. The door to the Garage is just around the corner of the wall on the right as you enter.
Sculptures (6)A wooden swirl sculpture can be seen as you enter. There is another wooden sculpture near the front door hallway. Has a gym and a separate room for a jakuzi. The door to the Garage is in a hallway at the far end as you enter, left of the gym.
Statues (6)Has tribal statues and other artifacts in various places. The door to the Garage is just off to the right as you enter.
Terrarium (4)Has a terrarium by the front door (to the right as you enter). Has 2 ceiling fans above the living room that can always be heard. The door to the Garage is to the left as you enter.
Tree (4)Has a huge tree trunk that can be seen near the kitchen as you enter. The door to the Garage is to the left of the kitchen.
Village (2)Has 6 square windows in the slanted wooden roof. The kitchen by the front door has a microwave and refrigerator but no sink. The living room has an open terrarium. The door to the Garage is straight ahead and to the left as you enter.
Waterfall (8)A pool table can be seen as you enter, with a waterfall to the left and the living room to the right. The door to the Garage is on the same wall as the front door, to the left as you enter, but there is a divider separating the two and you have to walk around the plant to get to it.
Yacht (6)Luxury boat situated in a harbor. A conference/dining area can be seen as you enter, with an aquarium just beyond it. The door to the Garage is to the left of the aquarium and staircase. The Garage is below deck and has windows through which you can see the sea floor.

House List

For the Location column of the table below, the number preceding the colon (:) is the Area; the letters following the colon are N (North), E (East), S (South), W (West), C (Central), U (Upper), and/or L (Lower). Cap is the car capacity, and PpC is the calculated price per car space. Note that Caravan (Ibiza) and Mokuleia shack (Oahu) are initially free; the prices shown are what the houses would cost if you wanted to buy them back after selling them. For the Style column, see the
House Styles section above.

The Events

Free Ride

In TDU2, you're in Free Ride mode pretty much anytime you're doing any kind of driving that isn't part of any other event. Contrary to what the name seems to imply, Free Ride is actually more mandatory than optional. Free Ride is one way to unlock new Roads and Locations, and it's the only way to find
Wrecks and Photo Sites. Free Ride is also the only mode that allows you to use the F.R.I.M. device, initiate Instant Challenges, and receive calls.

Unlocking Roads is an essential part of gameplay and, although you'll unlock some roads during other events, a huge amount will need to be unlocked in Free Ride. Unlocking roads will also unlock any Locations that you happen to pass along the way. A Location is anything that can be represented as an icon on the Map (e.g., car dealers, tuning shops, houses, etc.). In Free Ride, you'll know when you're nearing a Location because you'll be able to see its hologram. In general, a hologram that you can see on the road can also be seen as an icon on the Map; one exception is the hologram for a photo site (visible after reaching Competition Level 7), since photo sites are more like wreck sites than Locations. Unlocking 100% of the Roads in all 6 Areas is probably one of the most time-consuming activities in TDU2. If you're having trouble finding that last 1% in an Area, the tips below may help. Note that unlocking all roads might not be necessary if you're more interested in obtaining new Area Titles than in game completion.
• Barely Visible Bit In Ibiza1: SouthWest of Seaside apartment, there are 2 tunnels. The Western tunnel has a road that runs perpendicular to the road at the Northern end. Note that this will only be hard to find if you're running TDU2 v1.00 since v1.04 has a Mission that starts there.
• Barely Visible Bit In Ibiza2: Just SouthEast of the Asphalt Racing School, there is a short piece of road bordering the wheat field.
• Dead-End Roads: Missions and other challenges will sometimes end on a dead-end road but leave the last bit untravelled.
• Gray Areas: In the lighter-colored grayish areas (e.g., around the salt fields in Ibiza2), it's easy to overlook untravelled roads due to the surroundings being a similar color.
• Intersections: Untravelled roads that go onto or off of freeways can sometimes be hard to spot. For other roads, cutting corners will sometimes leave bits of untravelled road at or near intersections.
• Map Pointer: In areas where it's hard to tell what's road and what's not, you can move the Map's pointer over the area to help you find untravelled bits (watch the pointer to see if it changes).
• Multi-Area Roads: If you're trying to unlock the roads of a particular Area, keep in mind that there are some roads that span multiple Areas.
• Parallel Roads: When parallel roads run fairly close together, it's easy to miss the tiny pieces of roads that sometimes join them.
• Spaghetti Clusters: If you find a piece of untravelled road but you don't see any easy way to get to it, you can manually target that piece and let the GPS figure out how to get there.
• Thin Roads: In Ibiza City and other places, there may be very thin roads that are barely visible on the Map; these will often be easier to find using the GPS MiniMap.

The F.R.I.M. device (Free Ride Instant Money), as the name suggests, allows you to earn a bit of money while driving in Free Ride. The F.R.I.M. gauge has 10 levels. Each time you see the flashing "BANK", you can either press [X] to bank the amount shown, or you can continue to the next level. The amounts earned for banking on levels 1-10 are shown below. The deluxe F.R.I.M. is the reward for reaching Competition Level 12 ("Champion" title).
 12345678910
Normal F.R.I.M.$100 $200 $350 $500 $750 $1,000$1,500$2,000$2,500$4,000
Deluxe F.R.I.M.$200$350$500$950$1,500$2,200$3,500$5,000$7,500$10,000
The F.R.I.M. Help screens can be accessed from the menu at the Used Car Dealer. Note that simply driving won't actually make a noticeable difference in the gauge; you have to be driving at the car's top speed. One efficient way to earn money with the F.R.I.M. is to use your slowest car and try to drive past other cars as fast and as close to them as possible without touching them. Using a Citroen 2CV or Volkswagen Beetle, it should be fairly easy to bank the maximum amount every 5-10 minutes or so, if you're on a long stretch of fairly straight road that has 2-way traffic. The F.R.I.M. can also be used on freeways, but it won't be as efficient, unless you do some "ghost riding".

Instant Challenges are point-to-point races held in public traffic on random courses that start at your current position. You can initiate an Instant Challenge in Free Ride by flashing your headlights at certain AI cars (use [X] on the PS3 game controller, or [R3] on a Logitech Driving Force GT and possibly other steering wheels). On the GPS MiniMap, cars that can be challenged will show up as white dots and, on the road, you'll see floating text in 2 colors. The white part of the text is the name of the driver, while the text to the right is the distance, shown in varying colors from red (far away) to yellow (nearby). Once you're within close range, you should be able to see the car with only the driver's name attached. When you initiate an Instant Challenge, a dialog will appear near the upper left of the screen showing the car's class, its upgrade level, and the driver's name. If you initiated the Challenge by accident, you can press [SELECT] to Cancel. Note that you can win some money if you win the challenge, but you can also lose money if you don't win. The amount you'll win or lose can be set in Options Menu > Game Settings > Stake. Note that, for offline gameplay, the Stake has to be $2,000 or less; otherwise, the AI car won't accept the challenge. Winning an Instant Challenge will earn you points that count towards your Competition Level. If you want an easier go of achieving the "Win 50 instant challenges" Objective, you can cruise the paved roads around the river region of Ibiza Area2 (EastCentral part of the island) and look for a Citroen 2CV driven by Oxythan. Once you've initiated the first Instant Challenge, you can keep redoing races (press [X] at the end of each race) until you've reached your goal. Note that if you redo multiple Instant Challenges by pressing [X], you won't be notified of any change in statistics (levelling up, title change, rewards, etc), but you can find out how you're progressing by periodically checking the Pause Menu. If you take note of how much money you have, you can use that number to calculate how many races you've done so far. For example: if the Stake is set to $2,000 and you started the first race with $8,000, you'll know you've won 50 races when you reach $108,000. Races will take an average of about 2-3 minutes each, so 50 can take up to two and a half hours.

In the early and intermediate stages of gameplay, you'll get Calls from various AI characters while in Free Ride. You'll know when a call is coming in because you'll hear some static-like noise before the phone rings. When you get a call, you can either press [X] to accept or [Circle] to decline. In most cases, pressing [X] on a call will set a new target to whatever the call pertains to; if you don't want to change the current target, or you're just not interested in what the call pertains to, you can press [Circle] and continue with whatever you're currently doing. Note that, in Free Ride, you can press and hold [L3] to remove an unwanted target (e.g., if it was set automatically or unintentionally). Regardless of whether you press [X] or [Circle], many of the calls will unhide one or more icons on the Map. The first part of the table below shows which type of icon is unhidden when you receive a call; the abbreviation in parentheses shows the group that the icons will be visible in (SPC = Single Player Challenges, SFA = Spots For Avatar, SFV = Spots For Vehicles). The second part of the table shows some calls that serve mainly as reminders; most of those will also set a new target if [X] is pressed. Note that there is no guarantee that you'll receive all of the calls listed, since some of them depend on certain factors. For example: the call about Realtors seems to require both Garage spaces being filled while owning only the Caravan, and the call about Tuning shops seems to require finishing a Championship in 4th place overall or lower.
Unhidden On MapAfter Receiving This Call
Car washes (SFV)Todd Bishop: Hey. It's Todd. I wanted to give you a tip about a good carwash in the area. They'll get your car looking good as new!
Clothes shops (SFA)Tess Wintory: You're a mess! You can't go on TV looking like something the cat dragged in. Especially during prime time! Get to the clothes shop! They'll clean you up and make you presentable for the viewers!
Cosmetic clinic (SFA)Miami Harris: Hey there. It's Miami. You know, it isn't just about how well you drive, it's about how good you look when you're driving! There's a cosmetic clinic on Ibiza. Pay them a visit! A makeover might be just what you need!
Duel 1: Miami (SPC)Miami Harris: It's Miami. You got lucky in the last championship, and now I bet you think you're special. Well, how about a small challenge between the two of us? I'll put my car at stake.
Duel 2: Ryan (SPC)Ryan Wilder: Stop playing around! Come and race me in a duel if you have the guts. If you win, I'll hand over my car.
Duel 3: Tess (SPC)Tess Wintory: Hi, it's Tess. I want you good and ready for the next Solar Crown, so let's keep your skills sharp with a duel! I'll even sweeten the pot. If you can beat me, I'll give you my car.
Duel 4: Chris (SPC)Chris Wilder: Yo, it's Chris. I hear you think you're hot stuff. Well, I'm just the guy to put you in your place! You think you can beat me on the open road? C'mon. Let's duel, just the two of us. Unless you're too chicken, of course.
Duel 5: Stuart (SPC)Stuart Wintory: Listen carefully... Forget the cameras and championships. Just me and you on the highway, and we'll determine who's the best. I'm so sure of myself that I'm ready to bet my car!
Hairdressers (SFA)Tess Wintory: It's Tess again. You're a racing celebrity now, and you need to take better care of your appearance. Maybe you should stop by the hairdresser.
Mission: Jane (SPC)Todd Bishop: I've got a favor to ask. A friend of mine needs some help. If you could catch up to her, she'll explain everything.
Photo Studio (SPC)Mikey: I'm calling to introduce myself. My name is Mikey. Marco gave me your number. I'm calling because I have a job I'd like to offer you. Pop by my studio and I'll fill you in.
Racing School: A7/A6 (SPC)Tess Wintory: I think you're ready for an even more challenging race. I'll be waiting for you at the Asphalt school. Meet me there!
Racing School: B3 (SPC)Jane O'Mahan: Hi, it's Jane. Don't forget to go to the Dirt driving school. You still need to learn a couple of things before you can handle an SUV!
Racing School: C3 (SPC)Todd Bishop: Hi, it's Todd. So, do you like being in Hawaii? You know that I have a Classic driving school here too, right? Stop by and I'll give you some pointers.
Realtors (SFA)Todd Bishop: That garage of yours has got to be getting pretty cramped, with all those cars you've been stockpiling. Why not talk to the local real estate agent and see if you can get set up with a bigger place?
Stickers shops (SFV)Tess Wintory: Hey, it's Tess. Your appearance is important if you're going to be on TV, but the look of your car is just as important! Did you know you can personalize your car at the stickers shop?
Tuning shops (SFV)Todd Bishop: You need to treat your car right. How do you expect to win races if you don't keep your wheels in primo shape? Check out the local tuner. A tune-up might give you an advantage on the track!

Titles

As you progress through the game, various achievements will earn you new titles. There are basically 6 sets of titles: 4 sets of Skill Level Titles, 1 set of Global Level Titles, and 1 set of Area Titles. In the column headers of the first table below, the number in parentheses is the amount of Skill points required to reach that Level. Skill points are earned by completing the various
Objectives of a Skill. Your Global Level is the sum of all of your Skill Levels. Titles marked with an asterisk (*) will unlock a reward when obtained. Note that the titles that can only be obtained through online gameplay are not shown (I only play offline, so I can't verify any titles other than the ones listed).

Skill Level TitlesLevel 0 (0 pts)Level 3 (525 pts)Level 7 (2175 pts)Level 12 (6225 pts)

Global Level TitlesGlobal 0Global 10Global 20Global 30Global 40
Title Inglorious Someone * Popular New Star Celebrity

While the Level Titles are fairly straightforward (a certain Level equates to a certain Title), the Area Titles are not quite as simple. When you earn Discovery points, the same points that count towards obtaining a new Discovery title will also count towards obtaining a new Area title, but only for the Area where the points are earned. While your Discovery title stays the same no matter where you are, your Area title can differ from Area to Area (e.g., you might be a "Buddy" in one Area and a "Stranger" in another). To complicate matters, the number of Discovery points required to obtain a new Area title is different for each island. In the column headers of the table below, the numbers in parentheses are in the format N1/N2, where N1 is the amount of points required on Ibiza and N2 is the amount required on Oahu. You can find out how many points you currently have in an Area by checking the Current Area info of the Pause Menu's detailed view. If you want to find out how many points you currently have in an Area that you're not currently in, you can enter Map mode and then zoom in on the pertinent Area before entering the Pause Menu.

Area Titles1st Title (0/0)2nd Title (200/240)3rd Title (600/690)4th Title (1400/1500)
Title Stranger Familiar * Buddy * Friend *

If you're only interested in the Friend title, rather than in game completion, the table below shows what's required in each Area. The points shown in the rightmost column is the sum of the left columns. For Ibiza, the Friend title requires 1400 Area points, while Oahu requires 1500 for its Areas. The amount that's over (shown in parentheses) is the optional amount that can be skipped. For example, for Ibiza1, doing all of the listed activities will earn you 1520 points, which is 120 points more than required. So, if you wanted to, you could skip 3 photos (120 pts), or you could skip 4 wrecks (100 pts) or 4 missions (100 pts), or you could skip any combination that doesn't add up to more than 120 points. Note that, if you're running TDU2 v1.04, the requirements for the Friend title will be the same but, since there are more activities where points can be earned, there will be more that can be skipped.
AreaWrecks : 25/40Photos : 40/50Missions : 25/40RoadsPoints
 Ibiza 1 10 = 250 8 = 320 20 = 500 100% = 450  1520 (120 over)
 Ibiza 2 10 = 250 10 = 400 20 = 500 75% = 300 1450 (50 over)
 Oahu 1|3|4 10 = 400 5 = 250 15 = 600 75% = 300 1550 (50 over)
 Oahu 2 10 = 400 3 = 150 15 = 600 100% = 450 1600 (100 over)
If you're only interested in obtaining the Friend title to unlock items in shops, you don't necessarily have to be a Friend in every Area. For car upgrades, all of the tune shops can be found in Ibiza1, Ibza2, Oahu1, and Oahu4, while all clothes shops can be found in Ibiza1 and Ibza2.

When you obtain a new Discovery title (Tourist, Digger, or Traveller), a dialog will say "Congratulations, you obtained a new Discovery title! New items available in tuners, hairdressers, clothes shops". However, the latter part of the message won't necessarily be true unless you've also obtained a new Area title (Familiar, Buddy, or Friend), in which case, the dialog will have the island and Area (enclosed in parentheses) at the end of the message. In short, in TDU2 v1.00, there are rewards for obtaining new Area titles, but not for obtaining new Discovery titles. The table below shows all of the title-related rewards (again, rewards that can only be obtained through online gameplay are not included).

Licenses

There are 3 categories of licenses: Classic (C), OffRoad (B), and Asphalt (A). Licenses are obtained by successfully completing a series of tests at the various Racing Schools (shown as helmet icons on the
Map). Obtaining a new license unlocks a new Championship and sets a new Objective. There are 3 Racing Schools (one for each category) on each island, and there are a total of 8 licenses that can be obtained. Note that the licenses of a category need to be obtained in order (e.g., it isn't possible to obtain a B3 license unless you already have a B4 license).

Championships

All championships are initially unavailable. A ".1" championship (left column of the table below) is unlocked when you obtain a new
license. A ".2" championship (right column) is unlocked when you complete the ".1" championship. For the challenges (items preceded by a bullet), the letter in parentheses is the type of challenge:
C CameraPass through a number of speedtrap cameras at the highest speed possible,
E EliminatorMulti-lap race where the last-place driver is eliminated at the end of each lap,
R RaceRace against your rivals and try to reach the finish line ahead of them,
S SpeedReach and maintain the highest speed possible for a certain amount of time,
T TimeTrialSolo race where you try to cross the finish line in as short a time as possible.
An asterisk (*) means that the challenge is held in public traffic.

On the Map, championships are shown as blue diamond icons, with the ".2" championship shown in a slightly darker shade than the ".1". Unlike Cup challenges, Championship challenges can be done in any order. The icons of done challenges will have a checkmark at the lower right, and these will be locked until either the championship has been won, or the checkmarks have been cleared using the championship's "Give Up" option. Once a championship has been won, it will be possible to redo its individual challenges without clearing the checkmarks.

To win a championship, you don't necessarily need to win every challenge; you just need to finish the championship with equal or more points than all of the other drivers. The points awarded for placing in a challenge are:
  1st: 102nd: 83rd: 64th: 45th: 36th: 27th: 18th: 0
To complete a championship, you don't necessarily need to win the championship; you just need to finish the championship in 3rd place overall or better. As far as I can tell, the only disadvantages of completing a championship without winning it are that you earn less money and you might not get a checkmark in Progress & Objectives. However, anything that's normally unlocked by winning a championship will also be unlocked by completing the championship. Note that if you complete a ".1" championship in 2nd or 3rd place overall, the Objectives checklist might show that the ".2" championship is still locked; if so, you'll still have the ability to use the Map to set the target manually.

Note that the total amount of the championship bonus is only awarded once; the "Give Up" option will clear the checkmarks, but it won't reset the bit of data to allow you to re-win the full bonus. If the championship bonus is $100,000, for example, and you've already received $75,000 for finishing 2nd overall, the bonus might only be $25,000 if you redo the championship and win it this time around. Note, however, that the program is somewhat inconsistent about whether it does or doesn't award the remaining portion of the bonus (sometimes it will, sometimes it won't). For championships that have already been won, the bonus for winning it a subsequent time will always be $0. The "Give Up" option is therefore mainly only useful if you want to redo a championship that you've either finished but not yet completed (i.e., to unlock other events), or completed but not yet won (i.e., for game completion).

Cups

As you progress through the game, you'll eventually unlock Cups, which are similar to
Championships but with at least one important difference. While the challenges of a Championship can be done in any order, only a single Cup challenge will be available at any given time, and you have to win that challenge to unlock the next. The Cups themselves are unlocked when certain events have been done:
Ibiza Cup: C4.1, C4.2, B4.1, B4.2, A7.1, A7.2, A6.1, A6.2 completed
Hawaii Cup 1: A5.1, A5.2, A4.1, A4.2, B3.1, B3.2 completed + Ibiza Cup won
Hawaii Cup 2: A3.1, A3.2, A2.1, A2.2, A1.1, A1.2, C3.1, C3.2 completed + Hawaii Cup 1 won

While it's possible to do 2 Championships using a single car, multiple cars are required to do a single Cup, the classes of which are shown after the Cup's name in the table below. For the challenges, the data in parentheses is in the format "ChallengeType, CarClass", where ChallengeType can be C (Camera/SpeedTrap), E (Eliminator), R (Race), S (Speed), or T (TimeTrial). An asterisk (*) means that the challenge is held in public traffic.

Although the inability to re-win championship bonuses means that there are no real "money-makers" in the game, there is a quirk in the code that handles Cup data that does provide an alternative solution for a limited period of time. Once you've won the Cup shown in the first column of the table below, you can keep redoing the Speed Challenge shown in the second column for however long you want. Since the challenge has a time limit, you don't actually have to do any driving; you can just let your car sit in the middle of the road while the clock ticks away. When the time runs out, you can press the [X] button 4 times to repeat the process and re-win the cup bonus. Important: Note that these "money-makers" will only work during the game session that the Cup is completed in, and only as long as you don't win any of the Cup's challenges a second time during that game session. If you quit and then restart the game, or you win any of the Cup's challenges a second time, the "money-maker" will no longer work and the cup bonus will be $0! Also note that these "money-makers" won't work if you're running anything other than the original TDU2 v1.00 (see Game Versions).

Missions

On the
Map, Missions are shown as bomb icons. The timer on the icon shows how long the Mission will be available before it expires and temporarily disappears (undone Missions will eventually reappear). The very first Mission is the Time Attack to the driving school and completing the Mission is the only way to obtain a B4 license (since there is no other way to unlock the Off-Road Racing School). Note that this first Mission will be the only one available until it's been completed. Thereafter, only a limited number of Missions will be available at any given time. Successfully completing a Mission will earn you points that count towards your Discovery Level and Area Title.

For the Adrenaline missions, note that the "Options Menu > Interface > F.R.I.M." setting needs to be "On" if you're running TDU2 v1.00; otherwise, the meter will stay at 0. For the Convoy missions, if you find a car that you enjoy driving but you don't know which make or model it is, you can find out by checking the "Current vehicle" in the Pause Menu's detailed view.

TDU2 v1.04 includes 20 additional Convoy Missions (8 on Ibiza, 12 on Oahu). On the Map, these new Missions are shown as yellow bomb icons. The 2 new types of Convoy Missions are:
• Extreme ConvoyTransport the car without a single scratch. No time limit.
• Timed ConvoyTransport the car within a given amount of time. Damage is allowed, to a certain extent.
In the table below, if the Goal column shows a time, the Mission is a Timed Convoy; otherwise, it's an Extreme Convoy. The Reward column shows the maximum that can be earned by completing the mission with no car damage. Successfully completing a mission unlocks a Wreck Site and the Map will show a radar-like circle giving you a hint of where to look. Note that, unlike the original wreck sites which are permanent, v1.04 wrecks will only be visible after successfully completing a mission.

Wreck Sites (Treasure Hunt)

Finding a wreck will earn you points that count towards your
Discovery Level and Area Title. Finding all 10 of the wrecks in an Area will earn you a new car which can be redeemed at the Used Car Dealer. Note that you don't necessarily need the Metal Detector (awarded for reaching Competition Level 3) to find wrecks, but it does make it easier since many of them won't be in plain sight. Where an instruction refers to a House, Car Dealer, or Tuner that isn't yet visible on the Map, see Realtors, Car List, or Tuning Shops.

Photo Sites (Viewpoints)

Although there are many things that might be worth photographing, the Photographer will accept only photos taken at specific photo sites, some of which require specific conditions. An acceptable photo will earn you points that count towards your
Discovery Level and Area Title. But, before you can even start looking for photo sites, you'll first need to visit the Photo Studio. Like most other Locations, the Photo Studio won't initially be visible on the Map but can become visible by either waiting for a call or by driving past it. The pertinent call will be from Mikey who has a job he'd like to offer you, and you'll normally get that call sometime after visiting the Asphalt Racing School. If you'd rather not wait for the call, you can find the Photo Studio just NorthWest of the red-roofed section of Ibiza City, on the street East of the first roundabout. Once you've visited the Photo Studio, you'll be able to find photo sites. You'll know when you've found one when you see a camera icon just below the GPS MiniMap. Reaching Competition Level 7 ("Pilot" title) unlocks the Photo Site Holograms, which should give you an easier go of it. In the table below, if the Conditions aren't currently met (e.g., wrong Time or Car), you can bookmark the site and come back to it later. The number of bookmarks that can be stored is limited to about 30 per island, so remember to remove the bookmark of any photo site that you're done with. For the current Time, you can check the clock near the upper left corner of the Pause Menu. For photos to qualify for the Photographer, they'll need to be taken in a certain way:
1.Position the camera,4.Press [START] to accept the default name,
2.Press [X] to take the shot,5.Press [X] to Confirm,
3.Press [X] again to bring up the "Photo name" dialog,6.Press [X] again to close the Reward dialog.
For Step 1, you can tell when the camera is in an acceptable position when the left and right indicators are both green. Use the right stick to move the camera and [L2]/[R2] to zoom. Note that, for offline-only gameplay, the 4 photos enclosed in brackets ([]) will be impossible to take, unless you're running an updated version of TDU2 that includes changing weather (e.g., v1.04). Where an instruction refers to a House, Car Dealer, or Tuner that isn't yet visible on the Map, see Realtors, Car List, or Tuning Shops.

Gameplay

Getting Started
  1. Once you've chosen an avatar, use the left stick to walk to the girl standing in the doorway. Behind and to the left of her, near the back of the room, there is a door with a flashing circle on it. Walk towards it until you see the text that says "Garage". Then press [X].
Note: TDU2 v1.04 allows you to skip most of the introductory animations by pressing the [X] button. However, skipping certain animations may prevent the Avatar file from being created; in which case, the Pause screen will show a picture of a generic silhouette instead of your avatar. If you want your avatar shown on the Pause screen, your best bet is to let the animations play out (at least until you're sure that the Avatar file has been created).
  2. The girl will give you a Ferrari California for your birthday (this turns out to be a dream and is apparently meant to give you a feel for the game). Press [X] to get into the car, and [R2] to start the engine. You can change the camera view by pressing [R1]. Press [START], D-pad [Left], then [X] to bring up the Options Menu, and then check Controls to get an overview of button assignments. You can also set your preferences at this point, or you can change them later.
  3. Follow the GPS and drive the girl to your first target. There, you'll meet a guy who will take you to the Used Car Dealer where you'll buy your first car. You start out with $27,000 and you have 3 C4-class cars to choose from:
     • Ford Mustang Fastback • Lotus Esprit S3 • Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione
Choose the Lancia if you want an easier go of it, or choose the Lotus if you want a bit of a challenge, or choose the Mustang if you want an even bigger challenge. Once you've bought a car, the mechanic will install a device called F.R.I.M. (Free Ride Instant Money).
  4. The GPS will then plot a course to your first Home. Once there, you'll find various items with holograms on or near them; pointing the cursor at an item and moving closer to it will display some text.
    Hologram In HouseTextFunction

    Hologram In GarageTextFunction
Road on DoorExitLeave Garage and return to Free Ride mode
"i" on WallListShow list of owned cars
House on DoorLoungeLeave Garage and return to House
  5. Your next target will be the Classic Racing School where you'll need to pass a series of 6 tests to obtain your C4 license. Note that, unlike the previous targets, you'll need to press the [X] button when you reach this one; a hologram above the road will tell you when you're near, and an icon just below the GPS MiniMap will tell you when [X] can be pressed.
  6. Obtaining a new license unlocks a new championship which automatically becomes your next target. In this case, it's the C4.1 Sant Antoni championship consisting of 6 challenges. Whenever a new target is automatically set, you can press [SELECT] to enter Map mode and see if there's an unlocked road near your target. In this case, since you already drove past it on the way to your Home, you only need to select the C4 icon, press [X], and then choose "Start". The challenges of a championship can be selected and entered in any order. The menu at the end of each challenge will include "Next" and "Retry" options. Note that, once "Next" has been chosen, you won't be able to redo the challenge until you've finished the championship. Tip: For this first championship, try to finish in 4th place overall or lower. The reason for finishing outside of the Top 3 is so that you'll get the call from Todd Bishop that will make all Tuning Shops visible on the Map. Once you get that call, you can go back and win the championship (be sure to choose "Give up" to clear the checkmarks).
  7. At this stage, you'll get various calls from AI characters, giving you a variety of things to choose from. Note that you don't need to press [X] on a call unless you're interested in what the call pertains to at that particular moment; since most calls will unhide icons on the Map, you'll be able to get back to them later. A few of your current options are shown below; any of these will earn you points that will count towards eventually earning new Titles.
  8. If you enjoyed the C4 license tests and the C4.1 championship, the General Walkthrough describes one way to proceed from here, focusing mainly on racing. On the other hand, if you're more interested in the RPG side of the game, there is an Alternative Path that describes how to proceed in a more leisurely manner.

General Walkthrough

There are many ways to play through TDU2 and this is just one example. Note that this walkthrough was written while running TDU2 v1.00 (offline only). If you're running an upgraded version, see "
Game Versions" in Miscellaneous Notes. For the tables in this section, the first column shows the license to get, the second column shows the recommended car to buy, and the last 2 columns show the championships to do. Cheaper alternative cars are listed just below each table. If a car isn't available at the Used Car Dealer, you can either check again later or you can buy it new (see the note in the Car List section if the dealer isn't yet visible on the Map). Where a table includes multiple rows, the rows can be done in pretty much any order. For all of the steps below, press [Circle] on all calls (including Duels) unless the step specifies otherwise.
  1. Go through all of the preliminary stuff (choose avatar, test-drive Ferrari, drive to studio, buy car, drive to Home, get C4 license, do C4.1 championship). When you get the call from Todd Bishop asking a favor, press [X] and do the Mission. Then, get your B4 license. Then, go to Progress & Objectives > Competition > Championships and reset the Objective to "Win C4 High championship".
C4Lancia Delta Integrale EvoluzioneC4.1 Sant AntoniC4.2 East Ibiza
    Alternative C4: Lotus Esprit S3.
  2. Buy any one of the B4 or A7 cars listed below. When you get the call from Tess Wintory telling you to meet her at the Asphalt Racing School, press [X], and then get your A7/A6 license. If your second car is a Land Rover, reset the Objective to "Win B4 championship". After completing the 2 championships that your second car is eligible for, go to the Ibiza1 realtor and buy Seaside apartment. Then, buy the remaining 2 cars and do the remaining 4 championships (note that A6.1 is less than 1.5 miles from your newly-bought home).

    A7.2 West Area
    A6.2 Santa Eularia
Alternative A7: Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde, A6: Chevrolet Camaro 1LT.
  3. Switch to the appropriate cars and do the Duels against Miami Harris and Ryan Wilder (in any order). To do a Duel, you can either set the Objective, or find the Duel on the Map, or wait for the person to call back. Leave both prize cars at the Used Car Dealer, for now.
  4. Do the first 7 challenges of the Ibiza Cup. When you have at least an hour of spare time, do the final challenge and then take advantage of the first money-maker to acquire a few million more.
  5. Buy another House and pick up your 2 Duel prize cars. You can also find all the Wrecks to earn 2 more cars (the Buggy V8 is especially useful for unlocking Roads and for Instant Challenges), and another car can be won by outrunning the cops 8 consecutive times (an easy way to do this is to use the roundabouts; keep going around, avoid collisions, and make sure you have enough momentum to keep the car rolling when the cops use that engine-stalling device).
  6. Your goal now is to elevate your Area Titles in both Areas. Start by doing Missions. Then, find an easy Instant Challenge and keep redoing it until you reach Competition Level 7 (this unlocks the Photo Site Holograms). Then, take Photos. Then, unlock more Roads until you obtain the "Buddy" title in both Areas. Ideally, the "Friend" title would be the goal to go for, but it's probably not worth the extra time and effort (at this stage) unless you really want to be able to buy Stage 4 upgrades.
  7. Since you won't yet have easy access to car dealers or tune shops when you arrive on Oahu, your best bet is to buy all the necessary cars and upgrades (plus the required Garage space) while still on Ibiza. See the table in the next step for the recommended cars to buy. If you want to be able to easily move some of your cars from Ibiza to Oahu, it's probably a good idea to keep track of where they are, so you'll know which houses to Exchange. Once you've bought the cars and any upgrades you think you might need, it's time to fly to Oahu. Your first task there will be to drive to your new Home. On the way, you can stop by the wreck site to earn a few more Discovery points.
  8. Now it's time to get another license and do some more racing. The Asphalt Racing School is nearest your Home and you can jump to there directly, but you can start with a different license (if you want to) by setting a new Objective. If you want to start with a C3 license, the Classic Racing School is about 30 miles from your Home or, if you want to start with a B3 license, the Off-Road Racing School is about 17 miles away. If you want to save yourself some driving time, you can go to the nearby Oahu1 realtor and buy Black Point House which gets you within 5 miles of the Classic Racing School and/or buy Lokelani House which gets you within 4 miles of the Off-Road Racing School. Alternatively, if you start by getting all 3 A licenses, you can buy Sandy Beach Dream which gets you within 4 miles of the first A1 championship. Once you've obtained your first Oahu license(s), do the championships that you're currently eligible for. Then, get the remaining licenses and do the remaining championships.

  9. Do Hawaii Cup 1 and then (optionally) take advantage of the second money-maker. Then, do the first 7 challenges of Hawaii Cup 2. When you have at least an hour of spare time, do the final challenge and then take advantage of the third money-maker, keeping in mind that this will be your last chance to easily earn a large sum, but also keeping in mind that you don't need to buy everything to reach the maximum Collection Level.
  10. At this stage, there should be enough unlocked roads to make it easier to get to Wrecks, Photo Sites, undone Duels, and Missions. Once you've done all of those, how you proceed will depend on what your goal is.

Alternative Path

While the
General Walkthrough focuses mainly on playing the game the way the developers meant it to be played, this walkthrough takes a more leisurely approach. The main purpose of writing this walkthrough was to show that gameplay doesn't necessarily have to be all about competition and game completion. If you don't care about those kinds of things (i.e., if you're more interested in driving rather than racing), there is actually still plenty to do, even if you only have a single license.
  1. Go through all of the preliminary steps of Getting Started. The rest of this walkthrough assumes the following: For any of the above that haven't yet been done, see the Getting Started section.
  2. With the preliminary steps done, it's now time to unlock some more Roads and earn a bit of money while doing so.
    1. Press [START] for the Pause Menu. Then, go to Options > Game Settings and set the Stake to $2,000 (be sure to press [X] to confirm and not [Circle] to cancel).
    2. Exit the Options screen and then go to Progress & Objectives > Collection > Vehicles and set the Objective to "Own 3 different vehicles". Then, enter Map mode, select the "Spots for Vehicles" tab, and then manually target Asian Cars (East Central part of the island, North of Ibiza City).
    3. Once you've reached Asian Cars, go back to Map mode and set the new target to the British Cars in the far NorthEast (the dealer that has the Caterham, not the one with the Aston Martins). On the way, keep an eye out for a bluish grey Citroen 2CV driven by Oxythan. Note: If you don't see the Citroen before reaching the dealer, just keep cruising around the river region (central and upper parts of Ibiza Area 2) until you do see it.
    4. When you see Oxythan's Citroen 2CV, initiate an Instant Challenge by flashing your headlights at it. Once the challenge has been accepted and the race has begun, go back to the Pause menu and take note of how much money you currently have. When the race finishes, press [X] to start a new race and keep doing that until you've won at least 50. At $2,000 per win, you'll know you've won 50 when you end up with $100,000 more than what you started with. Note that 50 wins will generally take somewhere around 2-3 hours to complete. However, since the Citroen is no match for the Lancia, you can afford to drive at pretty much your own pace, which basically makes it less like racing and more like cruising.
  3. At this stage, there should be enough unlocked Roads to make it a little bit easier to get to other activities. Doing enough of these will eventually earn you enough points to reach Global Level 10, which is the main goal in this step.
  4. Reaching Global Level 10 unlocks Oahu, where you'll acquire another 2-car House and have a whole new set of activities to choose from, many of which will be similar to those on Ibiza. At this stage, you're pretty much free to choose whatever activities you want to do next, but here are some suggestions:

Restarting

This section assumes that you've already played through TDU2 at least once and you just want an efficient way to start a new gamesave. This might be useful if you want to collect all cars and/or houses but didn't take advantage of the Cup
money-makers the first times around. Note that this section also assumes that you're running the original TDU2 v1.00 (offline only). If you're running an upgraded version, see Game Versions.

This section focuses mainly on the Championships and Cups. The idea is to use the License tests and Championship/Cup challenges to unlock Roads in not-so-nearby places. This section is divided into 3 parts and each part includes 3 adjacent tables. The topmost table shows an overview of the classes and cars, the middle table shows an overview of the activities, and the bottom table shows miscellaneous notes. The order in which the activities are done is semi-important; if done in the order shown, you can avoid having to drive long distances to reach other events.

1. Ibiza. The main goal here is to unlock the Ibiza Cup in a fairly efficient way. If you only want to collect all cars and/or houses, you could stop after you've earned a sufficient amount in Step 20. However, if you get through this part fairly quickly and you know you can get through Part 2 (see below) fairly easily, it's more efficient to instead use Hawaii Cup 1 (Step 18 of Part 2) as the main 'money-maker'.

 4. The Jane mission is the Time Attack to the Off-Road Racing School (the very first Mission).
 12. The Fontanelles house is handled by the Ibiza1 realtor.
 20. Be sure to take advantage of the money-maker to earn at least $3,000,000 more.

2. Ibiza, Oahu. If you followed Part 1 more-or-less to the letter, you should now be at Global Level 9 with only 5 more Discovery points needed to reach the next Level. The easiest way to earn those 5 points is to find a wreck, and a good candidate would be the one in the Airport parking lot. In the early stages on Oahu, if you want to buy a car and there's no nearby dealer, it might be easier/quicker to fly back to Ibiza to buy it there. Also, if you're only interested in car/house collecting, you can finish up with Step 18 after earning a sufficient amount (about $24,000,000 for all cars and up to $38,000,000 for all houses). Note that, since the total capacity of all houses is 280 and there are only 89 cars in TDU2 v1.00, it isn't necessary to buy all houses if you're only interested in the cars.

Low-Budget Example

This example is from a gamesave where the goal was to find out approximately how much it would cost to do the Championships and Cups with minimal spending in mind. I'm not sure why I thought this might be useful, but anyway... The first table below shows the expenses, while the second table shows the gameflow. The sum of the amounts spent is $1,059,663 and the amount in the kitty after Step 54 is $14,387,592.
