Tanzania part 2 : Crater Highland Trek,

6-11 July 2004

The day after decending Lengai, July 6th 2004, we started the Crater Highland Trek. The trek normally runs from Nainokanoka village, via the Embulbul Depression to Bulati village on the first day. From there to Embakaai Crater Lake rim. The third day to Naiyobi village to end the trek at the base of the Ol Doinyo Lengai on the forth day. Since we were already at the base of the Lengai, we did the trek in reverse order.  We booked with a company called Nyika Treks and started with two cooks, a guide, two donkey drivers, and four donkeys.

Day 1 : From Ol doinyo Lengai base to Nayobi village

With legs aching from the Lengai decent, the first stretch to Naiyobi village was hard work. We climbed about 1300m up the Rift Valley wall, and got a very nice view on the south-western side of Lengai.

Day 2 : From Naiyobi village to Embakaai Crater Rim

Embakaai Crater Lake is like a pit in the Tanzanian highlands. The rims contains beautiful junglelike vegetation. When decended there are traces of hyena's and buffalo's. Around this soda lake we saw  lots of flamingo's. After ascending again to the rim a camp was set up.

Day 3 : From Empakaai Crater Rim to Bulati village

This day the track continued on the highlands. The camp site was set up near the Maasai village of Bulati. We helped local teachers with some pencils. A lot of Maasai walked by wondering what this camp was all about. It seemed that they found us very interesting.

Day 4 : From Bulati village to Nainokanoka village

The last day we went through the desolate Embulbul Depression to the village of Nainokanoka where we ended the trek. In total we hiked about 80km both on and of trails.
