How to set up your direct link

On this page you will find everything you need to make a direct cable connection from you Psion to your PC running OS/2 or eComStation. No extra hardware or software is needed. HyperAccess Lite is part of the OS/2 Bonuspak and should be installed on your system (if not, install this program first). The Comms application is allready installed on your Psion. You can start it from the 'Extra's bar'.
This setup guide covers four parts: setting up HyperAccess on your PC; setting up Comms on your Psion, file transfer from your computer to the Psion and from your Psion to the computer.

Part A Setting up HyperAccess Lite
Step 1 Install HyperAccess Lite (if not already available on your computer). The program files can be found on the following locations:
  • OS/2 Warp 3: On the BonusPak CDROM or diskettes supplied with the operating system (use SETUP.CMD to start the installer);
  • OS/2 Warp 4: On the OS/2 Warp 4 CDROM (use selective install from the System Setup directory);
  • eComStation: On the eCS Add On CD (use WiseManager to install the program).
Step 2 Start HyperAccess Lite (halite.exe). When started the program shows you its 'Phonebook' (click here for a screenshot (29K)
Step 3 Point your mouse at the 'direct connect' icon, click right to go to the main screen. Open the 'Properties' menu and click 'Communications'. Check the settings on the 'communications tab' and change them if necessary:
  • phone number: leave this field blank
  • settings: 8-none-1
  • baudrate: set to the maximum baudrate your Psion can handle (115.200 baud for series 5MX and above)
  • port name: select the com-port where your Psion is connected to
  • port setup: use hardware handshaking
  • modem: direct connect (cable)
On the 'terminal settings tab' check if terminal emulator is set to 'auto-detect'. Then close the properties notebook. On this point you can use 'File -> Save As...' to give this profile it's own name. If you don't the settings will be saved in the 'direct connect' profile.

Part B Setting up Comms
Step 1 Make sure the remote link on the Psion is OFF. To do this, select 'Remote link' on the 'Tools' menu in the System screen and ensure 'OFF' is displayed in the 'Link' line.
Start the Comms application on your Psion (Tap the Extras bar icon, then tap the Comms program icon).
Step 2 Tap the 'Set up' button on the right side of the screen or use 'communication settings' on the 'Tools' menu to open the Communications Settings dialog. Make sure the following settings are set on the first tab: (click here for a screenshot (8K)
  • Use comms port: Serial port 0
  • Baud rate: input the same baud rate here as you did in HyperAccess
  • Databits: 8
  • Stopbits: 1
  • Parity: none
Next, go to the 'handshake' tab and check the RTS/CTS option. All other checkboxes should be left blank. Tap the OK-button to close the dialog box.
On this point you can use 'Save settings as...' on the 'File' menu to give this profile it's own name. If you don't, the settings will be saved in the default comms-profile.

Part C Sending files from your computer to the Psion
Step 1 Make sure the remote link on the Psion is OFF. To do this, select 'Remote link' on the 'Tools' menu in the System screen and ensure 'OFF' is displayed in the 'Link' line.
Step 2 Start the Comms application on your Psion (Tap the Extras bar icon, then tap the Comms program icon or tab the profile you've created in part B) and follow these steps:
  • Select 'Recieve file' on the 'Transfer' menu, or tap the 'Recieve file' button on the right site of the screen to open the 'recieve files' dialog box.
  • Set the file transfer protocol to YModem (batch), XModem or ASCII (plain text). Your Psion is able to send and recieve files using one of these three protocols. If you can, use the XModem or YModem (batch) protocol to transfer files, as these include their own error-checking. YModem allows you to recieve (or send) more than one file at a time and it doesn't require you to enter a filename when recieving files. It also allows the transfer of multiple files at a time.
  • the name of the file you want to recieve (not needed when using YModem (batch),
  • the folder where the recieved files are to be stored on your Psion
  • the disk where this folder is to be found.
  • Tap OK when finished.
Your Psion is now ready to recieve files from your computer.
Step 3 Start HyperAccess Lite on your computer and follow these steps:
  • Double click the 'direct connect' icon from the Phonebook (29K) (or use the profile you've created in part A).
  • Select 'Send' from the 'Transfer' menu or click the 'Send file to host' button
  • Enter the filename and protocol you want to use (must be the same as entered on the Psion, (screenshot (9K))
  • Click the 'Send' button to start sending the file to your Psion
Step 4 During the file-transfer you will see a progress indicator window on your computer as well as on your Psion. Click here to see how it looks on my Psion 5MX (6K). When the transfer is completed both the HyperAccess and Comms application can be terminated. You will find the recieved files on in the directory you specified on your Psion.

Part D Sending files from the Psion to your computer
Step 1 Make sure the remote link on the Psion is OFF. To do this, select 'Remote link' on the 'Tools' menu in the System screen and ensure 'OFF' is displayed in the 'Link' line.
Step 2 Start HyperAccess Lite on your computer and follow these steps:
  • Double click the 'direct connect' icon from the (Phonebook (29K) (or use the profile you've created in step A).
  • Select 'Recieve' from the 'Transfer' menu or click the 'Recieve file from host' button
  • Enter the filename or directory. When using YModem there is no need to enter a filename.
  • Choose the protocol you want to use for file transfer (YModem or XModem: Hyperaccess doesn't support ASCII when recieving files).
  • Click the 'Recieve' button.
HyperAccess is now ready to recieve files from your Psion.
Step 3 Start the Comms application on your Psion (Tap the Extras bar icon, then tap the Comms program icon or tab the profile you've created in step B) and follow these steps:
  • Select 'Send file' on the 'Transfer' menu, or tap the 'Send file' button on the right site of the screen to open the 'Send files' dialog box.
  • Set the file transfer protocol to Ymodem (batch) or XModem (since HyperAccess doesn't support ASCII when recieving files your choice is limited to XModem and YModem). Make sure that the file protocol used is the same as you entered in HyperAccess.
  • Enter the name(s) of the file(s) you want to send (multiple file transfer is only supported by the YModem protocol),
  • Enter the name of the folder where these files reside on your Psion,
  • Enter the disk where this folder is located.
  • Tap OK to start the file transfer.
Step 4 During the file-transfer you will see a progress indicator window on your computer as well as on your Psion. When the transfer is completed both the HyperAccess and Comms application can be terminated. You will find the recieved files in the directory you specified in HyperAccess.
