De Hunger / Hungerink


"De Hunger" or "Hungerink" is a farm with a long history situated in Noordijk near Neede. The region is called "de Achterhoek", and can be found in the east of the Netherlands between Arnhem and Enschede. References to it date back as far as 1300 [pictures]. People in "de Achterhoek" mostly derived their surname from their farm, which was often formed by adding the suffix -ink to a Chistian name, occupation, or topographical description [origin of the name].

As far as I know all Hungerink's living now stem from Catharina Hungerink, daughter of Egbert Hungerinck and Machtelt Veldincks who married 20 october 1720 and lived at "de Hunger". There were no sons to inherit the farm. It went to Catharina who married Garrit Hennink to join her there. Since the farm name was most important in the Achterhoek, the children were called Hungerink, and Garrit already at the christening of his first son signed as Hungerink as well.

Before 1700 the name Hungerink was mostly spelled Hungerinck. Sometimes one finds Hungering. The name is very rare in the Netherlands now, estimated at less than a 30 persons. After Gerrit Hendrik Hungerink went to America in 1866, the name also occurs there, mainly around the town of Holland in Michigan. From searches on the internet it seems that around 30 Hungerinks lived or still live there.

The Family Tree of the Hungerink's has been established now, accounting for almost all of those who live and lived in the Netherlands since 1650, updated to around 1970. Here is an overview. Recently through this website the American branch could be established. What remains are the more recent Dutch developements, and the linkage to some Hungerink's (and Hungering) of before 1850, whose lines ended. In early times a Hungerink might have settled in Stokkum where in 1475 a farm called "Hungering" was mentioned. Read about the Stokkum farms here. A first draft of the Hungerink tree for Stokkum is available here. A mystery to me is the occurrance of Hungerink in Eefde near Zutphen. It is found in Groot Hungerink, a "Noble House" referred to in 1494 as "Hungerynck", deriving its name from the farm "Hungerink" mentioned in 1318. [details]

The American Branch.


Gerrit Hendrik Hungerink, founder of the American Hungerinks, was born 14 march 1827 in Neede, went to America 18 august 1866, and arrived in Vriesland Mi, 13 september 1866. He died 19 july 1900, Vriesland Michigan. Here is the story.
On 8 april 1868 he married Gerritjen (Gertrude) Morgenstern, born 28 june 1840 in Neede. She died 12 march 1923, Vriesland, Michigan.
They had six children:

Since Graham Wesleys data are correct it can only mean Garrett Wesley is meant to be Gerrit William, and Hungerink-A is "a Hungerink" in fact Gerrit Hendrik.
