Het is winter. Bij min tien graden en een gevoelstemperatuur van min vijftien of daaromtrent gaan we toch maar wandelen. Dit is Maryland Heights boven Harpers Ferry. Vorig jaar in maart waren we hier ook al, maar dan aan de overkant. In de burgeroorlog - daar loop je hier altijd al snel tegenaan - was hier een fort. De resten zijn nog te zien aan het eind van de wandeling. <<  

It is winter. Minus 10 centigrade and it feels like minus 15. Nevertheless, we go hiking. this is Maryland Heights overlooking Harpers Ferry. Last year in March we were here too, but on the other side. During the Civil War - you are bound to run into it here - there was a fort up here. The remains are on view at the end of this hike. <<  

Washington National Opera has a studio for promising young singers, and directors, the Domingo-Cafritz Young Singers Program. By way of experiment, this year's class performs Mozarts Cosi fan Tutte in the studio in Takoma Park in North East Washington. With a string quartet, a grand piano and a harpsichord, and a very inventive set they achieve great results. The director and the designer also provide an introduction to the opera. Cosi fan Tutte is a wonderful opera with a lot of ensemble singing. It was beautiful.<<  

Dit is het atrium van Thurgood Marshall Federal Judicial Building. Daar huist het Federal Judicial Center, dat onder meer fungeert als denktank voor de federale gerechten van de VS. De denktank had een rondetafeldiscussie georganiseerd waarin federale rechters spraken over hun IT-gebruik. Dankzij dr. Elizabeth Wiggins, die ik in december ontmoette in Amman, mocht ik meedoen. De gerechten zijn hier wat verder met het gebruik van IT dan wat ik tot nu toe in het grootste deel van Europa heb gezien. In een presentatie voor recht en IT-specialisten over "IT changes the judiciary" twee jaar geleden had ik wat uitspraken gedaan over hoe de ontwikkelingen zich zouden kunnen voltrekken. Het was leuk om te zien dat de meeste thema's erin zaten: noodzaak van hogere organisatiegraad en discipline, vraag naar meer consistentie, de notie dat er verschillende werkprocessen zijn waardoor een enkele applicatie niet voldoet. <<  

This is the atrium of Thurgood Marshall Federal Judicial Building. The Federal Judicial Center, the think tank for the federal courts of the US, is located here. They have set up a round table discussion with federal judges about their use of IT. Dr Elizabeth Wiggins, whom I met in Amman in December, got me invited. In their use of IT, the courts here have advanced beyond what I have seen in most of Europe. In a presentation for Law and IT specialists tow years ago, about how IT changes the judiciary, I made some statements about future developments. It was nice to see that most themes were present: the need for better organization and discipline, more consistency, and idea that different work processes require that there is more than one support application. <<

Chinatown, DC viert op zondag 18 februari nieuwjaar. Het is berekoud, en halverwege het vuurwerk begint het te sneeuwen. Op de foto de grote draak. Het rode snoer is het klappertjesvuurwerk. Chinatown, DC is niet groot. Op deze foto is bijna de helft ervan goed te zien.

On Sunday February 18 Chinatown, DC celebrates the new year. It is very cold, and half way through the fireworks snow flurries start coming down. In the picture, the big dragon. The red rope in the middle is the fireworks. Chinatown, DC is not very big. Almost half of it can be seen clearly in this picture.

Op 22 februari gaan we weer naar Strathmore concert hall. Foto's van Frans Lanting worden er begeleid door de Baltimore Symphony Rochestra onder leiding van de nieuwe chefdirigent: Marin Alsop. De muziek, van Philip Glass, is een opdrachtwerk voor het Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, Op de foto links de grote schermen waarop de foto's langskwamen, maar ik de kleine schermen waarop Marin Alsop kon zien welke muziek bij welke foto's hoort. Na afloop is er discussie met de zaal. In het midden: dirigent Marin Alsop. De eerste vrouw die in de VS een toporkest leidt. Ze heeft gestudeerd bij Seji Ozawa en Leonard Bernstein. <<

Links: Frans Lanting, een van de beste natuurfotografen ter wereld. Vroeger maakte hij de foto's voor Grasduinen. Nu staan zijn foto's vooral in de National Geographic. Al die prachtige pinguins en kleurige leguanen zijn van hem. Het boek bij dit concert heet Life. Wim koopt het boek, een fikse turf, en Frans Lanting signeert!

On February 22 we go back to Strathmore Concert Hall. Photographs by Frans Lanting are displayed, accompanied by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under its new chief conductor Marin Alsop. Philip Glass wrote the music, for the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. <<  

On the left the large screens that displayed the pictures as well as the three small screens Marin Alsop used to direct the orchestra in sync with the pictures. After the concert there is Q&A with the audience. Marin Alsop, center, is the first woman chief conductor of a major American orchestra. She studied with Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein. On the left: Frans Lanting, one of the top nature photographers in the world. His pictures are all those sleek penguins and colorful iguanas in the National Geopgraphic. He started out in Holland with Grasduinen. The book accompanying the concert is called Life. It is a hefty tome. Wim buys a copy, and Frans Lanting signs it. <<  

We werken door aan onze cultuur. Op 24 februari gaan we naar het Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre om het Synetic Theatre in actie te zien. De kern van de groep zijn via Europa uit Georgie gekomen en werken nu in Washington. Het is een soort danstheater, heel energiek en ritmisch. Ze doen Macbeth, maar dan zonder woorden. Het is hun bijdrage aan het Shakespeare Festival. Wij vonden het prachtig. Eerst deed het vreemd aan, maar na een tijdje vonden we het erg goed. We voelen ons erg thuis nu, want bij elke voorstelling komen we wel een bekende tegen. Leuk is dat.

We keep working at our cultural life. On February 24 we go to the Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre to see Synetic Theatre. The core members of this group have come from Georgia by way of Europe and they now work in Washington. It is a kind of movement theater, very energetic and rhythmic. They perform Macbeth, but without words. It is their contribution to the Shakespeare Festival. It was strange at first, but after a while we really liked it. We feel very much at home, for in each show we run into someone we know. Very nice.
