Quirks and Features

The Bad
  • There are a number of flaws related to the cars:
    • Prize cars can only be won once per event.
    • The traditional Trade feature is missing.
    • Some of the cars at the dealers seem a bit misplaced. It just seems odd that there are classic cars at the New car dealers and zero-mileage cars at the Used car dealer.
    • Premium cars and Standard cars are in separate tabs in your Garage, and there doesn't seem to be any way to view all of your cars without switching between the two tabs. It would've been more convenient to have all cars in one place and have search/sort options for Premium and Standard.
    • There are some ridiculously over-priced cars, a few of which will break the bank which has a ridiculously-low limit of Cr.20,000,000.
    • Any car that costs Cr.500,000 or more is worthless for selling; the car can be removed from your Garage, but you won't get any credits for it.
    • The Citroen GT Concept has battery usage in all events. For races where there is no fuel usage, it doesn't seem fair to penalize electric cars with battery usage. For the Dream Car championship, a full charge isn't even enough to finish the final Nurburgring race.
  • There are flaws related to the Used Car Dealer:
    • There is no onscreen Day counter to make it easier to know when the lineup changes.
    • There is no sane wraparound, or possibly no wraparound at all. The wraparound in GT4 is 700 so it would've been reasonable to expect it to be somewhere around 1000 in GT5.
    • It takes way too long before the Gran Turismo Formula car becomes available at the Used Car dealer; the first one doesn't show up until after Day 1500. An experienced player will reach Level 24 before Day 300 and even a beginner will reach that Level long before Day 1000. A required car should be more easily available and shouldn't depend on checking the Used car line-ups for such a huge amount of Days. Also, it seems a bit odd that a Level 23 event (the Formula Gran Turismo World Championship) would require a Level 24 car; this seems to suggest that the Formula and Dream Car events were switched around at some stage in program development.
  • The traditional License-based system has been replaced with a Level-based system which has flaws:
    • Normal gameplay requires too much repetition. At some point, you will inevitably be forced to redo things to earn more Experience points to reach the Level required for other events. The way the Level system is implemented, it can take several weeks or months to reach a point where you're eligible for all events.
    • Whether or not you're allowed to buy cars not only depends on how many credits you have, you're also restricted by the Level you're currently at.
    • There are too many Levels for the amount of events included. This will be especially noticeable when you get to the Endurance Series. In my opinion, doing the Le Mans 24H once should've been enough to unlock the Nurburgring 24H, but it's not; you have to do the Le Mans race (or the equivalent in other events) 2-4 times to reach the Level required for the Nurburgring race.
  • B-Spec mode is seriously flawed:
    • In Gran Turismo 4, it's possible to have an AI driver share some of the driving, which is especially useful for the longer Endurance races. In GT5, however, this is no longer possible because events are either completely A-Spec or completely B-Spec. Also, GT4's 3x accelerator in Race Monitor is missing from GT5.
    • The list of B-Spec events is the same as in A-Spec, but the restrictions and lengths of the events are such that it takes much longer to achieve the same results. This will often leave you with nothing (or very little) to do for long periods of time, especially in the later stages of gameplay. Not only does this deprive you of your own driving time, it also puts extra wear 'n' tear on the hardware and game disc. And, for anyone concerned about environmental and/or economical issues, B-Spec will most likely be seen as a gross waste of electricity.
  • The Nurburgring 24-Hour race deviates quite a bit from the real life event. In the real life race, the grid lineup has never included LMP or Can-Am cars, as far as I know. GT5's inclusion of the Chaparral 2J in any 24H race is a bit odd (to say the least) since the car has no headlights.
  • Bug in the GT Rally code that handles stage results: If you pass all 3 opponents and there's too big of a gap between you and the second-place car (enough for the stage results screen to show only your result before going to the next screen), your overall championship lead only increases by 10 seconds (should be 30+).
  • It appears that a GT5 gamesave includes data that ties it to a specific user and, apparently, a specific machine. This not only means that you can't start a new gamesave using an existing one (e.g., a "QuickStart"), it also means that a backup or copy of your GT5 gamesave will be unusable if you ever need to replace a broken PS3.
  • If you're familiar with other titles in the Gran Turismo series, the numerous flaws in GT5 can easily make you wonder if this is beta software... until you realize that most of the flaws were intentionally put in place by the developers. It's possible that some of the flaws were meant as security measures for online gameplay but, if that's so, the developers should've fixed potential problems at the server side, not the user side.
  • Additiional quirks in GT5 v1.13 :
    • There is no "Open All" option in Car Delivery.
    • The program doesn't create a backup gamesave on startup. This initially seemed like it might be a good thing for low-resource PS3s like the 12GB/GO version, but it turns out that a v1.13 gamesave with 1 car is about 1333k, while a v2.07 gamesave with 1 car is about 326k. For v2.07, the combined gamesave plus backup still only take up about half the space that a single v1.13 gamesave does.
    • There is no "Suspend" option for Endurance races. This is a huge problem for the 24-hour races in A-Spec mode unless you have human co-drivers to share some of the driving, or unless you don't mind leaving the game on Pause for a long period of time.
  • Additiional quirks in GT5 v1.00 :
    • The Garage in v1.00 includes a limited version of "Settings" called "Tuning" which doesn't allow buying parts or choosing tires. As far as I can tell, tire choice can only be set via a Race menu's Driving Options. Also, there is no Power Limiter in Tuning, so there's no easy way to set the power for events where a maximum power restriction is imposed (e.g., Rally events).
    • Credits and experience points are much harder to earn in v1.00 than in any other version of GT5 that I know of.
    • A v1.00 gamesave has the "Lock" attribute set to "Copying Prohibited". This means that there is no easy way to create a backup that can be reverted to.
    • In Endurance races, the Pitstop dialog closes automatically, even in A-Spec mode. This makes it impossible to park in your pitbox unless you Pause the game (which stops the clock and makes a long race even longer).
The Good
  • Includes a Zoom feature ([R1] by default) that makes it a bit easier to read text on small screens.
  • Includes an in-game User's Manual.
  • Includes lots of interesting car info which can be viewed in your Garage or at a dealer.
  • When you acquire a car, you'll often also acquire a paint item that can be used to repaint another car. Since most road cars can be repainted, it won't matter so much if you win or buy a car in a color that you don't like; in most cases, you can simply repaint it.
  • The 24-hour Le Mans and Nurburgring races include changing weather and lighting conditions. This is a huge improvement over Gran Turismo 4 where the 24-hour races are held in 24 hours of daylight. Variable weather can also be seen on the Monza and Suzuka tracks in various other events.
  • Features in GT5 v1.13, v2.07, and v2.17, but NOT in GT5 v1.00 :
    • Most upgrades can be bought while in Settings, so you don't necessarily have to visit the Parts Shop. You can access Settings from your Garage or from a Race menu. While in your Garage, it's even possible to upgrade a car without switching to it.
    • When you visit a car dealer, cars that you already own will be checkmarked. This is especially useful if your goal is to collect all cars since checking your Garage isn't as easy as it is in previous releases in the Gran Turismo series.
  • Features in GT5 v1.00, but NOT in GT5 v1.13, v2.07, or v2.17 :
    • Requires less data to be pre-installed before first-time startup.
    • The Buick Special has a year assigned to it, making it eligible for more events than the non-dated version found in other versions of GT5.

The Cars

Car List

In the table below, Drv is Drivetrain, Lv is the Level required to buy/win the car, BHP is Brake HorsePower, Kg is weight in Kilograms, PP is the car's rating expressed in Performance Points, and St is the State that the car was in when the BHP and PP
power data was collected. The Mods column shows the modifications that can be bought for the car: A=Aero, C=Color, O=Offroad, P=Power, R=Racemods, W=Wheels. Note that the data for the Mods column was collected while running GT5 v2.07; if you're running an older version, the 'W' data may only apply to Premium cars (i.e., it may not be possible to buy wheels for Standard cars). For the Acquire column, 'A' means that the car is available in Arcade mode, 'N' means that the car can be bought from a New car dealer, 'U' means the car can be bought from the Used car dealer, and 'P' means that the car can be won as a Prize. The XN following 'P:' represents an A-Spec / B-Spec event (A-L) or other event (M-T). Cars that can be bought from a New car dealer are always Premium, while cars that can be bought from the Used car dealer are always Standard. For the 6 cars that can't be bought ('--' for Price), the Car column will include an appended bracketted letter that shows whether it's [P]remium or [S]tandard.

Miscellaneous Prize Cars

The table below is mainly meant to serve as reference for the Acquire column of the
Car List. For the Prize Car column, an appended question mark ('?') means that the info was taken from various sources on GameFAQs and, since I've never actually won the marked car in the listed event, I can't confirm that the info is correct. Note that, for T4 (Level 24 Class Ticket), only 1 of the 3 cars is awarded per Ticket (see GT5 GameSaves if you want to choose which car you'll acquire).

Starter Cars

Before you can enter any events in GT Mode, you'll need to be "in" a car (i.e., there has to be a current car shown at the top right of the GT Mode screen). How you acquire your first car depends on which
version of GT5 you're currently running. For v2.02 or later, you can go to Car Delivery and press [Square] to redeem your free Toyota 86 GT. For v1.13 or earlier, you'll need to shop around for a Level 0 car that's within the initial Cr.20,000 budget. Although there are several cars (both New and Used) to choose from, the table below includes only a selected few of them. All of these cars are capable of winning the A1 and A3 events in stock or near-stock form. The Also Useful For column shows other events that the car can be used for, at a later stage, when full upgrades are easily affordable.

A-Spec / B-Spec Events

Although A-Spec and B-Spec are separate modes in GT5, their events have enough in common to warrant combining them in a single table. In the first column of the table below, the number in parentheses is the Level required for participation. Other restrictions are listed on the first line below the event name. Note that the tire restriction applies to B-Spec only. The line below the restrictions shows the PP rating and types of cars that can make up the field; you can use that info to get a general idea of what kind of car to use for that event. For the Races column, numbered races are part of a Championship while bullets (•) denote Single Races. The numbers after the colon (:) are the number of laps for A-Spec and B-Spec unless the number is followed by an 'H' meaning Hours; an appended 'w' means that variable Weather is implemented. The Rewards column shows the A-Spec and B-Spec rewards for completing all of the races of the event with Gold trophies. Note that the prize car can only be won once. For a list of recommended cars, see
below.

The table below includes a selection of cars that might be useful for the events listed above. For the first column, events prefixed with a caret (^) are ones where the car may need maximum upgrades and proper tuning. For the second column, the text in parentheses shows how the car can be acquired. A price preceded by a 'U' means that the car can be bought from the Used Car Dealer (subject to availability), while an event in parentheses means that the car can be won (see A-Spec / B-Spec Events for A-L or Miscellaneous Prize Cars for M-T). For other car info, see the Car List above.

Licenses

Unlike in most other titles in the Gran Turismo series, normal gameplay in GT5 does not require licenses. Instead, you become eligible for other events by reaching a certain level, and this applies to pretty much all events, including license tests. In the section headers of the table below, the number in parentheses is the level required to be able to take the tests for that license. Note that, although licenses aren't required for normal gameplay, obtaining all 6 licenses does count for about 25% game completion. For a list of cars awarded for obtaining a license, see
Miscellaneous Prize Cars.

The table below shows the amount of experience points that can be earned per license test. Note that points are only awarded once per medal for each test; for example, if you've already earned Silver for a test, you can earn more points by passing the same test with Gold but not with Bronze or Silver.

Special Events

The Special Events section of GT Mode includes events for a variety of vehicles ranging from karts to a super fast fantasy prototype. If you don't mind a bit of a challenge, these events provide an ideal way to earn credits and experience points without having to spend a lot on cars and upgrades. In fact, if you're running GT5 v2.02 or later, it's possible to go quite a long way without spending anything at all. The various events aren't initially available but can be unlocked by reaching the levels shown in bold in the overview below. Appended numbers correspond to the Skill Level: 1=Beginner, 2=Intermediate, 3=Advanced, 4=Expert.
 1: Kart1 2: NAS14: TGear16: AMG17: Kart28: TGear29: NAS210: Rally112: AMG2
 13: GTour15: Rally216: SLRally17: Kart318: AMG319: TGear320: Rally321: NAS324: AMG4
If you're just starting out, you'll need to reach Level 1 (by earning Xp.500) in either A-Spec, B-Spec, or Licenses, since there are no Level 0 events in Special Events. Once you've reached the required Levels for the other events, they can be done in pretty much any order. Reaching Level 30 unlocks the initially-hidden
Sebastian Vettel X Challenge.

The various Special Events are summarized in the subsections below. The table in each subsection shows the amount of credits and experience points that can be earned. Note that, like in Licenses, rewards are only awarded once per medal, so it doesn't really serve much purpose to redo any events unless you're either going for a higher/better medal or you're just doing it for the fun of it. In the first column of each table, the number in parentheses is the Level required to enter the event.

• Gran Turismo Karting Experience. All of the karting events can be done using the Gran Turismo PDI Racing Kart 100 that's awarded when Level 1 is reached. Although it's possible to tune a Kart 100, it's not recommended. The key to success here is in learning the tracks and finding the grip through corners. Probably the most useful technique here is "slow in, fast out" since late braking won't always be worth the risk.

• Jeff Gordon NASCAR School. All of the tests below are held on the Super Speedway (oval) versions of either the Daytona or Indianapolis tracks and they're meant to teach basic NASCAR techniques. The car used here is the Chevrolet 2011 Jeff Gordon #24 Impala. There are 3 Gift Car Tickets (GCTs) that can be acquired here, but probably not in the way that most might expect. Rather than award a GCT for each Skill Level, you have to complete all 9 tests with at least all Bronze before a single GCT is awarded. To acquire all 3 GCTs, you'll need to achieve Golds for all 9 tests.

• Top Gear Test Track. All of these events are held on the Top Gear Test Track, and each one consists of a single 2-lap race using the car shown in the second column of the table below. The classification of the events might be a bit puzzling since the Elise race is arguably the most difficult and probably should've been in the Advanced slot. However, having it in Intermediate does make it possible to win a fairly useful car fairly early on (at least, earlier than any other car can be won in Special Events). The Elise Type 72 can be used for A3, B1, B2, C7, D5, D9, E4, and Rally1.

• AMG Driving Academy. All of these events are held on the Nurburgring Nordschleife track, and each Skill Level includes 5 Time Trials (4 sectors plus 1 full course). For a list of the cars awarded for completing these Skill Levels, see the Q section of the table in Miscellaneous Prize Cars.

• Gran Turismo Rally. This is probably the only area in Special Events where you might want to spend some credits, since these events require you to use your own car(s). While the third set of events requires an eligible rally car, the first 2 sets can be done using any capable car that can be fitted with offroad tires and has a BHP rating (adjustable in Settings > Engine > Power Limiter) that doesn't exceed the maximum allowed. If you like a bit of a challenge and you don't mind using multiple cars for the GT Rally events, you could:
 1. Use the Lotus Elise Type 72 from TGear2 to win Rally1 (Beginner).
 2. Use the awarded GCT from Rally1 to acquire a suitable Rally Base Car to win Rally2 (Intermediate).
 3. Use the awarded GCT from Rally2 to acquire a suitable Rally Car to win Rally3 (Advanced).
If you'd rather use a single car for all of the GT Rally events, there are several rally cars to choose from at the various car dealers (New and Used). If you want to buy a Used rally car for these events, be sure to check the in-game list in Rally3 to see if it's eligible. Another way to find out which cars are eligible is by checking the "Rally Car Ticket" and "Historic Rally Car Ticket" parts of the
Rally Tickets list. The 2 capable rally cars that can be won are listed below, along with info on where they can be won:
  • Citroen C4 WRC '08R3. Sebastien Loeb Rally Challenge (16) in Special Events
  • Lancia Delta S4 Rally Car '85      D6. Gallardo Trophy (17) in A-Spec Events
The Lancia is the better car and is easier to acquire, but you'll need a Gallardo to be able to win it. The Citroen, on the other hand, is slightly less competitive, but can be won without having to spend any credits. Note that, if you're going from one type of rally event to another, it's a good idea to check Settings to make sure you're using an appropriate setup for the upcoming event (e.g., you might be allowed more power or softer tires). Also, if you're keeping track of the Days, keep in mind that each stage in these multi-stage events will advance the Day counter.

• Sebastian Vettel X Challenge. These initially-hidden events are unlocked when Level 30 is reached. If you're not familiar with the X2010, its quirky handling will probably take quite a bit of time to get used to. As is evident by the missing data in the table below, I've only ever managed to earn Bronze here, and only with the use of a steering wheel. Note that, if you end up giving up on these events, the X2010 can also be acquired by reaching B-Spec Level 35. Once you've acquired an X2010, it can be used for C9/I9, D1/J1, D5/J5, D7/J7, D8/J8, E2/K2, E6/K6, E9/K9, F1/L1, F3/L3, F4/L4, F5/L5, F6/L6, F7/L7, F8/L8, and F9/L9.

Ticket 1000s

T1Ks (Ticket 1000s) are special in that they're the only GCTs (Gift Car Tickets) that can award almost any car, and they're the only GCTs that can be acquired more than twice. If you're comfortable going into the PS3's Saved Data Utility and copying/deleting files, the procedure described in the "Choosing A Different Prize Car" topic of the
GT5 GameSaves section gives you some control over which cars you'll accept or reject. Since T1Ks don't require you to be at any specific Level, they're ideal for acquiring useful cars in the early stages of gameplay (see Acquiring a high-end LM car for an example). For car collecting, T1Ks can also be useful for acquiring New versions of cars that would otherwise only be obtainable in Used form. When you acquire a T1K, a message will say
"Congratulations.
Either you have taken to the track 100 times or more, or your total distance driven has reached 2000km.
You win the following prize: Gift Car Ticket (Ticket 1000)
"
Although the message might be a bit vague, a T1K is awarded for every 100 valid race finishes, with the prerequisite being that you need to have driven a multiple of 2000 non-B-Spec kilometers. Although the message seems to suggest that one or the other will suffice, T1Ks actually require both finishes and mileage (e.g., the first T1K requires at least 100 finishes and 2000 km, while the second T1K requires a total of at least 200 finishes and 4000 km). A valid race finish is any completed race (win or non-win) in any of the following:
• A-Spec race in A-Spec Mode • One-Make race in Practice Mode • Single Race race in Arcade Mode
It's important to note that B-Spec wins and B-Spec mileage won't count towards T1Ks but do get counted in the "Total Wins" and "Distance Driven" statistics on the Profile page. If you've done anything in B-Spec mode, you'll need to keep in mind that those statistics won't always give you an accurate indication of how close you are to acquiring the next T1K.

Although it's possible to play through GT5 without putting much importance on T1Ks, there are cases where you might want to give them some priority. The table below shows a summary of efficient ways to accumulate the mileage and finishes (wins or non-wins) needed to acquire T1Ks. For the first column: ASR = Arcade Single Race, ATT = Arcade Time Trial, and POM = Practice One Make. The second column shows the recommended car to use (with how it's acquired in parentheses). The third column includes notes in short form. "Car Status mileage" refers to the mileage shown in the "Distance" statistic in Car Status, which is basically what you'd see on the car's odometer if it had one.
Mileage

 ATT > Daytona SS• McLaren MP4-12C '10 (Arcade)
• Gran Turismo Red Bull X2010 SV (S1)
• No Car Status mileage
• "Auto-Pilot" possible
Wins

POM > AutumnRing Mini• [currently-selected car]• Adds mileage to Car Status
 POM > Indianapolis SS• Toyota Minolta 88C-V Race Car '89 (E2)
• [upgraded High-End LM Car]
• Adds mileage to Car Status
Non-Wins

ASR > AutumnRing Mini• Gran Turismo PDI Racing Kart 100 (T2)• No Car Status mileage
 ASR > Daytona SS• McLaren MP4-12C '10 (Arcade)
• Gran Turismo Red Bull X2010 SV (S1)
• No Car Status mileage
For mileage, the Daytona track is ideal because it allows you to do all of your laps at full throttle. A lap on the oval is about 4 km, so every 25 laps gives you about 100 km. The easiest (though not the most efficient) way to accumulate mileage is to use an X2010 in "auto-pilot" using a rubberband to hold the throttle while "riding the wall", the advantage being that it can run unattended. However, if you have the time and don't mind the monotony, manual steering (but still using a rubberband to hold the throttle) will give you lap times that are about 10 seconds per lap faster. For valid finishes, the main things to consider are whether you want wins or non-wins, and whether or not you want to advance the Days. Note that, for ASR or POM races, it's assumed that the number of laps (Options > Arcade Settings > No. of Laps) is set to 1. An easy way of tracking T1K progress is by using a spreadsheet that includes fields labeled "Km" and "T1K" (or whatever you like). The "Km" field would store the current mileage which can be taken directly from the "Distance Driven" statistic in Profile. The "T1K" field would store the number of finishes required for the next T1K; this would start at 0 for a new gamesave and be decremented for each race finish. As an example: after 10 finishes, you'd change the 0 to 90 and, after another 10 finishes, you'd change it to 80. You'll know you've earned a(nother) T1K when the value in "T1K" reaches 0, and you've driven at least 2000 km since the last T1K was awarded.

Level Tickets

The list below shows the possible cars that may be awarded when you open a Gift Car Ticket acquired by completing a Series (Beginner, Amateur, Professional, Expert, Extreme, Endurance). Note that each Level ticket can be acquired twice: once for completing the Series in A-Spec and once for completing the same Series in B-Spec. Also, a Series is considered complete when the main page of that Series shows medals for all 9 of the events (i.e., it doesn't matter if there's a mix of Gold, Silver, and Bronze). In the list below, cars marked with an asterisk (*) can also be won as Prize cars. If you want some control over which car you'll acquire, see

Gameplay

Getting Started

This section describes the basic procedure for starting a new gamesave.
  1. When the game starts up for the very first time, a dialog will ask you to Select a Language and Adjust the Screen. The program then shows the Opening Movie which can be skipped by pressing [X] or [Circle].
  2. You'll then see GT5's Main Menu represented by a set of icons at the bottom of the screen. When startig a new gamesave, it's usually a good idea to set your preferances fairly early on, and you can do so now by scrolling right and choosing the Options item. The list below shows an example of what I'd normally set. Note that the available options may differ, depending on which version of GT5 you're currently running.
    • General > Arcade Settings > No. of Laps: 1 laps, Visible Damage: OFF
    • General > Units/Languages > Distance: km
    • Hardware > Vibration Settings > Vibration Function: Off
    • Hardware > Audio Settings > all BGM: Off
    • Steering Controllers > Steering Settings > Power-Assisted Steering: On, Feedback Strength: 1
    • Miscellaneous > Utilities > Opening Movie: uncheck (unset)
Having "No. of Laps" set to 1 is useful for accumulating quick Wins that count towards the next
Ticket 1000. "Vibration" set to Off is basically to keep the controller from rattling off the table when using a rubberband to run an Arcade Time Trial session in "auto-pilot" mode. The "Steering Settings" are basically to reduce excessive wear on steering wheels.
  3. After pressing [Circle] to Exit the Options menu, you should see "Saving data..." at the lower right of the screen. You'll then be back at GT5's Main Menu, which includes GT Mode and Arcade Mode.
  4. If you're already familiar with the Gran Turismo series and you just want to get straight into racing in GT Mode, you can skip this step and move on to Step 5. On the other hand, if you're fairly new to the Gran Turismo series, or you're new to racing games in general, I'd recommend spending some time in Arcade Mode to learn some of the tracks and get a feel for some of the cars. If you want an idea of what GT Mode will be like, you can try some of the tracks in Single Race, which starts by asking you to select a difficulty level, track, and car. The dialogs that follow depend on the chosen Difficulty level. Once you've closed all of the dialogs and the program has finished loading track data, you'll be presented with the Race menu which includes Start, Driving Options, Settings, and Exit. Driving Options allows you to set things like Transmission, Tires, Driving Line, and Traction Control. After each race, the program automatically goes into a limited Replay mode which you can exit by pressing the [START] button. If you want to study the track or racing lines, the Race menu's Replay has more options than the automatic Replay does.
  5. When you enter GT Mode for the first time, the program will display various introductory dialogs/messages. Once you've closed all of them, you should again see "Saving data..." at the lower right of the screen. While Arcade Mode doesn't require you to own any cars, GT Mode does. Depending on which version of GT5 you're running, you'll need to either redeem or buy your first car.
  6. At this stage, you're pretty much all set to do some racing, but you can also take a few more optional steps before doing so:

Early-Stage Gameplay

This section is basically meant as a guide to getting a good start, and it's divided into 2 main parts: the first part (Prioritizing Events) is for general efficiency, while the second part (
Acquiring A High-End LM Car) includes examples of how to acquire a high-end LM car fairly early on. For all of the tables in this section, a single letter followed by a number refers to an A-Spec event, where a 2-digit number refers to a specific race of that event (e.g., "B62" refers to the second race of B6). For abbreviated words like "NAS" and "AMG", see Special Events.

1. Prioritizing Events. For level-based games like GT5, the key to advancing quickly is to "level up" in an efficient manner, and one way to do this is by putting a high priority on high-paying events while leaving low-paying events for later. The table below shows the earnings for the events that can be done if you're at the Level shown in the first column. For the events in the other columns, the number in parentheses is the number to divide the earnings by, if you want to know how much the event pays per Day. Note that, for all AMG events, the earnings shown is for Silver while, for NAS2 and NAS3, the earnings shown is for Bronze. Also, keep in mind that credits and experience points in Special Events are only awarded once per medal.

Once you reach Level 24, the quickest way to reach Level 30 is probably by doing the E9 Dream Car 'money maker'. The Endurance races are also worth considering; although they won't pay much in the way of credits, they do award lots of experience points while keeping the Day counter to a minimum.

2. Acquiring A High-End LM Car. If you're a longtime fan of the Gran Turismo series, you'll know the importance of having a good car fairly early on. The rest of this 2-part section includes examples of how to acquire a high-end LM car by either:
  • winning one,   • buying one, or   • acquiring one from a Ticket 1000.
For all of the tables in these examples, the first column shows the events, the second column shows the car (with how it's acquired in parentheses), and the third column shows the car's level of upgrades or other notes. An 'x' following an event means that the event was done multiple times (e.g., "G3x2" means that G3 was done twice). For events or cars marked with an asterisk (*), see the notes below the table.

Winning a high-end LM car. The basic idea here is to put a high priority on winning cars that can be used to win other more useful cars. In this example, the high-end LM car that's acquired is the Toyota Minolta 88C-V Race Car '89.

For H3: The Furai that's awarded is one of those cars that's available in various colors but can't be repainted; if you want some control over which color you'll acquire, see "
Choosing A Different Color" in the GT5 GameSaves section.
For E2: The car was maxxed out to 692pp, with Spd set to 370 kph and RS tires fitted. For E22, try to stay to the left/inside of the track (off the ideal line) so that the other cars don't get much tow from your slipstream.

Earning enough credits to buy a high-end LM car. This example focuses mainly on Special Events since they're especially useful for earning a fair amount of credits without having to spend much. Note that, for Special Events, the car shown in the second column isn't necessarily the car that was used for the event; it's just the car that was Current at the time.

Acquiring a high-end LM car from a Ticket 1000. This is the simplest and possibly quickest way to acquire a high-end LM car, but it's also the most monotonous. If you can stand the monotony, it should be possible to acquire a high-end LM car in as little as 10 hours of game time. The 100 1-lap races can be done in about 2 hours, the 400 Time Trial laps can be done in about 7 hours, and acquiring a high-end LM car from a T1K generally takes at least an hour. The gameflow below is done entirely in Arcade Mode, so it's possible to do this without having to own a car or reach a certain Level. Once you've acquired your first T1K, you can use the technique described in Choosing A Different Prize Car to acquire your first high-end LM car.
 ASR-Daytona-x100, ATT-Daytona-400 (laps)ZondaR (Arcade) | MP4-12C (Arcade)T RS, TCS 4
For ASR (Arcade Single Race), be sure to do 1-lap races and not the default 2 laps (the duration can also be set in Options).
For ATT (Arcade Time Trial), if you want to accumulate some of the mileage in "auto-pilot" (using a rubberband to hold the throttle), an MP4-12C might be the better car to use, since the ZondaR tends to get stuck in the wall every hour or so (at least, in all of my tests, anyway).

Basic Tuning

Although most upgrades can be bought and tuned while in Settings (accessable from any Race menu or from your Garage), some upgrades can only be bought from GT Auto or the Parts Shop, and some tuning options are only available in Driving Options (accessable from any Race menu). The table below shows the upgrades that can't be bought in Settings. Note that, once bought, most of these are permanent and can't be uninstalled; the exception is Aero Parts which can be removed or replaced but at a cost.
GT Auto Oil Change | Aero Parts | Engine Overhaul | Body Rigidity Restoration | Racing Modifications
Parts Shop  Body/Chassis > Weight Reduction | Engine > Engine Tuning
Driving Options  Traction Control | ABS
For upgrades that can be bought from either in Settings or from the Parts Shop, it's more efficient to buy them in Settings since they're installed automatically (no need to confirm) and you have the ability to change the settings (which isn't possible at the Parts Shop). If you're running a version of GT5 that features Tuning Presets, I'd recommend switching to Set-Up B or C before buying upgrades or changing settings. The idea is to leave Set-Up A unchanged so that you can tell at a glance, just by entering Settings, whether you're using custom settings or the defaults.

GT5 GameSaves

This section includes some basic information about how GT5 handles user data (i.e., gamesaves) and how you can use the PS3's builtin features to take advantage of that handling. Note that this section assumes that you're at least somewhat familiar with the PS3's system software. If you normally start your games automatically and you're not normally exposed to the PS3's main menu or its submenus, it's probably best to skip this section since there are some risks involved (see "
Some things to watch out for" below). Also, if you're running anything other than GT5 v1.13 or v2.07, see Game Versions.

GT5 uses AutoSave and there are 2 different gamesave implementations that I know of. While GT5 v1.13 uses a single file to store user data, GT5 v2.07 uses 2 files (a main gamesave and a backup).
• For GT5 v1.13: The AutoSave implementation is fairly straightforward. The program loads user data during startup and saves user data at various stages during gameplay.
• For GT5 v2.07: When the program starts up, it loads the file labeled "GRAN TURISMO 5" (your most recent gamesave) and copies it to a file labeled "Gran Turismo 5 (Backup)". If you Quit GT5 and go into the PS3's Saved Data Utility, the "GRAN TURISMO 5" file will be the game session that you just exited out of, and the "Gran Turismo 5 (Backup)" file will be the saved data of your previous game session. If GT5 starts up and can't find the "GRAN TURISMO 5" file, the program will tell you so and ask if you want to "Load from backup data?". If you answer "Yes", the program will create a new "GRAN TURISMO 5" file that's essentially a copy of your "Gran Turismo 5 (Backup)" file.
Whether you're running GT5 v1.13 or v2.07, it's possible to revert to a previous gamestate, which basically means you can do things like undo a purchase or try for a different prize car. Since most of the procedures in this section will include 2 basic techniques, they're described here to reduce some redundancy:
 Save The Current Gamestate - v1.13 :
  1. Press the [PS] button to Quit the game,
  2. With a USB memory stick inserted, go to the PS3's Saved Data Utility, and Copy the "GRAN TURISMO 5" file to the inserted stick,
  3. Restart GT5.
Revert To The Saved Gamestate - v1.13 :
  1. Press the [PS] button to Quit the game,
  2. With the USB memory stick still inserted, go to the PS3's Saved Data Utility, and Copy the "GRAN TURISMO 5" file from the stick to the PS3,
  3. Restart GT5.
 Save The Current Gamestate - v2.07 :
  1. Press the [PS] button to Quit the game,
  2. Restart GT5 to ensure that the "Gran Turismo 5 (Backup)" file is basically the same as the "GRAN TURISMO 5" file.
Revert To The Saved Gamestate - v2.07 :
  1. Press the [PS] button to Quit the game,
  2. Go to the PS3's Saved Data Utility and delete the file labeled "GRAN TURISMO 5" (do NOT delete the backup),
  3. Restart GT5, and answer "Yes" when asked "Load from backup data?".
Refer to the above whenever you see the text "Save The Current Gamestate" or "Revert To The Saved Gamestate" in any of the procedures below. Note that this section uses the following abbreviations: GCT = Gift Car Ticket, and T1K = Ticket 1000.

• Choosing A Different Prize Car. Although most events will award a specific car, some GCTs will award a random one. The procedure below allows you to choose to either keep an awarded car or try for another one. Note that the chances of getting a specific car will depend on how many possible cars there are. If you're trying to get a specific car from a Level 24 Class Ticket, for example, it may only take a few tries because there are only 3 possibilities. On the other hand, if you're trying to get a specific car from a Ticket 1000, it may take several hundreds of tries because there are 1000+ possibilities. Also keep in mind that, as with all other titles in the Gran Turismo series, the randomness is not entirely random and it may be impossible to acquire certain cars under certain conditions.
  1. Once you've acquired a GCT that awards a random car, Save The Current Gamestate. If you want to be able to try different cars before deciding on one, make a backup of the gamesave before restarting GT5.
  2. Once GT5 has restarted, go to Car Delivery and Open your GCT. Note that, if you're running GT5 v2.07, there is also an alternative way to open your GCTs.
  3. If the car that you're awarded is one that you want to keep, you can skip to Step 5. Otherwise, if the awarded car is not one that you want to keep, you can Revert To The Saved Gamestate to try for a different one.
  4. Repeat Steps 2-3 until you have a car that you're satisfied with.
  5. If you want to avoid the risk of accidentally undoing the acquirement, you can Quit and restart GT5.
• Choosing A Different Color. Although many cars can be repainted, some can't. For events that award a car that's available in different colors but can't be repainted (e.g., Audi R8 LMS, Mazda Furai), the procedure below allows you to choose a preferred color. For a car that can be repainted, you can also use this procedure if you just want it in a certain color without having to repaint it, or if you just don't want to be stuck with a Paint Item that you don't want.
  1. Do the event that awards the car that you want, but do NOT exit to the Home page,
  2. Exit the last test/race of the event (you should see "Saving data..." at the bottom right) but, again, do NOT exit to the Home page,
  3. Save The Current Gamestate,
  4. Once the program has restarted, it'll tell you that you've won a car,
  5. Check the color icon in Car Delivery. If it's a color that you want to keep, skip to Step 7. If you want to try for a different color, Revert To The Saved Gamestate.
  6. Repeat Steps 4-5 until you get the car in your preferred color.
  7. If you want to avoid the risk of accidentally undoing the acquirement, you can Quit and restart GT5.
• Checking Upcoming Used Cars. If you want to do an event that consists of more than 5 races (e.g., the Formula Gran Turismo World Championship or Gran Turismo Rally > Advanced) but you don't want to risk missing any rare or wanted cars at the Used car lot, you can use the procedure below. If you're low on credits, you can also use this technique to find out whether you'll need to do either the Indy or Dream Car 'money maker' to be able to afford the upcoming cars that you want.
  1. Save The Current Gamestate,
  2. Check the Used car line-up,
  3. Advance the Day counter 5 Days at a time and then recheck the Used car line-up. Do this as many times as necessary,
  4. Revert To The Saved Gamestate,
  5. At this stage, you can either go ahead and do the event that you planned to do (if you didn't come across any Used cars that you want) or you can postpone the event (until after you've acquired the desired car).
• For Miscellaneous Testing. While all of the above procedures have specific goals, there may also be times when you just want to do some general testing. For any case where you want the option of undoing what's been done, the procedure below will be pretty much the same except for the second step. If you wanted to buy a car and/or upgrades that you're not sure about, for example, you could do that in Step 2 and then either skip or do Step 3 (depending on whether you want to keep the car or undo the purchase).
  1. Save The Current Gamestate,
  2. Do as much testing as necessary,
  3. When you're done, Revert To The Saved Gamestate.
Some Things To Watch Out For
General Precautions :
 • Before trying any of the above procedures on an important gamesave, try it on a test gamesave (i.e., one that isn't important).
 • If you're used to starting games by turning on the PS3 and then inserting a disc, I'd recommend turning off the PS3's Disc AutoStart feature (Settings > System Settings > Disc Auto-Start).
 • Trying to acquire a specific car or color can be a very tedious chore. If you find that you're losing your concentration, you can avoid the risk of mishaps by taking a break and trying it some other time.
For GT5 v1.13 :
 • Make sure you're copying in the right direction. The file stored on the USB memory stick basically serves the same purpose as v2.07's backup file.
For GT5 v2.07 :
 • Be careful that you don't delete the wrong file. If you accidentally delete the "Gran Turismo 5 (Backup)" file, you'll lose the ability to revert to the previous gamestate. Check near the bottom left of the screen before answering "Yes" when asked "The saved data will be deleted. Are you sure you want to continue?" to make sure it says "GRAN TURISMO 5".
 • Be very careful that you don't delete both the "GRAN TURISMO 5" and "Gran Turismo 5 (Backup)" files. If this happens, you'll lose all of your hard work and you'll have to start a new gamesave from scratch.
 • If you accidentally press the [Circle] button (Cancel) on the "Load from backup data?" screen, it's the same as selecting "No" and pressing [X] (in which case, the program will create a new gamesave from scratch). If this happens, press the [PS] button immediately to Quit the game before it overwrites the backup file! With the main file missing and the backup file overwritten, the effect is basically the same as deleting both files (i.e., you'll lose all of your hard work), so be careful which button you press.
 • If you have multiple Gift Car Tickets and you're trying to acquire a specific car or color, you'll need to make sure that you only try the steps with one Ticket at a time. If you open 2 Tickets, for example, and they yield one car that you want and one that you don't want, you won't be able to revert to the unopened Ticket of the car that you don't want without reverting to the unopened Ticket of the car that you do want (in which case, you'll have to decide whether you want to keep both cars or lose both cars).
 • If you Quit GT5 and you want to revert to an unopened Gift Car Ticket to give it another try, be careful that you don't accidentally restart the game before deleting the "GRAN TURISMO 5" file; otherwise, you'll have no other choice than to settle for whichever car you acquired.

Car Collecting

In Gran Turismo 5, car collecting is much more of a chore than in most (if not all) other titles in the Gran Turismo series. Even if you're a longtime fan and you normally collect all cars as part of normal gameplay, there are several reasons why you might want to skip it in GT5. The main drawback is the amount of time and tedious repetition required to complete a car collection. Other reasons are listed below.
• There is no Trade feature to make it easier to collect cars.
• There is no onscreen Day counter to let you know when the Used Car lineup has changed.
• There is no sane wraparound (or possibly no wraparound at all) at the Used car dealer.
• Car delivery seems to take longer than it needs to.
• Events will only award a prize car once.
• The more cars you own, the longer it takes to check your Garage or Load/Save data.
All of the above seem to suggest that the developers either made a conscious decision to discourage car collecting, or they just didn't think about it. That said, if you still want to collect cars, the notes below may be useful.

• Readily-Available Cars. If you're a longtime fan of the Gran Turismo series, your first thought might be to collect all cars (New and Used). However, since cars that can be bought from a New car dealer are always available, you could skip them and opt for a collection that includes mainly Used cars and Prize cars that aren't as readily available. If you do want to collect all cars, it's probably best to put a low priority on New cars, and only buy them if they'll be useful for acquiring other cars, or when you get to that point where you have more credits than you need. An alternative to collecting New cars is to fill the bank and then, whenever you want to, you can use the technique described in the "For Miscellaneous Testing" section of
GT5 GameSaves to basically "rent" any New car of your choice (with the option of keeping only the ones you really want).

• The State Of Cars. Probably the easiest and least time-consuming way to collect cars is to just focus on having all the cars checkmarked at the dealers and to not put too much importance on car colors or which state the cars are in. Possibly the only case where the state of the cars might be important is if you maintain a car database and you need a gamesave that can be used as reference. In this case, there are at least 2 things that might be worth considering:
• The state of Used cars. Skip St4 or collect any/all?
• The state of non-readily-available Prize cars. Preserve St0 or not?
For Used cars, keep in mind that some of them might not be easily available in any state other than St4. For useful Prize cars that can't be bought from a New car dealer, if you don't want to go through the trouble of preserving their state, there are other New and/or Used cars that can be used instead. Also, if you've already used some of your non-readily-available Prize cars, you could opt to use the cars' St2 rather than St0 data; or, alternatively, you could create a supplementary gamesave that includes St0 versions of those cars. Whether you decide to go with a car collection where the state of the cars matters, or you decide to just go for the checkmarks, it's probably best to make that decision fairly early on.

• Buyable Prize Cars. If your goal is only to collect cars and you're not really interested in game completiion, you can save some time by skipping any events where the prize is a readily-available car that can be bought from a New car dealer. The first column of the table below shows some of the events that can be skipped (with the amount of time you'll save in parentheses), while the second column shows the prize car (with the dealer price in parentheses). These cars are much less time-consuming to buy rather than win. Skipping the Laguna Seca 200 (F3), for example, saves you at least 2 hours since the Infiniti Coupe prize can be bought at any time for Cr.70,000 (which can be earned in about 5 minutes in the Indy money-maker).
• F3. Laguna Seca 200 Miles (150 min.) Infiniti Coupe Concept '06 (Cr.70,000)
• F7. Tsukuba 9-Hour (550 min.) HKS CT230R '08 (Cr.260,000)
• F9. 24 Hours of Nurburgring (1440 min.) Audi R10 TDI Race Car '06 (Cr.4,750,000)
• J1. Tuned Car Championship (80 min.) AEM S2000 (Cr.100,000)
• J8. Gran Turismo Allstars (60 min.) Amuse Nismo 380RS Super Leggera (Cr.100,000)
• K4. European Championship (100 min.) BMW Concept 1 Series tii '07 (Cr.70,000)
• K6. Super GT (180 min.) Toyota Castrol Tom's Supra '97 (Cr.900,000)
• L9. 24 Hours of Nurburgring (1445 min.) McLaren MP4-12C '10 (Cr.225,000)
If you don't care whether your cars are New or Used, you can also save some time by skipping events where the prize is a car that you've already bought (or plan to buy) from the Used car dealer. Examples are shown below. Keep in mind that, since these cars are subject to availability, some of these might not be so easy to acquire since GT5's implementation of the Used car dealer is less-than-ideal for car collecting.
• E8. Formula Gran Turismo World (200 min.) Caterham Seven Fireblade '02 (Cr.60,000)
• F2. Roadster 4-Hour (245 min.) Mazda 110S L10B '68 (Cr.67,000)
• F5. Suzuka 1000 km (390 min.) Nissan GT-R Concept LM (Cr.980,000)
• F8. 24 Hours of Le Mans (1440 min.) Audi R8 Playstation Team Oreca '05 (Cr.4,000,000)

• L8. 24 Hours of Le Mans (1445 min.) Toyota GT-One TS020 '99 (Cr.3,000,000)

• Cars From Gift Car Tickets. GCTs that award a random car are ideal for acquiring New versions of cars that would otherwise only be obtainable in Used condition, and for acquiring some of the more expensive or rare cars. If you want to use your GCTs for car collecting, I'd recommend reading the GT5 GameSaves section, if you haven't already done so. The table below includes a selection of cars that can be acquired from various GCTs, with the amount you'll save in parentheses. Note that Level Tickets can only be acquired twice (one for A-Spec and one for B-Spec) and Rally Tickets can only be acquired once.

It's probably best to use the above GCTs fairly early on, the reason being that, as your collection grows, it'll become increasingly more difficult to end up with a car you'll want to keep that you don't already own. Note that Ticket 1000s can also be very useful for car collecting. Unlike the GCTs above, T1Ks can be acquired multiple times and at pretty much any stage of gameplay. The Early-Stage Gameplay section describes an efficient way to acquire your first T1K. Since each T1K will generally have cost you at least 10 hours of gameplay, and since a T1K can potentially be worth Cr.20,000,000, it's probably best to be a bit selective about whether to keep an awarded car or try for a different one. If your focus is on gameplay, for example, you could opt to only keep cars that will be useful for advancing quickly (e.g., high-end LM cars). Or, if collecting cars is your main goal, you could opt to only keep cars that will save you some time and/or credits (e.g., rare or expensive cars).
