Tanzania part 3 : Ngorongoro Caldera Safari

11 July 2004

While we were in Tanzania anyway, why not do a safari ? On July 11th 2004 we did a game drive in the Ngorongoro caldera, Tanzania. This area is formed by the collapse of an ancient volcano. Now it is a 250 km2 area,  about 600m deep and surrounded by the old volcano wall. From one side to the other is about 25km. It is part of the 8300 km2 Ngorongoro Conservation Area.  Most tourists pay this caldera a visit in the form of a game drive. That is watching animals from a vehicle.  And that is what we did for a little rest between the part 2 Crater Highland Trek and part 4 Climb of Mt. Hanang.

The caldera contains soda and fresh water lakes. And there is plenty of other food around for all kinds of animals like lions, buffalos, monkeys and elephants. Animals can come and go freely in to the caldera but most stay due to the plentyful food and water. Here are pictures showing some of the animals we have seen. I left the photo with a tiny cheetah out. Unfortunatly we did not see any rhino.
