Nu we
over een paar maanden uit Washington vertrekken, willen we nog zo veel
mogelijk dingen doen.
Shakespeare Festival in Washington. Op 5 januari musiceert de Folger Consort
in Washington National Cathedral. Zoals meestal mogen er geen toto's gemaakt
worden, dus hier een plaatje van het podium zoals het Consort het achterliet.
Twee dagen eerder stond hier de baar van Gerald Ford. En vorig
jaar zat ik met het Washington Cathedral Choral Society achter het
koorhek en zongen wij het Requiem van Mozart onder leiding van J. Reilly
Lewis. << |

In a couple
of months, we will be leaving Washington. So we still want to do and see
as much as we can.
Shakespeare festival in Washington. January 5: Performed in the great English
Gothic nave of the Washington National Cathedral, this concert celebrates
masterpieces by two of Shakespeare's greatest musical contemporaries. Soaring
to match the vaulted reaches of the cathedral, William Byrd's magnificent
motets for voices are balanced by the intimate intensity of John Dowland's
Passionate Pavans for string band and lute (source: festival blurb). <<

gezelschap zangers bij het Consort: Ensemble Accordia. Vijf zangers, afkomstig
uit de Tallis Scholars, the King's Singers, The Sixteen, the Gabrieli Consort
en the Theatre of Voices. De wereldtop dus. De componisten, Willam Byrd
en John Dowland waren tijdgenoten van Shakespeare.Kathleen

To inaugurate Shakespeare
in Washington, the city-wide festival honoring the Bard, there will be songs
associated with the plays as well. The Accordia Ensemble whose members sang
with the Tallis Scholars, the King's Singers, The Sixteen, the Gabrieli
Consort and the Theatre of Voices perform with the Folger Consort. They
are the world's top ancient music performers.
Two days before, Gerald Ford's casket stood in this same spot. And last
year, I sat in the collegiate section behind the screen to sing Mozart's
Requiem with J. Reilly Lewis and the Washington Cathedral Choral Society.

In de tweede
week van januari komen Caroline en Jolyon uit Sydney naar Washington, met
Elliott. Hij is nu vier maanden, en het verschil is enorm. De
vorige keer dat wij hem zagen, in Sydney, had hij nog geen naam, en
hij sliep overal doorheen.
Veel uit eten ook deze maand: Op 7 januari eten wij bij Ronald Luttikhuizen
en zijn Maaike die net hun huis in de Watergraafsmeer hebben verkocht. Ronald
doet een statistiekproject in Afrika, en ik mag hem komen helpen met een
presentatie over het meten van justitie en veiligheid. << |

In the
second week of January, Caroline and Jolyon arrive from Sydney with Elliott.
He is four months old now, and the difference is enormous.
Last time we saw him, in Sydney, he did not even have a name yet, and
he slept right through our visit.
Lots of dinner out this month. We have dinner in the apartment of Ronald
Luttikhuizen and his Maaike, they have just sodl their house in Amsterdam.
He runs a statistics project in Africa, and I will help hium with a presentation
on meausring justice performance. << |
| Op 9 januari eten we
tijdens Restaurant Week met Line en Oliver bij Mendocino Grill. Oliver Lorenz
is een jonge collega van mij. Hij moet zorgen dat hij hier werk houdt. Hij
assisteert mijn collega Luba Beardsley bij het organiseren van Measuring
Justice, een project dat een meetinstrument voor de justice sector moet
ontwikkelen. Line is zijn grote liefde. Zij is Koreaans en komt uit Kazakhstan;
ze werkt nu voor een transatlantische denktank hier in Washington. En dan
vieren we met Linn Hammergren haar 61e verjaardag bij Patowmack
Farm. << |

Two days later, Restaurant
Week, we take Oliver and Line out to dinner at Mendocino Grill. Oliver works
with my colleague Luba Beardsley on Measuring Justice, a project to develop
a measuring tool for the justice sector. Line is Olivers great love. Se
is a Korean from Kazakhstan. She now works here for a transatlantic think
tank. And then, we celebrate Linn Hammergrens birthday at Patowmack
Farm. . << |
Als je hier wilt gaan
wandelen kun je kiezen tussen een park en een slagveld uit de burgeroorlog.
Grote kans dat het park van je keuze alsnog een salgveld blijkt te zijn.
Na Bull Run vorig zomer gaan we nu naar Antietam. Hier verloren op 1 dag
meer dan 21000 soldaten het leven, een absoluut record. Antietam Creek is
een lieflijk riviertje dat zich door een mooi dal slingert. Aan de overkant
is een rand. Daar overheen kwamen de Noordelijken. Tegen de middag was er
een zware veldslag rond de brug op de foto. Tegen de avond hadden de Zuidelijken
zich teruggetrokken.
Op 25 januari hebben we bij de Bank Albie Sachs op bezoek. Een heel bijzondere
man. Hij is raadsheer in het constitutionele hof van Zuid-Afrika. In mijn

If you want to go hiking
around here, you can choose between a park and a Civil War battlefield.
Chances are you choose a park and it will turn out to be a battlefield as
well. After Bull Run, we now go anc check out Antietam Battlefield. This
is where the most soldiers ever lost their lives in one day: over 21.000
troops. Antietam Creek is a beautiful stream meandering through a lovely
valley. On the other side, a ridge. This is the ridge the Northern army
had to cross. By midday, the bridge, in the picture, was heavily fought
over. By nightfall, the Southern army had withdrawn.
On January 25, Albie Sachs comes to the Bank for a talk. He is a justice
in the constitutional court of South Africa. My
blog has more, in Dutch this time. << |
| Het hoogtepunt komt
aan het eind van de maand. Klaus en Wayne trouwen in Toronto, Canada. Wim
maakt de foto's, dus we zijn zo goed als overal bij. De ceremonie in het
gemeentehuis van Toronto is heel goed verzorgd. Dit is hier een soort industrie
aan het worden, dat is duidelijk. Goed voor de plaatselijke horeca. K+W
logeren in "King Eddie", het Amstelhotel van Toronto. Daar is
dit weekend ook het Canadian Singer-Songwriter Festival, dus er staan voortdurend
tv-camera's op de stoep en in de hal. Helaas weten wij niet hoe Joni Mitchell
en Kate en Anna McGarrigle eruit zien... << |

The high point of the
month is Klaus and Wayne's wedding in Toronto, Canada. Wim takes the pictures.
The ceremony in Toronto City Hall is very well done. This kinfd of thing
is becoming an industry here. Good for the hotel and restaurant business
too. K+W stay at the "King Eddie", the local Ritz. They also host
the Canadian Singer-Songwriter Festival, so there are tv camera's on the
doorstep and in the lobby. Unfortunately, we do not know what Joni Mitchell
and Kate and Anna McGarrigle look like. << |
| Weer veel
eten dus, maar vooral veel gezelligheid. Ongeveer 25 vrienden van Klaus
en Wayne zijn uit de hele wereld aan komen vliegen. Leuke mensen. Wij bezoeken
ook nog het Royal Ontario Museum en de Art Gallery of Ontario. Ze worden
allebei verbouwd. het ROM krijgt een glazen puist en het AGO een voorkant
van Frank Gehry. Het ROM heeft Inuit totempalen. Die hieronder is zo groot
dat hij door het dak naar binnen is getakeld. Er is ook een versie die zegt
dat het museum eromheen gebouwd is. Het ROM heeft ook een hele mooie collectie
Chinese antiquiteiten zoals grote en kleine soldaten. En het is echt winter
in Toronto. << |

Lots of
food again, but also a lot of good friendship. 25 of K+W's friends have
come from all over the globe. Nice people. Wim and I also visit the Royal
Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Both have building work going
on. the ROM will get a glass wing and the AGO a front by Frank Gehry. The
ROM has a wonderful collection of Chinese antiquities, large and small soldiers.
It also has Inuit totem poles. They were either hoisted into the building
through the roof, or the museum was actually built around it. We can not
figure which. It is really winter in Toronto. << |
Op de laatste dag van januari komt Lars Rehof bij ons eten. Hij wil wat
van Wims foto's kopen. En als hij in Washington blijft - zijn contract loopt
nu nog tot juni - wil hij ook ons appartement wel overnemen. We zullen het
zien, het zou een mooie oplossing zijn voor iedereen. Lars heeft een trust
fund opgezet voor het bevorderen van mensenrechten, betaald door de Scandinavische
landen. << |

On the last day of January, my colleague Lars Rehof comes to dinner. He
wants to buy some of Wim's pictures. And if he stays in DC after his contract
runs ou tin June he also wants to take over our apartment when we leave.
We will see. It would be a nice solution for all of us. Lars has set up
a trust fund for justice and human rights in the Bank, supported by the
Nordic countries. << |
